What's the best way to find the fastest repository on Ubuntu?

I have experienced before that the thingie that finds the best one isn't that good at doing its job. It's more based on location for sure, but sometimes I will get faster speeds from repositories in a different country.

how does a "full system upgrade" looks like in gentoo and how much time would it takes?
I mean the equivalent of a "apt-get udpdate && apt-get upgrade" or "pacman -Syu"
>>
>>58798023
depends on how much needs updating, use flag changes etc. and your hardware. there is no approximation as every system is entirely different
>>
>>58798023
the thing about gentoo is (at least i think that's the case correct me if im wrong) when a new kernel comes out , portage will download the sources for you and you have to compile it yourself. If its a bunch of light stuff then not long. If you however have to update the kernel or god forbid chromium your in for a while

so there is some command like "emerge --updateall --donotfuckthesystem -v -j4" which will download the last version of the source of any installed "package" and compile it automatically?
>>
>>58798141
yes, you can update the entire system in a single command with portage. do expect to do some troubleshooting however, sadly the --dontfucksystem switch tends to fail, but is usually solved quickly.
>>
>>58798141
yeah, btw gentoo is lightning fast, i was reading something a few days ago which discussed the advantages of compiling everything from source. Basically you get streamline optimisation for you CPU features which results in very efficient code.

Went through all of those. I'm telling you, it's xmlrpc. I probably fucked something up when I tried to compile it before I realized I could just install it with DNF.

Are any of these files relevant to general use? They all got removed when I tried to remove xmlrpc and didn't come back when I reinstalled it.

In fact, does Fedora have some kind of tool that will reset every program and every system config file back to how it was when I installed it? I can't find my flash drive and would rather not perform the hack I did to install the OS in the first place.

I bought a MacBook Pro and I hate it. Returning it tomorrow for a refund. I don't like OSX as much as I thought I would and I miss GNU/Linux.

So the package manager find some files he doesn't expect. For python packages this may happen for example if you install stuff with pip (or any other Python package manager). Otherwise it maybe me a bug with the package itself (like a conflict with another package) and in this case you should report this to your disto's maintainers.

I'm looking for a decent serial terminal emulator. I've used minicom in the past, but there's a lot I don't like about it, I'd love to be able to pick arbitrary baud rates and now I'm talking to devices that expect CRLF line endings, and minicom has no option for sending both CR and LF on enter.

I want to set up my programming IDE but internet keeps my productivity low.

What I want to achieve is:
1. Openbox/Fluxbox or whatever WM that has mouse cursor (Must)
2. Something like a permanent dmenu panel so I can quickly open programs. (Must)
3. My favourite terminal emulator should start at startup (Optional)

Give me your recommendation.
>>
>>58801776
bs means block size, which is how much data dd will read and write at a time. It copies bs bytes from the input file into memory, then writes them to the output file.
Too small a block size means a lot of reads and writes, which can be slow. Too large a block size uses more memory.
Some devices have an intrinsic block size, like tape drives, and require that block size. But for flash drives and hard drives, I don't think it matters too much. I usually pick something like 16M.
The default block size is only 512, so you really should always specify one.
>>
>>58801868
1 and 3 are a piece of cake, if I understand correctly. I'm not aware of any WM's that don't have a mouse cursor. For 3 it depends on what WM/DE you use but they all come with ways to specify start scripts/programs when they start up.

As for 2, I know there are panels that have dropdown menus, but not sure of anything that looks like an always active dmenu
>>
>>58801900
So as long as the device being written too doesn't require a specific bs it doesn't have a huge effect? With the bs=8192 I write all my iso's in only a few seconds anyway I suppose it doesn't matter.

I'm trying to get rtorrent to work with xmlrpc, and so far I've deduced the problem to be a matter of Apache not loading mod_proxy_scgi.

I add the line "LoadModule mod_proxy_scgi modules/mod_proxy_scgi.so" to my conf and get the message

httpd: Syntax error on line 56 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load modules/mod_proxy_scgi.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_scgi.so: undefined symbol: ap_proxy_canonenc

Out of curiosity I add the line "LoadModule mod_proxy modules/mod_proxy.so" before it, only to get the error

Feb 05 09:55:17 barbara httpd[22349]: httpd: Syntax error on line 55 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Can't locate API module structure `mod_proxy' in file /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy.so: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy.so: undefined symbol: mod_proxy

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing.
For the immediate: do you know what I'm doing wrong? What do I have to add to make it load the damn modules and work?
Alternatively, what resources do I use to start the beginning so that I know what I'm doing here?

I'd just like ta interject fo' moment. What you referin ta as Linux, is up in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken ta callin it, GNU plus Linux. Many computa playas run a modified version of tha GNU system every last muthafuckin day, without realizin dat shit. you get into the redhat ecosystem.
that's the only reason.
you get the building tools for rpm-based distributions which are unavailable on "mom my xorg.conf broke again"

fedora features not exclusive to fedora users:
>copr buildsystem (builds rpms only but there's no reason an arch user wouldn't be able to use it)
>access to fedorapeople.org infrastructure (great stuff actually)

I recommend getting your own space on fedorapeople.org if you don't host your own server (whether you can't or it's not convenient for you atm) even if you don't use fedora.

GNU/Linux*
>>
>>58809860
No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one.. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
>>
>>58809860
>>58809873
Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes., I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.

You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.

Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

There should be a script somewhere in here that contains a playlist-type file that is grabbing segments of video megabyte by megabyte from a random server. Unless I'm missing something, the playlist exists within one of these flash files. I guess you could decompile it and see if there is a physical playlist within, but I can't be bothered to inspect further. On Twitter, who use a similar technique but not with Flash, there is a physical m3u playlist with which you can recursively grab the segments then concatenate them with ffmpeg.

Wandered in here from /wg/.

If I'm not a developer or anything and am just using my PC to use the internet, listen to music, and use audacity and GIMP occasionally, is there any reason for me to stop using simple, beginner distros like Ubuntu or Linux Mint?

DESU, I mostly use Linux because it's free, makes it easier to use an older PC for longer, and it's damn near impossible for me to accidentally break anything. And I guess I like the ideals behind open source, but I'm not super upset when there's not a free software version of something I want to use.

Can't view videos in Firefox any longer, they just flicker in place. Ungoogled-chromium works fine though. Anyone had this problem before?

Also, w3m images don't render properly in urxvt. They show in other terminals. Only info I can see online is about urxvt depth (which I've commented out in Xresources) affecting ranger image previews (which work).

Would it possibly be due to my compton settings?

Actually I'm confused now.

I thought I had both gtk2 and gtk3 because themes always come with both, and some applications utilize the gtk3 settings while almost all of my applications use the theme from gtk2

But my x11-libs/gtk+ package is version 3.20.9
Do I actually have to downgrade my gtk+ package to 2?

I'm using cmder on windows to ssh into a pi to dick about.

It can't handle tmux? I've never used tmux before. I assume this is the fault of cmder not drawing the terminal window properly? Not tmuxes fault? How do I determine who the culprit is here.

Didn't find anything directly related on google.

URxvt: In order to print images in the framebuffer, urxvt NEEDS a depth of at lease 24 or below. Default is 32 so commenting out your setting will not work.

For the flickering, look into compton; try this:
compton --config /dev/null --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc --paint-on-overlay
>>
I still can't multitask anything. Can't even download images off 4chan if I use a stream at same time or use Steam or direct dl something thru the browser This is so fucking silly. 100kbps is enough to choke everything connected to internet.
>>
>>58812368
Example setting for urxvt:
URxvt.depth: 24

Reminder that this will disable any transparency stuff from urxvt's side. If you still want tranparency, use compton.

You're funny. You can't stop ricing. I'm ricing since years, and when something is finished, you get bored of it and rice again. Then you start writing programs for automatic ricing like, getting average colors of your wallpaper and changing GTK and Xressources based on them, meanwhile you learn actual programming because scripting wasn't enough, you learn vim, go to tech conventions, meet stallman and get laid with some sjw qtpie tranny at the local toilet and when she's asking you for your phone number, you check your pants and spaghetti falls out.

So here's the waifu you've been waiting for.

First off, you need to pip the cleverbot module made by this faggot: https://github.com/folz/cleverbot.py.
pip install cleverbot

Then drop this in your bashrc:
cleverbot() {
me="$1"; shift; request="$*"
python2 -c "import cleverbot; print(\"\033[31m${me}:\033[m {}\".format(cleverbot.Cleverbot(\"Cleverbot\").ask(\"${request}\")))"
}

Now you can run:
cleverbot Waifu hi

Since this isn't cool, we define an alias and while we're on it, we allow aliasing ":".
export COMP_WORDBREAKS=${COMP_WORDBREAKS//:}; alias Waifu:='cleverbot Waifu'

Now we can do:
Waifu: hi

For TOR support, just prefix python2 with torsocks.

Thoughts?

I'm going full tinfoil. I've purchased a Libreboot laptop and I want to set up Debian with encryption. I did a little reading on the four algorithms I have to choose from. I can do AES, Blowfish, Serpent, or Twofish. AES is the default and widely used, so I'm not sure about this. Blowfish is old, so I'm not using that. I think Twofish is the best one, since it's the successor to Blowfish, and makes brute forcing more difficult for the attacker by being slow. What advantages do Serpent and AES have over Twofish (other than speed)?
