rutracker has a fuckton of users though, which works well because a torrent is pretty much healthy as long as it has ~5 seeders, regardless of the # of downloaders. Having more users ensures that more torrents get healthy seed #'s. If we had stats on what % of content the average person continues seeding, I'd bet good money that ratio-based private trackers have more dedicated seeders, which is important because letting everyone into/having high user counts on private trackers is how you get targeted by anti-piracy groups.

I'm not the person you originally replied to but yes in general the major problem with any tracker is retention. A minimum seed-time requirement is a good way to increase retention but it's ironically less flexible than a ratio-based system. Say the seed time req is 6 months. Okay, now that my seed time is up, why should I continue seeding it? Bonus points? for what? What happens if I lose the data or something goes wrong within the 6 months? How long should it take before I'm declared as a HnR'er?

BTN has a good system but unfortunately it only works because it has a lot of users and (relatively) not a lot of content. It's similar to me opening a "Only 24bit vinyl rips of Pink Floyd records" tracker and inviting 60k people. Am I really going to be worried about retention? Now change it so there's 750k torrents and 20k users. Now each user is practically expected to seed 37.5 torrents in order for everything to be at least "alive" and hopefully at least 187.5 to reach 5 seeders per torrent aka what I'd consider "healthy."

BTN otoh has 192k torrents and 35k users, which means each user is expected to seed 5.5 torrents to be "alive" and 27.5 to be "healthy." I could make a pretty vague conclusion that it's about ~7x harder to maintain good retention on PTH than it is on BTN, so a more strict system that makes people not only seed more but *want* to seed more is more attractive. There are also external factors and I've made this way simpler than it actually is but I'm trying to make a point that it's not a one-size-fits-all "it worked on rutracker so why can't it work on something that's extremely different?"
