>>
>>58839901
>or my computer is clinically retarded
Shit happens. My old shitbox is extremely picky about it as well.

Try different software for making bootable USBs.
I always get different results. unetbootin worked for fedora but I had to resort to a windows machine running rufus to get a debian one.

If everything fails, use a CD/DVD. They always work
>>
>>58839925
It's so difficult to find a CD with 2gbs of space, so I'll try to pick up a namebrand usb instead of the cheap surplus ones I have. If that fails, my pc just can't run linux for some reason
>>
>>58839901
sometimes the application I used was the problem, unetbootin, so I use a simple command line burning method

cp distro.iso /dev/sdX
sync

where "X" is the correct device letter

other problem can be the BIOS, but that is computer specific, easily solvable by changing the BIOS setup
>>
How to get rid of bottom window in emacs?
>>
>>58840012
tell us how you're making the bootable usb, the problem may be in your process and not the drive. also are you just expecting it to autamagically boot from it or are you going into boot device selection and choosing it? there's several things it could be that you should check on before droping cash on another drive and finding that wasn't the problem
>>
I've been trying to figure out a way to read .ePUB file from the command line but I'm not having any luck. I found this script but I just get "Cannot read file epub-read.css" after running it.

I'm not too knowledgeable with bash commands so if someone could help me out here, or point me to a better solution that'd be awesome.

C-x 1.
C-x o to change between frames.

If you want to put it back again do C-x 2 for horizontal split and C-x 3 for vertical split.
C-x 0 removes all frames but the one youre focused on (C-x o)
>>
>>58840047
Create the directory
emacs.d
in your home directory, or enable read/write access to it. Kind of weird that emacs can't access it though.
>>
>>58840056
I'm using rufus and burning the .iso to my usb drive. have also tried burning it as a DD. Then when I start my computer, I press escape and go to the grub screen for the distro boot and select install. Then a few minutes into the boot screen processes, it basically crashes and stops progressing
>>
>>58840106

>>
I deleted the Linux-swap in order to add like 50gbs to my Ubuntu partition. Since my laptop freezes up like all hell and takes forever to boot (I'm guessing it's searching for the boot file)

What can I do?

I'm thinking about clean installing because it's gotten so bad.

screen. GPL
tmux BSD
tmux includes most features of GNU Screen. It allows users to start a terminal session with clients that are not bound to a specific physical or virtual console; multiple terminal sessions can be created within a single terminal session and then freely rebound from one virtual console to another, and each session can have several connected clients. The features that differentiate tmux from GNU Screen are[3]

menus for interactive selection of running sessions, windows or clients
window can be linked to an arbitrary number of sessions[4]
vi-like or Emacs command mode (with auto completion) for managing tmux[5]
lack of built-in serial and telnet clients (which some consider bloat for the terminal multiplexer)[3]
easier configuration[6][7][better source needed]
different command keys—it is not a drop-in replacement for screen, but can be configured to use compatible keybindings

I would always recommand ubuntu for beginners.

But I have to mention that I got had success with installing arch with the arch guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide.

I'd like to mention that the guide should has many small 'personal successes' along the way to let you stay motivated. (changing the layout, setting the time, learning hdd partitioning, change console, seeing the graphics user interface 1-2hours in).
But huge caveat thought, they kind of shortened the guide it seems, I remember reading a much longer version years ago...

Anyway I only attempted it after using ubuntu rather for a year casually

There was a need to have Windows a few weeks ago and I installed it on a spare SSD, basically fucking up grub. I went ahead and did grub-install and update-grub since it looked like the easiest way to recognize all operating systems, but seems I was wrong and it could only recognize debian. After a reboot, the motherboard refuses to use the debian option to boot, defaulting to the windows bootloader. The only way I could access the Linux drive was by choosing the drive on the boot options manually, a tedious task. The need was calmed down and I nuked that Windows drive. Thing is that now my motherboard refuses to boot up to Linux unless I choose it manually. What gives?

The other thing is with Windows. I tried installing a different version of Windows, 8.1, and it refuses to use the available drive despite it being cleared up. Is the debian option conflicting with the installation? This is giving me a headache. I bet using a KVM with a GPU passthrough is probably even more tedious.

tl;dr m$ fucked my ass up

That's pretty much the entire point behind building from source: you can see exactly what the code is and build it specifically from your own machine.

What are good books to start self-learning a linux administration? I have been using various distros as a main drive for almost 4 years and now I decided to improve myself in few things and it's one of positions in my list.

>>58842680
It depends of what software you are using right now and what you choose to use next. Not deleting .* files before installation save your settings hidden in configs inside your home directory.
>>
>>58842680
user settings are stored in "dotfiles" in your home directory.
you have to use ls -a to display them, since everything starting with a dot '.' is, by convention, hidden.
since you probably don't have /home on a separate partition, copy your home folder to a usb drive or other backup medium and then copy it back into your new install.

system-wide settings are mostly stored in /etc, but you shouldn't copy those over.

why do you want to move off of mint, though?

that's great, then. don't re-format the /home partition during install and it should be OK. make a backup regardless, in case something goes bad.

>Because in this thread you guys said Mint is unsecure.
yes, but you're not running an internet-facing production server, right?
I can't really imagine how mint would inconvenience you at this point, and I think it would be better for you to stay on it until you know enough about Linux to make informed decisions instead of letting a bunch of neets make those decisions for you

There is no point in indulging in such banal activity as video games when you could instead be appreciating art (e.g. watching film, reading literature), learning something new, or getting on with plain menial work. Even doing nothing and staring at a blank wall is more enlightening, more relaxing, and less escapist than playing video games. Most people play video because "it's fun", and justify it so. It's the logical equivalent of a drug addict justifying their addiction; I don't care just how much you may or may not enjoy video games, as the fact remains you're wrong in doing so. /v/ is proof enough.

Those seem the biggest two for linux babbys. I've heard about Ubuntu's spyware and hate the idea of it. Is there a fork of ubuntu that strips it away?

Ubuntu just works. Arch requires a lot more effort and knowledge to get it to function, but it's absolutely worth it. Xubuntu probably doesn't have the spyware, as does Mint, which are both based on Buntu. Debian is the origin of Ubuntu, with extremely stable if slightly outdated packages, and no spyware (completely free). Try debian first, then try mint/xubuntu if debian gives you problems. If you think you want to tinker a bit more, get arch, pacman is great.

A desktop environment, the look and feel of your desktop plus some default applications.

The vulnerability is theoretical, but the target is that DE (desktop environment) and KDE, another DE.

If you go for "net install" (like Devuan), which means bare bones distros, you can choose a diferent DE, other thatn GNOME and KDE.

If you plan on using something quick, you can choose LXDE, Xfce, Cinnamon or MATE. They are alternative DE's.

But seriously, don't listen to trolls, we suspect they indeed are paid to create confusion.

No one but redhat would take it up.
Immediate issues with systemd would be patched around, and if it came to be believed that the architecture of systemd were flawed, we'd begin a transition back to sysvinit, or hopefully something better.

I don't really get the systemd hate. There's this extremely vocal minority of people who don't like it for a number of reasons, but for some reason they feel that they know better than almost every other high-skill, high-level distro developer and maintainer.

If you feel that systemd is so cancerous, why aren't you involving yourself in the places you can to prevent it's advance or provide objectively superior alternatives?

there is two things to my understanding you need here, first, you need to know how to create a launcher icon in KDE, second, you need to know the proper command to launch foobar from the terminal

after you know that, you can insert the foobar launching command into the launcher icon

that's my 2 cents

You can't chose Fedora/openSUSE and then complain about multimedia issues, anything RPM based does not support multimedia

The closest I ever came was customizing the PlayOnLinux WINE wrapper. It can be pretty slick (and manages multiple WINE environments automatically in case you want 3x Ultima Online clients open at the same time).
