Is spring drive a meme?

It seems like it's overcomplicating things for no reason.

And ruining the "soul" of mechanical watches.

If you wanted a quartz timed watch why not buy a quartz watch?

There are watch movements so beautiful and intricate that they count as some of the highest achievements in human engineering. But I guess your chart is good too, OP.

I think it's really nice. The fact that the "escapement" procures its electrical power from the very mechanism it regulates is incredibly cool to me.
It's an elegant and integrated way to increase the accuracy of a mechanical watch.

It reminds me a bit of the reason I love railguns: the projectile is part of the electrical circuit that gives propulsion to it. If you don't think that's the neatest shit you can get out of my face.

Also, spring drive is the only movement with a truly smooth seconds hand.
>>
>>59169477
>It's an elegant and integrated way to increase the accuracy of a mechanical watch.

But when do we get to the point where you might as well have a quartz watch?

It's like compound bow archers should just get it over with and shoot guns.

>>
>>59169429
Nobody likes the bracelets, and the cases of the Komandirskies (and bezels on all of them) are indeed plated brass (not bronze, that would be too expensive).

They're obviously not liked for their amazing quality and finishing, but for their cheapness and quirkiness of design.

>>

They're in house movements for under 50 bucks bruh, what's not to love
>>
>>59169494
I see it as just a different escapement. It is indeed quartz, which in itself is pretty much figured out, but the integration in a mechanical movement presents its own set of challenges that conventional escapements don't have.

And for me, the main difference between quartz and mechanical is the way the hands are driven, not the way timekeeping is achieved.

Of course, I totally get why some people don't like spring drive, and I'm not about to tell them they're wrong.

Bows are cool and guns are too, and they feel nothing alike to shoot. That's a skewed comparison.
>>
>>59169529
komandirskies are $35 and amphibias $70
>>
>>59169549
>they feel nothing alike to shoot.

Yeah but a compound bow has pulleys to take the weight of the draw, trigger mechanisms to ensure a quick release, and magnified sights.

Like when do you just admit you might as well shoot a gun?

I do archery, but I shoot real bows aka recurve.

Why do Seiko call the spring drive movement the latest technology in watches?

Surely it's outdated technology?

It's quartz bits attached on to a mechanical watch, there is no reason for the mechanics, they are just hindering the quartz.

Surely the 9F movement is more advanced.

No, spring drive was developed well after the stepper motor quartz movement.

>It's quart bits attached on to a mechanical watch

That statement doesn't make any sense.

>They are just hindering the quartz

That statement doesn't make any sense either.
>>
>>59172340
It's outdated because mechanical watch technology is outdated.

You're just attempting to remove the downsides of mechanical watches, when that was already done by Quartz movements.

It's marketed as +1/-1 per day. A fully quartz movement could do better.

To use an analogy it's like a very advanced steam powered car.

It could be the most advanced steam powered car in history, but it's still a steam powered car.
>>
>>59172385
Most spring drives get better accuracy than 15s/month. The only pure quartz movements that could do better are the HAQ ones like seiko's 9F which is thermo-compensated.

So you would just rather it be powered by a battery than a mainspring?
>>
>>59172385

>tfw no hyperaccurate quartz watch
>>
>>59172385
>Mechanical watch technology is outdated

It isn't, but that's not relevant here since spring drive isn't a mechanical movement in the sense it's traditionally meant.

>You're just attempting to remove the downsides of mechanical watches

Says who? Seiko doesn't seem to have stopped producing mechanical watches, even very high end mechanical watches.

Seiko have also not stopped making high end stepper motor quartz movements.

This idea that spring drive was meant to supplant another type of movement seems to be entirely in your own head.

Actually spring drive was developed mostly to eliminate batteries and to achieve a perfect smooth second hand sweep to make a more elegant solution than stepper motor quartz, not to improve accuracy.
>>
>>59172610
Seiko still make mechanical watches because of watch autists.

Everyone attempted to move to quartz in the 70s and 80s and every watch company would prefer it if they could only make quartz watches due to better cost vs profitability margins.

Guess what m8, springs drives can do that too. The ratings are just CYA specs. You may luck out and get something much more accurate, but you wouldn't be able to complain to seiko or whoever until it went outside of the cited spec.
>>
>>59172385
I assume that you're saying "mainsprings are outdated"? Because that's basically the only thing that's in a spring drive and not in an ordinary stepper motor quartz analog watch.

I could see an argument for an ecodrive spring drive being more modern than a real spring drive, but that's about it. Automatic winding plus mainspring is a pretty good energy system, anyways.

There are innovations spring drive could benefit from that are not in standard everyday quartz watches (thermocompensation, GPS sync, etc), but that's a different argument from the one you're making.

You assume they don't because you are totally ignorant of horology. Seiko in particular have a long history of obsessive commitment to horology over and above the profit motive going back to the chronometer trials in the 1960s.

They literally spent 25 years developing spring drive, even though they already had developed stepper motor quartz and extremely well made mechanical movements. They were under no market pressure to develop spring drive because no one outside of Seiko had conceived that such a movement was even a hypothetical possibility until Seiko revealed it.

When did Piaget start working on it? Seiko began developing spring drive in 1977 and had a working prototype in 1982, shelved the idea for 10 years because it took way too much power, started working on it again in 1993. It took until 1998 for Seiko to debut the technology, once they'd gotten to a 48h power reserve.

As far as I can tell, Piaget launched the 700P in 2016?

Yeah but with a sarb the cost of service and the cost of the watch are.. very close. So you pretty much never service it.

You buy a 5k watch, average service is like 500 lets say. You could service it 10 times before you hit the cost of the watch. That's 50 years at a 5 year service interval. Or 48 years if you do your first service 2 years early.

Inflation not accounted for.

Not a super straightforward question, but Jean-Claude Berney was at least thinking about it back in 1973. This link goes into it a little and has some follow-up links with some more detail. Supposedly some ETA 2824s were actually fitted with such a movement in the 70s or 80s, per the below paper.

>>59173542
I honestly don't see the appeal of nato straps. You add a mm or two to the height of the watch, then there's all this bulk on one side of the strap.

"But you can easily change the colors/style of your strap!" But then no matter what you get an ugly mass of nylon. Single buckle straps like on the group b or the two piece perlons on some nomos' are fine though.
>>
>>59173572

That's for a vintage chronograph, including some parts.

A regular three handers plus day/date movement should be considerably cheaper to have serviced. Hell, my local watchmaker does three handers for $150 and he's quite highly regarded.
>>
>>59173604

>>
If you live in Britain the official Seiko service centre only charges £55 for a "Standard Movement/Mechanism Service", which I'm sure the Alpinist would fall under.

I don't imagine the American service price to be any higher than that.
>>

Well, chronos are a little more complicated and costly. Omega charges 700 afaik. An independent might be able to reduce that some.

Rolex charges like 600 to service a new datejust I believe. But other watchmakers might be able to do it for 400 or maybe less.
>>
>>59173651
I was looking at their prices and it literally says that if they "service" a Lorus watch they will just send you a new one.

Also thanks for helping me find a badass fully automatic, my very first and only one ever, that's got a fucking tourbillion and a perfectly smooth second hand, and I got that shit from China for $35 fucking dollars. Looking for some guidance on the Shitter 1963.

I am probably going to buy one this week or next depending on how I feel. However, I am running into complications between where to buy it from.

On the one hand, if you buy it from WatchUnique it is cheaper than some other spots however, it also does not appear to be the official seagull version. If recent seagull anon could post his crown that would be great.

On the other hand, if you buy from lets say Long Island Watch it is more expensive but appears to be the proper watch straight from when Seagull was making them.

It's not that I don't trust Thomas's version and some swear that his are better, it feels weird buying a recreation of a recreation. Does it even matter?

is it a trump watch
>>
>>59185110

The Pontiff already has his Patek paid off somehow. It looks like he can contain his autism for luxury goods for at least another 300 videos.
