Ducky has some nice TKLs, you might have to shop around for browns. Also they mostly have doubleshot high quality keycaps
Coolermaster uses a decent OEM (costar) on their Rapid series. Look into the Rapid-i and a decent set of aftermarket keycaps if you don't like the stock ones.
Varmilo is very high quality, but pretty expensive as well.

Its like legos m8. All the parts fit nicely together and the soldering is piss easy. You dont have to solder the switches if you get a mounting plate, but you should. You can program the keyboard by using the thousands of different tools online
>>
>>59143966
what switches should i look for if I like blues but wish there was less resistance? Like, I love the tactile feel but wish the keys were a bit lighter
Should i look at something like gaterons or mattias or something of the sort?

>>59150136
Matias switches are slightly heavier then blues, and the lightest clicky switch made by gaterons is a clone of cherry blues. If you want you can get something like a cherry g80 with PCB mount switches for like 30 bucks used then replace the springs with a lighter variant. If you don't like the look of cherry keyboards then you can get anything else as long as its PCB mount
>>
>>59150150
Magicforce has a lot more options if you get it from massdrop.
>>
>>59150415
Yeah that's the one I was looking at. Do you know if their boards are solid?
>>
>>59150474
I've heard good things about the Magicforce 68, no real reason to believe this one is any different.

Considering getting it myself too, I could use a second board that's a little quieter. Anyone know if Gateron Browns are the quiet/tacticle combo like the Cherry Browns?
>>
>>59150474
For a chinese keyboard they are definitely one of the better ones out there. The font on their keycaps is hit or miss, but that's something that can be replaced. The magicforce 68 is a great 65% keyboard so I don't think the 82 key version will be that much different

>>59150545
>Anyone know if Gateron Browns are the quiet/tacticle combo like the Cherry Browns?
why do people keep falling for this meme. The loudest part of the switch is the sound of bottoming out, which can be reduced if you don't get a keyboard with a floating design like magicforce and razer. Having thicker keycaps and some o-rings will also help make it even more quieter.
>>
>>59150545
>>59150568
Thanks guys, will probs pick it up now!
>>
>>59150650
I have blues now, with O-rings, and I can type without bottoming out. The only sound it still makes is the click, not the clack. This sound is too loud for an office (at least one where not everyone wears headphones) so I want to try something quieter. Does that chart you show include the sound of bottoming out?
>>
>>59150728
>Does that chart you show include the sound of bottoming out?
I guess browns are naturally louder then blues according to that chart, or maybe its just that razer uses thin keycaps and a floating design that results in their keyboards being louder when you bottom out.
If you want quiet just get a keyboard with matias quiet click

>>
>>59150841
I'm on a fairly tight budget so I'm not going for the Matias.

Also I hear absolutely everywhere else that the browns are quieter than the blues, and that this still counts for Gaterons. So I'm kind of skeptical of that chart. If it turns out to be necessary I'll mod it with a sound dampening mat.
>>
>>59151061
I made the mistake of attempting to convey sarcasim on the internet. What I should have said is that if you do buy the magicforce don't expect it to be quiter and that its about as loud as the razer keyboard with browns since they share the same design
>>

I can't use "é", "è" on normal layouts, and they are often used in my mother tongue. Should I buy orings to dampen the sounds of the brown switches ? It's my first mech keyboard so I don't know if they would be useful. Do they degrade over time ?
>>
>>59151420
>can't use "é", "è"
I use a compose key for those, but I usually type English anyway.
>Should I buy orings
Yes, if you bottom out while typing. Give it a try without o-rings and see if the sound bothers you.

Heck yeah, if that's your budget and brown is what you want. Probably be a good idea to expect to replace the keycaps when they shine up tho. I've been pleased as punch.

That said, there's nothing wrong with Ducky!

>>59152516
Not a good choice for firsties, no. High recoil, much filth and smoke because direct blowback, much fiddling to get working right, and 9mm is ballistically impotent from a 16" barrel (It's meant for 4-5"). 5.56 a best.

Nice trips and nice ABS spacebar. You can make an adapter yourself for like 20 bucks if you don't mind splicing some cables. There are plenty of guides and documentation online. I'd recommed you check deskthority, that way if you have more questions some one there who made those adapters could help you
>>
>>59153618
>nice ABS spacebar.
I know right. Weird that everything else is PBT but the spacebar is shitty ABS.
And I don't have the tools nor the will to build an adapter myself. And I don't even know if the keyboard works anyway. How do I test if it works if I can't plug it in anywhere.
>>
>>59153356
Thank you, but look at the "Home" button, it printed a bit faded.
Also look at the "||" symbol, it's cut in half. Otherwise they are THICC and sound nice bottomed out.
>>
>>59152882
At least is looks like it has a standard bottom row. I don't really like the floating switch design or the height of oem keycaps personally.
>>59153131
They are pretty cheap on mechanicalkeyboards.com , the 750r goes for 115. You are not going to get them cheaper than that. Lots of places make tenkeyless boards, it is not exactly a rare layout.
>>59153678
Can't test it without plugging it in. Buy an adapter if you want to use it or just sell it, someone will buy it for the switches. It is very likely that it works unless it is obviously damaged.

What comes after cherry? Will there ever be another industry standard, or will they all be proprietary solutions with no aftermarket support and paperthin keycaps that keeps people stuck with 40 year old cherry stems?

Romer-G was a total misfire but they had some good features, larger footprint where the switch meets the keycap that does better with off center strikes with an open center for LED lighting that actually looks good. the awful oxtagonal keycaps on the 910 killed it though
>>
>>59156723
It'd probably need to have the MX cross style stem, regardless of the switch's actual construction.

Beamspring with MX support in a split ergodox style board when?

Maybe regular TKL isn't so bad. But for any of these I would have to get a numpad unfortunately and the only decent one I see is the $100 Realforce which is literally just the price of my base keyboard over again
>>
>>59156012
every time a reviewer does a keyboard review they whine about there being micro usb instead of USB C
>>
>>59157715
Probably because micro USB is fucking garbage, the only advantage it has for keyboards is people make those magnetic micro USB cables so you can just stick one of those in and not worry about the cable getting destroyed from removing it.

mini USB > USB-C > micro USB
>>
>>59157704
Oh yeah. I don't get why those are pad printed. The leopold numpads are pretty nice and run around $60. Also they have laser engraved keys instead of pad printing. I went with a tenkeyless + a numpad and am pretty happy with them.
>>59157772
USB-C is far better than both mini and micro. There is no reason to dislike C other than being a Luddite who hates change.
>>
>>59157833
I don't dislike C, it's just more expensive, has less availability for cables right now and is physically larger, so mini's better currently for keyboard purposes.
>>
I'm new to mechanical keyboards and I seen that one or two have said they are a hybrid, are they legit or am I being taken for a ride?
>>
>>59157886
Keyboards come with cables and they all end in full size usb connectors anyway. USB C is more robust.
>>59157913

They might be referring to topre which has a spring inside a rubber dome. It has its own unique feeling that many like.

If this hybrid is something cheap then it's likely a scam.

Falling for the Planck meme was a huge fucking mistake.
The ortholinear layout is extremely uncomfortable to type on, making the board impossible for real work. The default layout is horrible, and building new layouts for flashing requires hard-coding it on C.

Spare yourself the frustration and get a TKL if you want a compact board.
>>
>>59158347
Should have gotten a split ortho board with a thumb cluster m8.
>>
Is it normal for keys to feel a bit different after you've taken them out and put them back on?
they feel almost de-vriginized, first time having a mech keyboard no bully
>>
>>59158347
Writing C is no problem for me and I already maintain a mess of layout customisations in software, so being able to have that handled in firmware is very appealing.

Can you elaborate on why it's uncomfortable for you, is it just the matrix layout? I've tried an ergodox before and while I liked the ortho layout, prolonged use gave me pain in my thumbs.

You're likely suffering from placebo. It can be managed with proper treatment, but I'm afraid that many simply succumb to spending inordinate amounts of money on keycaps and magical switches.

The problem was I found it just wasn't very ergonomic or comfortable. It felt cramped, and the grid layout seemed more hipsterism than something that was optimized for its small size. My wrists bend at an awkward angle and start hurting after about 5 minutes of use.

Some people like it, and if you have no problem programming it, it just might be the thing for you. I might list mine on eBay, so keep an eye out.

PS: Your hands are in a completely different position on an Ergodox, in which such a grid layout is more optimal.
There's a good reason keys on ordinary keyboards are staggered. Gridded layouts bend and strain the wrists.

>>59158583
I'm inclined to take your advice since I also have a W520 and T60(P).
I'm not exactly clear on how it can feel more cramped than a regular keyboard when the keys are a standard size, but perhaps that's something that becomes apparent in use. The only issue I see initially is that I'm one of those odd few who actually use both shift keys and they either be in terrible spots, or shadowing z and /.

What switches did you get and how much are you considering selling it for? Perhaps I'll try hand-wiring something to see if it suits me before I drop $150.
>>

>>
Why do buckling springs feel so b
Mushy at the bottom out? Not solid at all, definitely not gonna be any prolonged typing on this thing
>>
>>59158714
The trouble is mainly in the wrists, they're bent at an unnatural angle while typing and it gets very uncomfortable. The keys are full-size, but the reduced layout with layers is difficult to get accustomed to. Think using a (vertical) smartphone keyboard for the first time.

The shift was big a problem for me too, but I programmed 2 shifts in a custom layout.

I got the board with Gateron reds, which may or may not be your preference. I'd be willing to sell it for $90 plus postage from the US, shoot me an email at [email protected] if you're interested.

Membrane or capacitive?
>>
>>59158812
How do I tell the difference?
>>

Model Ms are membrane, model Fs are capacitive. It might just be that you need to replace the rubber sheet in the board and do the bolt mod.

http://pimpmykeyboard.com/sa-ice-cap-keyset/ is the only set they currently have available.
>>
>>59158900
Then yeah, it's a membrane. I'll look into a bolt mod and membrane replacement.

On a similar note, I want a 122 key Unicomp, are they also membrane or would those be capacitive?
>>
>>59158914
Are you responding to the wrong post? That picture was of Matt3o's custom profile, not SP's SA.
>>
>>59158922
Unicomp doesn't make model Fs.
>>
>>59158796
If its an old keyboard the plastic rivets might be rotted. That means that the metal plate seperated from the membrane sheet and results in loss of tactility and crispness. A simple bolt mod will fix it

That sounds a lot like a posture problem rather than a problem with the ergodox layout. Could you describe how you used it? Maybe you can avoid that problem in the future. Maybe also post the matrix you used.
>>59158671
there is no good reason actually, even if it was good for one side it would be terrible for the other one, because the staggering only goes into one direction. A columnar hand oriented staggering may make sense, but your "normal" staggering sure doesn't.
i think most problems with the plank come from the fact that it is not split and that people don't take their time to adjust to it. Not being able to modify a textfile and write make into a terminal emulator sounds like a typical PEBCAC to me. There are gui tools for people like that available.

Do you game with browns?
>>
>>59177786
Browns are fine for gaming, the difference between them and reds is barely perceptible.
>>
>>59177796
Getting my ducky with browns tomorrow i hope i dont regret not getting blues

Yes, a lot. I think brown is ideal for that purpose while still being nice to type with. Blues are annoying when you're trying to hear quiet noises like footsteps, or are around other humans irl.

Any recommendations for keycap sets for a keyboard with a white plate? Most nice-looking sets are for black plates. Pic related.

Pic related is the production samples that she got sent from GMK the other day. The yellow is fine but she's getting the purple made much lighter.

Should be a nice looking set though.
>>
>>59175751
From the Input.Club switch comparison section:

"The Outemu Red switch is a relatively smooth linear switch, much firmer and with more total actuation force required than the Cherry MX Red switch. This makes the Outemu Red almost a lighter, less steep version of the Cherry MX Black switch."

If you search for 'input club switch guide' there are comparisons of all switches in terms of actuation weight, tactile weight, bottom-out weight and key travel distance.

Yeah i saw that. I am glad she is actually getting production samples since the colors are custom, in the old days that purple would have been used and everyone would be stuck with it. The yellow is great, that was the only color I was actually worried about.
>>59178458
Those look really nice, I love the shape of it.

I wonder why do you still believe in these overhyped mechanical keyboards?

I found a masterkeys pro L on ebay for €100 in my county, which is surprisingly low.

Any reason to avoid it? I've been out of the loop for a while and by the way it's going to be my first mechanical kb

Out of trying Cherry Blues, Reds and Browns I seem to prefer browns.

Would be nice but not a must.

>Previous/current keyboards
Loads of "meme" boards.
QPAD MK-80 (Blue switch), liked the pass through for USBs and audio but too big. Was expecting the switches to be more crisp.
QPAD MK-90 (Red Switch), Probably the most satisfying thing was bottoming out the reds and that was it. Gave it to my brother.
Corsair k65 (Reds) Bought for second hand, liked the smaller form factor but want it more compact.

Currently on a CM QuickFire TK with Browns, kind of wish I'd bought the stealth key caps version though.
Considering getting the Blue version just to try it. Love the switching between Numpad and arrow keys yet still having a compact design. Is this the only keyboard that has this design?

Never tried Cherry Greens or Clears and Grays. If I'm really liking browns so far would it be logical to?

>>59180316
Liking something makes you a shill, k.

I didn't even buy mine new, got it from some guy that had already imported it, but Evan sorted out the programming for me, seems pretty sound desu.. there are worse people in the community
>>
>>59180779
it doesn't get much worse than rama and zeal, especially because of the amount of shilling.

Artisan numpad with premium bezels, only 599¶

Here's another one, as you can see, it allows for very fast input. Perfect for gamers!

I don't know if it's shilling as much as blind fanboyism, either way it does get quite cringey.

Looking to buy my first mechanical keyboard:

>Budget
150 euros
>Location (continent at least)

i play vidya and type a lot, so a middleground is preferred, something like mx browns. I don't really care about them being loud or something.
>Layout
qwerty ansi
>Form factor
80%
>Backlight
depends on how much extra it will cost me, but I don't really need it

i currently use a steelseries apex 350 i got for my birthday because meme gaming keyboards

Reds are still louder then a rubber dome or chiclet so I'd say fuck your class m8s and bring a buckling spring keyboard instead.

I have fallen for the mechanical keyboard meme.

Bought a Cherry MX with red switches.

It doesn't feel much different than a standard Dell keyboard.

And on top of it, I type much faster on my Cherry XT with scissor switches.

This here doesn't feel more quality or anything.

Big disappointment.
