IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Chiral scrolling works differently so it makes sense that is has a different icon
And that driver is made by synaptics anyway
>>
>>58912434
>>58912362
And I believe the icon on the left shows one finger scrolling and the right one two fingers

Hi guys, i have an x230 and the guy who sold me did it with pic related inside, 4GB samsung ram with these specs, and i found it is probably an original part, the answer is, i bought a new module from here

will it work in dual channel? i'm really interested in the improvements for the HD4000 but i don't know if there's something i'm missing

Just bought a W510 (q820 real quad w/ht, quadro) for $120 to replace my T420. (integrated sandy dualcore)

Most excited about the fact how I don't have to use the dogshit 1366x768 anymore. Although I am concerned about the pwm on the w510.

Is that pwm flickering problem exclusive to the w510 or does it also appear on the t510?

Anybody have experience with either?
>>
>>58912946
>>58912562
I thought these weren't feasible because the BIOS didn't detect it.

what can you even do with the express card slot?

k thanks, i already ordered it so i'll let you know...

if for some strange reason it starts in single channel there's something i can change? most of things i'm reading right now about RAM comes from the early 2000 so there are only 40 yo people talking about black magic.

oh and a video from LinusTT but i lasted 30 seconds of it, he was trying to make me buy a ROG motherboard
>>
>>58912987
PWM is apparently a problem for all T/W 10,20,30 series

I've been using IntelPWMcontrol _x64.exe with 2000Hz for a few months now on my W520 without problems (other than the exe crashing when doing nvidia driver updates, which isn't a real issue)

Find out what panel you're using with AIDA64, then look up the specs to see what frequency it can handle. Also don't launch IntelPWMcontrol multiple times, that will lead to horrible flickering

The w510 I bought doesn't have integrated unfortunately so I probably can't use the pwm control.

Very fast and easy way to swap your OS on-the-fly IMO.
I've got two 64 GB ExpressCard/34 SSDs.
One with Windows 8.1 32-Bit, the other with Manjaro 64-Bit, Each OS is on it's own with the HDD for the media files, which formatted ext4 so windows can't "see" it.
Very convenient setup, if you need to use windows exclusive stuff without the issues of dual booting or running VM.
>>
>>58913227
You don't
Only reason my gf complimented to my x230 is because is tiny and it just fucking werks even better than bigger PCs.
But it is ugly and not as user friendly as a macbook.
Girls like macbooks, and surface books I can add. Not thinkpads.

The good news is: you can't break the ice anyway with your laptop so neither a macbook will help you and a thinkpad can't ruin you.

The issue comes when you try to install windows that's why I'm stuck with Win8.1.

So, I've been looking into the guides.

I want a computer that is going to be still and connected to power about 80% of the time. Should I still get an X2* or are there cheaper alternatives with the same specs? I don't mind bulky, as long as it's cheaper.
>>

T4** usually are cheaper.
>>
>>58915173
Get an T420 or T430, better display and cheaper.

Again it's the ease of swapping, and the seamless booting.
It's like having a RPi with better specs.

The t420 turbos up to 3ghz but it's a dual core w/ht

The q820 stock is 1.7ghz but it'll probably turbo up to 2.2 ghz with 4 quads w/ht.

It'll definitely beat the t420 in multicore, although not by much. Only reason I'm upgrading is the ability to use a 1080p screen.

Apparently the B156HW01 v4 in the w510 is the best TN has to offer, at least in 2011.

Here's a review with the same panel
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7250/mythlogic-pollux-1613-clevo-p157sm-review/7

I just want to get away from that awful screen. There's no perfect viewing angle for the t420. Anywhere you look there's the TN shift. You just gotta find a good spot and ignore the shift in the corners or wherever.

The machine itself is fantastic, but the screen is so dogshit that I feel people shouldn't recommend thinkpads with shit screens anymore.

That's not a bad price to be honest. It's a lot more future-proof than the Ivy Bridge models. If you want to put the money into doing a screen swap, make sure you do it as a way to gain technical proficiency. It is not financially sound to upgrade every cheap Thinkpad you come across. Just make sure when you buy it they took actual pictures of the unit you're buying, and don't buy ones with stock pictures. Ask questions, etc. Not hard to get something you'll be happy with.

I got my x201 a few years ago for $150 on Ebay, all the pictures he took were my device and I asked if the screen was in good condition, ended up being great. The only thing I saw from the images was a small scuff on the topscreen cover, but otherwise the device was in perfect condition. I have this weird issue with my T420.
Sometimes when I move it around, the sound stops working, and the audio device isn't recognized by the system.
I can "see" the audio is being playedback with the audiomixer but there is no sound.

I'd need to power it off, shake it a little bit, and boot it back and it would work back and the audio device is recognized back, and everything is back as normal.

Any idea what's causing this?

Best eGPU for Thinkpads? I've heard the V8.0 EXP GDC Beast has some issues.
>>
>>58931352
i've used both the exp gdc v8 and pe4c:

pe4c is solidly built, though the board isn't enclosed. thumb screws and slot locking clip keeps the card firmly in place soldered cable is pretty short and a bit inflexible. need to take care in positioning the adapter to not put pressure on the cable connection. works great. stupid expensive, i got one before the price hike

exp gdc is smaller and lighter, and enclosed in a little plastic box. card is held in with slot friction so you wouldn't want to bump it during use. card balances on the tabs of its metal back plate so it doesn't put much leaning pressure on the slot itself. cable is detachable, almost twice as long, thinner, and more flexible. a lot easier to position on the desk. works fine for me. much cheaper, i got one on sale for $30 just to experiment with

i've also heard about the exp gdc having problems with gen2 signalling, but mine seems perfectly stable with an x220. i have a v8.4d, which i believe is a newer revision. until there are problems with it, i'll probably stick with the exp gdc for daily use, since it's a lot more flexible and easier to travel with. i'll be a lot less annoyed if it breaks too

Hey tpg. First time posting here.
After lurking for last couple of months you have convinced me. I'm gonna buy a think pad.

But which one should i get.
It should be able to do some video editing. Write scripts. And be able to do some very light gaming (games like dota 2 and csgo)

Which one do you recommend?
A dedicated graphics chip is preferred but not necessary.

Do thinkpad users eventually develop brain damage? I was looking at that picture with the naked Nigerian holding torches with a thinkpad hanging from his dick and I used to think it looked like an old and ugly piece of shit. Then I got one of these things, and today I look at my T420 and I see a beautifully designed piece of machinery. I can't tell at what point the change occurred but I'm suspecting prolonged thinkpad usage damages the brain

I usually never browse this thread, what is the meme you guys have conjured to defend against integrated graphics? please do tell
>>
>>58935379
ok firstly if you are buying a 4 year old laptop the dgpu is going to be shit in it regardless and desu if you are worried about graphics performance you probably shouldn't be buying a 4 year + old laptop. Second of all DGPU models use a lot more energy and battery life is significantly worse, not to mention the heat output has increased. Thirdly its just another thing to go wrong (read up on all the nvidia failures on earlier thinkpads). Finally the HD4000 found in the xx30 series thinkpads is not actually that much worse than the base model NVS nvidia gpu found in the T430 and T530
>>
>>58935441
also another thing to note the HD4000 found in the T430 T530 is actually a decent chunk better than the NVS 4200m the dedicated GPUs found in most T420s and T520s.
>>
>>58935441
>>58935503
Reasonable answers, I'm sold, how much should I look to spend on a think pad? (Not for gaymen use)
>>
>>58935669
Something decent and in great condition maybe 200-250USD
only models i'd recommend are the x220 x230 and the t520 t530. These are still relatively modern and speedy machines. I tend to keep away from the T420/30 because of how horrible their screens are. The screens in the T520 T530 are far far superior despite them being the same resolution. The T520 and T530 could also be optioned with a 1080p panel and its a drop in upgrade if you ever want to do so.
>>
>>58935669
Between $150 and $500 depending on model, specs.

For example, an X230 with i5, 4gb, 320 or 500gb HDD should be around $150-$250 depending on condition. T series models with similar specs should have similar prices. The ones with IPS displays tend to cost more. Ones with SSDs or i7s will cost more. Workstation models (P or W series) will cost more, but generally have much better specs and displays. Also larger, heavier, hotter, and less battery life.

What's the smallest/thinnest thinkpad that's actually capable, that came before the x230?
>>
>>58935716
for the workstation models feel free to buy the W500 (its a bit long in the tooth now tho) W520 or W530 but keep the fuck away from the W510. The battery life on those is next to nothing and the first gen i7s are just a fireball. They thermal throttle so much that their performance is comparable to a i5 2520m.
>>
>>58935338
>how the fuck do I avoid this
you avoid dedicated graphics. The ones from this period develop problems due to thermal cycling.
