Pic related, you can see the chronograph is missing all important parts.

I think its a fairly common ebauche, so I might be able to find replacements for the missing wheels/cams. I might try to reproduce the chronograph bridge myself, it looks pretty feasible.
>>
>>58953624
>$200 if you go to any standard watchmaker today. <$50 if you find some Slav watchmaker who doesn't care, either locally or ship it to one.

Disassembling everything, sticking it in a ultrasonic cleaner, and reassembling it with oil isn't that ridiculously difficult unless it needs components replaced, which is probably better then to swap the whole movement. Nor is measuring out a new crystal of the correct diameter.

The issue is the only mechanical watches requiring servicing today are expensive luxury ones where they demand they remain in perfect shape to preserve their value, not just their functionality, requiring the expensive replacement of components and other detailing unnecessarily. There is no watchmaking for the everyman anymore because replacing whole watches is easier.

I had the chutzpah to ask a local watchmaker, and among other things included in the cost was a non-negotiable replacing of the crown. This particular watch I have the crown is worn and shitty, but still functional enough for an automatic watch. Fuck off.

>>58953684
If that's the case get a hand puller yourself or an improvised tool and try to correct them. If the movement runs okay after then you're in great shape.

Chinkshit: one year
Casio: five to ten years without significant wear, then a few decades while looking like shit
Soviet watches and better made Russian Amphibias: 70 years to forever, also parts never run out
Rolex: a few centuries to forever
vintage Omega: see Rolex
Omega co-axial: a few months after missing the recommended service date

And people do service their old 7025 Seiko 5's, and we do have a lot of movement swaps for Jap quartz, a lot of times people decide to preserve their beat old quartz watch, and have us swap the movement.

A lot of the cost of servicing is simply work hours, so of course it's going to be more expensive in Murrica where wages are higher.

Also everything below ETA 28xx is not worth it from a money standpoint, it comes down to sentiments. Nothing wrong with that really, I've dumped so much in repairing my own vintage 18000 and 21600bph watches that I could have long bought a modern Swiss automatic, even if all my costs are just the materials.

Opinel just got a few coats of shellac, and I'm in between trying to mirror-polish the blade. Already sanded down the manufacturing marks, so now it's all brushed the fuck up, but not yet polished up.

For the Vostok it's modded up the ass with NATO for every day of the week, SE bezel, Neptune hands with superluminova, and the third dial of its life, but I still haven't replaced the terrible lume job I did. At least it's bright as fuck.

Exactly, it's not worth it, and that's the problem. I'm not seeing what your disagreement is. It's not enough that luxury watches are expensive and are expensive to service, they have usurped everyone and everything below that. In China and elsewhere they hire people off the street to train to assemble watches. I don't need Rolex-quality servicing, yet that is all that is available unless you have a friendly old Slav nearby who doesn't give a fuck.

I don't give a fuck. I see it the same as any other scammy "protection plan" places sell for electronics or other goods and services to clueless customers.

Perform the services as agreed, show me the timegrapher results, and let me bear the risk thereafter because I know exactly what garbage watches I own.

This is exactly why I am taking it up myself to deal with this shit, because the 'luxury' of paying to hold you accountable isn't optional, especially for how little I wear an individual watch to ever uncover such a service flaw during the protection period.

Precisely that, even this generic ETA I have isn't worth it. I'll get some fucking clone movement brand new to swap with. Fuck you.

Yes there's that and the fact that outside of modified ETAs made by higher end companies like Breitling they're almost 100% machine made, assembled, and regulated in the cheapest materials and shittiest machining they can get away with. Beyond just the snobbery reasons of disliking this, it also generally means you're going to get shitty accuracy and the watches that they're thrown in aren't even worth the cost of servicing them.

This. Strip the chrono parts off a 7750 and it looks like a Citizen 82xx. The only reason Swatch killed off the L5100 and not the Valjoux is that it looks better through a display caseback. The Lemania 5100 is a great movement but it's ugly as sin.

If they modify the base eta and/or do some decorative/finishing work, its okay to charge more. But yeah, it shouldnt be a lot more than that.

The worst though, is when a company will take an eta, modify it very little or engrave the rotor, and then give it their own prorietary name to pass it off as in house.

For water resistance these are the general rules.

30m: wash your hands
50m: might be able to shower with it if it has a screw down crown (rare)
100m: swimming/snorkeling
200m+: scuba diving

I wonder though, the original submariners were only rated to 100m. If you stayed within the approved 40m max range, could a gmt master technically be used for scuba diving?

>The fact that you have to have 100m "Reistance" to go 1/10th the depth is dumb as fuck.

The "water resistance" is based on bars of pressure the sealing can withstand. That is converted to a static water pressure at a certain depth. As actual swimming at a given depth might dramatically increase the actual pressure based on the movement of your arm and the water current, the practical limit is considered much lower.

I dont know shit about scuba diving, so im spit balling.

I figure back in 1953, when the sub came out, they werent going as deep as modern divers do.

So as long as you stay in 1953 deep diving range, you should be okay diving with a 100m rated datejust or explorer ii, gmt, i guess?

Yeah its dumb you can only go a quarter of its rating, but the depth isnt the only thing putting pressure on it; you move your arms around, pressure on the seals goes up.

I think rolex underrates the cases though. Theyre pretty tough. You could probs go deeper than youd think.

There's a big difference between 200m and Diver's 200m, which means it complies with ISO 6425.

You don't see it much anymore, but there is also a Diver's 100m.

That being said, submariners were the diving standard before there was a diving standard. That's part of the reason Rolex never went for ISO certification, by the time the certification came about they had already proved themselves.
>>
>>58959331
>I think rolex underrates the cases though. Theyre pretty tough. You could probs go deeper than youd think.

Rolex is one of the only brands that are actually "water proof" in the proper sense of the word as they do actual water pressure tests on their watches to 125% of it's rated depth. Which shouldn't be surprising considering the entire Oyster line is all made of thick 904l steel with screw down cases and crowns.

It depends on which ETA movement, which grade of that movement, and the price being charged for that watch.

I don't have an issue with ~$500 watches with ETA 2824-2s or ~$1,000 watches with ETA 2892-A2s, but when you have companies slapping ETA movements in half assed dial/case/bracelet combos and charging thousands of dollars is when I call bullshit.

Thoughts on the Lord Marvel?

I'm looking for a dress watch and stumbled across this beauty of a watch which also should satisfy my hi beat lust.

Any owners, past or present?

They did put out this chart (probably a few years old)

So what, you can walk around in the shallow end, but not swim?

Youre right, i wouldnt risk it. But if some guy was just chilling in the pool, and the case flooded, and omega didnt do warranty work after putting out this chart, that would be mad niggerish on their part.

While it's technically not a member of the dress watch genre, the Lord Marvel is certainly formal enough to work on dressy occasions.

From what I know the 5740 movement is pretty sturdy, so reliability shouldn't be too bad. They were also produced for a LONG time so there are a crapton of them out there, meaning finding a donor for spare parts shouldn't be too hard or expensive in the worse case scenario.

Make sure you do your research on the watch so you don't get scammed though.

>>58960461

The typhoon logo on the dial means it's a Suwa design. Daini produced watches have a lightning bolt logo as in pic related.

>>58960473

Oddly enough, it does. The Lord Marvel name is not related to the LM which stands for Lord Matic, as far as I know.

Hey /wt/

I'm looking to buy a watch that looks approximately like the one pictured, and I'm open for advice. I'd like for it to be simple, thin, and I'm perfectly happy with quartz for this one.

Look into the Orient Bambino for a mechanical or buy some chinkshit of alibaba ot aliexpress or some shit for the same watch but a fraction of the price

Will have a shitty amplitude after ten years of neglect. Service it and they're back in business. 21600bph means they'll be unbreakable. The old 18000bph slavshits have not only outlived their first owners but will probably us as well.

Here is the Seikoholics forum's brand entry for the Lord Marvel 5740C (and it's the C variant you want):

http://seikoholics.yuku.com/sreply/422/3rd-Generation-Lord-Marvel-calibre-5740C-hibeat-36000bph

Please note that, as far as I know, the Lord Marvel was only ever produced with white/off-white, silver, and silver linen texture dials. Any other colors you see are redials and should be avoided.

Also NEVER bid on vintage watches from India, South Korea, China, or anywhere in Asia that is not Japan, really. They are all polished, redialed, frankenwatch monsters looking to rip off the clueless.

Here is a detailed series of photos and description of tear down and service on a 5740C movement:

http://seikoholics.yuku.com/topic/1188/Inside-the-Seiko-caliber-5740c-high-beat

Now spend some time on Google searching for "Seiko" "Lord Marvel" and "Seiko" "5740C" and do your studying so you know what good original condition ones look like and how much they should sell for.

And good luck and happy hunting.
>>
>>58962272
What's the history behind lord marvel seikobro I can't find any on it?
>>
>>58962490

This series gives a good overview of what led to the development of the 3rd generation Lord Marvel:

https://monochrome-watches.com/seikos-affinity-to-hi-beat-movement-part-one/

Basically, the Lord Marvel was an existing mid-range Suwa Seikosha watch (using the 5740A and 5740B calibers) which was then used as the test-bed for Suwa to develop a 36,000 bph movement (the 5740C).

Once the Lord Marvel Hi-Beat had proven itself, they used what they learned in designing the 61xx caliber that powered the Grand Seiko 61GS models.

However, the Lord Marvel model with the 5740C caliber turned out to be a good seller and so Suwa continued to produce it right to the very end of their production of mid-range and up mechanical watches, meaning it was produced from 1967 all the way to ~1978. That's why there's so many of them around.

Feels Goodman, SARB017 is running at chronometer levels right now. Can vouch for this one.

That being said I had a lot of trouble with the initial 6R15. I took it into Seiko three times over the course of a year for warranty work before they finally just replaced the entire movement. Ruins the provenance of the watch, but oh well, it will be my secret. 6R15C in, 6R15C out. Nobody will ever know.
>>
>>58963890
See this is what I don't get. The website says it could be +/- 25 but you're saying 2
>>
>>58964247
He also says he sent it in thrice over.
>>
>>58964254
But it got the same movement? Is it chance it happens to be chronometer accuracy?
>>
>>58964271
It's chance that the watch has only gained 2 seconds after 3 days, yes.
>>
>>58964247

To try and keep this simple: There is a big difference between the accuracy rating specified and how fast or slow a specific movement happens to run.

Basically, Seiko specifies that the 6r15c will run between -15 and +25 so that they don't have to spend too much time and money regulating the watch at the factory.

But just because they don't guarantee better accuracy than that, and don't make an extensive effort to regulate the watch to tight specs at the factory, doesn't mean that any individual 6r15 won't run considerably better than the worst possible case.

Beyond that, if you take the time to regulate a 6r15 it will almost certainly be able to be regulated to more like +-5s/d in daily wear and no worse than +-10s/d in any one position.
