If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Why is apt absolute shit? Something as simple as removing the DM results in 30+ packages marked for autoremove including the xinit, xorg, cups, python, and other packages that shouldn't even be removed. I will never again use apt based distros again like Debian or Ubuntu because no other package manager is this retarded.
>>
>>59284866
What the fuck is a DM? Also, you're either too stupid to use apt properly or are lying. Please provide screenshot of apt marking xinit and xorg for autoremove.
>>
>>59284866

You're an idiot first of all.
Apt, a package manager, isn't the culprit for such behaviour. It's the package itself, as in the person designating dependencies.
Secondly, I seriously doubt that removing a dispalay manager package would remove X11. Maybe if you installed the display manager first and X11 got pulled in as a dependency. Even then it's very unlikely.

1. Edit the preferences of Xfce's panel. It should have options where to draw it. Alternatively just drag it in "edit" mode to the other display.

3. There's an option in the settings to assign keyboard shortcuts. Use that. I think it's under "window manager" options.

So is the fundamental difference between the distros the package managers?

Still trying to figure out this out linux thing before actually trying to install it.

So do I just pick the distro with my preferred package manager and assume that I can choose everything else at install time?
Like, do I have the option of installing my preferred DE's, etc. or are most of those things set as I choose the distro?

I realize I might be overthinking it, but I would prefer to have most of my preferences set up at install time even if it takes longer, rather than trying to figure out how to uninstall, and reinstall all this shit later on.
>>
>>59285317
distros differ in several ways, including (but not limited to);
- package manager
- premade packages available officially
- whether those packages are pre-compiled, source code only, or a mix of both
- philosophy
- intended target machines/users/purposes
- installer or lack thereof
- which set of software/packages ship with it standard
- which program features are enabled/disabled
>>
>>59285317
You're not overthinking at all, you figured out what most people only get after years of linuxing: that the main difference between distros is the package manager. Other important differences are repository policy (ex: fedora only allows FOSS stuff, Canonical allows some proprietary stuff), stability (ex: ubuntu keeps having bug pop-ups, fedora works fine) and release schedule (ex: arch is rolling release (no version), fedora has a fast versioning, Debian has a slow versioning).
>>
>>59285428
also repository management
>>
>>59285317
>So is the fundamental difference between the distros the package managers?
For the most part.
>So do I just pick the distro with my preferred package manager and assume that I can choose everything else at install time?
At install time? Depends on distro, but you can always change it afterwards. Some distros have you choose when you download their iso.
>Like, do I have the option of installing my preferred DE's, etc. or are most of those things set as I choose the distro?
see above
>I realize I might be overthinking it, but I would prefer to have most of my preferences set up at install time even if it takes longer, rather than trying to figure out how to uninstall, and reinstall all this shit later on.
Each distro is geared for their task, some for servers, others for embedded, so it's not overthinking it.
>>

>>59285626

>Each distro is geared for their task, some for servers, others for embedded
Bull shit.
Your Linux kernel and other software does not care if it runs on a "server", a "daily driver" or "embedded" computer. You use the same software on all of those.

>>
>>59284944
>Is this still up to date?
Yes. Absolutely. I haven't seen any interesting new distro in last 5 years, except solus (isn't recommended for newbies btw).
>>
>>59285857
You completely missed the point. A distro that comes packaged with a LAMP stack is better for a server than your laptop, sure you can do without much issue, but it's not intended for it. Clear Linux is a distro intended for Intel cpus and doesn't have radeon graphics shipped with it, you can always manually add it in, but it's easier to just use another distro.
>>
>>59285903
you'll proably overwhelm yourself if you do too much research relative to practical usage

just start with something popular and common for your target usage (for example, ubuntu for a general purpose desktop installation)
then look further into things as they happen

remember: don't assume anything! especially if you've primarily only used one OS before, it's important not to assume you know anything about linux to begin with, not being like windows is not always a negative
>>
>>59285985

>A distro that comes packaged with a LAMP stack is better for a server than your laptop
So you want a distribution out there for the millions of possibilities of installed packages? You must be one of those idiots to whom all those "added new wallpaper to Ubuntu" distributions cater to.
I don't know much about Clear Linux, but it seems to be a niche distribution, not intended for actual use, but to showcase things. There is only a handful of distributions worth using. Using anything other than those is beyond stupid.
>>
>>59285985
You can run Centos on a laptop and never touch anything server related and you would still have the same stable environment if you went with another distro
>>
>>59286016
>it's important not to assume you know anything about linux to begin with
to give an example; a lot of people (including my clueless 14 year old self) first try installing software by searching for things in a web browser and downloading package archives only to find no installers
this is a result of assuming it would be just like windows, or mac os. old habits die hard

“LAMP” stands for “Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP”—a common combination of software to use on a web server, except that “Linux” in this context really refers to the GNU/Linux system. So instead of “LAMP” it should be “GLAMP”: “GNU, Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.”

Actually, since systemd has almost replaced GNU by now, instead of "GLAMP" it should be "SLAMP": Systemd, Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. We could still have "GNU" around for legacy reasons until the next release, so let's call it SLAMPG where GNU is the last and least important.

I just installed Ubuntu 16.04.2 on TP430s.
I want to optimise battery time for uni and so far, I installed and enabled Powertop and TLP.
TLP wanted me to install acpi_call and I did.
However, it still want me to install tp_smapi and tpacpi-bat.

Now I'm under the impretion that those aren't even supported bu IvyBridge TP's. Can I still do something about it or is TLP just trooling me ?

I'm trying to use a Gentoo livecd on a thinkpad p70, and the thing won't ever boot up in UEFI mode even though the motherboard supports it. Whenever I try to partition the disks (in legacy mode which I think is BIOS) and add the "boot" flag, it automatically adds the "ESP" flag, even though I'm not in UEFI mode. If I ignore it and go on, and then install grub, the thing still won't boot up in legacy (which I think is BIOS) mode. I have safeboot or secureboot or whatever it's called off.

Can someone help me understand how dependency conflicts arise?

I'm trying to understand the technical details but the majority of explanations online seem to just be generic:
>You can't install multiple versions of packages at the same time
but why?

Here is my current understanding, please correct me if I am wrong:
Dependency conflicts arise due to the fact that applications link to "major" versions of libraries rather than exact versions, but at the same time might depend on exact versions.
e.g. two applications might link to "lib.so.2", which is a symlink to some exact version, but one of the packages actually depends on the exact version "lib.so.2.0" and the other depends on "lib.so.2.1", and the symlink can't link to both at the same time so there is a conflict

Is that it?
Surely such a silly thing as conflict over a symlink can't be solely responsible for the monumental waste of time and energy each distros maintainers need to put in to reinvent the wheel maintaining tons of separate repositories and package formats just because they all have different ideas about how to resolve those symlink discrepancies?
Please tell me there's a more complex reason for this than just symlinks

Why is setting up proper graphics in kvm+qemu such a fucking pain in the ass?

The options for emulating the VGA card are
-vga [std|cirrus|vmware|qxl|xenfb|tcx|cg3|virtio|none]

all of which either don't work with Windows or are shit, besides qxl which can give me pretty good performance ONLY if used in conjunction with SPICE (otherwise it's shit, even with the driver).
And what I mean by shit is not being able to fucking move or resize a simple window without it lagging, tearing and leaving trails all over the place.
I don't want to play shitty games, I just want to make the OS usable.

and for some reason I can't connect (pic related).

I tried following the arch wiki also (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/QEMU#SPICE)
but it wasn't very helpful.

There's really little documetntation and forum threads on this topic in general.

I'm guessing the problem lies with the Windows guest, although I should have installed everything I needed for this.

God damn setting up KVM to swap an nvidia GPU between host and guest is a pain. I want to be able to use my dGPU on both operating systems.

Don't know if it is even possible currently, heard some people mention it could be pulled off by restarting xserver and rebinding but I couldn't get it working that way.

I hope that GPUs become more flexible in the near future allowing a user to share resources efficiently between guest VMs and the host without blacklisting and vfio bind/unbind fuckery.

For now I have given up on the prospect and decided on two VMs that get assigned the dGPU while the host runs in a corner on a separate monitor.

Still better than resorting to dual booting since I can share resources between VMs, not sure how I would go about backing up my data probably through rsync to a shared folder with samba since I couldn't get snapshots working with a GPU passed through.

In addition imo I think the differences between distros is
QE, some distros do an incredible amount of testing on each package to make sure it works right. And each distro picks different versions of packages some only use very stable versions and other distros use the bleeding edge.
Support lifetime, some distros only support a release for a few months, others support for about 3 years and other distros support a release for like 10 years.

On distros that release new versions faster the faster lifecycle means if you have written any of your own custom code, you'll have to rewrite it to upgrade to newer versions of APIs.

Speaking of which... I have used Gentoo for years and Arch and Fedora and for the last few years I've been on Ubuntu LTS because of time constraints I dont have time anymore to tinker with everything and Ubuntu LTS stays stable doesnt need a lot of debugging during package upgrades and the releases are supported for years so I dont have to constantly keep up every few months with new releases.
I kind of wish there was a LTS version of Fedora (no, not CentOS), Fedora with all the Fedora packages, but more stale and longer term support.

I currently have a server. File server is running Windows 7 and sharing several drives over the network. I am able to connect to this server no problem from all of the machine's in my network. (2 Ubuntu 16.04, and 2 windows. 10/7). I'm also able to wirelessly connect from my android phone, tablet, and Chromebook.

Randomly, the Linux machines and Android devices can no longer connect. The server and other such connected devices on the network no longer even appear in the "my network" section of their file managers. Even typing the IP of the server in manually doesn't work. They continue to give the "connection timed out" error and that only way to fix this is to restart the server.

Yet the Chromebook and windows PCs on the same network do not have this problem at all. Why can't Linux into networking? I thought this was supposed to be a strong suit of Linux?

No, it isn't. "install gentoo" is a meme. Gentoo is not a meme.

I don't know dude. i guess don't be a pedophile or a criminal?

I don't know it's hard to worry about shit that you have pretty much no control over, just don't do illegal shit. Doesn't meanyou have to use every social media and get spied on but I don't see the big deal if you're not some sort of ringleader of a crime syndicate.

kind of is, dude. Just don't be a criminal or conspire to overthrow the government and you'll be A-OK
>>
>>59297254
Gentoo is less of a waste of time than any other system because it's the only OS that just werks without breaking once installed. If a program can be updated, the program will work. Almost the opposite is true on debian which often goes so far as to pretend to provide a program, but actually provides an x windows program that simply pops up a window to tell you that debian does not provide the program, if you're lucky. Otherwise you get shit that breaks all the fucking time, and everytime you upgrade a library, every single program in the system stop functioning. """stable""".

I'm not arguing that I DON'T care about privacy, I'm just saying that unfortunately it's impossible to have 100% privacy and I really don't care all that much because I'm not a criminal.

I don't use any social media, but I do use a google account for convenience, I don't discuss overthrowing the government, I don't sell drugs, I'm not part of a terrorist organization

>Le everyone is spying on ME
>EVERYONE CARES ABOUT MY PONY PORN COLLECTION, AHHH

do you really think of yourself so much that you think people dedicate time and resources to spying on you? Get over yourself faggot, or maybe go back to sending letters and using deadrops to communicate because the internet is and will continue to be monitored.
>>
>>59297363
It is a fact. If you weren't such a lost cause I'd suggest that you go work for one of the big tech companies because they're very, very proud of the fact they collect every single bit of information they can get their greedy hands on about you and about the fact they store the information including personally-identifiable information.
>>
>>59297388
Okay, let's say this is completely true.

What am I suppose to about it? Drop out of society and live in the middle of the forest? Sorry man but I'm willing to let people collect some info on me if it means I get to enjoy the services they provide.
>>

>>

Good. Don't make any mistakes, either. Oh, don't engage in any anti-establishment activism, either. See someone in power doing something wrong? You betta shut the fuck up and mind your god-damned business. Do as your told. It's only wrong if WE say it is. 2+2=5, o.k.? You are a good citizen- you have nothing to fear.
>>
>>59297467
How do you expect it to be? Can you honestly say you're surprised?

People want to seize and maintain power, if you go against the system the system starts fucking you in the ass back. Just a fact of life.
>>
>>59297487
if the system was fucking you in the ass in the first place you're a cuck if you don't go against it
>>
>>59297510
Yeah that's all nice and dandy as words on an anime imageboard but when it comes down to it you wouldn't make significant sacrifice and possibly even get imprisoned or die for your beliefs.

Would you pick up a rifle and fight against an unjust system, even if you were outnumbered? Probably not so go fuck yourself.

Being concerned about your privacy isn't just for degenerates and terrorist. The issue isn't when someones going to come and get you and kill/lock you up. The problem is with the subtle ability to (legally) manipulate and influence the human mind.

We have a plethora of powerful actors (state, corporate, religious) collecting and analyzing massive amounts of information and then creating, tailoring media (sometimes weaponized) to control the general population.

I, and a lot others, would like to limit the amount of propaganda, for lack of a better term, in our lives.

I want to enjoy a cup of coffee on a cool yet sunny morning, watching the dew drip from a blade of grass. Without my iFag s3X alterting me to an amazon sale of bulk foodsafe lubricant.

>Would you pick up a rifle and fight against an unjust system, even if you were outnumbered?
what the fuck are even you on about

I'd most certainly raise my voice against deep issues and if that would get me imprisoned, anonimity and privacy would be nice to have
>>
>>59297646
No, your voice isn't needed. Everyone can post an angry thread but how many are willing to take action - physical action?

Too many thinkers, too many demagogues, not enough doers.

If possible, find a youtube tutorial of installation of the distro you're looking into. It'll give you an idea of what you will have control over.

There is nothing 'tinfoil' about any of these concerns. "Conspiracy Theory," is a term created by intelligence agencies to obfuscate people with reasonable concerns about the way modern society is run.

Of course, digital security is a cat and mouse game and there will always be an exploit if you spend enough time/effort/money. The point isn't to drive yourself crazy locking down all of your electronics, you should develop a lifestyle where privacy is important and you focus on it. You should limit your use of computers to the instances where they really improve your life, as opposed to how most people make it their life.

Its a fine balance, if you pull it off, no one will look anyway.
