I did not touch advanced partition tool whatever it was called. It was chosen by the installer.

>on't do anything which will fuck you up.
Like what? Only thing I did was to connect the installer to my wi-fi, then just click install, set my user name and password.

I did not even open advanced partition tool.

But this is besides the point that why is there an options menu if you can't even do anything with it.

Some disk's firmware set a read-only mode when the disk is damaged.
so:
1) test the disk on another system
2) post the output of smartctl:
sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdb

3) also post the output:
dmesg | grep -i sdb

4) _unmount_ the disk and run a fsck:
sudo fsck -f /dev/sdb

I just installed Arch Linux from antergos after using mint for the last two years.

The problem I have is that firefox doesnt seem to display any fonts of its menus including bookmarks, the address bar, the right click menu etc.

Chromium works perfectly fine and I use it to currently post in this thread.

I already reinstalled firefox and tried without importing my profile and used both the refresh and start with addons disabled options from the troubleshooting page since those are the only parts of the page I can use but that had no efffect whatsoever.

I haven't followed the discussion. Would you mind posting a summary?

> How is the disk mounted?
> If it's in /etc/fstab can you copypaste the line from there here?
> What type of drive is it?
> Which user "owns" the drive, and what permissions are set on it?

Especially that last one. If it's set up to be owned by McFuckyourface, and to be written to by noone, then guess what, either you're McFuckyourface or you're not writing. (Or you're root.)

The last one is easy as shit to test though. Just start nautilus as root, mount it, and see if you can write. If that is the case, then your user doesn't have access to it.

it is implied that you should install some fonts after the system installation:

Also, Manjaro doesn't have old packages. It works the same way like on other distros for example Debian: Manjaro has a stable, testing and unstable branche, whereas unstable is as fresh as Arch, stable is older, since only stuff that works goes in there.

I'm very confused about the GNU/Linux naming thing. Very, very, confused.
So I have some questions to be able to understad it. If you can help me I'll really apreciate that.
1- Is linux just a kernel or also a OS?
2- Can a SO use the linux kernel without the GNU software?
3- Is there any SO like that?
4- Do software that work on GNU/Linux distros, work in a OS with linux kernel but wihout the GNU part?
5- Do software that work on GNU/Hurd distros, work in GNU/Linux distros and vice versa?
6- Does GNU/Hurd and/or the non GNU OS with linux kernel use the same commands in the terminal?
7- Do GNU/Hurd and/or the non GNU OS with linux kernel use the same commands in the terminal that GNU/Linux?
8- Do GNU/Hurd and/or the non GNU OS with linux kernel have the same file tree ash GNU/Linux (I mean that of /home/user/.. etc)?
I don't know if the questions are stupid, and if they're I'm sorry for that. I've not computer knowlegde and I'm starting to use Linux for a master's degree in bioinformatics, and I'm very confused about this.
Thank you a lot.

>>58648623
Well, Linux is a kernel, a kernel is an OS, GNU is a set of programs, libs, shell, etc, which is also an OS, both GNU and Linux are operating systems, both incomplete. Together they make a full OS. You don't need GNU to make Linux work and you don't need Linux to make GNU work. GNU/Linux is just the most popular combination.

Of course you cannot write *nix filesystems' root directory as a normal user you bwaka.

You can create a directory on the drive, chown it to your users and chmod it to be writeable. Then you can write it as normal user.

Not a single distro is UNIX certified.

They're all "unix-like" because it's cheaper (unix cert costs money) and you don't have to autistically adhere to some made up standard.

on a UNIX system vi should call for vi
a Unix-like system is EXPECTED (but doesn't have to) to have vi which is in most cases linked to something like vim -C (debian carries vim-tiny) simply for the purpose of not messing with the user.

>Even in compatibility mode, Vim is not entirely compatible with vi as defined in the Single Unix Specification and POSIX (e.g., Vim does not support vi's open mode, only visual mode).

Quick question.

If I am on debian wheezy and the latest package for qBittorrent is 2.9.*, and I want to install the latest version from the jessie repo, could I simply download the .deb and install it with dpkg -i ...

debian wheezy is no longer supported by the debian team, but by a separate team of volunteers under the guise of Long Term Support.

It would be a good idea to upgrade since in a few months jessie will become old-stable.

As for your question, if you want qbittorrent from jessie just use backports. It's guaranteed to not cause any dependency problems.

Also I don't know why that anon said ~/.steam
I don't think that's the default.

It should probably be inside .local instead. But also, I wouldn't just go editing steams default skin. Instead I would recommend you read this file:
>~/.local/share/Steam/skins/skins_readme.txt
to create your own skin for steam with the font you wanted (It's a lot easier than it sounds, you basically just copy the default skin and modify the font line. The readme explains how to do it).
Then you just go into steam settings and select your skin to apply it

`wait' is useful when you have a background process and you want to wait for it.

For example:
sleep 5 & cowsay "sleep is doing stuff"; wait $!; echo done

While sleep is doing stuff in the background, you can do other things, but at some point wait till sleep is over.

The "stable" package system means that you only get stable packages from apt, but it basically doesn't stop you from installing programs like FF nightly manually.

That said, why not Debian testing? It's just some weeks older than upstream, so you don't cut your hands from the edge, but also have fresh shit. Debian Stable makes only sense for complete newbs or servers IMHO.

$EDITOR has nothing to do with /etc/sudoers.tmp, the visudo binary opens /etc/sudoers and then opens /etc/sudoers.tmp and writes the sudoers contents to it.

If you confirm that /etc/sudoers contains text and /etc/sudoers.tmp doesn't then outside of a permission problem I don't see how that could be possible.

not really, VISUAL is usually checked first on every program, since VISUAL refers to the visual editor, usually vi, vim, etc. EDITOR is obviously the editor, doesn't need to be a visual editor. If a program wants you to use a visual text editor, it asks explicitly for VISUAL.

CentOS only has kdm as its display manager (unless you use a third party repository or compile it, of course) and KDE takes forever to start for the first time, I don't even know why they include KDE packages at all if they aren't working with perfect integration of one or the other. Since Red Hat loves GNOME, might as well stick with that. Totem and dragonplayer are the only video players that comes in the Everything iso, neither of them seems to detect gstreamer.

It is a good distro if you like, and use, GNOME (it shows icons on desktop by default and it has the same menus as GNOME2). The basic applications being: thunderbird (evolution takes too much space of the screen), firefox ESR (no chromium), libreoffice, and gimp are available with no need for external repositories. It identified my wireless device with not issues and I have not found problems regarding display, but if you use NVIDIA or AMD, expect hassle like in every other distro.

>Get mint

Linux Mint has many problems:

Linux Mint mixes Ubuntu and Debian packages
Due to the mix of Debian and Ubuntu packages, when an update is released that breaks Mint, the maintainers blacklist it until it works again, even if it is a security upgrade. (Note: they don't try to fix it, they just blacklist it)
Mint doesn't publish CVEs, and you can't check if you are vulnerable because you don't know where a certain package came from.
When one of their packages has the same name as a upstream package, they block the package and replace it with theirs. For example, the package mdm contains Utilities for single-host parallel shell scripting, however, in Linux Mint (and only Linux Mint), the mdm package is the Mint Display Manager(aka a clone of gdm).
Security updates are optional.
By default, using the Update Manager, you won't get updates for critical parts of the system(xorg, systemd, kernel), even security updates.
The use of old kernels means that newer hardware isn't supported

You will probably have a better time with Ubuntu(or any other distro) MATE or by installing Cinnamon on Ubuntu(we really need a Ubuntu Cinnamon Spin) than with Linux Mint.

So, can we stop recommending Linux Mint to beginners? Because they will run into much more problems than with any other distro and will get the wrong image of what a (good) Linux distro should be.

I want to try Arch, I have been using Ubuntu MATE for about six weeks. Unbuntu 16.04 has shit package support for Steam.
>>
>>58654941
they support literally only ubuntu and steam os (as deb based system) and don't really care (i.e. take any responsibility) for other ubuntu-based distro.

Now, If you look at the script you are executing there is a function called "os_release":
function os_release() {
[[ -r /etc/os-release ]] && . /etc/os-release

case "$ID" in
ubuntu)
PACKAGES="amdgpu-pro amdgpu-pro-lib32 amdgpu-pro-dkms"
;;
steamos)
PACKAGES="amdgpu-pro-driver amdgpu-pro-lib32 "`
`"glx-alternative-amdgpu-pro amdgpu-pro-dkms"
;;
*)
echo "Unsupported OS" | stderr
exit 1
;;
esac
}

Basically it opens the file "/etc/os-release" and if the variable "ID" in this file contains the word "ubuntu" or "steamos" it select certain packages to install and proceed. In your os-release file the first line will be ID=elementary so it just print that error and exit.
Since elementary is basically ubuntu with very little differences, if you are confident with that you can "skip" this check and simply replace "ubuntu" with "elementary" in said function:
function os_release() {
[[ -r /etc/os-release ]] && . /etc/os-release

case "$ID" in
elementary)
PACKAGES="amdgpu-pro amdgpu-pro-lib32 amdgpu-pro-dkms"
;;
steamos)
PACKAGES="amdgpu-pro-driver amdgpu-pro-lib32 "`
`"glx-alternative-amdgpu-pro amdgpu-pro-dkms"
;;
*)
echo "Unsupported OS" | stderr
exit 1
;;
esac
}

and the run the script again.

Is there any better feeling?
>>
>>58655167
why is steam shilling ubuntu?
>>
>>58655288
there are a lot of distro which are ubuntu with different default settings and installed packages and maybe separate repos.
Those distro are said to be "ubuntu-based".
>>
>>58655301
yeah, realizing you fell for the meme and installing a superior distro
>>
>>58655316
they are shilling their own version of ubuntu called "steamos".
On their website they refer at linux games as "games for linux/steamOS".

NIgga you can have the entire fucking repo installed and it wont matter
>>
>>58655301
When you realized you're finally at the end of your distro journey, and you can go back to using a normal, functional, distro like debian or ubuntu.
>>
>>58655376
And the system didn't crash :D
>>
>>58655395
Why not just dual boot then?

you may as well say "and you can go back to a normal os like window" at this point
>>
>>58655450
You could but why. Once you realize that using arch is a lot of trouble with no benefits or purpose you probably won't use it anymore. Unless you're a hobbyist or something like that.
>>
>>58655473
You're not fooling anyone but yourself anon...
You've wasted your time working on shit that doesn't matter

it have its benefits. I like the rolling release model and the really updates repos.
It also gives you some tools (like abs) to easily rebuild certain packages if you want to modify some compile options when you need it.
For example, I sometimes need to run virtual machine with 3d virtio acceleration, and I like to use the spice protocol as "remote" display.
Can you do that in ubuntu right now? you can't without manually updating xorg-xserver, spice and qemu and maybe other things.
Actually you can't in arch either because you need to install the development version of spice and recompile qemu against it. It would be boring stuff to do but with the arch building system I did that without any hassle (except maybe waiting for qemu to compile) and with all the convenience of having "customized" packages managed by your distro package manager.

Your overly complicated bullshit pet OS is not viable to normal people in the real world.

How the fuck are you going to fix this? Please let me know by 2020.

Sincerely, Win 7 user.

I updated last night and now my system won't load. Instead I get a message saying recovering journal. Is there a way to repair this without reinstalling my entire OS?
