Simple (in the sense of few moving parts)
Stable (in the sense that it doesn't crash and in the sense that it doesn't change the way it does things for the hell of it, for instance the installer has been largely unchanged since it was first introduced about 20 years ago - the only real change was the addition of an http/ftp option for source media and replacing the "create boot floppy" option with "create boot usb")
Very comfy package manager and build manager
Official distro provides binary packages for a LOT of useful software, community maintains build scripts and binary packages for most other useful software
Sane package structure (no "meta-packages", no dependency hell, packages generally don't get needlessly split up)
No systemd
No GNOME (one of the devs provides his own MATE builds if you really want them)
Really doesn't get in your way at all. If you just want an extremely basic setup with a single root partition and a swap partition, you can just hit enter through the whole installation process and have a fully working system in 30-60 minutes. If you want to set up your own complex partition structure, you can do that and it won't complain or argue. If you want to install directly from the -current tree in the official repos, you can do that. If you want to install using a 35MB USB image instead of downloading the DVD ISO, you can do that. If you want to use GRUB instead of LILO (the default), you can set that up yourself. The whole design philosophy is do as little as necessary to set up a working system and provide simple tools for the user to do the rest if they want to.

You can also try Salix (Slackware with a graphical package manager) or Zenwalk (Slackware stripped down to one program per task with a pre-riced Xfce and a graphical package manager).

From this day forward, Android should be referred to as -GNU/Linux or as I've taken to calling it 'Minus GNU Plus Linux'.
While Android does not have most/any GNU tools installed by default, the Linux Kernel requires GCC to to build and as such GNU deserves the acknowledgment of its vital role in making Android functional.

Hey /fglt/

What's your opinion on AppImages? Do you prefer Snaps or FlatPacks?
>>
>>58860488
I prefer packaged programs.
>>
What are some good Linux browsers? I need cross platform compatibility....I don't trust Chrome because jewgle and Firefox because firefox on windows is a stuttering bloated buggy peace of shit.
>>
What can I do with an old laptop? It has a built-in modem.
>>
>>58860488
Maybe snaps? I don't know, but better to have a chrooted environment separate for those because they resemble windows apps.

Anyway, I'll be happy not having any, but they are probably good for noobs and for quick test of new software.
>>
>>58860509
Definitely look for IceCat. You can have all the firefox addons, plus is secure by default.
>>
>>58860555
Their best true advantage is dependency management. Dependency management can become tough when different packages require different variants of the same utility, of which the past and present version are not "backwards compatible". With things like AppImage, its easy. Something that needs, say, python 2.7 can keep that to itself, and something that needs Python 3.5 can keep that to itself without fucking with app 1's config.
>>
>>58860599
But I am not sure how secure that is. I don't blame the guys who mistrust their use.
>>
>>58860624
Here is an article about snappy https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/06/goodbye-apt-and-yum-ubuntus-snap-apps-are-coming-to-distros-everywhere/

I prefer Bedrock's way to handle dependencies, but until then this seems like a good idea for the users coming from windows.

On Manjaro KDE, why can't I get rid of screen tearing? I've tried using all of the choices in the Compositer system settings, but it keeps giving me the same screen tearing effect. I've googled it and ran into solutions that involve Nvidia cards, but I have a very old laptop that doesn't have anything Nvidia and I don't want to apply the fixes in fear of messing up the entire system. Not sure what fix I should look into in general. It's rather annoying.

Firstly, Aliases aren't expanded inside scripts.
If you want them to be you need
 shopt -s expand_aliases

in your script.

Secondly, your code is all fucked up, you append an if to your bashrc to check for an alias file which is fine but then you never actually create that file, the if check for .alias but you create a file called aliasfile and then you echo (and therefore create) an .aliasfile.

Also this
echo bin
> aliasfile

doesn't work, what are you trying to do here?

Basically, here is what I think you're trying to accomplish:

#!/bin/bash

# puts the if in your bashrc
echo 'if [ -f ~/bin/.aliases ]; then . ~/bin/.aliases; fi' >> ~/.bashrc

# creates the bin dir
mkdir bin

# creates and puts the alias inside the .aliases file
echo "alias thing='ls -d */'" >> ~/bin/.aliases

# now if you want to declare the alias inside this script like so
alias thing='ls -d */'
# you will need this
shopt -s expand_aliases
# and then you can run
thing
>>

>>
>>58863424
...The alias/aliasfile thing is a typo. I should probably get some sleep. Thank you for pointing that out, anon.

echo bin
> aliasfile

Is meant to print the word "bin" (just to make things simpler for me), then create an empty file called aliasfile.
>>
>>58863488
Some old BIOS can't boot from USB but that doesn't seem to be the case, just check the boot priorities and see if USB is in there, there's also likely a boot menu when you boot your computer where you can select the boot device.
>>
>>58863556
I see that's fine then, you don't usually need to create a file before writing to it since by writing it automatically creates it. I thought you wanted to echo bin into the aliasfile with a newline or something weird like that.

No worries - You run `source ~/.bashrc` from the command line of the terminal window you're in.

If that doesn't work, and the command you've been trying to fix is working properly when run on the command line, you might try restarting your terminal window. If that still doesn't work then let us know.

The worst part of all of this is that Indigo isnt supported on gentoo, but hey at I have it now. Further more I think I couldve just installed the current updated version of ROS and been fine.
>>
>>58864855
I bet. Currently I am installing a similar distro, Source Mage, installation instructions use rather esoterical examples, like using 7 partitions and XFS for root filesystem.

Pretty strange fuckery, when in reality one can copy paste the first part from the gentoo handbook right up where one download the stage3 tarball.

But at the end, when you installed one source based distro, you pretty much become familiar with all.

Generally the older a game the better the wine support. New releases often cause bugs on wine and it takes a while to get it ironed out. If I wanted to play new games I'd have a windows virtual machine with gpu passthrough. You get a really cheap gpu to handle Linux stuff and let qemu have complete control over the other. Then you have 95% performance compared to native.

a) use a distribution which uses a patched Firefox that makes it use KDE's file dialog
b) patch it yourself on your distribution
c) patch GTK2's file dialog and make sure to compile Firefox with GTK2 support instead of 3
d) learn to organize your files, rely on the tiny preview and wait for an improvement to hit GTK3
>>

well it's a power management issue (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface), it may be a bios or kernel bug, but it's not particularly worrying on a gaming mobo.

Any recommendations for things like Wifi and GPU?
>>
>>58869453
for wlan go with intel (proprietary drivers but work) or atheros (free drivers but work).

for gpu you either go with intel iGPU (should be the least painful one, as the drivers provided by intel are included in the kernel and you don't have to install anything).

For dedicated GPU you should go with AMD and opensource-radeon drivers if the GPU doesn't support amdgpu-pro.
Otherwise go with amd and amdgpu-pro drivers.

Avoid laptops with switching GPUs like fire

I fucking hate the faggot file picker fucking shit tier retard dev couldn't just made it adjustable but no had to make a fucking arvid's tiny penis size preview for epic fucking lulz I mean goddamn fucking hell just kys

Firefox is GTK2 you dumb faggot. Your desktop environment has nothing to do with it.
You could install CDE and still not have access to a non-retarded filepicker.

>>58873453
Literally noone but drooling imageboard drones with shitton of vaguely named animegarbage and reddit frog pictures all thrown together into a single "Download" folder think this is important feature.

Prove me wrong.

You asked why retard gnome dev didn't consider this feature worthy of being bothered, I answered you why.

Gnome devs have a metric shitton of more important problems to be solved than pandering to children installing arch thinking they're cool.

K(udos) to Kde for preventing shitposters from easily picking up some dumb reaction image.

>Prove me wrong.
You're right. But who ever said that was a deciding factor?

Here's my beef with it:
If they were trying to keep things lightweight and didn't want to load libraries and code into their filepicker for image rendering then that would be acceptable, I could understand that.
But what I don't understand is that the filepicker clearly already DOES have the capability of rendering images. How the hell could changing "16x16" to "128x128" in the code, or adding a little slider to change the size possibly inconvenience anyone? Sure it might use more memory but that's a clientside problem, that shouldn't effect the developers at all, the change they need to make is extremely minimal.

Install OpenSuse. It has Firefox and the Filepicker patched by default.

so I should install a linux distro only based on the file picker thumbnails?
this is stupid, there has to be a way to make it work, I just don't know it yet.
GNU/Linux is supposed to be the "you can do anything" OS

It's a command history, you can disable it if you want

what about it?

>(friendly reminder to donate your organs too)
really conscious about this because in my country a list with all organ donors leaked.
That means is someone really needs the organ and has a lot of money, guess what can happen to you

According to the manual you can simply
unset $HISTFILE
>>
>>58873926
That's more elegant. Would be nice if LESSHISTFILE would allow this too (looks like it doesn't).

systemd is free software, there's no botnet
the fuzz is about systemd not following the unix philosphy, don't bother

Linux has 2 clipboards. "clip-board" is the ctrl+v one, and "primary" is the highlighted text one. You can write to them like this:
>COMMAND | xclip -selection clip-board -i
>COMMAND | xclip -selection primary -i
So for example:
>echo -n "Hello, I'm in ur clipboard now :3" | xclip -selection clip-board -i

As >>58874173
pointed out, in addition to the "Ctrl-V" clipboard used by GTK/Qt/other GUI apps, there is a middle-click clipboard analogous to how the mouse works in a TTY - as soon as you select text in any program, it goes into the buffer, if you middle click it pastes from the buffer. the middle-click clipboard works even in programs that do not have a "Ctrl-V" paste, such as xterm/rxvt. if you right click in your browser and select "Copy link" or "Copy image location" or click on a YT video and select "Copy video URL" it also goes into the middle-click buffer so you can easily paste that into a wget or youtube-dl or mpv command. just be careful pasting into a command line because it will read all newlines as if you typed it in and hit enter.
