so im having a bit of an issue.

ive got an old laptop. MSI GX600. im trying to refurbish it so that i can give it to a family member. the hardware is all good (as far as i can tell) but it refuses to accept an operating system.

ive tried win 7, win 10, linux mint, and ubuntu. win 7 just refuses to install period. but 10 and the linux distros will go through and fully install on the hard drive successfully with no errors. when i try to boot from the drive that the operating system was just installed on it reads that nothing is there and just goes straight to the bios boot menu or any other bootable option that it can find that is enabled in the bios.

what in the actual fuck am i doing wrong? ive tried every combination of partitions and and formats and operating systems that i can think of and i still get the same result.

please help.

maybe a longshot, but has anyone gotten an asus z170-e mobo to work with the asus thunderbolt 3 expansion card?

main issue is that asus doesn't have the z170-e listed in their compatible mobos for the expansion card, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. crux of the matter is whether a vaguely budget mobo's PCIe setup has any barrier for dropping the 2nd x16 lane down to x4 speed (1st is used by a discrete graphics card). my hunch is the z170-e was released after asus' first wave of z170 boards and they never bothered updating the compatibility list but I wanted to check before wasting time returning it to the 'zon.

anyways here are the spec pages:

correct, but many modems are actually modem+router combos

a modem is in charge of connecting to your ISP's cables coming in from the street -- a "pure" modem will only have one ethernet port. it's the router half of the machine that does shit like connecting to more than one device over ethernet or running a wifi network

desu, in the beginning the hardest part is gonna be the maths. I started a similar CS course with pretty much no practical knowledge, but a lot of interest and tidbits. You'll be fine if you just do your coursework dutifully.
If you really wanna go into it prepared, read up on multi var calc, linear algebra and try and make a program like tic tac toe in a programming language of your choice.
>>
>>59337851
Boot off a usb stick for a while see if you like. Maybe try Ubuntu mate foryour first go.

Or..

Buy a raspberry pi, its limitations can spur you to explore the system more.

Try running a tshock terria (just an example) now we're on the command line, getting shit done using remembering commands.

Youll find it works for 1 person but two or more it gets harder. Well now you have a reason to try overclock amd maybe remove and replace parts of the system for more speed.

Those are rwo suggestions.
>>

The things that can be learnt in uni, uni will teach you regardless of background. You can read up on experience. The people you talk of have likely spent years practicing what they are doing, and you can't (and shouldn't) make up for that. Just be interested in learning and have an open mind, and you'll reach an equilibrium with most in due time. The fact you're on /g/ in the first place probably means you have more general knowledge of all things computers than most of the normies that start on CS courses. It's truly disgusting how many people don't even know what a registry key is, and haven't opened the commandline before when on a CS study. Or god forbid use a mac unironically.

First off, learn to use spaces after commas, punctuation, and before and after parenthesis. Second off, there is no main language you need to learn, you program in whatever language is needed for the job: C/C++, assembly (asm is a family of languages), knowledge on SQL would be useful, etc. You should worry more about algorithms beforehand, so SCIP is pretty much mandatory reading (learn some C first, figure out what other prereqs you need on your own).

After that you should learn about data security and so on, but by the time you've finished SCIP and learned assembly you won't really need any more guidance. If you plan on doing this for a job (sysadmin, etc.), you're going to need internships, certs, and a CS degree. I'd get internships after learning C or C++.

And this will take a long ass time, so you're better off getting a CS degree while doing extra reading at home, but something tells me you've already given up halfway through my post. If that's the case, the hardest part is starting.

ip addresses are not user friendly, so DNS was made to make life easier for people.

think of it like a phonebook
555-1245 calls Jim, the guy currently plowing Becky
555-1234 calls Becky, your bitch ex-gf

similarly
169.54.111.52 goes to dumbfuckistan.com
92.0.108.37 goes to googleistoohard.com

DNS just makes it to where you say "I'm looking for dumbfuckistan.com", and the computer says, "oh, you mean 169.54.111.52" and then directs your browser onward.

Normally, DNS is handled by your gateway, or subsequently your ISP. When you search for google.com, your computer keeps a mental note of what the last IP was when it reached it, this is your cached info. If ever that fails, it'll check with the gateway, which in turn checks with your ISPs nameservers, which may in turn again check with someone else. Once it finds what you're after, it comes back to you w/ google maps directions to the destination.

Your hosts file is a way to bypass that, rather than letting it look to the gateway for directions. Normally, people tend to use the hosts file to block access to certain sites, or if they're hosting one themselves and want to redirect traffic.
An example would be if I had a patched .dll for Photoshop, and wanted to make sure my computer never checked with Adobe to verify the license, I would make an entry in the hosts file to say "if ever anyone looks for adobe.com, redirect them to 127.0.0.1"
>127.0.0.1 adobe.com

my default /etc/hosts says 127.0.0.1 localhost.
when I try localhost through the browser I get "Unable to connect". why? shouldn't I be seeing a blank page instead? or is it because there's no .html to display at all? and what port is it trying to connect to by default?

but interesting that when I try 127.0.0.1:1 I get "This address is restricted". I understand this is because some other program/daemon/whatever is already using that port or has it reserved?

Here's my 2 cents. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pYVsWX
You don't need an optical drive. If you do, getting an external is more convenient so you don't have to open your case's front door every time to use it.
I removed the sound card in case you thought you needed it to even have sound. Your on board sound is good enough, unless you're an audiophile. Then it's acceptable.
I seriously don't understand why you picked that motherboard and ram. You were picking outdated hardware. Also, I picked 8gbs of ram, as many video games really only need that much. GTA V was the only one in recent memory that actually benefited you greatly from 16gb.
If you're smart, you can get w10 for free.
Get a 1920x1080 monitor.

>>59339880
You don't need an aftermarket CPU cooler if you're not going to overclock, which you won't do with a non-K i5
You don't really need an optical drive either
Don't pay for Windows. Especially not for Windows 10.
Unless you actually work in sound production, music, etc, you don't need a sound card, there's one in your motherboard that's more than enough
Use the extra 216 teabucks you save on all of the above to buy a better graphics card, like an RX 470 or 480

Also get a 1080p monitor. It's the year 2017 ffs

IGPUs last a long time.

And yes it will be more than enough, if its a recent one it will be good enough for most games.
>>
>>59341678
You are asking if using your iGPU will damage it? That's a pretty retarded question desu
>>
>>59341678
Mobos iGPUs are the ones that used to get damaged since they were weak, hot and passive cooled. Your i7 iGPU is being cooled by the CPU cooler and it barely gets hot.

Anything under 45-50°C is good.

I have WD Blues that have 40k hours with the average temperature being 45°C 24/7.

W-well I'm posting in /sqt/.

I don't know, since those CPUs aren't built for the purpose of functioning like a GPU I just thought it was a bad idea to use them that way for a long period of time.

If I could buy a GPU now I would but I don't have the money for it. I'd like to save for a nice nvidia one if possible. It's a 7700 by the way.

>>59341731
Yeah the iGPU from the computer I'm using to type right now is damaged for example. When I first bought it my mom could play all sorts of games with it without any problems. Now I got it as a secondhand thing (it's 8 years old or something now) and I can't even run retro games properly nor watch videos in 1080p (forced to watch 720p). Pic related.

Yes they are.
Not all people need a GPU, they are really good actually till you want to put a game in high settings, but a recent IGPU can let you run most games in mid-high settings.

It served me well.

Alright alright, thanks everyone. Quite happy to hear that as that means I won't have to wait ages before ordering my parts.

Now all that's left is to decide whether I go...

>i7-7700 + B250 + DDR4 2400mhz
>i7-7700K + custom cooler + B250 + DDR4 2400mhz
>i7-7700K + custom cooler + Z270 + DDR4 3200mhz

I know 3rd choice is "best" but I'm not even sure It'd get the best out of such a build. And even if in 4 or 5 years I'd need to overclock by then I could simply just make a new build with whatever new fancy CPU there is.

Z270.

You shouldnt use a K CPU with a B250 or H270 motherboard since you wont be able to overclock.

If you wanna spend less in a locked CPU and get the B250.

Post your whole build with PCPartPicker.

Also kaby lake IGPUs are really good, i can play overwatch at mid settings with a Intel HD 510, probably you will be able to do way more with the 700 series.

What's the best 1440p monitor for under $330 today, /sqt/? I have a 1070 powering a 1080p monitor and feel the upgrade itch, but 4K is all pretty expensive. Looking at the Asus PB258Q and Acer G257HU right now, and I want something with good color reproduction, under 5ms response.

2nd choice is to profit from the higher base clock of the K version. I don't plan on OCing.

There's nothing to post, this is already the full build. Then I'll just get an ok case and a SSD.

I just don't know if I'd regret getting the 7700 or not. It's never on any bench so I have a hard time knowing how good it is, too, since naturally they prefer showcasing the K version.

>>i7-7700K + custom cooler + Z270 + DDR4 3200mhz

That's how I went, I got a DEEPCOOL GAMMAXX 400 CPU Cooler for the cooler.

You may want to look into the cooler, I had max height requirement I had to plan for but it is a good cooler nonetheless. Still I am sure there are higher performing units, not sure if they can match that value tho.

You dont get a heatsink fan with K series which you need, which is $20-50 more.

Pretty much. It's generally a good idea to use the most naive solution that works on the target hardware. As hardware gets more powerful, developers stop having to overengineer solutions. You do get some reward back in the form of fewer bugs, though.

Hey /g/, I have two questions.

First, anyone have a link to that "tutorial" on how to install Windows 7 updates, since MS fucked up how they should work?

Second, I found an old computer that can run an older Xeon (up to an E5450), but it's limited, among other things, by having only 4GB of usable RAM, and cannot take more. So I'd like to ask what would be a good, cheap, single slot GPU to use for this computer? It needs to be single slot due to BTX, I'm planning on giving this PC to my nephew when I'm done with it.
>>
>>59342668
Download Windows 7 Ultimate from my digital life.
Download Rufus to make the USB bootable.
MBR CSM partition and NTFS filesystem in options.

Once you are done you use MSI Smart tools to add USB 3.0 drivers.

To install ethernet drivers use 3DP Network and 3DP Chip for the rest.

ls -Ra | grep -i *.jpg

how would I go about moving those found results to a separate location in a one-liner?
>>
>>59343049
You mean move files that have a matched file name?

find . -type f -iname '*.jpg' -exec mv "{}" somefolder \;
>>
>>59343242
sorta. truth be told it's not the ls command, but I need to pipe the output from a proprietary tool that identifies orphaned files into a separate mv command. issue is that they'll have the same file extension as non-orphan files so I can't just do a find by extension.
>>
>>59343318
Assuming whatever the command is outputs the full name of the file, do this:

someProprietaryProgram | while read line; do mv $line outputdir; done
