To kick off this thread,
I have a very nice question

I picked up some large speakers recently
Like, they have an RCA jack

They are 8ohm, and thus I am worried about what will happen if I plug them into my motherboard's integrated audio. It is my understanding that that is far too little impedance and will work like a "short".

But what I'm wondering is

my motherboard has 7.1 audio

And if you attach power sources in parallel, they share the load

so would hooking up a 3-way splitter to the Front, Rear, and Side jacks, to merge them into one Omni Jack with 3x the regular per-port amperage, be enough to power 8ohm speakers?
>>
>>58724749
You retarded or something?
they are passive speakers and need amp

output from your PC will go in to the amp
>>
>>58724783
but I don't have an amp because I'm a cheap nigger

And my question is

Yes, my mobo's Line Out jack doesn't provide enough juice for passive speakers

BUT

does it provide ⅓ of the juice required?

Because if so, it stands to reason that combining all 3 jacks would provide the juice required (since amps in parallel sum)
>>
>>58724847
No. You need an amp.
>>
>>58724649
So does that mean i won't be able to mount that hdd on my pc in a way that allows me to download torrents directly onto it?

What subwoofer should I pair with my Marantz HD660 speakers?

The bass and overall sound quality are very good, but it kind of drops off on some songs with very low pitched bass.

The really low frequencies in this song are a good example.

Thank you for your time.

I didn't see any build threads so I figured I'd ask here.

I'm saving up to build a new computer since my current one is ~5 years old and has multiple hardware failures. I know everything that I plan on getting except for the case. I was hoping /g/ would give me some recommendations.

Here's what I'm looking for.
-As dust/cat hair free as possible.
-As quiet as possible using multiple additional air fans.
-Mid to full tower.
-No doors/panels to move on the front to turn it on or to access the optical drive/front IO
-Has no tempered glass panel, those are a meme and just a gimmick to increase the price.
-Cable management is a plus but not required, I'll be getting a modular PSU.

I give zero shits about how it looks. I want a functional, quiet, cool machine. Thanks for any input.

What's the reason behind Linux not having a file extension system (.sh, .docx, .txt, .exe)
I mean, there's really no way of telling whether a file myfile is a text file or a binary executable or something else
>>
>>58726133
Think of a proxy like someone holding up a mirror so you can bounce a message off of it. Anybody standing between you and that mirror can clearly see what the message says, and if somebody has a good vantage point they can follow the message back to the mirror and then to you. So it really doesn't provide much protection. A VPN is like the same thing, but the message is encoded between you and mirror guy, and it's usually mixed with lots of other messages from other people so it can't be directly pinned to you on the other end.

>On success, the function returns str.
>If the end-of-file is encountered while attempting to read a character, the eof indicator is set (feof). If this happens before any characters could be read, the pointer returned is a null pointer (and the contents of str remain unchanged).

If you're on a UNIX-like OS you can type

man 3 gets

where gets is the function you'd like to learn about. Up will pop the manual page with all the data you'll need.

gets = "get string". It's defined in string.h

Linux determines filetypes by a different means.

File extensions was really more of a DOS imposed thing. Linux is based on Unix, which didn't use extensions in such a manner. Unix predates Microsoft and DOS.

The real question you should be asking is why did DOS decide to place such importance on such a trivial and unreliable means of determining filetypes?

UX - User Experience
Since packages, zip files and whatnots are being passed around like crazy, users needs to easily know what kind of file each file is. Instead of clicking everything hoping to find a text file only to find out that you just executed a delete script.

i7 6700k or i7 4790k? i look at the specs and it seems that the 4790k overclocks better, but i have no experience with either.
>>
Can someone explain to me how DDR4 speeds work? I see the modules available in speeds from 2133 - 4266, but on my motherboard's specs it has an (O.C) after every speed above 2133. Does that mean I have to overclock it to get that speed, and what exactly would I have to overclock? The FSB? If I just put, say a 2666 module in there does that mean the module is just rated for 2666 and will run at 2133 unless overclocked?
>>
>>58726737
That's doing it for users, not the OS.
The real reason that it's such a big deal in DOS is that DOS had 8-character filename limits at the time. So, you didn't get enough characters to meaningfully convey the purpose or type of your files with just their names, therefore, you needed the shorthand expression of such information that filename extensions gives you.

How the fuck am I supposed to get youtube-dl to work? For quite a while now it has failed to access Youtube videos because it thinks that the ssl certificate is invalid, but it's not.
The devs instantly close any issues opened on their github, always linking back to the same comment that tells you to go to certmgr and delete the certificates related to Google. I tried that, but there's no certificates in there at all related to Google, yet it still fails, so that's not my issue.

Python is having issues with certs, a layer ABOVE
Your problem is with python having cert issues, not youtube-dl which relies on your system being properly setup, using python.

So I'm going to sell my t440 and buy a laptop that I can use Libreboot on.

I only use my laptop for web browsing and writing code now and I don't need something with a lot of power. Libreboot's website has https://minifree.org/product/libreboot-c201/ but should I just go with an x60? Something else?

I have a c++ assignment in which I have to program a car wash and I need to read a physical sensor and wait until it's HIGH to execute some instructions, but I can't stop the program with a while() and read the function over and over again because there are also other inputs with must be taken care of.
The sensor might be on for a fraction of a second, and there is only a function which can read it (e.g bool ReadSensor(void) )

What's the appropriate way to approach this problem?

Excuse my stupidity, I'm studying EE and I've only been taught basic C++.

I'm not sure the idiomatic way to do this in C++, but in C you can use epoll/poll/select/etc to do this. I know some of those can do level triggered if that's what you need.

First answer these questions:

Do you have more than 2 M.2 drives that you want in a RAID Array?
Do you have the latest and greatest NVME devices?
Do you have multiple graphics cards?

Your installation itself wouldn't fuck up, but your ability to boot into your installation will.

Upgrading BIOS is a bad idea in general and you shouldn't do it unless fixing a bug.

if it won't work after this, your computers are using DNS servers that are outdated. Set them to 8.8.4.4 & 8.8.8.8

The good thing is that my 4g is apparently fine. It's averaging around 8/2, which isn't my old speeds obviously, but it's at least consistent. The problem is that apparently, I can't just choose to use 4g because I'm missing the option compared to the screen shots in seeing.

what platform are you using? read up on what interrupts are, whatever MCU you're using will have a hardware interrupt block, you use vendor specific code to configure it at runtime and define a function to be called whenever the interrupt happens, as soon as that sensor toggles your normal event loop is halted, the cpu will stash the current register values and then call into the function, you can then do a very quick evaluation and store the event so your main loop can do something with it. as soon as you return from that function the previous registers are restored and your normal program continues as usual. very handy shit, can't believe you haven't been taught this yet.

Any suggestions on screen recording software for windows?

Bandicam is hard to get cracked. Always uncracks itself after a day or two and needs to be reinstalled. Great when it works including support for Lagarith but I can't be assed to reinstall it every 2 days.

Camtasia sucks ass because it can't record audio outside of it's proprietary container (.trac) which is also crippled by a low quality encoder

DXstory only works with hooking so it doesn't do desktop or transitions

OBS is... great but as far as I can tell requires an APPID to record and isn't seamless like bandicam. I want to switch from desktop to firefox, to games, and have it record whatever app is on screen irregardless of focus or hook. Also can't do "record by selection" only full screen

Things I need/want:
Good support for encoders (H264 and Lagarith primarily)
Windows binary
Ability to seamlessly record between windows without having to hook an application
Easy to acquire and/or crack

I'm close to BUYING an overpriced bandicam license.

DRAM is addressed in blocks at the hardware level. malloc() is implemented in a way the suits the hardware, e.g. on a x86_64 desktop computer all heap transactions are performed with 64bit address space and 64bit registers, the cpu's memory controller is then in charge of handling caching as the actual memory bus may be much larger on newer systems. In a more contemporary design like a MCU your malloc() is normally written by you, and is based on the block size of the DRAM and bus width used(normally 16-32bit ADDR shared with data, 128bit blocks where the DRAM expects 4 write cycles unless it has a done interrupt), so your HW address becomes a line and offset value, line being the lower block number and offset being ADDR%128.

Depends on your skills.
If you are decent, there's enough work.

But webdev is not that easy, unless you want to stay noob level, there are ridiculously many things to know.

Think of it like a stock exchange broker:
It's not that the facts are difficult, but the problem is the sheer amount of information and to know what to use at which point is crucial.

Been there. I learnt general unix and C stuff from reading the man pages.

Honestly at first I didn't understand much. I was constantly googling whatever I had just read in the man pages because those guys have a particular way of writing that is pretty hard to grasp at first.

Also, trivia: if you do $man sleep you'll find the description of the sleep() C function. In some OS, it says it puts the process to sleep; in other it says it puts the thread. It actually is the THREAD always.

I want to dual boot linux onto my desktop and I have a few questions.

1. Should I make a partition for it on my HDD or SSD? Is the speed difference between HDD and SSD for linux as large as it is for windows?

2. What distro should I grab? I haven't touched linux in a year or two, and back then I used Ubuntu, but I want to know what are some good options nowadays.

3. Are drivers going to be a pain in the ass for me? My CPU and GPU are ayyyyyymd.

Not really.
But linux is best on SSD since you can create a mount point fro your media on the HDD.

Ubuntu mate, Linux mint, openSUSE, Elementary OS, even solus.
You can try debian / arch if you feel like it.

In my experince open drivers in the kernel works better than any propriety drivers.
>>
>>58735187
Linux may be slightly more forgiving of HDDs but you should still use the SSD. Distro depends on what you want, most people are fine with ubuntu or mint. Most drivers are automatic. AMD GPUs are not very good for linux

>Is the speed difference between HDD and SSD for linux as large as it is for windows?
yes, use SSD wherever you can.

If you know some ubuntu, try that again.
Distro is irrelevant to all people who ask this question, what they mean is what desktop environment they should use.
>Are drivers going to be a pain
Depends on the distro.

I need a scripting language for an RPG I'm writing. I'm planning on writing the language from scratch in C++.
I was going to create a tiny C-like language, but I started watching the MIT SICP lectures and fell in love with lisp.

So my question is, would it be a stupid/unreasonably difficult project to write a reasonably functional (but somewhat minimalist) lisp-variant interpreter from scratch?
The main thing that seems like it will end up being a pain is memory management/garbage collection, but I feel like it should be manageable.

The breadwinner passed away last week. Our income (13k/yr) is in the gap that doesn't fall for free Healthcare (medicaid) and doesn't earn enough for Obamacare subsidy. My little brother needs an expensive $60 asthma inhaler + $300 doctors appointments and my mother needs medicine for her autoimmune disease. Homelessness is looming over our shoulders.

I have been a piece of shit NEET for the past 5 years. I would kill myself but I need to live and take care of them.

I need a job ASAP but I also want one with potential growth. I don't want to live paycheck to paycheck forever.

I have the ability to pass the A+ and CCNA but I have none of those certs. What job should I look for? I will apply to my local grocery stores as a cashier for the time being.
>>
>>58735660
Why reinvent the wheel for this?
Why not use an existing language, include a library and then foxus on the RPG?
>>
>>58735641
>a diffrun would take days

What the hell? I don't understand.
Why would it take days?
>>
>>58735721
Because I like reinventing the wheel and find it a good exercise.
Realistically, I'm never going to sell or probably even finish the RPG, but at least I'll become a better programmer in the process of completing it.
I could have just used Unity if the end result was my only concern, but I really dislike not understanding how the system works under the hood.
However, I'll certainly admit that if I was being pragmatic and reasonable about finishing this thing, I'd just integrate Lua and be done with it.

I have an Asus z170 m7 and a Corsair RM650x.

The m7 has a secondry 8 pin ATX power supply near the peripheral bar. My power supply 8 pin cables(6+2) don't fit this socket. 6 pins fit, but one of the pins on the 2 pin is the incorrect shape.

Do I need an adapter or is this not needed?

I get that feeling, but there is a difference between understanding something and implementing it and then worrying about the memory efficiency of the thing you have implemented vs something that works and someone else might use.

I'm running a gigabyte 1060 6gb I got for 200usd

How much can I oc the new i5, and will it bottleneck my GPU?
Any other CPU reccomendations? Not looking to upgrade mbo or ram, so devil's canyon line.

I don't know much about modern hardware so I cant give you advice on the other stuff, but yes, your CMOS battery is dead or bad.
>>
>>58736303

First you'll have to use "GPU passthrough" for your VM to be able to use the GPU.

Expect a 10-15% loss if set up ideally, plus the impact of whatever resources your linux install is using. Aside from the passthrough you'll want to have linux on a seperate drive from windows
>>
>>58736444
The exact amount of the overclock isn't gonna matter too much. That i5 is about up there with any other. The main question is whether you're going to regret not getting an i7. There are games that are starting to take advantage of them, and that's only going to be more true as time goes on. So it' up to you whether it's worth ponying up for hyperthreading, but I wouldn't rule it out without some consideration
