How did a Patek only sell for $6,000?

So the other day my speedy stopped while I was wearing it.

And today it's still stopped even though it's been in the winder all day.

Is it broken?

Few questions:
Is it too small at either 36mm or 37mm (sites vary the size) for 6 inch wrists

Is it a good start as a first auto

Even if it needs to be wound every 2 weeks I bet that would get old and annoying fast since it's going to sit in a display case and never be worn.

2) you should be able to go pre-owned for less, especially if you go vintage. This I've is listed at 145 for example

Firstly, on the wrist is mostly crown down so some of that may be positional variance. Secondly most mechanical movements will either gain or lose amplitude on the wrist compared to at rest and so will run faster or slower in wear than at rest.

Seagull are quite a modern factory, if you go to their factory tour they have clean rooms, people wear clean suits and they work an 8 hour day with lunches and breaks, it's all very European standard.

They produce ETA clones for the movements but don't spend any time regulating them.

They're like the chink seiko in terms of price, they do cheap stuff and expensive stuff. But not cheap bottom of the barrel stuff like Parnis and Alpha.

They seem to specialise in dress watches.

I'm not sure if they're overpriced, this is $250. Can you get something from anywhere else that looks like this for $250?

The Timezone Watch School is a simple, fun easy way to start http://www.timezonewatchschool.com/WatchSchool/ . You go through and take apart, and reassemble a movement, and it's all online. Another idea is this free online tutorial on the disassembly and assembly of a Seiko 7S26 movement http://www.clockmaker.com.au/diy_seiko_7s26/ . "Beginner Watchmaking: How to Build Your Very First Watch" by Tim A Swike, is an interesting book to pick up https://www.amazon.com/Beginner-Watchmaking-Build-First-Watch/dp/1456451650/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329496224&sr=1-1 . >>
Chinese watches are weird. With Seagull they are actually made by a company called "Seagull" in a "Seagull" factory. But other watchbrands have weird shit.

For example you can go to a chinese watch factory and say "I'll take 500 watches with Seagull or Miyota movements and have them branded as "hard anal sex"" and then the factory will produce 500 "hard anal sex" watches for you.

So brand names don't really seem to mean anything. There's a brand called "Parnis" which doesn't really exist, people are just going to factories and saying "Parnis watches please". The reason people keep doing it is that now "Parnis" has brand recognition.

The watchuseek forum has even been able to take advantage of this and now there are several "watchuseek" brand watches out there.

I hated it at first. I've come around some time ago, and seeing one in the flesh sealed the deal.
It's all about finishing and execution, and the shapes showcase that work really well. They're incredibly well made steel sports watches, and that's really cool.
I'm not that big on the precious metal ones, but some of them are alright.
Of course I can't afford one. And diregarding price, I probably wouldn't wear one as it's not the style of watch I like. But I have a lot of respect for the Royal Oak.
Fuck the Offshore though

The general public must think so because Omega offer an automatic AND manual wind speedmaster, and they're not withdrawn their original manual wind model.

Is there an e-tailer that sells individual watch parts like this with relative ease? I pick out the case with crystal, band, face, and a generic movement, and assemble it I mean.

I say probably quartz movement because I can't imagine a movement being shipped OEM to a consumer to tune and time accurately. I assume quartz under the auspice that the average person could pop some hands on the axis and push the crown in and off it goes.

I don't know if what you're asking for exists. There's certainly the ability to get an entire watch custom built for you in China to your specs.

The watchuseek forum does it frequently. But it's like 200 pieces minimum.

Yeah I didn't think so. Perhaps if anyone entrepreneurial were to make it happen, Lego for watches could be a huge market.

Imagine a couple dozen cases, but of standardized sizing to accept quartz and even automatic movements
>This 38mm titanium case with sapphire crystal will accept type D, and type E movements
>Type E movement is automatic with 23 jewels
>this crown will only work with Type E movements
>This case will accept Type 4-7 faces
>type 6 face has a luminescence glow with stainless indices
>watch bands are standard industry widths
Type 9 Roman wide hands 24k plated.

Your order for these parts comes to $147.83. $40 additional fee to have it assembled by our expert watch technicians.

Lego for watches could be huge, but it would require a lot of overhead and some serious craftsmanship knowledge to produce that many different styles and have them all work together.

I don't think normies care that much about watches and the money is in the normie market.

It's a lot easier to TELL people what they want then for them to tell you what they want.

There's no need to create a company that do this when you can be Daniel Wellington and charge $200 for a $10 quartz shitter.

So many chronographs have crazy colored hands that have no sense to them at all.

One of the things Seiko tends to do right [on their high-end] chronographs is hand colors. They'll often color all running hands one way, and all chronograph hands another way. Their lower end chrongraphs they'll go back to having dumb shit like all subdials one color, different color maybe fore all center hands or something.

So a while ago I posted this teaser pic of a rather rare dial variant of the Seiko LM Special.

As far as I can tell, Seiko only used a blue sunburst dial with classic baton indices and classic dauphine hands in a single case style, and not a very popular case style for the 5206 at that.

Well, it finally arrived today.

And here it is, in all of its pre-Swatch glory.

Dial is absolutely immaculate. Hands just need an ultrasonic cleaning.

I also have a 5206-6061 case I can move this dial into (I can always swap the dials back to their original cases if I ever want to sell them).
>>
>>59058218

*Pre-serviced holy fuck I phone post about vintage Omega so much my phone autocorrected pre-serviced to pre-Swatch.
>>
>>59058214
That wouldn't make much sense. At 119k nearly all the damage is done. Wear parts are nearly all worn to the point where it all needs to be replaced, there may be warping in aluminum blocks and stress in iron blocks that can lead to future head gasket problems. It's not like "as long as I change my oil before it breaks down it's like I'm changing my oil on time."

You have a completely trashed car and you want to pay the price of a new car (which could last 120k) to keep this one on the road for another 12k miles before it shits the bed?

Anything mechanical has a "break-in" period. As the metal parts start rubbing together, the friction changes, and so does the performance. Higher end watches pretty much bypass the breakin by "stoning" the metal parts to a polish, and using the sapphire or ruby jewels which have a very low friction on metal parts.

Large watches of 40mm and bigger is just the current "style". 34mm with an appropriate band and clothing is fine.

who's a big boy? :^)

This is (apparently) a 6.75" wrist with the 34mm carrera reissue. Tag says it's 36mm in diameter but that includes the crown. So 34mm should be fine with a ~7" wrist.

Actually, now that I look it might be 35mm without the crown:

thanks.

Personally, I think ~35mm is a sweet spot for usable, masculine, and stylish. 40mm and bigger is just clownish big no matter how big or small your wrists are.

my wrist is so skinny that I obsess over a few millimeters so no one will think my watch looks 'clownish' (you know how clowns are known for wearing oversized wristwatches?)

clapping is such a mundane activity that it should count. do your watches also break when you wave at someone.

the 1963 is also supposed to be a pilots watch. how the fuck can it not withstand some gforce and sharp movements
