The thread that I created got majorly ignored, so I assume I asked a really stupid question. Here is the stupid question:

What websites do you all use for programming? I know about:

stackoverflow
quora
github (bitbucket)
reddit
leetcode
ycombinator
hackerrank
projecteuler

Any other resources? Is /g/ the best board for programming or is there a better one? Is old school irc the best way to go?

So, my dad's been using the same old desktop for years, and it finally broke down. It was a prebuilt that came with Windows XP. The most demanding thing he does is browse facebook, and watch 1080p youtube videos. I've only built overkill gaming rigs, so I'm not really sure what the minimum you need for 1080p video is.

What prebuilt desktop should I get for him? He doesn't want me building one.

"Side buttons" is the term AFAIK. Or "mouse4 and mouse5"

I got the Kensington Pro Fit mouse
>seems Xbox Hueg at first but is actually comfy to use
>side buttons
>DPI change button
>wired

Remember, "configurable" just means that the manufacturer released their own mouse keybind software.

This software is usually
>locked to their mice
>Windows-only
Which means that some of the mouse's "functionality" is locked behind software.

I'm looking for a laptop for school (word, excel, nothing fancy) and general shitposting/weeb cartoons for 250 euro or less. I'm debating whether some secondhand business notebook from eBay would be good enough, or if I should look at a more recent budget consumer laptop. Those elite books and latitudes look pretty good, but I've read that the screens are horrid and the battery will probably be nearly dead, so that's holding me back a bit.

I tried running import Database.Datalog and that won't work.

I don't know the details about the permissions surrounding Chrome plugins.

I have been tooold that hackers/spammers/marketers target plugins. They buy up popular plugins and then insert malicious code.

So, I would be careful about which plugins you choose to install.

but I mean even a Pentium 4 can software-decode 720p Hi10 video without much problems, anything on the market today except notebook stuff ought to be able to software-decode 1080p H.264

Anyone here have any experience with the Asus VX239H? I purchased one recently since the reviews were mostly positive, but I can't seem to get the colours/brightness to the right setting, my shitty 15 inch laptop screen looks better in comparison. I've calibrated it countless times but it just never seems right, either too dark, too washed out or the colours are off.

Is it possible my one is defective? Or is this just what I get for spending under $500 for an IPS?

I wouldn't know the exact minimum. But really almost anything would work. My pc is 6 or more years old and it can play 1080p. And it was far from bleeding-edge when bought.
Even shitty laptops can do it now; hardware gets cheaper and I'd say virtually all integrated vidyacards are good enough for that.
I'd try to advise him tho that building one has got heavier advantages. It's generally cheaper, it feels gut, it's easier to replace its things, and you can hit on the exact amount of resources you're aiming for. Prebuilt ones will swing about the minimum you want more pronouncedly.
>>
>>58657661

I doubt ublock would do something like that, but I guess anything is possible.

Before I install plugins, I usually read through the comments and Google their reputation. After installing, sometimes I also look at web traffic using the developer console to see if they are sending extra requests. If everything looks good, I feel safe enough to use the plugin.

I did a quick Google search on ublock. It looks like there was a fake one. Make sure you didn't accidentally install that,

I don't know shit all about monitors or screen calibration, but I got a new Ultrabook that's touchscreen which is pretty high end.
The thing is, while it looks fantastic for media, when I put it next to my old Laptop which doesn't have a touchscreen there's a distinct yellow-ish tint on pages such as Google which have a white background.

I think I've had this same issue with a previous touchscreen machine, is this just how they are? It looks great for most things but the whites just seem off.

I've reduced the red and green in Windows calibration and that has made it better, but I'm playing with settings I don't understand so don't know if what I've done is really even a good idea

Any ideas?

This guy gets it.

I was also wondering how in the blazes to hook up my old Dell 5.1 system to my z170 mobo because some of the plugs do not match up to my motherboard (no soundcard)

I'm not sure what the old plugs were but I think one changed from a yellow to orange, likely the sub one.
So from what I can see the inputs are black, yellow, and light green; while my mobo's inputs are black, orange, light green and blue/pink for mic stuff.
Pic related, pretty much what I've got

I'm assuming reducing the red and green basically gives the same effect as boosting the blue light, is it a good idea? Lets say I set up an extended ACL with the properties: "deny ip 172.168.5.0 0.0.0.255 host 192.168.1.15"

And I put that on the interface G0/1 which the 172.168.5.0 network is connected to. If I have a VLAN (let's say the 172.168.20.0 network) attached to the subinterface G0/1.20, will the ACL I placed on the G0/1 interface prevent the VLAN network/hosts on the subinterface from communicating with the host denied in the ACL?

My condolences, no clue really other than I've heard there are other ways to open the windows iso and 'slipstream' the needed drivers and other essential programs into the installer itself.
I hope that's a guess in the right direction at least. I had spend almost a whole day fighting with mine until I remembered the shit from my other post, using the mobo utility for the needed drivers.
>>
>>58658927
>>58658920
If you just use your SSD for boot/OS, I'd recommend a fresh install. Move anything not OS related to your storage drive and install clean. thta way you won't have any trouble with missing/wrong drivers.

A clean install of Windows doesn't take very long for an SSD these days

>>58659950
Alright, then go back to mint and open the terminal. Type

sudo ntfsfix /dev/sdXY

where XY is the partition (i.e. sda2 or sdb1). You can see a list of partitions by entering

sudo blkid

The ones you're after will probably be ntfs or exfat. Then enter

sudo mount -o rw /dev/sdXY

So I run Ubuntu GNOME 16.04, and I like it a lot, but I'm running into some problems that can be a little annoying.

1. I use Anthy for my Japanese IME, but it won't output Japanese characters in Firefox. It works fine in literally anything else. I also tried Mozc, but it didn't output Japanese anywhere.

2. Firefox's file picker for downloads can only access my home, Desktop, and Downloads folders. If I want to save to anywhere else - say, my Pictures folder - I have to save it to Downloads first and manually cut/paste it.

3. If I leave Firefox open for more than a minute or so, the sound stops working in anything else until I restart. If I open Firefox while I have something else playing sound, it'll work until it drops and picks sound up again - for instance, Rhythmbox will finish one song fine, but the sound won't work for the next one.

What I'm saying is I don't know a good way to do it all in one step. Keeping your 7 license is just a matter of getting the key

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

Once you've installed 10 it will have it's own license permanently paired to the hardware.

>>58660970
Your HDD is just files, so you don't need to change it at all. If you have nothing of value on the SSD, you can just delete all partitions on it during setup and just let windows handle the rest.

I play the vidya. Yes, yes, I know, >>>/v/. I also program in C and Fortran, if it helps.

Anyways, looking for a new GPU. 480 8GB and 1060 6GB are both the same price in my shithole country. I'm leaning towards the 480 because of how well it's been maturing, to the point where it's currently slightly faster than the 1060. I don't really care about Physx (ded), Ansel, Shadowplay or any of the secondary features, I just care about raw power and physical quality since I just play muh gaymes and don't stream or anything.

I'll be playing on a triple 1080p setup (probably).

So, first off, if you've got a logical and compelling reason to draw me towards buying a 1060, I'd be grateful to hear it.

Second, what's the best 480 variant? The diference between them all is negligable here, and the ROG Strix OC version is actually one of the cheapest. It looks like the beefiest cooler and does direct VRM cooling too, but I don't know about Asus quality control. RMA's here are a pain in the everloving ass and might not actually be possible if something does happen to break.

Question regarding OOP in general, dunno if I should try dpt, but here goes nothing:
I have a project to do and I have to create a system of sort for bets.
Let's say I create a class bet. I create instances for bet whether they are valid, pre existing or invalid bets (e.g. the user doesn't have enough funds). I was wondering should I use this particular class for every bet in general or should make derived classes for the different "status" of every bet. In the same sense though, a verified bet is a bet, a type of bet, no?
My argument for property was the same, but I was also thinking the fact that I can use polymorphism, overloading, virtuality in some cases if I make subclasses (cases in which the same can be done with control flow too with the property method) which is cleaner.
Don't get me wrong I haven't already made up my mind, derived classes will make things more complex too.

I was looking for an english audio track to the movie chevalier and google stumbled over this.

What the fuck is this, I'm genuinely curious

http://www.bellyupspa.com/chevalier-2015-english-clean-audio-torrent-download/

Did somebody hijack their site and install these additional links to movie audio tracks?

Is the company that made the site for them a pissed off at them/a scam and they added additional hidden advertisements on this site?

Or is the site attempting to 'camouflage' itself as a nonexistent spa so that it won't be taken down as easily?

Was this section of the site designed by a human or did a bot rip elements from a torrent site and paste them here but switch the links to malware? Is there a virus going around trying to hack into small business websites and introducing this shit so that it gets clicks from google and spreads itself?

obviously not downloading that shit.

>>58661665
It really depends if it will be useful to you from a programming and database perspective, if there will be additional methods or properties you may want to store on them depending on the state, and if that will be worth the additional effort it will take to do simple things like have a unique and unchangeable Id for bets regardless of their state.

Built a new computer, used old case and old GPU for 2 weeks or so, had no problems, then I changed the case and took out the GPU, since I wanted to sell my old build
Now running on iGPU through DP, screen sometimes flickers/artifacts and goes black, with distortion sounds, any ideas what the problem could be ? The CPU, the mobo, the cable, the monitor or what ?
I've used the 3dguru program to uninstall previous drivers, installed the newest intel drivers from their site
No real indication on when the screen starts doing that shit
Also could a shitty electrical installation cause this, since I'm a student and renting a cheap flat, yet these problems never occurred b4

Just cruising along on my shitbox and noticed this little guy for sale still sealed in the antistatic bag. It's an Intel DH55TC. They want 30 shekels. I'm wanting to set up a dedicated server so I'm not running my main machine 24/7. So 2 questions. Are the integrated graphics going to have problems transcoding and shit for simple things like plex? Or is that more cpu intensive? Next question, on intels spec page for raid they just list n/a. Does that mean that this board is incapable of any raid configuration? I always thought that it would be more on the software side as long as you have the avalible sata ports?

>>
>>58662789
Transcoding is all CPU unless you've got a modern GPU that can do it in hardware (but software still does better quality).For Intel integrated that was introduced one generation later, so CPU only for you.

Can't do BIOS based RAID, so if you want RAID you can't boot from it if you're running Windows. Any other OS is fine.

What's your main machine?

I got a new monitor after like 5 years, but the colors were very yellow when I got it.

So I went into windows color calibration and fixed it, but it doesn't transfer into the games I'm playing, I know for CS:GO there is a command which I use, but it doesn't transfer to other games I play obviously.

Is there a way to force the color switch into all games or something? My monitor doesn't really have a lot of color change options on it so I have to go through software. I can only really change contrast, or if it's warm or cool.
>>

I've OC to 4.6 GHz.
With only 1.15 volt.
On the internet people have like 1.2+ all over the place. Like 1.25 or even 1.3

But mine is seemingly smooth with just 1.15.
I even think I could go lower volt or higher clock.
But I've read somewhere about too low voltages are damaging in the long run.
Did I win CPU lottery?
My temps never go over 65C on load and I only have 212 EVO.

This is what I used for what you said when I was in college. I got it for next to nothing since it's an old 2009 model and there's plenty of cheap parts for replacements. It's well documented for pretty much any Linux distro and runs Windows fine. I got mine for like 150$. Worked absolutely great. I wouldn't buy a modern MacBook though.

omg, it worked after restarting my PC. i dunno if the restart specifically was what did that (the entire time between the restart and now i was fucking around on my tablet, until randomly checking PC again), but it loads now.

I even closed my browser (it yielded the same results in both Firefox and Brave browser) and ran CCleaner and gelbooru still couldn't load. I even found another porn site I don't want to name since they steal artwork couldn't load on desktop either, but could on mobile just as gelbooru. But pornhub is the normie meme porn site and it could load on both desktop and mobile for me, and the above two sites which suffer the same fate as each other aren't related at all- one is eastern, one is western and a company.

anyway i sorta lost my train of thought, dunno why this happened, happy it fixed itself. Just wanted to throw further insight into the circumstances for context or something...

I have an issue with scraping dynamic pages (Discord chat) with Selenium and Beautifulsoup. I'm able to do everything fine but right now its checking every record with "INSERT OR IGNORE" and I'm doing a shit load of excess computing.

Code:

driver.get(URL)
while 1==1:
time.sleep(60)
chat_page = driver.page_source
chat_soup = BeautifulSoup(chat_page,'lxml')
messages = chat_soup.findAll('div', attrs={'class':'message first'})
for message in messages:
username = message.div.h2.span.strong.text
text = message.find('div', attrs={'class':'markup'}).get_text()
timestamp = message.find('span', attrs={'class':'timestamp'}).get_text()
today = str(datetime.date.today())
timestamp = timestamp.replace('Today', today)

usernames.append(username)
timestamps.append(timestamp)
texts.append(text)
print(timestamp, username," : ",text)

Current shitty work-around:

driver.get(URL)
while 1==1:
chat_page = driver.page_source
chat_soup = BeautifulSoup(chat_page,'lxml')
messages = chat_soup.findAll('div', attrs={'class':'message first'})
for message in reversed(messages):
username = message.div.h2.span.strong.text
usernames.append(username)
text = message.find('div', attrs={'class':'markup'}).get_text()
text = text.replace('"', '')
text = text.replace("'", "")
username = username.replace('"', '')
username = username.replace("'", "")
timestamp = message.find('span', attrs={'class':'timestamp'}).get_text()
today = str(datetime.date.today())
timestamp = timestamp.replace('Today', today)
isbot = message.find('span', attrs={'class':'bot-tag'})
if (isbot):
username = '(BOT) ' + username
sql = '''INSERT OR IGNORE INTO 'chats' ('timestamp', 'username', 'text') VALUES ("%s", "%s", "%s")''' % (timestamp, username, text)
conn.executescript(sql)

apparently very, frequency being more important than latency(I think) therefore buy the highest frequency your chipset can have and then compare ram sticks with that frequency to have the lowest latency

Does the packages list in Windows 10 refresh somehow?

I mean, using the command "get-appxpackage" in PowerShell I can get list of "apps" packages installed in the system and use "remove-appxpackage" to uninstall certain ones. However. while I tested it out at work PC, apps removed that way (like Xbox one) does vanish from Start Menu but still appear when I list them with "get-appxpackage" command.

This is not a stupid question but I have to post this because I need help.
I've got a laptop that can't boot anymore into Windows, it dropped while I was using it so I thought it's surely the HDD.
I'm planning on installing Lubuntu (or any other distro that you recommend) and keep it on an USB drive (I know how to do that).
Then I want to see if I can access my Windows drive and HDD, I have really important files in there that I can't afford to loose, and I don't have any backup.
The problem is I have no experience with Linux, I guess that I'll have to some advanced shit on the terminal in order to do that but I don't know anything, the only command that I know is Screenfetch.
I don't know this if it's appropriate to post this here but whatever, I'm not a /g/ guy.

Yes, but especially if they actually stop a surge. Its worth spending a fraction of the cost of your expensive electronics to get a nice 3000 Joule surge protector and think about tossing them if they actually get triggered. Each brand and quality has different life expectancy, but 8 years probably well past the warranty.

Cousin asked if i could fix his notebook. The problem is that the windows never goes past the loading windows screen. When it does, it goes straight to the "rapair start-up tool". Itried to use every single tool that windows has to repair, and with every distro i've too(win10, win7, win8.1). But none seens to work, it always gets stuck at some point.
Using Linux distros i was able to recover some data from it, but wasn't able to format the disk to install windows once again.
Hell, i even tried to install every distro i've (the linux ones too) but none seems to works. It always gets stuck in the detecting file systems or the formatting hard drive part.
Is there something else i could do or is this HD dead already? I've opened the notebook to check if the thing was connected. For fucks sake, i even tried it on others computers but the same thing everywhere.

Note: He said it started to show this problem once he "slaped" the notebook to see if the mousepad would work again, lifting the notebok 10cm from his bed. Is this enough to kill it since it was on and running the OS?

Just trying to figure if i missed some procedure or this is the end for that HD.

once you think you've got as much as it can get, then mount that image read-only (mount -o ro) and pull your files off that way
if it's unmountable, try "ntfsfix"
if it's /still/ unmountable, try "testdisk"
