Continuing Kaby Lake Awareness Edition

Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.

Gaming builds based monitor resolution and refresh rate
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/pcbg/saved/

>To activate the Description, select build from sidebar then click on the title over the parts list
>Description contains notes, other options, and build skeleton for easy customization / cost savings
>Note: Win7 and 8.1 cannot be installed on a Kaby Lake system

Have a budget, but don't know where to start? This will recommend you a parts list based on price.
http://www.logicalincrements.com/

>OUTDATED CPU RECOMMENDATIONS (no mention of Kaby Lake)
>Subsitute a G4560 with 2400MHz RAM for the i3-6100 in any build; same performance, half the price.
>Consider substituting an i5 7500 for the i3 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any i3 or locked i5 build without a Z mobo
>Consider a B150/B250 or H110/H210 mobo for any i3 build
>Add a 240GB SSD to the "Great" tier build

Kaby Lake has been released! Skylake is depreciated if corresponding chips are similarly priced (e.g., i5 7600K vs i5 6600K)!
>Some motherboards will have a one-click, 5GHz on air OC button that works for 80% of i5 7600Ks
>100 series chipsets (Z170, B150, ect) don't work out of the box with Kaby Lake
>Z series chipsets have an "Enhanced Turbo", which allows all cores to run at the highest single core boost clockspeed (works for Skylake CPUs as well)
>Pentiums now have hyperthreading, and are thus the new default budget / entry level gaming CPUs
>Pentium G4560 is the best price / perf four thread CPU on a modern platform
>All Kaby Lake CPUs work natively with 2400MHz DDR4 memory
>Do not underestimate the impact of fast (>2400, e.g, 3000MHz) RAM in conjunction with a Z series chipset, which often provides as much of a performance boost as a CPU overclock
>>
>>58625217
Are you actually stupid?

>Asus released a new BIOS said to hit offer a one-button 5.0GHz solution that works with 80 per cent of Kaby Lake processors.

I just build my pc before kaby lake was released with what I thought was a nice shiny sky lake i7 6700k and I now feel cheated and annoyed.

The chips are basically the same. Just flash your BIOS with the Kaby Lake update for better turbo

>Our Skylake-based Core i5 6600K overclocks nicely enough to 4.5GHz, but the new Kaby Lake chip offers rock-solid stability at 4.8GHz with the possibility of hitting over 5.0GHz with air-cooling.
Can you not read? Literally one sentence above the one I previously quoted.

Would flashing bios on a H170 board with a skylake CPU improve anything at all ? Is it worth doing ? Never done it b4 so not sure about the whole thing alltogether

>possibility
>can't even do it
>asus claims to do it with 80% of LGA1151 CPUs
Like what asus claimed is already confirmed as a lie, just wait until they explain the specific of the "5GHz button"
Because taking that as it is, assuming it works on "80%" of CPUs while real overclockers can't barely reach that with a few specific chips and a few specific coolers
But I mean 80% of LGA1151 CPUs now do 5GHz on "air" so it's gotte be true, can't argue with asus
>>
>>58625314
>80% is 100%
>>
>>58625368
80% of Kaby lake CPUs cannot do 5GHz on air
Why does asus think the opposite?
>>
>>58625379
>80% of LGA1151 CPUs
Doesn't say that, moron. The quotes says "Kaby Lake processors" of which only two can be officially OC'd, the i5 7600K and the i7 7700K

>>58625393
Clearly they're not talking about locked CPUs, autismo boy
>>
>>58625366
Probably not, maybe. Most the improvement is related to overclocking, which H170 cannot do. Check to see whether the H270s have the new Enhanced Turbo, about which there is very little info.

Any bronze PSU with four 6+2 pin power connectors. I don't know why you'd want to SLI 770s. You can sell them for 125 a piece and get a more power single card that doesn't need so much power

Depends on what you'd use it for. Shitposting? Games only? Intensive computing software?
You can do it with $500, but you can't have all the capability, like if you want games you'll probably need to settle for a weak CPU, if you process and render you might want to leave out a GPU
Logical increments was pretty much spot-fucking-on with my build, but I have a $1200 PC, not sure how good the cheaper tiers are

as for PSU I didn't want to be cheap as I leave my PC for long periods of time

Do you mean ITX or MATX? Both are pretty dank and more practical than full ATX in my opinion. I have a build in the Node 304 and I'm actually getting better temps in it in the Define R5. If I were to add a GPU, it would have direct filtered access to cool air.

>>
>>58629591

I mean, is 1440p at the moment an intermediate step to 4k?

like, a friend told me 4k might not be worth it for another 4 years, is this true?
>>
>>58629591

also, are TN monitors fine?
>>
>>58629661
1440p is just an overpriced meme for richfags to spend money on. Sure it looks better than 1080p but 4k is an even better jump. 4k will eventually become the new standard for all content, Netflix is already supporting some 4k streaming, so is YouTube. Its only a matter of time.

Just if you want to game I would suggest going for a higher refresh rate before a higher resolution.
>>
>>58629712
Yeah TN is fine. Viewing angles is a meme, not like you won't be sitting in front of it 99.99% of the time. Also TN has lower response time.

The only thing IPS has going for it is color correctness. That only matters if you are a 'professional' who needs that for work. Its just another marketing buzzword.

I improved on that list, in my opinion.
Keep in mind, you will probably have to buy a monitor, and a Windows liscence (unless you use a free OS like ubuntu or whatver). You can cheap out on the Windows by buying it from a gray market vendor, like Kinguin. Here's a guide:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXTqz3Fd28M&

If visual quality isn't the most important thing to you, I recommend going to a local pc repair shop. They usually have shitloads of half decent 720p or 1600x900 resolution monitors for really cheap. Also goodwill/ savers ect.

Assuming you are going from old i5 -> new i5, proooobably not, unless you really want to overclock heavily. The 7600k can hit 5ghz a lot of the time without too much of a fuss. Performance will improve but not by a whole ton. You certainly won't be blown away.
AMD Ryzen comes out somewhere in February, will probably be easily purchasable in mid-late March. It could be a massive upgrade, but we don't know what they plan on doing with pricing. Wait at least until the Ryzen reviews are out.

I've been wanting to turn my current rig into a mATX rig, but since it's impossible to find motherboards nowdays that supports Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs I might as well buy a new PC.

Looking to get a budget and portable mATX build for content creation and 1080p gaming that will perform as good or better than my current rig from 2013 with a i5 3570k and HD7850, and I'm going to reuse the 2TB internal HDD and 64GB SSD from my current rig. You could save money by not getting such an expensive power supply. All the platinum stuff means is it uses more power, either way your pc gets the same amount, it just uses a bit more from the wall to get it.

Intel's i5 product differentiation is entirely artificial. They disable hyperthreading for that reason solely, product differentiation. I think we're going to see a lot of changes in Intel's lineup. Cannon Lake for instance will have 6 core consumer i7s, and they already gave all the Pentiums hyperthreading.

So we're likely to see a huge price/perf jump in future Intel refreshes

Doubt it. Not without competition from Zen, which of course they had 'intel' on long before the tech press did.

Sup /g/, built my PC today. Only took a couple hours to get everything up and running and everything works perfectly. I used these threads and other online resources for putting together a decent budget build. Here's what I got:

>Intel Core i3-6100
>MSI B150M PRO-VDH motherboard
>8GB DDR4-2133 RAM
>MSI AMD Radeon RX 470 ARMOR OC 4GB
>SK hynix SL308 120GB SSD
>Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB

Got a good deal with a combo on the processor and motherboard, presumably in part because Intel's got some new processors now. Didn't really need more than this performance-wise, so instead of bumping up the CPU or GPU I went for a good case and PSU that I could reuse in the future.

>Fractal Design Define Mini C
>Seasonic M12II Bronze 520W

Having a good case and fully modular power supply really made for a pleasant first build experience, though I obviously don't have anything to compare it to. Regardless, it was nice and I'm glad I made that choice.

Installed Ubuntu 16.10 and everything is working perfectly.

Is there any reason to go Kany/Win 10 or can I just tick to Sky/Win 7 for another 5+ years?

I have some questions for my gaming pc:

Will getting an i7 make MATLAB and other data processing software faster over an i5?

I'm not from the USA so the other PSU available is a 550W with bronze rating. Which one is more power-efficient?

Will everything fit?
>>
>>58641750
Gold is slightly more efficient than bronze. You can google the ratings.
I'd go with the 550W
the i7 will probably help with data processing, but there may not be a noticeable improvement, depending on workload
Get 3000MHz RAM
Drop to 1070

>>58641515
Low end, the Kaby Lake Pentiums are a huge value proposition
Kaby Lake i5s and i7 aren't that different from Skylake

>>58641374
Need Z270 for Kaby Lake to work out of the box
Can drop 8GB of RAM
Can drop to a 6GB 1060

>>58641387
Not that I know of, but that doesn't mean there isn't
>>
>>58642124
why drop from 1080 to 1070?, is it a bottle neck or the better performance/money ratio?
>>
>>58642124
>Kaby Lake i5s and i7 aren't that different from Skylake

except how the heat up much more, and can't run on windows 7
>>
>>58642158
Yeah, 1080 is only 20% faster slower than the 1080

>>58642205
Would you stop?
>>
>>58642281
ebin, cant wait to show this to my pals at r/4chan
>>
>>58642281

>would you stop blowing me the fuck out

How about no?

Kaby is shit because of those 2 reasons, not to mention the fact it barely improves over Sky.
>>
>want to build a new PC
>have recently lost interest in PC gaming except shitty esports
It's not fucking fair.
>>
>>58641515

stick with Sky

microsoft are being cunts not making Windows 7 and 8.1 compatible with Sklakes because they want to further shill Windows 10

say fuck them and stick with sky
>>
>>58642429
>microsoft are being cunts not making Windows 7 and 8.1 compatible with Sklakes

meant to say Kaby Lakes
>>
>>58642429
>>58642446
Or just stick with sky because it won't burn your house down, performs the same, and is cheaper.
>>
>Kaby Lake is not compatible on Windows 7

Then wtf is this?

i7 is a needless upgrade compared to i5 unless you plan on doing multimedia work. You won't get any worthwhile performance difference in games.

The cooler is needless unless you're overclocking, which you don't really need to do these days, as games are heavily GPU bound (this is also the reason an i7 doesn't give huge performance gains over an i5 in games).
>>
I have a Sapphire RX 480 8GB and occasionally games will crash with green flickering then black screen, with buzzing audio.

Is the card fucked up or is it overheating or something? Or power issue? I have the latest drivers.

kek, I meant the 1080 is only 20% faster than the 1070.

>>58642365
First of all, the temperature issue is way overblown, affects a small number of chips, and has reached meme status because of the screeching of autists like you.

Secondly the fact that it has native support for 2400MHz RAM and higher stock clocks makes the hardware better.

Lastly if you want a real OS you should be on GNU/Linux anyway. You can Win7 or 10 in a VM for all your gayman needs

>>58642546
It works, but it can't be installed directly as of yet. At least the required drivers etc aren't in some neat little guide somewhere.

>>58642728

So I just saw benchmarks that show the 1070 losing to a budget card (480)

Can anyone explain this? Is Nvidia really making bad cards?

>>58643269
RE7 is an outlier. Only one website has anything up yet as far as I can see.
>>

RE7 doesn't even use dx12, which nvidia is optimized on. not surprising.

>The single biggest new feature of DirectX 12 is a change to the 3D graphics portion - called Direct3D - that will greatly increase the opportunity for developers to optimise their games for specific hardware

>>
>>58642936
Don't think so. I just ran a few games until it crashed. Green flicker and then black screen, then audio buzzes out.

>>58643055
I downloaded MSI afterburner to check, and it said my GPU temp at crash was 74C. No reason for it crashing heat-wise, at least. I'm not sure if it's a power issue, MOBO connection, or a bad card.

And? You're a fucking moron. That doesn't say anything about NVIDIA. Everyone who has spent five minutes looking into the matter knows that neither Maxwell or Maxwell 1.1 (Pascal) is great at DX12 because the arch doesn't have a hardware scheduler like GCN.

I've been getting some crashes recently on my Gigabyte G1 RX 470 at about ~77 - 79C while playing FC:P. The GPU load also drops to nothing a few times right before the crash. It's an immediate black screen, whereup my system reboots
>>
>>58643522
>>58643551

definitely a driver issue
>>
>>58643551
Mine flickers out green-black and then locks up, and sound goes out. Doesn't fix until I reboot my PC manually.

>>58643561
I just checked for driver updates though. Should I roll back or something? I heard the Sapphire RX480 was pretty good and when it's not crashing, it runs very quiet even at 65-75C. I'd be pissed if it was the motherboard since I only just finished building this PC.

I have the following parts that I got from my cousin when he upgraded his pc, my question is if I put a 1050 ti or similar card what games could I play and could this system handle 4k video playback? Also not sure what case to get, I have the rest of the parts listed.

You can play anything with the 1050Ti. Yes it can do 4K playback
