If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

>Arch Linux doesn't provide anything special. People often claim it's "customizable", but it's no more customizable than Ubuntu itself. The community is also very unwelcoming to people who want to customize it beyond what the devs intended.

>There's claims of it being "lightweight", but a debian netinstall is smaller than a base Arch Linux installation. This is mostly due to Arch Linux including development headers in all their packages, which is completely unneeded for a binary package distribution.

Please avoid using the term “google” as a verb, meaning to search for something on the internet. “Google” is just the name of one particular search engine among others. We suggest to use the term “search the web” or (in some contexts) just “search”. Try to use a search engine that respects your privacy.

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

google as verb means to use google to search something over the internet. People use this term because google is simply the best and most diffuse search engine.
This term is also an accepted neologism (i.e. not considered a grammar error):

hi newfriend, let me bring you up to speed
Arch users are usually arrogant pricks that like to boast how they're better than everybody
if you've been here for the past couple of years, you'd know how fucking annoying they can get
most of them pretend to be superior while in reality they're just as incomptent as the rest us
/g/'s had it with their bullshit
because they think they're so much better than everyone, Arch users get no mercy for their mistakes
a vocal and very obnoxious part of their community brought this upon all of them

>>
>>59006502
nah, that was mostly random shitposting and/or trolling, not necessarily from actual arch users, akin to those anons posting about black guys fucking white girls or general "white shaming" on /tv/.
About /g/, you could say the same about anyone, from "wintards" to gentoo users or anti- or pro- systemd fags or linux users in general.

The reality is just that there are a lot obnoxious, trolls or just ignorant people on 4chan. Not realizing that is an error because you risk falling in the same ignorance and becoming a shitposter/troll yourself. Try to make this place a little better instead of lowering yourself to their level.

I have a small laptop with a 128gb SSD and Win10 on it. I'm looking for a small/lightweight linux distro to put on it for some linux-specific development. Any suggestions?
>>
>>59003623

I have an ultrabook that I'm currently using for work, however having to travel a lot I constantly find Windows burning through my battery even with power settings setup correctly, eco mode enabled, you name it I've tried it. I get a solid six hours but I need more for international travel and times when I simply do not have access to an outlet.

Is there a distro that I can install a very basic set of utilities on such as a browser, a basic TeX setup/document editor suite with maximising battery life in mind? For anything more intensive I would boot into my Windows partition.

I was considering getting Remix, but I'm unsure if this is the right place to ask questions about that considering it's android. Perhaps Haiku or Puppy? I know very little about *nix outside of Lubuntu/AWS so forgive my ignorance.

yes you do, because any software can be installed on any distributions. About the lightweight, distributions usually doesn't take too many space on your disk. If you care about bloat, avoid the DE like ubuntu, kde and gnome and use something like xfce.

if you still need a recommendation, you can install a *buntu distribution (probably xubuntu or lubuntu), debian, arch, gentoo... I think you can get fedora without gnome too.

When I heard that Richard Stallman was involved with communism I refused to believe it. He was just an innocent young child who never grew old, Free As In Freedom man. So I was told. He sacrificed everything, so I was led to believe, but who is the real Richard Stallman?

I decided to find out, by first investigating the charge that he was a communist. I felt this was just a hollow troll, but then I looked into his contacts in places like Latin America, Viet Nam, Cuba, and even the Peoples Republic of China. Did you know that even the secretive North Koreans use Linux? Was Stallman involved in this too?

Additional to his clear links to world 'socialism' are his odd personal habits and quirks. What's he up to? Why does he do what he does? Nobody seems to know, he is as enigmatic as Tom Bombadil and that's, apparently, the way he likes it.

What's his end game /g/?

1. Use browser addons for security, privacy, browsing experience, etc.
2. Don't save your password on a plaintext on your computer, create and remember one good main password and let a password manager like KeePassX that has autocomplete generate the rest.
3. Buy a router compatible with OpenWrt and install OpenWrt.

pretty fun install tbqh (lilo is pretty cool), would recommend

centos/rhel/suse & various BSDs have been my goto distros for like 5 years now, so slackware a cool change of pace. I'm enjoying the package management aspect the most so far.

Too bad I had to install it on a piece of shit 2007 toshiba laptop since that's the only computer i had left to fuck around with.

Considering maybe switching one of my two work laptops over to slackware next year just for shits, any significant drawbacks? Currently FreeBSD on one and CentOS on the other. Probably would end up being the FreeBSD one that gets switched.

I've never done scripting before for anything. What I do is fairly regularly got to my samba share and run

ls -R > directory.txt

for each of the folders on my NAS so I have a directory listing of all the stuff on my share, in case I ever someone lose it all + backups I at least know what I lost. I have to do this 5 times for 5 different directories.

Anyway how would I go about automating all this into one single action? I figure it's scripting but I don't even know how to start. I'd like to take the output .txt files and compress them all into one file too.

Posted to this to another thread, but figured I could get interesting opinions here as well. What are your guys thoughts on M$'s efforts towards building and improving WSL? Is this another Microsoft EEE scheme or are they actually being good this time around?

Gotta say I'm really impressed with the work their WSL team has been putting into it, lots of stuff getting fixed pretty quick.

And yes, I wasted a RHEL subscription on this but I can keep deploying that rootfs or docker container and the subscription doesn't get revoked by Red Hat like it should, and I can spin up as many docker instances alongside of this all using the same subscription in parallel.

I'm getting native performance on that KDE environment and the applications running on it, by the way. Console is skewed because of weird screen resolution though but haven't run into actual problems.

Thoughts?

I'd imagine if EEE were to happen it would be something along the lines of WSL restricted features not being contributed back into open source, or pricing out advanced features of some kind (for example being able to execute windows binaries in the linux subsystem).

It's like Gentoo, only better because you get to """"cast"""" """"spells"""" from """"grimoires"""".

https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=sourcemage
>Sourcemage is a source-based GNU/Linux distribution based on a Sorcery metaphor of 'casting' and 'dispelling' programs, which we refer to as 'spells'.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Mage
>Source Mage's tagline is “Linux so advanced, it may as well be magic”, and its commands have a “sorcerous theme”. Each package is called a “spell”, and its package management program is called “sorcery”. To install a package the user must “cast” that spell. Casting a spell consists of downloading the source code (if it is not already downloaded), checking for dependencies, casting them if necessary, compiling the program, and installing it. A set of available spells is called a “grimoire”. To uninstall a package the user must “dispel” the spell.

Here's a little history if you're interested.

https://lwn.net/Articles/145233/
>In 2001, Kyle Sallee created a source-based linux distribution called Sorcerer GNU/Linux and released it under the GPL. In late 2001 due to differences with Kyle on how to run the project, a fork was created called Lunar Penguin, now known as Lunar Linux. As a result of confrontations with the Lunar developers, Kyle took Sorcerer off the web one night and nobody could update.
>Many of the developers tried to talk Kyle back into continuing the project, but failed. Ryan Abrams and Eric Schabell took over the GPL'd sources and put up a temporary website. At the request of Kyle, the name was changed, and after a vote, Source Mage GNU/Linux was born. On April 4, 2002, sourcemage.org was registered and website content was put up.
>A short while later Kyle rewrote much of his code and released it under a non-GPL license that prevents forking. These three distributions have continued since, however the rest of this article concerns Source Mage.

http://sourcemage.org/History
>Development now continues on 3 separate distros with three distinct goals:
> - Lunar-Linux aims to produce a stable, solid, source-based distro using well-tested software versions.
> - Sorcerer's aims are unclear at this time, but apparently will create a non-free source-based Linux distro to suit Kyle's vision.
> - Source Mage is working to continue rapid development of the sorcery tools and create a 100% free source-based GNU/Linux distro that allows users the maximum amount of freedom and choice possible.

The wikipedia article says that the initial release of Sorcerer GNU/Linux was in 2007, which is obviously wrong.
Although the rest of the article seems legit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorcerer_(Linux_distribution)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Mage

Sorcerer appears to be both non-free and non-existent at present time and nobody gives a shit about Lunar Linux (latest release was in 2014).

How much work should I be expecting for installing Arch with Gnome?
>>
So weird issue I'm running into with a friend.
Walked him through installing Arch, the only real difference in our setups is that he's using nvidia for graphics whereas I'm running intel.

While trying to get multihead support working properly (wasn't using his primary monitor as the primary monitor, but otherwise Plasma was booting fine) a typo was made to xorg.conf. This rendered it unbootable for him. It would visibly hang on Cleaning Blocks, when he removed quiet from GRUB it'd reach the target graphical user interface and then hang.

So my first instinct was to have him chroot and remove the xorg.conf and nvidia settings, which he did. Reinstall the nvidia drivers, which he did, and blacklist his igpu drivers, which he also did (along with nouveau for good measure).

All of this still renders the same results, failing to launch his graphical user shit.

Am I missing something with nvidia setups?

net install, minimal.

debian has an installer, packages are binary. It's very simple to use and has more of a focus on free software.

arch and gentoo, the installer is you. greater focus on customisation. requires a more hands on approach to managing them.

there's nothing you can do in gentoo/arch you can't do in Debian though.

Can writing to the EFI partition brick a laptop?

I got an UEFI laptop and wanted to dualboot, steps:
- disabled secureboot
- booted from live-
- installed system to extra partition-
- Do you want to install GRUB? Yes
- Do you want to enable EFI boot? Yes
- Mount EFI partition as /boot as requested
- System installs everything goes fine
- Reboot

Now it hangs on the vendor logo. Nothing works: with/without USB, Escape (normally menu), F10 (normally BIOS), F9 (normally boot order)...

if you actually fucked your firmware, then it won't be easy but might be possible.

First make sure it's fucked:remove any driver (internal hdd included) and try again to boot from usb.

Second check if your mobo has some kind of recovery feature: some products allows you to enter in an "emergency" mode which will allow you to load a firmware to flash via sftp protocol.

Finally, as last stand, find a jtag, open your laptop, connect the jtag to the firmware EEPROM, find a suitable firmware for your mobo (i.e. the one provided by the manufacturer), and try to flash it.

I'm trying to get youtube-dl to place the files it downloads into a certain folder. I'm using a bash script which has a cd to a caching folder, and then it gets further processing. Let's call this folder "ytdl".

When I leave out the cd, it plops the file next to the script youtubefile.mp4.part while downloading, just a .mp4 when done.

When I add a cd, the program still works , but I can't find the .part or the .mp4 in the ytdl folder.Even worse, I can't find it anywhere.

How can I fix this, or where is can I find these files in limbo?

1) use absolute paths to prevent headaches, the youtube-dl's option "-o" will let you choose a destination folder

2) to find the file:

Gentoo has been around a lot longer, has a better community and generally is the better choice when it comes to source-based GNU/Linux distributions.

care to elaborate? I used that to learn a lot when I was starting out with GNU/Linux and found it very helpful, but of course I was a beginner so wouldn't have noticed if there was something wrong with it

Can anyone tell me why every click I do within my OS takes a few seconds to register?

What's the verdict on the CK patchset? I know it's probably autistic placebo, but I run it anyway.

It is more responsive then the vanilla kernel.
Its also a realtime kernel and having realtime access is good for video/audio

Everytime I want to run my code I have to navigate slowly through a long filetree to reach the file I'm after, meanwhile on Windows I can easily reach commonly used maps. Is there a fast way to navigate to commonly used maps on Linux aswell using the terminal?

>Linux-ck is a package available both in AUR and in the unofficial repo-ck repository that allows users to run a kernel and headers setup patched with Con Kolivas' ck patchset, including MuQSS (Multiple Queue Skiplist Scheduler, pronounced mux) which replaces Brain Fuck Scheduler (BFS), his previous work. Many Arch Linux users choose this kernel for its excellent desktop interactivity and responsiveness under any load situation.

>Ck patchset is designed for desktop/laptop use but not for servers. It provides low latency environment and works well for 16 CPUs or less.

If you are interested in KDE it's definitely the way to go.

Otherwise there are better distros
>>

I find best to install a distro that isn't centered around a specific DE.

Something like Arch, or Gentoo, or a minimal install of Debian or Fedora.

both have a green logo, so you cannot go wrong with opensuse.

Might be.

Does KDE neon use opensuse patches for KDE integration? Like Firefox?
>>
>>59019308
I'm sure it does. If kubuntu does it so does kde neon.
>>
>>59019218
Actually, i love KDE.
It's the rolling release (tumbleweed) usable? Or is it safer to go with the regular release (leap)?
I'm gonna put this on my pc.

You can _download_ windows for free from Microsoft.

Activating it is a different story. Sites like youpass.com will sell you win10pro keys for next to nothing if you pretend to be french enough.

I wanted very badly to make the switch to ubuntu, but there are no drivers for my wirelessnetwork adapter (WNA3100 from netgear) and every installation guide instructs you to use the console to download things from the internet, but I cannot because the wireless adapter simply doesnt work, I've tried to use ndiswrapper and wine to no avail. about twenty minutes probably. Provided you know basic stuff like how partitions work. If you don't know that stuff, use google, and you'll be finished with an easy install like mint, debian or ubuntu in under an hour.

Hey /fglt/, retard here

I've used ubuntu a fair a bit, I got pretty used to it and I liked it, I was using xubuntu, and I liked XFCE, also played around with OpenBox on it

But I've been wanting to install something on my desktop, And I'd like to have it as c o m f y and stable as possible. As Neet-ish as it sounds, I like fucking around with my distro, but I dont like _fixing it_

I don't do too much on it either, Just web-browsing / music for the most part. Should I stick with (x)ubuntu or should I try something new, if so suggest me something.
>>
Tried Xubuntu here, didn't quite like it since I felt like I had to work around a lot of stuff to get the GUI I wanted. Thinking of moving onto something like Debian or Antergos.

What would you guys recommend? What's the difference between dpkg and pacman?
