IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

First for is there any libretard here?

I librebooted my x200 and installed Parabola, and now my 9-cell battery lasts from 6h to 3h.

Is anyone out there having the same issues?

Are these temps normal for a system under load (doing a full antivirus scan right now on high priority)?

Why is the gt core temp higher than the ia core if the later draws much more power? Im not sure I applied thermal paste correctly last time but too lazy to reapply now.

Hey all, I just joined the business class laptop world with the Elitebook in pic related. What is my best bet to hook up two identical external monitors for viewing documents?

Laptop has a DisplayPort and a VGA port.

The monitors have an HDMI, VGA and DVI input. Here's the monitor for reference.

I once got a Core 2 Duo that got as high as 105 degree celsius.

I don't know if that is normal in a thinkpad but around 90 under heavy load seems normal to me.

If you feel unconfortable you can get up your lazy ass and clean up the fan, and also renew the thermopaste.

Giving it some love always gives back

Any idea why and if there's anything wrong with my T520 if it briefly turns off (all leds light up and shut down inmediately) before actually turning off when I press the power on button? Basically it does the same sort of 'check up' that it does if you remove the cmos battery. Only does this if I turn off Hyperthreading on the bios settings.

P-series. Use the perks at work code in the OP.
They have a model that ships immediatly, but has only 8gb ram IIRC (you can just upgrade that) and a 6700hq with quadro gpu
>>
>>58773331
>i7 3.2GHz or faster
I wonder if they realise that not all i7s are made the same.

Look into the W series. Probably W520 or W530 would be ideal value for money and will meet all of those needs save for the CPU (though it'd probably be fine anyway). Later W series or a new P like >>58773380 suggested would work too but the price would ramp up quickly.

What's your network card? Though Ubuntu should normally have some sort of functional drivers by default.

Unless you're worried about disk space, you can just install lubuntu desktop and use it instead.

If you read through this thread, you'll see that the most commonly recommended generations of Thinkpad on /tpg/ right now are the 20 and 30 generations (x220, x230, t420, w530, etc.)

You will also see that the first generation that offers "modern conveniences" such as "battery life" is the 40 generation. You can read through the previous thread of someone who got an x240, and /tpg/entlemen pretty BTFO of themselves by listing all of the benefits to be reaped by paying not much more for a much newer laptop. By now, the 20 and 30 generations are almost too ancient to use for actual work. They are acceptable if they will be used around the house to masturbate to anime characters and google "donald trump is right about."

You will not get the "barbie doll of the tech world" when you move up to say, an X240, but you will get a faster and much more usable laptop computer.
>>

how can you claim to have better battery life when you don't have 9cell + slice option to get over 20 fucking hours on one charge?

Nah he's just shitposting. If the sudden advent of poor quality posts wasn't enough, it's the fact that he talks about last thread as evidence for the X240 being good, when all anyone did was say how shit it was and that you might as well just get an X250.

So, if /g/ says thinkpads have very shitty battery life, what are they actually used for?

They're advertised as kind of portable, cheap work laptops, but are they even good for that? Or do you guys just use them as cheap tech to mess around with akin to Raspberry Pi?

>>58774976
I have an X61s which I just got, haven't tried it out yet though. It's newer, for sure, faster, has two cores, but it is heavier and I'm not sure how the battery life is yet.

You sound like you know what the fuck you're talking about my dude! You must totally not be insecure or anything. How dare I suggest not carrying around half of a machine's weight in batteries.

Also, those batteries cost money you dumbshit.

>>
>>58775331
Hyperthreading isn't making a difference. For clarification, the lamp, caps lock button, mute buttons and power button light up for a second then all but the power button turn off before actually starting in proper.
>>
>>58775303

The battery life isn't bad, just most older thinkpads come with batteries with heavy charge cycles on them, so the battery life appears bad. I guess battery life is relative to how much you need it to last though. My x230 gets a little over 6 hours while browsing, watching youtube, playing spotify, and writing word documents, and that's more than enough for me, also considering it's not like i'm sitting there doing this 6 hours straight. You can charge in between use, or just put it to sleep when not in use.

I see, what you're describing is the "normal" boot process in mine, that's how it has always booted but what I meant with my issue is on mine right after pressing power button once all the leds turn on for a split second (without hard drive spinning) then turn off inmediately including the power on led and about 2 seconds later it actually boots normally with hard drive spinning up.

>Hyperthreading isn't making a difference.

Wow, the capacity of batteries are all of a sudden strictly dependent on the date of manufacture, and are all made with the latest developments!

>>
>>58775417
Have you considered that the majority of regulars in these threads simply do not like the direction Lenovo has taken with the design of newer Thinkpads? It's not about the specs or the price. It's never been about the specs or the price. If it were about specs and price, Thinkpads would not dominate these threads, but share a more equal reign alongside Elitebooks and Latitudes. What's recommended in the OP is recommended because they work well as entry-level Thinkpads that introduce a newcomer to the design ideals and features on offer without breaking the bank or being too slow for general use. Newer Thinkpads do not follow the same design ideals, so they aren't recommended. Even the --30s are not recommended because of this. It doesn't matter that the --20 keyboard can be swapped in and is all but 100% functional if you reflash the EC. That Lenovo threw out a perfectly good keyboard design just to chase trends is insult enough.

I see, I have a spare internal laptop optic drive from an old HP DV6, I thought the front plate could be swapped.
Where I live it's difficult to obtain parts for the T420, And can't order online.
Thanks for replying.
>>
>>58775899
The front bezel is easy enough to remove and should fit any other drive of the same size. If you've got a spare of the same size there's no harm in seeing if it will run.

>>58775932
The spare does run, It's the bezel that I'm not sure how remove.
Pic related, the spare optic drive.
>>
>>58775981
Once the tray is open, there should be a few clips going from the bezel into the tray, that you can push in to get it off. As long as the clips are in the same place on both bezels I'd assume they're compatible. If you need to get the tray open without putting it in a computer, there should be a pinhole you can push something into open it.

my t430s battery has 240 cycles on it and im getting about 2 hours out of it. Lenovo power manager says the battery is healthy though... would i be seeing a lot more battery life if I purchased a new one or is the battery life mediocre on the t430s

My 3 years old battery on the x230 can go for more than 3 hours of light use and 1 hour and half of hard use (video editing/render), that's what I'd call competitive, today to do better than that you need to go over 1000€ and then there are ULV PCs that are not as fast as my full powered i5, and the thermal design is a shit, the thing can definitely stay a full day at full power while staying at 70° rock stable.
Seriously, bought this thing for 230€ 3 months ago and while everyone is skeptical at first sight on workplaces they have to admit the thing is fucking great even for modern standards

You might need to try as many rescue suites as you can find or a live linux distro just to see if anything clicks - I doubt the internal PATA>SATA fuckery helps at all either.

I would imagine it would be far better than whatever you have now.

I honestly don't know for sure, maybe libreboot handles CPU throttling or something. Maybe it participates on charge measurement so it gives an erroneous reading.

Fun fact: there is a known issue in libreboot with x200, that produces noise in I don't remember which PCB lane, that you can actually hear. Give me a sec, and I'll look it up.
I CAN actually hear that noise.

I can tell you that, since I had my X200 libretarded (Atheros WiFi card, SanDisk SSD, Libreboot, and Parabola Linux-libre) it uses twice the power to function.

I already installed tlp and everything, and still doesn't get better.

(Now that I think, maybe I installed tlp, but didn't specify that I wanted it to be activated all the time)

The optic drive in my T430 no longer works.
There is power but it can no longer read.
So I'm thinking of getting HDD caddy and use it for extra storage.

However I'm afraid the fault is bad connection from the slot part, and it will render the HDD caddy useless.

Is this a specific thing to the thinkpads?
Or it's because of the constant usage and shitty manufacturing of the optic drives?
Or the optic drives are meant to last for 3-5 years?

x1carbon, it's cheaper, has a smaller footprint, and new bezel looks great. The oled screen gives noticeably less battery life, and have to worry about burn in. How much do you really need/want the iris graphics? Unless you specifically need it for something, it doesn't seem worth paying for.

There is nobody who could convince the Legion of Autists that there is any conceivable way that a Thinkpad made today is better than the T60.

Again, nobody here will concede that there is any purpose for machines newer than 2012. I have bought the Thinkpad brand since 2004 I bought 20 machines from Lenovo in 2012. I still have 2 of them hanging around, while they are good for students who would like to be tied to the wall a little more than most, they are not the ideal purchase today for professional work.

Why do people recommend the t430 and t420? the screens are horrible and upgrading said screen to something better is a real hassle. The T520 and T530 are the ones to get as you can just drop the B156HW01 V.4 1080p wide gamut display in. Its amongst the best TN panels i've seen and even gives many IPS panels a run.

Getting a fully paid for laptop for work.

Ideally I would like to get the 2017 Thinkpad line but I don't think they'll be released early enough.

I can't decide between a fully kitted out X1 Carbon or T460.

I want to maximize battery life, portability is important, but not a game changer. From what I see, the T460 has a worse screen, even with the IPS. The Carbon doesn't have anything specifically bad with it, except for the inability to replace battery and fix components.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

You could also consider the T560, which would give you a bit more battery capacity than the T460, and having a quick look at some reviews it sounds like it has a wider colour gamut but less brightness on the FHD than the T460 and X1 Carbon 2015. Of course then that sacrifices portability. Any of them will be reasonably solid choices though.

>>58784344
If you can't find any information about whether laptop drives use different connections then you could used a standard one, as long as the drive will physically fit it. I assume the converter chips would be able to cope, and they're fairly inexpensive even if it doesn't work out.

More than anything though, I'd make sure that there's data on the drive that's actually worth recovering.

Should I buy a thinkpad?

I need a laptop of some kind for my chem classes. I really doubt there will be any kind of programs required for the course, so it will mainly be used for note taking, emailing, browsing, etc. Very basic stuff, ya know?
I'd be using it around 4 hours a day maximum with breaks between theory and lab classes. I've heard some bad things about battery life. Would a thinkpad handle 4-6 hours of light use with needing a charge?

So would a thinkpad or the like be good, or should I spend the extra money for a proper laptop?
>>
>>58787830
If its an old one, you'll need multiple batteries or charge between classes.
>>
>>58787830

I'd reccomend an X series thinkpad preferebly 30 series or better if you want better battery life. I get over 6 hours on my x230 with an i7, however that's on a brand new battery. Buying used means you might have to replace the battery if you want optimal battery life. If you don't end up going with a Thinkpad, consider a laptop with the Haswell(or later) U series cpu. They're low power cpus, so you're likely to get better battery life.
>>
>>58787830
supposedly a X220 with a 9cell battery will get 12 and a half hours or 20 hours and 18 minutes with a slice
>>
>>58788011
>>58788034
>>58788046
Thanks for the info, guys.
Looked at the buying guides. The T series was said to be the best all 'rounder, but from what you guys have said I'll probably get an X series for the bat life. Does the T series really get <6 hrs battery life? That seems way too short for any kind of computer.

Looks like an X230 or X240 would be a good choice, if no anons can think of a reason why not.
>>
>>58788189

X240 isn't very beloved here due to the new chassis, new keyboard(can't be swapped for old like x230), and bad trackpad. Honestly if you can find one on the cheap, I reccomend the x250, if you don't want to bother swapping out the x240's low points.
>>
>>58781615
Save for the Samsung PRO over the EVO.
I have an EVO in my MBP and tried out the PRO in my X230t and W530 after a windfall and love them.

>>
>>58788237
Oh, I didn't even realize there was an x250. The guides didn't make much mention of it.
Thanks for the warning. I'll do a bit more research on the X230 - X250 to see what's good and bad.
>>
>>58788284
They're currently up to the 60 series, with the 70 series coming this year
>>
>>58788238
Awesome. I have a Samsung Evo in my PC that I've had a good experience with, but it's about 3 years old and I haven't been in the market for one since. Thanks for the advice!

is it worth spending extra for an SSD on x220? I heard the SSD are the old shitty kind with limited read/write and speed barely above 7200 rpm HDD.
>>
>>58771536

real talk anon.

I want to get an IBM era Thinkpad, for under $100, for the sole purpose of putting linux on, and dicking around.

I probably won't be running Windows. If it's under $100, I'll prolly throw an SSD in, I'd spring for more if it included it.
>>
>>58788682
Perfectly fine. You can just install your own if you want too. They're SATA III and among the era when lenovo issued a grovelling apology for the fact that the *61 line was limited to SATA I when the hardware was perfectly capable with a BIOS mod

If I get a 15'' t60 it'll be 16:9 right? Also what res do the flexview screens have?
>>
>>58788905
No. 15" models came in 4:3 and 16:10 variants. Only the 4:3 models have Flexview screens, which can be either 1400x1050 or 1600x1200. 1024x768 15" T60s are ugly TN. 16:10 models are also TN, and the highest resolution available for them is 1680x1050. 15" T61s go up to 1920x1200.
>>
>>58786827
What model is that?
>>
>>58781804
new batteries will not make it a modern machine.
"full powered" just means inefficient newer generations have given equal performance using far less energy
>>
Hey, I'm a student and was thinking about getting one recently. I'm really only looking for a laptop that is linux friendly, comfortable to type on, and has a semi decent battery life. It doesn't have to be all that powerful as I'm just going to do coursework on it which for the next few semesters is just different iterations of c and a little bit of python. Would one of the cheaper thinkpads fit my needs?
>>
>>58789365

>>
Why is it so hard to find a T420 with a 1600x900 display here in Ausfailia, its either a T420 with the shittier display or a T420s with the better display but of course shit battery.
>>
What are some Thinkpad accessories that are not Thinkpads that I can waste money on?
>>
>>58789601
Because companies don't see screen quality as something that improves productivity and thus don't buy models with those screens in significant numbers. Especially in a smaller market like here you'll get much less choice in the market at any one time as well, just be glad the prices aren't as fucked as Europe. Though honestly the price for a T420s with HD+ is pretty reasonable if they fit your needs.

I think about buying one of the old elitebook touchscreen model, i'm thinking 2760p
The question is, is the touch comparable to the new tablets or smartphones?
>>
>>58791452
If it's anything like the X220t, it'll work. And it'll work decently for what it's intended to do. But the X220t does have weird limitations - the multitouch is only intended to work fluidly with 2 fingers. Up to 5 fingers is officially supported but only works in the form of "gestures" if that makes any sense at all
Given the age of the 2760p, I'd expect something similar. For 1-2 fingers, Windows 8/10 will work fine. But the fluidity definitely won't have the same feeling as what you'd find on a Surface Pro or the like

Why would you EVER trust a fingerprint scanner? Biometric IDs are very insecure, even when ignoring possible flaws in implementation - as soon as someone has your fingerprints(and they're literally everywhere you touch) they can use it to sign in. If you don't care much about security, just use a fairly simple password, if you do, you should use two factor authentication consisting of a keyfile and a password.

I know this feeling.

Quick question: I've got a W530 with a Samsung PRO SSD. Would I see any benefit in adding an mSATA SSD? What are the typically used for?
>>
>>58793691
mSATA SSDs only work at SATA II speed, so it'll be slower than your SATA III SSD, though not by any real noticeable amount outside of benchmarks. The main use would just be to have even more storage, since you can get up to another 1TB in your spare mPCI-E slot. It's not as practical or affordable as a regular 2.5" SATA SSD, so it's not really worth bothering with outside of X series. You can just get an Ultrabay caddy for your W530 if you want two drives.
>>
>>58793792
I was reading about mSATA SSD caching, but it didn't make sense today given the SATA II speed. Would it's only use be redundancy in the case of wanting a DVD RW drive?

Besides for SSDMAXRAM is there any other crazy hardware I can rice out one of my W530s with?

Yup, just gained some knowledge regarding the topic from another thread.
Basically, all devices have a certain voltage tolerance range that falls out of the official in spec so you might get away with using an adapter that's close to the in spec voltage. However, it's riskier the further you get from the center in spec value.

I currently have an X220t with an i7-2620m and 8GB of RAM and I'm very very happy with it. I actually use it more often than my desktop. But realistically that might really be due to the fact that my desktop has an overclocked FX-4100 which is easily beat even by something like a 2011 ThinkPad.

So what exactly prevents me from stripping my desktop and selling the used parts for dirt, buying a docking station and a eGPU adapter, and just docking my ThinkPad whenever I need anything desktop related (3 screens, GPU, ect.)?

I guess I could save up and finally get a proper desktop, but that's not an option in my current situation. I could've 2 years ago, but not now.

ebay. you can get x200's with no HDD or battery for $40-50, high quality knockoff batteries for like $35, and a real power adapter for like $20. Just throw in any old 2.5 SATA drive you have laying around into it, or get her a small /csg/ SSD.

Are there literally any good thinkpads with 16:10 ratio AND USB 3.0?

I've tried a few of the expresscard adapters on my x200 and wasn't satisfied with any of them. I was only was able to hit about 40 MB/s sustained (as compared to the ~20 MB/s I get over USB 2), and they fucked up the ability to hibernate automatically.

I guess I'd settle for a good eSATA implementation. I just want to be able to transfer files to external drives at >100 MB/s and not be forced into some 16:9 dogshit. (I tried both t420s and x220 and couldn't deal with the screen.)

Check the cable quality, once I got only 50mb/s on the same setup I got the above speed, turned out the cable being rolled and slightly misplugged was affecting speed, after unrolling and properly plugging it it went away.
