How comes?

From previous thread.

Any pointers what to research if I want to build a physical side storage with multiple drives that act as one drive and preferably have some sort of RAID control to reduce risk of failure that can be accessed from my main machine as if it was just an external hard drive?

I've heard about NAS, but not sure if it meets these requirements.

I want a very simple server to play around with dumb shit.
It doesn't need to be beefy, would a Pentium 4 with 1 GB DDR1 suffice? I have the option to have that donated to me for Computer Science courses, but I am not sure if it'll even work.
Ideally I'd be installing Apache and some Linux distros to play around with - worth mentioning I never used/installed Linux before, so the point is for training exclusively.
Or should I opt for a old Xeon for that type of purpose?

With my company that usually means the server received your request but hung after telling you it was gonna send you something, so it sends you a blank page instead. Usually if it's connectivity-related you would get a numerical error code.

Look up FreeNAS builds. When configuring the software, take the options for samba/CIFS. You'll be able to add that storage pool as a network location and browse to it with a drive letter.

When using FreeNAS, will I only be able to access contents of the storage through some network protocol or will there be a physical connection available somewhere? I thought about FreeNAS before, but wasn't sure of how the storage is accessed from a machine.

What about encryption support? Does it require external tools to encrypt things, or does the underlying system already handle it?
>>
>>59238848
If you mean plugging into it over USB like an external drive, no - you need to use the network to transfer to other devices

You can do disk encryption though freenas itself or you can use encrypted containers on it

Does a 64-bit OS use a 64-bit blocksize for memory?
If so, does it not waste more memory by placing values smaller than 8 bytes into 8 byte blocks, as opposed to placing them into 4 byte blocks like 32-bit systems?

But there's no direct access to the upper 32 bits in R registers, just like there's isn't any to the upper 16 bits of E registers, right?
You'd have to shift those registers if you want to access the values stored in the upper register parts?
Does that mean that 64-bit systems either waste more memory or execute slightly slower than 32-bit systems in most cases?

I guess the increase in total addressable system memory would still make 64-bit systems better, but I wouldn't have suspected such a drawback.

I ordered new build parts last week (MSI Z170M Mortar, i5-6600k, Corsair 2x8GB DDR4-2666 MHz, 550W EVGA power supply) and got them earlier this week. Put everything together, got it working, 6 hours later had a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSOD in the middle of installing shit, and trying to boot into Windows after that gave me any of about 8 different blue screen error codes, from SECURITY_KERNEL_CHECK_FAILURE to IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I also got a kernel panic trying to boot any Linux LiveUSB. After stripping the system down to motherboard, power supply, CPU, power supply and one RAM stick, it still did this. I got the system to boot after a chance Leddit tech support post from a year ago about Skylake processors having a dead core and only working with an overclock. Lo and behold, setting a mild (3.5GHz to 4.2GHz) overclock and overvoltage got the system running.
This is gonna be a 2 part post, fuck
>>
>>59240460 Continued
Since I was going to RMA the processor anyway, after a day I lowered the clock speeds back to their defaults in BIOS, and now the system won't even POST.

My question is: what are the odds that it's the i5-6600k shitting itself? Every symptom I had before the system wouldn't POST is identical to some Skylake defective CPU threads I came across.

I'm looking to buy a new hard drive for media storage. Money isn't an issue per se but equally I'm not keen on the idea of spending money for the sake of it. Speed isn't a massive issue; HDDs are completely fine. I was thinking of going with a Toshiba X300 6TB, does this sound like a sensible option or can you suggest a better alternative?
>>
>>59240728
Classes are custom types that you define by yourself.
Objects are complex variables which can contain other variables in them.
You can put functions in there which will operate upon the data in the object.

Out of the box you have things like boolean, int, double etc, which aren't enough to represent problems.
Say you want to draw a line on the screen. You need coordinates and a color to represent your data. You can go:
int x1, y1, x2, y2;
int color;

with classes you go:

class YourLine {
Point start, end;
Color color;
}

class Point {
int x, y;
}

class Color {
byte r,g,b,a;
}

//and then to create the object
YourLine line = new YourLine();

>>
>>59241195
If you're smart you only have to write shit once.
But it's just an illusion. If you're smart, any language can do that for you.

The real reason is control. Object oriented languages usually have tons of safe-guards that prevent you and your colleagues from making beginner mistakes. If you're working in a team, these safe guards guarantee that the team leader can weed out obvious mistakes from the other team members without having to go through every line they write, saving him (and yourself) time.

Carbon only 'cause I wanted more USB 3.1 ports. Figures you might want something like it. Even though it doesn't support DDR4-3200 AFAIK (few mainboards do that or faster, but they again cost a hundred or more more).

Also check out logicalincrements.

> but I have no idea what makes one top tier or a house fire starter kit
They never start house fires, but maybe it's a crash engine. Can't really ever get a particularly objective review of these though.

Just pick the ports and approximate specs you need supported and then check if people found any horrible flaws with the model(s) you wanted. It's about as much as you can do.

IMO, only do pretty large upgrades that gain you like 50-100% on each component that you care about and are currently upgrading. It's more worth your time. [I'm not saying you need to get the highest end components available at the time though - usually that's just pointless overkill.]

So yea, swap the Mainboard too if you already are doing it. Or make this machine your Linux box and build a new faster gaming PC.

You probably got it right. May I suggest quickly sucking up the dust with a vacuum cleaner? Just hover the nozzle at a distance above the board, it should usually do the job.

> d if they all go in the buttom what do the pins above do?
Typically most things on your case just go into 1-2 groups of pins, yes.

Can't tell what the other pins are for right now. But pins can have a lot of functions on boards. Some are for (setting/clearing/overriding) settings, some are for connecting ports, and other things.

Usually you have this documented in a manual somewhere, download it...

>>59243576
You could make an intermediate file, but it'd be equally common just to use a shell pipes to hand the archive listing generated by "7z l archive.7z" to "sort".

In case of various non-shell scripting languages that don't have a suitable equivalent to a pipe it'd typically be just some array / list type of structure containing strings if not a trie / prefix tree (which certainly isn't implemented in every language's standard library, unfortunately).

> How would I then make 7zip extract in that order
After you used "sort" or another sorting mechanism on the list, you just tell 7z to extract each entry in that order.

AFAIK you did one file extraction like this:
7z x file.7z path_in_archive/file_in_archive

So obviously you'd just take that "path_in_archive/file_in_archive" bit from your sorted list.

That CPU you linked is FM2, not AM3. AM3 can't use an APU since there's no link out of the socket for graphics (or even PCIe), it's just power + DDR3 + HyperTransport to the chipset.
Only option to improve graphics there is to add a PCIe card. You're limited to single slot, low profile, so the best you can do without modding is an R7 240 like this http://pcpartpicker.com/product/7RQypg/xfx-video-card-r7240aclf2.

I tend to wait until they die or start failing. Normally with mechanical drives you will get some warning, and often it's not terrible to go about recovering if necessary. But in all seriousness, if you are worried about losing data, set up a raid, or some other method of backup/redundancy.

Like if you have the money and are worried, back up your data, buy another drive similarly sized to your current one and set up a raid 1, or get two and set up a raid 5.
>>
>>59245294
Shitty as it is, it seems like everyone's going the way of only optimizing their shit for Win 10. I use Win 7 and would obviously say it;s way better, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a new build.

We live in a cruel world, anon, where hardware manufacturers buy into Windows's botnet OS and leave God's OS in the dust. But you;'re either gonna have to suck it up and live with the botnet or figure out Arch or Debian (and if you're going to make the switch to Linux it honestly should be one of those two distros).
>>
>>59245312

1. learning webdev

if you cap a game to render slower than your computer can handle, the hardware is used less, and makes less heat

it's pretty common to cap your framerate on laptops/mobile devices, where it also saves power

you need to sort out your cooling system if you can't max out your components without overheating

I've got a BluTooth usb dongle that seems to be really fuckin' picky about how it is oriented in the slot, like just a tiny nudge to the left (even when it appears to be seated all the way in there) and it will not function any more, tiny nudge to the right and it will work just fine.

This my question to you: If it is in the "working" position should I still worry that some contact issues will cause it to not function as optimally as it could? Or if it seems to be working fine should I just not worry about it? It's not really hard to position it in a way in which it will work, but it does make me wonder if the contacts are bad and will cause other problems down the line.

chromecast works by streaming h264 encoded videos to it, in order to use it a s a normal cable something has to be constantly recording, encoding and sending your desktop to the chromecast.

there are several tools that do this like the chromecast extension for chrome, but there's no way to use it without those.

or if that's impossible how to install windows 7 legacy/bios on uefi mobo?
>>

Not sure about the first one. For the second one:

-Grab a Windows 7 iso
-Use Rufus to put it on USB and select the MBR option for legacy bios
-Try looking on BIOS for an option that will let you work with legacy drives, which should be there if Windows 7 was installed on that thing. Would be a different matter if you got one of those shitty windows tablets.
>>
>>59248483
>I just installed trisquel on a Thinkpad yoga 14 and the wifi isn't working.

trisquel uses linux-libre which doesn't include binary firmware but all thinkpads use intel wifi cards which require binary firmware, something that would work with linux-libre is some atheros cards but not all do and thinkpads require you to use intel wifi cards

the solution to use onboard is to find out whatever driver it uses and (probably) download the source and compile it, I'm sure there's binary drivers but it's usually just included with the standard kernel so you might be SOL in that regard -- there's plenty of documentation and tutorials to compile wifi drivers and load them or compile into the kernel

alternatively just use ubuntu

>I bought an adapter thinking that would solve the problem but it hasn't.

again, unless it's an adapter that can work with linux-libre it's not going to work unless you manually find the drivers and install them, it *probably* works out of the box on ubuntu again (your onboard 100% will work out of the box on ubuntu)

>convert the file to work with trisquel

The cable shielding of the power brick of an old laptop of mine has opened up and I need a new power brick.

The issue is that the input of the laptop (Asus G60V) is 19V at 6.3A.

I want to give this laptop to someone and I don't think it has a very long lifespan left. Buying a replacement adapter from the vendor is very expensive.

When I look at universal power bricks the only one I find that comes close is a Trust 120W 19v/6A (EAN: 8713439168914) brick.

Would it be possible to use this power brick or will it bring significant risk?

pic related is from a review for the cyborg, you won't get *that* much extra cooling out of a corsair h105

too bad about the shitty TIM they used, my 140w soldered cpu on air with only 1 fan barely even touches 60-70c under heavy but non-synthetic loads

as far as delidding goes you'll probably get decent temps out of it but it's not the end of the world if you can't do it, just slap a couple of extra case fans in and run them on higher load and you'll get some improved temps out of it

that said, 80c isn't that high, you mention stability issues, what are you experiencing? it should be fine if you aren't overclocking (or aren't overclocking by much)

>>59249277
>aside from warranty what's the biggest risk of deliding

if you use the razor method you run the risk of cutting into the pcb and severing traces

if you use the hammer and vice method, assuming you don't get a freak accident the risks usually are you'll take other components like capacitors out

>>59249297
>well fuck should I just wait for the new i7s? hopefully they'll use better paste

maybe look back to earlier cpus, the haswell-e series are soldered, I think skylake-e is too

the next gen might have better tim so it looks like intel did a hell of a lot better on power management in benchmarks (look! 10-15c better temps!) but that's wishful thinking at best
