Too much user information is being logged. Not enough communications and stored data are being properly encrypted. Technical infrastructure like backups are poor or non-existent on some trackers. User activity is being leaked to sites that absolutely should not have that kind of information. Tons of small security improvements or new technologies that take a little effort to enable aren't being enabled, and that says a lot about the value that staff places on security. Most of this is verifiable by any user, and some are assumption based on other trends. I don't want to muddle up this post with technical details, but I've created short write-ups about some particular problems in the past and have talked at length with people about them. I can explain some of them in other posts, but they aren't the point of this one.

Demand that your security and privacy be protected by the sites you use. The staff of your favorite sites needs to know that these things are important to you past a degree of just passively assuming that you are adequately protected. Let staff know that you care about this, and encourage them to put additional time and effort into it. Most of them will assume they are already doing enough if they don't hear otherwise from you.

And now to staff.

Fix your goddamn shit. Why are so many of you embedding resources from unaffiliated third parties in a way that gives that party knowledge of who just loaded your page and what they were looking at? I can be browsing a book on Bibliotik, and whoops, that cover image was hosted on Amazon, which I happened to be logged into. Now Amazon knows who I am by my account, what site I was just browsing because of my referrer, and what content I was looking at because they know what the image is because it's theirs (and they have the incentive to track and store this information to try and sell me related things). Why do many of you not even have the option for an SSL tracker?

Don't torrent on mobile. It's more trouble than what it's worth, plus a lot of private trackers won't let you use mobile clients. I've heard some of them may block you if you try. Also if your carrier gets DMCA or has some kind of clause which prohibits torrenting or the like, your account could get shut off. Sucks slightly more than just having Comcast block you for torrenting.

I wrote a script to rar my stuff in chunks and upload to mega.nz on different accounts with megatools, python and 7z.
Each account is 50GB so it's pretty nice.
And I keep those accounts alive with the script from SIG.
