I got dt770s pro 250Ω and I'm just wondering whether or not I need to buy an amp for them, or replace them for a lower impedance model i.e. 80Ω ? They sound alright for metal and such music (250Ω w/o amp that is), but I'm curious since I'm not impedance savvy.

what's wrong with z reviews
>>
Hello, Steven C.
>>
>>58775948
It alters the voltage sensitivity between the models. It's more likely that you need an amplifier if you choose one of the higher impedance models because you will need more power(voltage) to drive them. The impedance alone doesn't tell you anything important about the requirement for amplification. And even if you know the headphone's voltage sensitivity, the answer to you question depends on how much power is your current gear able to provide as much as the load. If you don't want to worry about the amplification, get one of the low impedance versions.

Kinda depends on what you're doing with them. Use them exclusively at home? Go for 250 or 600 and buy the Shiit stack or something.

I got the 80Ohm variety because I sometimes use them on the train/plane or when I'm in the computer lab in my University and don't want to carry an amplifier with me.

When I went to the store to check them out I didn't hear any difference between the 250 and 80 variety but don't know exactly how they were powered (music came from an iMac but cables were hidden so no idea about DAC/amps).

Not an audiophile though, so ymmv.

I own a 250 ohm pair and you will most assuredly need an amp.

My phone can drive them to decent levels but the sound quality just isn't the same compared to my E10K. The high end especially suffers, cymbals sound like total ass. Whereas amped they are the best headphones I've owned.

>>

>What do amps do for headphones that don't require one to drive them?
All headphones need an amp. I highly doubt you're running headphones only off a true DAC, so your mobo/soundcard will have an amp. DAC out will probably fuckin kill your ears/headphone drivers unless you have a fairly inefficient headphone.

>Will it give more volume/bass?
Volume, likely, though depends on what you're coming from. If your current amp is already powering your headphones, probably not bass. A higher quality amp may tighten up the sound as a whole, but not because it's a stronger amp or anything, just that it's better than your old one. Differences between amps generally aren't hugely significant anyway.

Are the ath m40x with brainwavz hm5 pads as comfy as Sennheiser 558? I have the 558s and I'm looking for a new pair of closed headphones because I'm tired of open, but comfort is a big issue for me. The 558 is only pair of headphones I've tried that I can wear literally all day and feel no pain or fatigue. Anyone have any idea on the comfy rating of the m40x with hm5 pads compared to the 558?
>>
>>58779369
mate why did you take that turtle out of his shell

you might want to consider just getting hm5/xpt100 rather than m40x with the pads

m40x/m50x have quite a lot of clamp, so you'll have some discomfort from taht most likely
>>
>>58779358
>Superlux HD661
I was under the impression the 661's were a clone of another headphone.

Anything to confirm they're 7506 clones?
>>
>>58779369
No because of the M series clamp pressure. Then again you could try stretching out the headband. HM5 pads will help a lot in the comfort of the M40x as the stock earpads are garbage.

If you want a comfortable closed headphone around the same price get the Brainwavz HM5/NVX XPT100. They're not nearly as portable as the M40x are though.

They sound amazing but holy fuck they fit terribly. The headband is too loose and fully extends everytime and even with it fully extended it's still too small unless you have a baby head. I had to use rubber bands so that my ears don't touch the pads. Also the cable is stiff at some parts while flexible at others, pretty poor quality.

I seriously don't give a fuck about what other people think about me when I wear a retarded neck piece all day but it's convenient/comfy. I can't imagine 5 years from now when this becomes more popular. The base is rich and present but not overpowering, and the mids and highs are well balanced with no distortion even at higher volumes.

I have used the clear ones from late 2015 and they were great and they still work fine, but I used some black ones from late 2016 and they broke after about 3 months.
>>
>>58777992
Perhaps. Nice headphones in their own right but desperately need EQ.

>>58778685
All headphones need some source device to drive them that provides current. Most of the time with modern electronics it's a simple amplifier circuitry after a DA-converter stage embedded on to the same chip with low output impedance.

Amplifier's purpose is in the name: it amplifies the signal and this results into louder volume. A good amplifier will not alter the signal in any other way so no, you don't get more bass with a more powerful amplifier or whatever.

If you use a potent headphone amplifier with a pair of high sensitivity headphones, you end up using only a small part of the volume control. Pretty unintuitive, potentially dangerous for your ears and headphones if you turn the volume knob into 11 and at high attenuation most volume pots have audible channel imbalance.
>>
>>58780181
Well you're fucked then. Time to move to a non-shithole.
>>
>>58780031
>order from stores with a good return policy.
Stores with good return policies shouldn't accept returns of headphones due to hygiene. Headphone returns is revolting.

All stores should have restocking fees when the seal is broken. Too many people abuse the hell out of return policies.

So, are amps basically only for volume? When I plug my DT990 600Ohm into my amp, I literally have to keep the volume knob a few millimeters of a turn from 0 or my ears start bleeding.

Yes, that's their purpose but a good amp can have some other benefits over a crappy one(lower noise, quality volume pot, low output impedance etc).

Someone in a previous thread commented that i did not infact need an amp with these IEMs and i did not see it until the thread was archived!

Indeed he is right as these are quite sensitive and works great with lower power sources like smartphones and what have yous.
What he forgot or most likely ignored is the fact that headphone jacks on stationary computers are mostly pure dogshit with frontpanel outs running inside the case next to powercables giving of distortion to the signals.
80% of why anyone would use stuff like the Fulla 2 or Odac is getting around these issues, as is why i went this setup!

you're just trying to justify $100 of wasted money. Fact is that you can't tell the difference between Fulia and and onboard with those IEMs. If you had something that requires 250Ohms, Fulia would be good.

Do a fucking A/B test and see for yourself. If I were you, I'd just sell that Fulia and put the $100 towards something useful.

new HM5 pads have a smaller opening for your ear to rest in.

Get the NVX XPT100 pads from ebay if you want to stay around the same price.

Once you begin looking at the lambskin hm5's, you may as well look at the zmf lamb skin pads or alpha dog lamb skin pads. as they're not that much more expensive.
>>
>>58782545
Leather pads breathe better than artificial leather pads. They won't get as sweaty/hot when wearing them for an extended amount of time, especially in the hotter weather.

Sonically, I don't think there is much of a difference, afaik.

Really not sure but considering there's a review on amazon saying they're amazing with a picture of them hanging beside an LCD(not sure which headphone version) and a Fidelio X2. They might be good. The earpads look pretty comfortable so I doubt you would need the NVX/brainwavz pads for them.

hm5 is the real deal
xpt100 is a clone & has one pair of pads less (iirc the hm5 has flat pleather & angled pleather & xpt100 only has flat)

supposedly the xpt100 has been having quality control issues lately, so if you want to be safe, pay the extra for hm5

Voltage output is 1 Vrms, fairly stable and linear at full output w/ loads above ~30 ohms as with most other iPhone models.
It had a lower noise floor but was somewhat more susceptible to interference than the other iPhones.

The first question is how much louder do you want it to be?

Stupid question that isn't in the FAQ,
How do you deal with WASAPI or ASIO drivers taking exclusive control of the audio? If I have a game open or music playing through the browser, the audio player won't work unless I restart both programs.

I'm using musicbee if that matters

i have the dt770 pro 250 ohm version and use them at work. i personally can't tell the difference between amped (tried schiit mm stack, jdslabs element, cmoybb amp) and unamped (iphone 6s, macbook pro 2014). it's all placebo to my ears. i'm fairly certain anything higher tier than hd558 or hd598 is completely wasted on me.

the one thing i can say for sure is that the jdslabs element (off topic but just ranting) is incredibly susceptible to interference. i use my phone and start hearing static noises. i can't place it anywhere near my wifi adapter. i just purchased a new monitor and i guess there is something in there that interferes with the element as well so now i switched back to the schiit stack. really one of the worst purchases i've made in recent memory. i didn't get any of this interference back when i was just using my onboard sound.

I own a pair of t40rp mk3's which are exactly the same as the t50rp's but with the vent more closed. Honestly the best headphone I've used, both before and after modding them, but I haven't really listened to a lot of headphones. Definitely better than my old DT 770's.

Whatever you do, do not use the stock cable with the MK3's, and you probably want to replace the pads. I'm using alpha pads but I find them a little too thick and would probably buy zmf pads in the future. And be sure to check out the modding scene with these. I'm using my own offshoot of the mayflower mod and I tweaked them over and over until I got just the kind of sound I wanted.

Pads are garbage. If you do want to try them, get the Mayflower versions. Sound-wise they're an improvement, and they ship with pads anyway. Youre hardly paying any more than just doing the mayflower mod + pads yourself, and you have no chance of fucking it up yourself.

Otherwise you could look into other mods that may interest you more if the mayflowers dont look to hot. Modhouse Argons are apparently really good for a bassy mod. I think mayflower also has a more bassy option.

There is a massive head-fi thread with measurements for different mods that may help you out. Stock, the T50's are pretty 'eh'.

In theory you should be able to use any 3.5mm cable, but that custom shaped sheath looks like it may prevent thicker-sheathed cables from being inserted properly, so I'd look for 3.5mm cables with a slimmer termination.

Using a standard TRS cable in place of a TRRS cable (the termination that's used for cables with phone controls) should be without a problem. You'll still get sound, minus the controls.

but when you develop "audiophile" ears which can identify unwanted reverb/vibrations, positional misalignment, audio treatment of your room, it does matter alot. i'd advice for a direct step to isolated standmounts though

>>58795366
>reverb/vibrations, positional misalignment, audio treatment of your room
No disagreement there. Those cause real, measurable, objectively correctable issues. Rattling shit on the wall, cancellation at certain frequencies (ie dead zones, particularly with subwoofers), and echoes all degrade sound quality.

However, a speaker sitting on your desk vs sitting on a retarded foam block won't make a detectable difference except in weird circumstances where you have a sub sitting on a desk or your desk is really lightweight or hollow or some arbitrary, extremely unique situation.

>>58795392
>soundstage
Based on everything I can find on Google, """"soundstage"""" is nothing but a bunch of audiophile bullshit, like most of what they say. Stereo imaging is affected by speaker positioning. Nothing else.

Again, unless we're talking about some extremely unique situation where you're running a super shit-quality amplifier and the stereo channels are leaking inside the circuitry or some such bullshit.

I can guarantee, to both of you and to anyone else who considers themselves an "audiophile", you would not be able to tell a difference between
>using speaker isolation pads or not
>speaker sideways or vertical
>using a $100 set of speakers or a $4000 set of speakers
>using a $100 amp (which is really the upper limit for anything to actually make sense) vs using a $1200 amp
>any of that *completely* retarded stuff like massive cables or cable risers

Rattling stuff in the room, misalignment/poor positioning of the speakers, and echoes however? Yes, you'll be able to tell. Those are real. Everything else is not.

This is the same thing, SAME exact thing as wine snobs. I guarantee you, they cannot tell which is which between an $8 bottle of wine and a $400 bottle of wine. Perception is reality, a fool and his money are soon parted, and it's much easier to fool someone than it is to convince them they've been fooled.

However, spending 800€ on a set of speakers actually gets you literally nothing. I guarantee, if I put you in a chair blindfolded, played your favorite song on a set of $60 speakers and then again on your pants on head retarded 800€ (or even something more expensive), you would not be able to tell which is which. If we did a multi-song test, ran through 40 sound clips all from different songs and artists and genres, you would be right 50% of the time, because you just be guessing.

No, stop spouting nonsense. Just because your onboard was so bad that an E10K not having background noise fixed the sound, doesn't mean everyone 'benefi'ts from an amp/dac.

Bought a pair of DT770 250ohms and the constant buzzing from my headphones amp finally went away.

Only used to Semi-open. I've heard good things about Open though

flat, mostly. maybe a little bassy. mainly listen to pregressive/power/black metal and the occasional gay drum/bass edm trash

They also sound better than my last two more expensive headphones right out of the box.

The DT770 meme is actually real.

It's especially ironic because I used to own the 80 ohm version of these and they were shit.

Basically just looking for something of similar comfort to the OE2s with higher audio quality.

A basic well made amp+dac is better than onboard sound. I don't care how good you think your motherboard is lmao.

Oh please do elaborate on why a basic discrete DAC/amp is better than an onboard DAC/amp.

Why do you keep using the word discrete? what's the obsession?

Before I answer your question, what headphones do you use with your onboard on a daily basis?.

>Why do you keep using the word discrete?
To differentiate the two, because they're literally the same thing, one is just not on the motherboard.

Oh boy here comes the 'your headphones need to be X amount of money to take advantage of a DAC/amp' argument.

will silver plated copper cables affect IEMs with BA drivers in them? thanks
>>
>>58797368
Yeah it decreases the soundstage, bass lacks speed and attack, highs become a tad veiled and overall makes the sound have a lower clarity and crispiness compared to golden cables.

>Stereo imaging is affected by speaker positioning. Nothing else.
You could go read some of Blauert's work, "Spatial Hearing" would be a great start point.
Toole also presents his own summaries of the work.

Let's try a different idea. A subject examines a stimulus, using all the senses available to the person.

>Physical sound.
The pressure difference is propagated through the medium at which point is subject to transfer function imposed by the head and ears. Phase/timing arrival differences emerge, but leave a varieties of possible source locations on the "cone of confusion". Median plane errors are a particular case of the "cone" that are known to be difficult to distinguish.
The sound vibration does not simply transfer to the tissue and is reflected off, creating standing waves. The ridges and troughs of the ear reflect sound in a manner that is highly angle dependent, enabling angle determination even on the cone.

In addition, besides an anechoic space, there are significant secondary sounds that follow the initial stimulus.

>Analysis/perception.
From the "first" sound, there is a masker on recognizing similar sound within a few millisecond time interval. The masking is such that an identical sound quickly presented can be up to 10dB greater, but still not detected. The sounds detected within the critical short window are "fused" as location. Precedence effect stuff. Or was it the Haas effect? I don't recall which one.

The masker decays after 5-10 ms or so, delayed reverberation copies can be identified and distinguished by the continuous running correlation performed on the initial stimulus. Physical delayed reflections will be subject to transfer function shifts imposed by angle of incidence; these are identified as added information, timbre, location and so on.

More later.

i dunno what are you arguing about but if you have nice onboard shit then it's good but many users have bad onboard shit or even laptops where they simply can't change audio equipment so buying something like e10k is good idea

I wasn't going to say that at all, it just seems obvious that you want a separate purpose amp+dac. I would recommend the e10k for most headphones but not for those. You are literally cucking yourself. or trolling by posting a picture of your headphones plugged into a pc.
