my gut tells me go for the Spadger since it'll be the safer bet.

but listening to this video by Zeos has me wowed, the vocals are so fucking clear, and the bass is tight.

K612 imo is AKG's best midrange headphone
Go for it unless you can find a used HD600/580 for cheap.

All have flaws, or are pretty shit.

Zeos ONLY for build/comfort/other misc shit
Metal571 for sound.

looking to switch from a pair of rha750s to closed back, thinking of m50x but not sure budget is 150$ (little more or less), any suggestions?
>>
>>58982403
Depends on your preference. In my opinion, no. I like the 600's better for their more throaty forward upper mids, and less recessed highs.

Either way, the differences are minimal, and an EQ can replicate the other. Just get whatever is cheaper and EQ. Chances are unless you compare them you won't really care.
>>
>>58982412
Go for 770's if you want V-shape. M50x are just worse all around other than portability, and slightly more 'flatness' in the midrange.
>>
>>58981860
>K612
Like the K601 before it, this is AKG's most neutral reference headphone. Arguably their best headphone. Fairly insensitive, much more so than the umpteenth rebrand of the FA-003.
>safe
Other that the price delta, I seem to be missing out on the "risk".

>>58981980
Do you people really pay attention to youtube reviewers?
I thought that was just some sort of running joke.
>>
>>58982450
well im not looking for specifically v shape, but something a little more colored than just flat, specifically for industrial, metal would m50x be bad?
>>
>>58982519
DT 770's are not as V shaped as people do suggest.
Sure when compared to /g/'s favorites like hd600, hd558, m40x k701 and what not they are V shaped, but in the spectrum of normal headphones these could go for "A little more colored than flat".

I usually recommend the k612 for people who are after a rather neutral sounding headphone, given that they have an amp that puts out enough power. As >>58982473 said, they are rather insensitive, and I'd suggest driving them with an amp like the E09K or one that has a similar power output.

>the vocals are so fucking clear, and the bass is tight
I usually tell people to take those sound demos with a grain of salt, but yea, the k612 has a nice midrange and tight bass (this is basically the brand's sound signature)

Reminder to never recommend K550, K551, K553, K545 etc.

But if you are still there and want a warm sounding closed back headphone check out the NVX XPT100. Beyerdynamic DT770 would do what the K5xx-series headphones try to: a V-shape but thanks to the much better pads the DT770 don't usually leak and actually have bass.

>>
How would a DAC/amp work if I have something like a BoomPro for the mic? Would I have to plug the headphone on it's own on it, and then try to route the mic cable to my onboard input? Is there any alternative where I can use both? How is the Scarlett as a DAC? I've read that it's not great as an amp, but that doesn't really bother me. All I want is a single thing to plug in both the headphones and mic that also serves as a DAC.
>>
I pulled the trigger on the SR-80e, reviews online from both users and review sites are glowing with the only complaint being that they're somewhat uncomfortable and that the sound isn't very delicate.
I like that they're actually properly made in America and not China. Hopefully they'll be here in a week or two.

I'm here. Thanks for your suggestion, but I decided I'll go with the sheepskin pads: they give a higher quality feel because, again, being a gift I'm leaning more towards the build quality.
>>
>>58983925
Argons? Yes and no. Sub-bass isn't too amazing, but everything else is really quite detailed. They really make up the sub bass by having great sound-stage and fucking phenomenal imaging. For $250 theyre pretty decent.

If you want better sub-bass check DT770's. Not as smooth sounding, and highs can be quite sibilant if you're sensitive. If you've got more than $250, check the Fostex THX00's. Improvement over the 770's all around, other than isolation.

>>
Alright here's some headphones I'm looking at.. which one would be the best?

Phillips SHP 1900

Probably the Stereo Beats.
They're not overpriced for the specific sound signature that they are able to produce. It's very unique, and something the KOSS and Philips can't recreate.
>>
>>58987300
They're not bass heavy in the stereotypical sense.
Midbass emphasis in audiophile language might be called thick, hazy, cloudy, or whatever.
The point being that the midbass is a real clarity killer, part of the so-called "Sennheiser Veil".

Going into the other direction and killing all the midbass isn't a good idea either.
>>
What does /hpg/ think of SHP 1900? Those large bulky headphones which cover your entire ear.

Why do so many higher end iems use that over-the-ear design. I can't stand wearing my iems like that. It's why I got these because I had a difficult time finding something that I could wear with the cable straight down.
>>
>>58986755
It's not anywhere as handy as the fulla2 with its huge knob, usb power and aux input/outputs.

Also, specs:
https://www.audiobot9000.com/schiit/a/fulla-2
https://www.audiobot9000.com/nuforce/a/dac-9-192k (couldn't find the udac3, but the official specs aren't so great either.)

Wearing the cable around the ear has many advantages. Maybe it's uncomfortable, but it's just better: if the cable gets pulled the IEM will stay in place, but most importantly it eliminates all the microphonics, meaning a flawless listening.
>>
>>58988023
No but I had the takstar 250 a while back and they sounded great for the money, great build quality too.
>>
>>58988700

>>
>>58988700
>>58988726
>microphonics
That's not what that is called. It's just cable noise.
Microphonics refers to behaving like a microphone, vibration being turned into electrical signal.

>>58983272
I use them.
Balanced armature have their own advantages and disadvantages. The sound that you get out of them isn't particularly distinctive; transducer principle doesn't determine the sound.

>>58983579
It's an irrelevant parameter either way.
>>
>>58988785
>Microphonics refers to behaving like a microphone, vibration being turned into electrical signal.
A little curious now, where does this happen? What's a real world scenario where microphonics is a problem and what can be done to reduce it?
>>
>>58988785
>Microphonics refers to behaving like a microphone, vibration being turned into electrical signal.
The only way I can think of this happening, is some sort of piezoelectric effect inside the cable/headphone, or some induced current. Both cases seem kinda unlikely to happen when we talk about a IEM.

At any rate, I've always seen "microphonics" used referring to the mechanical vibrations that can reach the ear of the user conducted through the cable of the headphone/IEM

I'm assuming, as that's highly likely, that you don't have a dedicated amp (or a nice amp+dac device).

But even if you did, these headphones are relatively neutral, which can be hard to adjust if coming from non-neutral headphones.

It took me over a week, but I've loved them since.

Be patient with them, use them exclusively; Don't mix in other headphones, or your brain will never get used to the signature. Don't drive the volume high to try and compensate for the different signature.
>>

He's implying that excessive upper bass and lower mids response could be a result of not using an amp with the headphones.
>>
>>58989081
Well that just doesn't make sense in any way I can think of.
>>
>>58988820
>A little curious now, where does this happen?
Vacuum tubes. Electrical properties dependent on electrode spacing, vibration modifies properties, can dump distortions and incoherent noise into signal.
>what can be done to reduce it?
Brace and stiffen device, damp and decouple boards and plate, and minimize influence of undesirable properties in the final result.

>>58988894
>I've always seen "microphonics" used
Yes, words are defined by how they are used (like damp and dampen).
It already refers to something else in a somewhat similar context, so I would avoid it.

>>58988979
It doesn't modify the transfer function just like that.
Retains the issue whether attached to low-Zout or high Zout device, the higher Zout just makes even worse than it already was.

Yes. Anything with "gaming" in the name is shit. Pure marketing coated plastic, especially when we talk about headphones/headsets.

>I know Logitech products are shit but I thought I'd ask if anyone had experience..
Logitech doesn't make shit products, it's just that all the headset are shit.

The G533 costs $150. For $30 you can have a V-Moda BoomPro to attach to the headphones of your choice (as long as they have a detachable cable with a standard jack. The Philips SHP9500 cost $70, the Audio Technica ATH-M40x cost $80, just to name an open and a closed pair of cans. This combo is as good as any headset can get. For $50 less you can have something infinitely better than the G533.

If you want to go and be really fancy about your headset you can buy a pair of Koss Pro4AA and then get a Shure SM10A.

Somewhat but not necessarily normal or exclusive to Logitech. The mic quality so terribly varying and bad on a lot of headsets that Youtube review where you hear the mic being used for test purposes are actually a good way to hear them before buying. Hardwarecanucks and I remember seeing Tek Syndicate doing some example videos on the mic quality on headsets.

I need a work headset, so audiophile issues aren't a big deal.

I would prefer three things:

Behind the head design
Protruding microphone
Wireless

To my amazement, only one headset has ever been made that meets these simple criteria - the Logitech H760, and Logitech discontinued them a few years ago because they had a microphone defect.

Does anyone else know of any headsets like this? It's irritating me that 65,000 different wired models exist in this exact design but wireless ones always have that above-the-head band instead. There's also a million wireless behind-the-head headphones that either have no microphone, or for some bizarre reason only have a tinny invisible mic that only functions while the audio is in mono mode.

Please help!

Isolation is decent, not on HD280 level, but if I've got my AC going I can't hear it through the cans. I'd say they're good for public use, at least in an office setting (where I plan to use them).

They're pretty chunky, not anymore than other full sized.
The cups themselves aren't round, just the outside rings, and they're big enough to go around my huge ears.
One of the few sets I've tried that are deep enough that my ears don't touch the drivers too.

I own a pair of Sennheiser 598s at home, and they are amazing when I drive them with my Schiit Modi 2 > Schiit Vali 2. I really love the sound they produce, the soundstage is amazing, they're lightly toasted, the highs aren't bright at all... basically I can turn them up and hear the bass, the kick, guitar, and vocals, and can hear them all. I don't have to lower the volume because the highs are so painful that I *have* to keep the volume low, as I do with my current work headset, a pair of AKG K553 Pros. I also own a pair of Philips Fidelio X2 IEMs which I like, but they're obviously not as good as my home setup.

Need headphones under 100$.

Would prefer something with simulated surround sound.

Not turtle Beach.

Use: almost strictly for rainbow six siege. Open soundstage might be better. Hearing footsteps and which direction they're coming from is important.

Would prefer with a mic but I can also just buy a modmic.

My ATH-M50X's sound pretty good for the game but

>I can kinda respect unbranded,
Personally I don't. Status Audio uses this unbranded thing as leverage with their marketing but it's just a PR stunt; it doesn't add anything to the product in itself. Their main argument is that *certain brands* (looking at you Beats) spend a lot on marketing and advertising, which drives up the final price without improving the quality of the product, which is an opinion that I share, but this doesn't necessary imply that you don't have to put your brand on your product.

The difference in price is not accomplished by the lack of logo on your products, but by cutting down on the build quality. And this is something they don't tell you.

Their slogan is "No logo, no celebrities, just sound" This is clearly bullshit: if they were actually honest, and they cut through the bullshit like they pretend to do, their marketing would look something like "No high quality materials, no structural strenght, just sound".

They may deliver great sound for the price point, but the overall quality is mediocre at best (go ahead and look for the QA issues Status Audio have), especially considering there are branded headphones that cost almost the same, deliver equally good (if not better) audio, and are way more solidly built.

For instance:
>OB-1
>$79.00
>SHP9500
>$69.80

>but what's with the big gold rings
Being unbranded doesn't mean not trying to have an appealing design
>oversized round cups
You have to accomodate a human ear: they're called circumaural for a reason, you know.

Does Shure have different build quality for different markets?

I found se215 cheap on an Internet auction, but they ship "from abroad".

Assuming they are genuine (the guy wouldn't break the law this obviously), it might be the same thing with cheap Dualshocks - Sony has factories in China for the Asian market that cut corners and the controllers made there are subpar.

So does Shure do something similar or is the lower price simply a result of cutting out the middleman?

I take the plane quite often (and my institute only get me economy tickets) and I search a solution to these problems
>Engine noise so loud I can't hear anything on the shitty on-seat tv.
>a baby starts crying and there's a nuclear fission of crying babbies all around.

I was considering some noise cancellation headphones but I am worry about the battery.
Do headphones usually continue working (with no active cancellation) when the battery is dead?
At constant price (let's say around $250), do noise cancellation beat noise isolation?

No way. You must mean Ear Speakers.

ANC is stupidly expensive. Yes the headphones keep functioning when the battery is dead, if they're not wireless obviously, in which case you'll have to connect them to your phone like a normal pair of headphones; without ANC turned on the headphones usually lose audio quality.

With IEM, specifically with Etymotic Research IEMs, you lose the comfort of a circumaural headphone for a pair of ear dildos, that might be uncomfortable for you, but deliver the best sound you can imagine (just don't expect the bass to shake your eyeballs) with insane sound isolation. I own a pair of Etymotic Research hf5, I love them, and wear them easily, even for hours, although they will make your ear canal sweaty, and you'll feel the need to remove them eventually (pretty much like any IEM, just a bit worse); once at work the alarm went off, and I was just under the siren (my ears literally hurt for the sound intensity): I put my hf5 on and the sound was audible, but bearable, so I played some music at normal levels of listening (not even half of the output of my smartphone), and I swear to god the siren sound was completely covered.

To wrap it up
>ANC
>Bose Quiet Comfort
Pros
>comfortable
>feels like sorcery
>sound good
>look cool
Cons
>when the battery runs out the magic stops
>stupidly expensive
>not completely portable

Etymotic Research
Pro
>cheaper than ANC (depending on the model)
>specifically designed to isolate as much as physically possible (and they deliver)
>best sound you can get out of an IEM
>no battery limited
>more portable than full sized headphones
Cons
>you might not be able to wear them properly or get a proper sealing
>they'll get uncomfortable eventually
>you have to wear them with the cable around your ear making you look a bit weird otherwise the cable will transmit a shitload of noise

I'm going to bed now, I'll try to answer tomorrow if you have any further questions.

Are there any decent headphones for 80CAD?
I've always had IEMs for the portability but now I think I want to switch to real headphones cause I want good sound isolation and comfort for listening to music while studying. Things like sennheiser 558, 598 at $200 is too much for me
Also I'm not sure what closed/open, on ear, full sized, etc. is. All this vocabulary is vague for me. What do I need for better sound isolation? I study in a pretty noisy environment that's why. Is my budget too low for what I'm looking for?

Also my ears are pretty big ! And they would start hurting when squeezed by a pair of cheap headphones I had
>>
How do the X2 compare to the DT990 sonically?
>>
>>58996929
more bass, less highs, more soundstage.
>>
Complys are so fucking good and make my IEMs sound great but having to reinsert them is a god damn pain in the ass.
Having to wait for them to cool down is the biggest issue.
>>
>>58996799
You could try Comply or Sony Hybrid tips if you want more isolation and comfort.
They fit on your IEMs and give you both.
Of course if your IEMs are worth like 20 bucks it's not worth investing $20 on Complys. Only worth it above $100 IEMs desu senpai
You definitely want closed, but I don't think raw isolation and comfort go hand in hand. I have a pair of HD 7 DJ that clamp like a motherfucker and block a ton of noise but make my head hurt after an hour. Great for commutes. I also have a pair of Momentum 2 that rest gently against my ear and are so comfy I can wear them all day but isolation isn't great.

It's the highs in the 990's that are fatiguing. The v shape is really heavy, especially in the highs, and if your ears are treble sensitive you won't like them.

Ignore the brand autist, polk is fine for a simple 2.1 setup. You are making a 2.1 setup, right? 5.1?

Anyway, more important than the sub brand is how you utilize it. Make sure that you match the crossover so that you don't bleed into the low end of your speakers.

Thoughts on ATH-M20x for a broke student looking for a pair of study headphones i.e. good isolation ?

Also it says on AT's website "mastering headphones" for tracking and mixing. I don't get it. I'm not a sound engineer, I just want headphones to casually listen to music, why do people advise these if they're for mastering?

Uncomfortable and muddy sound.

>good isolation ?
Decent. About as good as any closed back

>I just want headphones to casually listen to music, why do people advise these if they're for mastering?
It's just dumb marketing. Mastering really just means its a balanced/flat sound. [which the M20x certainly arent]
Normal people would rather buy a product that is supposedly intended for professionals. It means almost nothing in practice.
>>
>>58998128
I think it would, I haven't heard too many good things about a lot of subwoofers cheaper than it. I've even heard some people say that anything cheaper than a bic f12 isn't worth it, but I'm not sure about that.
>>58998140
I think they're pretty good for the money I paid for them, but I got mine for only $25. The isolation is alright, noting too outstanding. From what I can hear, they didn't have a lot of low end, and don't seem to have a very good high end either, but for the $25 I paid for them, I think they're better than the similarly priced monoprice 8323's. The comfort on them is alright.

Too early
Especially with competing standards like AAC on Apple and APTX on Android.
If you buy a pair of Momentum 2 Wireless in current year they will sound good on your android but play like shit on your iOS device because we need multiple ways to do the same fucking thing because fuck you.
We need either a standard or have headphone makers implement both in a single pair of headphones. Probably not gonna happen seeing that nobody bothered with inline controls that work in both Android and iOS except for a few chink companies.

Here's the thing: those IEM do have bass, you can hear it, you can appreciate it a lot, but it's very tight and controlled, since the sound is produced by a balanced armor driver, and when it comes to low range, their ability to move lots of air is fairly limited, meaning you won't get that guttural feeling that a powerful bass can give you compared to let's say a pair of Philips Fidelio X2. After all we're talking about something so small that can be stuck in your ear. Also, it's very important to get a proper seal with the tips, because otherwise you will not be able to even hear anything from the low end of the sonic spectrum. Speaking of which, you have a very different selection of tips (and you can even buy some good quality after market tips), which have the chance to accommodate your ear canal shape; different shape make the hf5 sound different: silicone tips have a the more refined sound, foam tips make everything audibly warmer.

I bought the hf5 mainly because their ability to isolate, and initially I didn't enjoy the sound signature, being used to the fun V-shape of my X2, but with time I learned to appreciate the level of detail they provide; on the other hand I always loved the insane isolation they provide. Just a word of advice: be extremely careful with these on if you're walking down the street and you have to let's say cross a road, since you won't be able to hear literally anything from the outside, I'm not kidding, and you'll have to rely completely on your sight. These are not like any other IEM you may have tried.

Yes, there is a version with an inline remote, they're called hf3 IIRC. They cost more obviously.

>Is there a version of the HF5 with an inline remote?
HF2 and HF3. Don't recall which is which.
>the 'nobass' thing
When I consider the situation, several possibilities emerge:
-people are incompetent at putting on eartips for optimal fit
-people want a substantial bass boost in their earphones
The latter could be true, but I know the former is true. HF5 "actual" tonality is sort of like HD 650, a bit more rolled off at the top end, but midbassy and slightly dark as well.

Pare down the list based on size/form factor and sound signature. Even you don't get signature (which is both more and less important than you think it is)m you at least look at the headphone and see if it sits.
