Why do websites with linux software almost never come with precompiled binaries and instead just dump the source code and expect you to compile it yourself?

Why does Canonical waste their time with Unity when you can achieve the same concept with gnome?
>>
>>58943569
Because it's one source code for everyone, instead of bajillion different binary packages for every distro variation out there.

Because you should not install binary packages from unknown sources.

Because if it's open-source it probably already exists in your distro's repositories.

Because compiling software is dead easy, programming skills of any sorts is not a requirement.

Companies offering closed-source software usually have a binary package for debian-based, fedora-based distros and eventually one generic archieve you install manually.

This probably depends on what network manager you have. Look around in the DHCP settings, you should be able to disable it there or, at the very least, use manual address assignment and give yourself a bogus address.

But try to remember how to unfuck it in case something breaks down the line.

Few questions...
1. when using
inxi -w
Does it acquire the location for weather data through IP tracking?

2. What service does it use ? Open Weather?

3. What CLI /GUI / Applets do you use to keep informed of the weather?
I used XFCE-weather plugin but it's no longer accurate.
>>
>>58944194
you don't know it's the exact same source code. I don't know a lot about programming or compiling, but I suppose if you knew the exact compiler used to make the pre-compiled binary you could compile the source yourself and compare the hashs. Which makes a pre-compiled binary pointless anyway.

Does your hardware and enviroment have an effect on compiler output? if you have the same source, same compiler, but say one computer as a desktop running amd64 gentoo, the other is a ARM laptop with totally different hardware. Would that result in slightly different code?

How do I know if a USB is failing/faulty?

I have a 32GB SanDisk which as of today, I can't format or create partitions through the disks utility or gparted. It's less than a year old and has always worked fine, except for today.
Pic related comes up when I try to delete the partitions on gparted and create unallocated space, but these weird partitions come up. Also, Gparted reports my USB at 116.72 GiB, when it's actually 31GiB

Okay, so far this is what I learn about Source Mage post installation.

In /etc/sysconfig/keymap you can change keymaps by replacing what goes in KEYMAP, examples are in /usr/share/keymaps.

cast smgl-setup
is a man page intro to Source Mage,
sorcery update
updates the package manager,
scribe update
updates the packages list. After you install new programs you need to update the manpages database with
makewhatis

To update get a list of spells needing upgrade
sorcery -q
, to upgrade the spells themselves known to be available for upgrade
cast --queue

Women and normalfags must be chased out of free software. They're the reason why it's being windowsified and lowering code quality. Based men like linus are always putting cunts in their place by telling them to fuck off. GNU/linux will never need a year of desktop Linux because it already is better than windows or MacOS. If you're too stupid to understand how GNU/Linux works without Fisher Price UI, GNU/Linux is not for you because you're welcoming in SJWs into the last bastion of technology not pozed by the botnet.

On the Gentoo website, the handbook mentions that there are some issues between windows and Linux, in regards to dualbooting. It says that if windows detects a gpt label it will automatically try to boot in EFI mode.

1. Is this an issue if I have Linux and windows on two separate and physical hard drives? Assume I'm installing Linux with a gpt label.

2. If I were to put windows and Linux on the same physical disk (of course with separate partitions, and I have windows configured to boot in EFI mode anyways, then is it really an issue...? Assume I'm using Linux with a gpt label.

>>
>>58947722
I'm not using fedora (actually never used it). I was just pointing out that the content of the wiki clearly explains what they mean with "forbidden items" and why mp3 encoding is part of this "category".
I never implied that I find this acceptable or good justification. Again, learn to read.
>>
>>58947749
No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
>>
>>58947780
I was quoting you as evidence that rhel and fedora are garbage, not attacking you
>>
>>58947749
>>58947787
Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.

You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.

Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

>>58947635

"forbidden" items usually refers to items fedora can't include for legal reasons, the inclusion of mp3 codecs (and other such proprietary software) has been a contentious legal issue for years

another example would be libdvdcss that lets you play encrypted dvds on linux, almost *no* distribution provides this out of the box, certainly not any of the major ones, due to the potential legal headache it can provide

(if you do want libdvdcss on fedora though you'll find it on these repos: http://rpm.livna.org/)

Thanks. I did a lot more research and it appears that some utilities won't even work if you disable IPv6 (ping for example). So now I haven't still disabled it but I've enabled privacy features and I've disabled IPv6 in NetworkManager. That hasn't affected stability of network utilities.. as far as I can tell for now.

technically speaking, this is false

how does compilation enhance solidity? it only introduces extra points for failure if people who are not well-versed in diagnosing build errors have an improperly configured system or are missing a dependency that software or build script maintainers forgot to mention, or if there are bugs in the source that that haven't been fixed yet.

t
82 (Linux swap)

[enter] (default - all remaining space)
t
83

my ISP has plenty of IPv4 IPs. IPv4 is a problem for china/india etc. couldn't care less.

I am being very annoyed. I changed my mother board, CPU and graphics card. I was running ubuntu. Ethernet didn't work after change. I googled and found out it is probably the MAC address change, with no clear information how to change it. I found out later I should change udev 70 persistent net file, which didn't exist for some reason. I tried to generate it but it didn+t work even after reboot. I gave up and reinstalled a ubuntu. it still didn't work. I am sure the ethernet cable works, as i plugged it in a lubuntu laptop where it worked. i am at a loss now, what should I do?

system recognizes an interface and if I set static IP manually the connection is "active" but internet doesn't work.

can you post link? this doesn't make much sense.
>>

well the interface is associated with the MAC adress of the ethernet/LAN module on the motherboard, so when you change it it also messes with the interfaces. it renamed my interface.

I'm thinking i should reconfigure my router, it might be that it still links tha IP with the MAC adress of the previous motherboard and it gets confused

Help me guys, how do I install Slackware from a Windows partition. CD/USB IS NOT AN OPTION.
I want to directly install from one partition to the other. I'm trying unebootin right now and I'll see how it goes.
>>
>>58950242
Start over with Ubuntu and work forwards.
>>
>>58950242
i don't think you can do that
why is CD/USB not an option?

Now that this thread is over, where are we moving to?
>>
>>58950259

This is why Linuxes lag behind Windows.

All I want to do is download on Windows an ISO of what ever distro, move it to a formatted ext4 partition and boot it from there and install. Why does it have to be so convoluted?

No CD burner, no USB large enough. Looks like I have to install Ubuntu.

Can I move the ISO to the partition and just set boot order to that?

The Slackware USB installer image is 35MB. You can either download the packages to your Windows partition and mount them from the installer or set an http mirror as the installation source. option 1 requires basic understanding of Linux and the command line, option 2 requires you to enter the right URL during one of the installation steps.
I had 64MB flash drives back in 1998.
>>
>>58950358

Thank you. For the partition I want to install into, does it have to be formatted to an ext?
>>
>>58950323
i think you still need to configure xorg because your resolution is fucked
>>
>>58950347
No, because the ISO does not contain a ready-made OS. It contains the installation image, a stripped down live environment that has only the programs needed to install the system and a copy of all the packages included in a full installation. Even if you could directly write the ISO to a free partition, you would not be able to install to the same partition you were installing from because you'd need to reformat it (for starters) and probably add at least a swap partition, and if you did that you'd lose the packages and the programs your installer needs to install them and the thing would break.
It would let you break it though, because Slackware respects your freedoms and stays out of your way, even if you want to do something completely retarded. What makes it a good system for learning is that the installation process is simple and straighforward (once you've done it once or twice), doesn't take a long time, so even if you do something retarded you just reinstall and learn not to do it again. You can't learn unless the OS lets you fail. After about a 3-12 months you should be able to avoid fatal mistakes, unless you are a complete idiot and have no business using Linux

The installer handles the formatting but you need to make sure it is partitioned and the type is set to 83 (Linux). I recommend using cfdisk which is "graphical"/menu-based. Don't touch your Windows partition, make at least a root partition and a swap partition (type 82, Linux swap). If you have an extra physical partition (limited to 4), make that your /home partition and have your root partition be about 15 GB or so, unless you want to install lots and lots of software.
If you don't have enough physical partitions, you can make extended partitions, but if you want to do that look it up yourself because I don't feel like explaining that right now. It's not hard. Basically you divide a physical partition into smaller partitions.
The installer will detect partitions and ask you where you want to mount them. It will also detect your windows partition and offer to mount it somewhere too.
When you get to LILO, try the "simple" option and it will guide you through setting up a boot menu. The easiest thing to do is install it to the MBR, but that will make it hard to get rid of. You'll still be able to boot windows normally even if you want to get rid of Linux later.
