Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Taking into account the U cpu, the Latitude equivalent would be a 6320, and Thinkpad equivalent would be a X220.

For that money I can easily get a used T430 in Slav Yurop, or a T520 in mint condition, or a beefed up X220 with new ssd and battery.

A 2170p is like $200 US max here. used, cant find it refurbished. Very few actually refurbished laptops here.

The only slightly annoying thing is the placement of the USB ports. Why the fuck did they put them so close to the front right where, you know, the mouse usually sits

Alright lads, I'm looking into purchasing my first thinkpad, for general purpose use.

I'm currently trying to decide between getting a used T550 ($450 at http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T550-15-6-2-30GHz-8GB-256GB-SSD-Windows-7-French-/371761331385?hash=item568eb3bcb9:g:EP4AAOSwCGVX~pzu)
or a new T650 ($600 with coupon at http://shop.lenovo.com/perksoffer/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t560/)

Can anyone experienced weigh in on this decision? Is a brand new model with better hardware worth the extra $150?

Alternatively, if both of the laptops I'm looking at are shit, please recommend a non-shit one.

Thank you

T430 for sure. The main reason to consider Latitudes or Elitebooks is that they're usually substantially cheaper for an equivalent model. The 8440w is two generations behind the T430, it's absolutely not worth the same price.

I would say x220 and 6320.

Be aware that the Latitude have terrible support from Dell, not even close to what Lenovo offer for old thinkpads. It mostly matter if you want to use Windows 10 and get all drivers working tho.
>>
>>59303798
>>59303815

If you got it for free, that's fine, still much better than other used laptops. You should still try and sell it so you can buy a T430 series instead. You might even make money in the process.

Also, don't forget to install tlp:
http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-linux-advanced-power-management.html
>>
>>59303033

The touchpad is covered with a sticker, might be hard to remove.

For Win10, install the lenovo update manager and let it install drivers and utilities. It's essential for proper functionality and battery life.

So I've got a question.

Have any of you ever considered buying cheap thinkpads online, doing them up a little bit (lets say RAM and SSD upgrade) then reselling them at a profit? Would the margins be too small to be worth it?

Anyone got experience with it?
>>
>>59311317
You're likely to struggle to make it turn any profit at all, let alone make it worth your time. If you're just sourcing your thinkpads and parts off of ebay, absolutely anyone else has access to the same prices. The kind of person buying second hand laptops is going to at least know how to add more RAM.

The majority of listings on ebay come from IT disposal businesses that offer collection and purchase (at a low price) of old gear from companies who just want to write shit off and not have someone sorting their shit and flogging it off on ebay over the course of years.. If you want to make money selling chinkpads, this is your best bet really.
>>
>>59302982

>>59308383
T430 will be much more lighter, 8440w is old, and I doubt the old GPU and weight will be worth it.

>>59311317
Sometimes I buy just to put back up and flip, but sometimes I would only net maybe 30% (I bought 5x T430 for $70 each and sold em for $100 each)

However, some laptops i take a risk on for an SSD and RAM that are faulty.

Like a Dell Latitude E6430 you can get them maybe for $70 or under and you can flip the mobo and cpu usually for that price. then the LCD is another $20, sub board $5, DC jack nets maybe $3, then frame and bottom pieces (if they are nice) $7 each

DESU some motherboards are expensive, especially 15" and 17" fuckers. but the risk of them not working sucks too.

>>
>>59311860
The 2560p is HP's equivalent to the X220, so the T430 will have a newer CPU with a much improved iGPU, optional dGPU, and the possibility of a higher resolution display. Screens are ass on both models, and unlike the X220 there is no IPS option for the 2560p. The knockoff trackpoint Elitebooks use can't compare to the original, and you don't get a middle mouse button for it either.

Overall, it comes down to how well-specced that T430 is and its condition. A base model with 1366x768, iGPU only, and a worn body would not be worth 50% more than a decent condition 2560p.

I decided to replace the crusty old thermal paste on my X220. It was fairly easy except for plugging the DC powerjack back in. The cable is so short that you basically have to have the motherboard almost in place to do it. It took me a half hour to fumble it back.

Using Arctic MX-4, it cut down my average idle temple by about 5 degrees Celsius and the load under Prime 95 about 7-8 degrees Celsius.

Yep, that's the very first thing I did as I got my X220. It came with 8GB of RAM at 1333mhz.

Took a chance on X240 without much description. Cost me £206 total.

Only issues I've found so far is a small fracture by the keyboard, one of the usb ports is broken but still functions and a screw missing on the base. At first it was getting pretty hot but has dropped below 40 now possibly because of the missing screw near the fan.

I game all the time on my T400

An HD3470 isn't exactly a powerhouse but it's fun to play a game every now and then after work. Anyone who doesn't takes themselves way to seriously.

Asking /tpg/ for advice on a gaming laptop is pretty fucking stupid though.
>>
>>59318181
I have a W520 at home and a T560 at work. Honestly the off-center thing does not bother me in the slightest, and neither do most aspects of the new keyboard (except for the way the function keys operate, I prefer the dedicated buttons on the T430). If anything I prefer the integrated numpad because I work with a lot of numbers and it's just way easier vs using the number row. The only people who are bothered by it are those who choose to be bothered by it, like how some people could not stand the fact that the T400 screen was slightly off-center. Autists, in other words.

I bought a refurbished T530 and it's pretty nice but I'm having trouble with the weird textured touchpad. It's not very good at keeping track of your fingers placement and movement. Does every Thinkpad have it?
>>
>>59327485
it's just a sticker. You can remove it without any issues.
>>
>>59327531
Well shit, thank you. I wouldn't have assumed it was just a sticker. I'll do some Googling to find the best way to remove it.

Need to build/buy a laptop used only for on-line transactions/shopping.

What I had in mind:
>Thinkpad of course, T420 seems fine as it will be only used for one purpose.
>libreboot, OpenBSD, encrypted system.
>disabled (disconnected) cam, mic and anything else not necessary to run.
>VPN only, most likely NordVPN

Is there are guide to do something similar to my needs?
>>
>>59327710
what kind of drugs are you selling
>>
>>59327710
x200{,s} is libreboot compatible and comes with no webcam, only a mic (which I assume you can disable in libreboot).
On top of that, it has no proprietary code at all, assuming you flash with libreboot.
OpenBSD + Libreboot on a Thinkpad X200{,s} is probably your best bet for online security.

x60, x200, and t400 are your only options that support libreboot
also there;s a dude on ebay that sells libreboot'd x200's i think, he also disconnects the mic
just look up libreboot

Is the carbon considered trash here?
I really like the aesthetics and would buy one if i got enough money, but was always wondering how sturdy they are, compared to the new x2*0 series?
>>

>Is the carbon considered trash here?

no but people who consider buying carbons are considered trash.

X60/X60s/X60t is extremely easy to libreboot via software (and indeed, the s/t versions work too). The others require hardware afaik.

Some T60 models also work with software flashing, but I don't see much reason to want one over an X60 (since w/ T60 you need to make sure to get the exact right model, meanwhile all X60/s/t work)

I actually librebooted an X60s this week. It was very painless. The Intel wi-fi card however doesn't work with free software, so I removed it.

Until, idk, the connector shorts two points on the board.

Don't be stupid like ^this guy.^ He doesn't even know what current is. I bet he's duck duck going it right now when he needs to duck duck go khs.

Put electrical tape on any loose noninsulated connections. You don't want nonsecured bare metal in your case and at the very least you don't want to worry about it while your card comes in.

I just read this.

What's the smallest laptop that you guys can recommend me? I would like it to have a nice keyboard, i'm ok with swapping the keyboard if it's like the x230 and doesn't come with one by default.

I'd like to know what the smallest one is in general, but I'd also like to know what the smallest 4:3 one is. I'm mainly looking at the x220 and the x61s, but i'm not sure what to get, I'd like to get 2; The smallest possible one for daily use, and the smallest possible one with a touchscreen for casual drawing.

I'm planning to replace my daily driver with these so I can play around with Linux and tinker a bit, I mostly just browse the internet and play old games so it doesn't need to be ultra powerful.
>>
I got offered a free (old as fuck) thinkpad. (not sure of the exact model, but it's older than the 20 series). I need to get the data off it first. The only spare drive I have is a 1tb sata hard drive. Does it have a spare sata port that I can use to just copy the data?
>>
>>59309554
bumping my question
>>
>>59329007
Get a X220t and a 2170p

>>59329041
Get a $4 usb enclosure
>>
Is the CPU replaceable in every T4xx model?

I was going for the x220 meme, but... the T420 seems more reliable
>>
>>59329296
Keyboard on the 2170p doesn't seem too nice.

Any idea about 4:3 laptops?
>>
>>59329314
It's socketed in every standard T4xx model up to the T440. Slim variants are soldered and the T440p is socketed.
>>
>>59329440
You asked for the smallest thing m8. its either that or a x131e.

And 4:3 yes, most likely x61s
>>
>>59329498
I should clarify, the standard T440 is soldered. Only the T440p has a full voltage socketed CPU in that generation.
>>
>>59329503
What's bigger? The x220 or the x61s?

I don't know how 4:3 screens are measured.
>>
>>59329531
>What's bigger? The x220 or the x61s?

both are 12" 3lbs
>>
Besides a dock, what accessories would you consider for a T420? Got one used a month ago with nothing but the charger, but I can't justify a dock just yet.
>>
>>59329660

I've already got an mSata SSD and thinking of replacing the 320gig HDD inside with another SSD. If I keep the internal HDD, is having 3 hard drives noticeably heavier and more power draining/noisy?

>>59329690
What's the benefit of a 90w charger exactly?
>>
>>59329660
May I ask, how much did you pay for it?

I was going for a T420 as well, but it's in poor condition (nearly C Grade) and the guy wants 180e
>>
>>59329708
>What's the benefit of a 90w charger exactly?
more current means faster charge
>>
>>59329708
two hard drives weigh nothing what the hell

even less if they're ssds
>>
>>59329587
But they are measured different tho, right? Doesn't that mean their actual sizes differ a bit?

What about the tablet variants of each?
>>
>>59329736
>Doesn't that mean their actual sizes differ a bit?
Their shape obviously differs but not their overall size, as their weight is indeed more or less the same.
>>
>>59329710
I got it for 130. Besides some shinyness on the keys and 4 cloudy white spots on the screen it's in good shape. I'm trying to convince myself the spots don't bother me that much, but I might replace the screen the second something else goes wrong.

>>59329721
I'll think about it, though I'm pretty tied to my desk for the most party anyway.

>>59329733
Was thinking mostly of the caddy+drive, since I was thinking of just taking the DVD out and leaving the bay empty. How about the battery drain? Mine isn't 100% and I haven't tested if I want to replace it or get a bigger one for daily unplugged use.
>>
>>59329674
>ultrabay

also make sure you dont buy a super cheap one because it's flimsy as fuck and it comes without that nipple thing at the bottom which actually keeps it in.

>>59329736
no, what are you on about? it's just that the X61s has a smaller res than the X220. the tablets are the same shit when it comes to displays but they weigh 4lbs each.

>>59329710
>I was going for a T420 as well, but it's in poor condition (nearly C Grade) and the guy wants 180e

fuck no, you're getting swindled.
>>
>>59329780
>fuck no, you're getting swindled.
well, there are literally no options

the only vendors in Europe are German, and since I live in a Mediterranean shithole, I have to pay a shitton of shipping fees
>>
>>59329803

just get a cheaper and better T410/T510/X201 or see if you find a X220i
>>
>>59329878

*better as in good condition.
>>
>>59329780
Well, if you measure a 12" 16:9 laptop from side to side, it's not actually 12", but usually slightly smaller, because you are measuring it diagonally. But idk if this applies to 4:3 laptops as well.

well you don't do that you see

you always measure it like this
>>
>>59327359
>soldered DRAM
There's usually one DRAM expansion slot.
>chiclet keyboards
The chiclet keyboards are still the best chiclet keyboards in the market and are comparable to the classic keyboards.
>becoming slimmer
How is this a bad thing?
>>
>>59330147
Exactly. You measure it like the screen is measured in that pic.

The diagonal size is usually longer than the "width".
>>
>>59329531
This >>59330147
X2** bodies compared to X6* are like an inch wider, have about the same depth, screens have less height and more width.
Google "[model name] dimensions" for exact dimensions.

>>59329525
>>59329498
Thanks! >>59304525 here.
So is the T440p the last T4** to have a socketed CPU?
>>
>>59312971
It's double-clicking for me if I have the touchpad enabled, half-clicking if the touchpad is disabled. Where that fix be? I downloaded the pack from there.
>>
Does the t440p have a magnesium rolll cage?
Is it still reliable and robust?
