>he doesn't use GNU/Linux
Then why are you even on /g/? Go back to /v/ winbabbies, come back when you learn to use an operating system that doesn't use you
Also, Windows Hate Thread
I like your style, cartoonposter
Also, if anyone here is using winkek 10 should fuck off
>he uses a shitty UNIX clone written by a abominable fennoswede
just fucking end you'reself dumb jennyposter
People use it because it is free.
The software on unix were good enough so that was used as a base.
Now the world is a lot more complex.
Every program is no longer a filter.
The focus on being user friendly and easy to use has lead to a lot of applications for the gnu/linux system.
It is its own thing now.
where are all of you fags to shit on makiposting?
that doesn't make it any less of a clone at all, it still behaves similarly and runs a lot of the same non-core system software
The children are easily triggered and need their safe space...away from all those unapproved thoughts and ideas they personally don't like.
Said it many times before... Linux community keeps people the fuck away from Linux.
Windows users aren't welcome anywhere on this board.
Windows must be destroyed, and hope Bill Gates dies a horrible death, with his eyes gouged out and billions of tarantulas crawling out of his mouth.
>"please set up your Microsoft account"
>have to toggle 30 buttons to reduce data collection
>it doesn't even do anything, Microsoft still spies on you
back to >>>/v/ if you're dumb enough to use this software
How hard are you going to push your meme?
What's a good Linux distro to start with?
I've fucked around with Ubuntu before when I was younger, and it was pretty neat, but it couldn't run silverlight or steam at the time so I gave up on it.
Any good Linux 101 sites or books?
Windows is CANCER
Seriously it's Windows users who are ruining this board, bringing their /v/ gaymer shit here.
/g/ is not for gaming.
Anyone remotely interested in technology should not be using Windows
Partially false. I'm using Windows but I'm not even playing a lot of games,if almost no games. The reason for that is some tools that I use for flashing devices (MTK phone flash tool is an example) runs only under Windows.
Other than that, the ONLY game I actually have, which I don't EVEN play often,is Abe's Exoddus. That's the only game I play, since my interest in gaming slowly dies.
I'd use BSD, but it didn't work on my hardware (neither FreeBSD nor OpenBSD. Dunno if I fucked up but either way if I can't install it properly on the first go that's a big red flag for me (Gentoo/Arch were both easy to install). It seemed ok in a VM but didn't feel any real advantage over, say, Debian.
>flashing phones does not need windows.
MTK phones do. At least my cheap Samsung Galaxy S5 clone is based on a MTK6571 chipset. The tool that I used to reflash it is only available for Windows.
And phone posters are all the time using Android or iOS. I haven't seen a lot of people with Windows Phone, unless they're cucks that think nowadays Nokia is still cool shit, which isn't.
lel. Windows 10 is a keylogger. You might as well sent HTTP requests to the NSA and have them send you the response.
Windows 7 wasn't that bad
Windows XP wasn't that bad
Windows 98 wasn't that bad
The thing is, linux might be better than windows but that means jack shit if nobody makes software for it. Windows is easy to use, which is why it is widespread, which is why people make software for it.
I only use it for UNI. I dislike linux and think it's incredibly non-user friendly.
I'm not a retard nor am I bad at the terminal, I just think it's fucking retarded to not just create a fucking UI for your program in 2010+ to make it way more user friendly and give you a way better "overview" of the fucking task you're trying to do. Having to open the fucking manual for every program just to know the fucking commands is also a fucking chore and with a GUI you could just have textboxes and drop-down menus to have the same fucking commands.
I usually run Debian or Mint when I use linux.
I'll never switch to linux full-time before they fix the fucking "LETS DO EVERYTHING IN TERMINAL ;)" bullshit.
I agree with this. It's just needless masturbation. Terminal command were for a time where GUIs where non-existent or hard to make, not THE CURRENT YEAR.
Besides you're not even learning anything about "how computers work", you're just googling stuff and copying commands to the terminal.
That being said I really like Mint. I just think Linux in general, or at least the mainstream ones like Ubuntu/Mint need to move away from command line stuff as a regular thing. People wouldn't be so afraid of linux if they could solve stuff without the classic "have fun fixing this! ~$> "
The reason your university makes you do all of that shit is so you can do things like remote management of servers through ssh, and write shell programs to automate crappy stuff. Your class isn't teaching you the user-friendliness of Linux, it's teaching you the bare minimum of what you need to know to actually work in IT
The terminal is extremely powerful, much more powerful than any GUI could be. It gives you complete control.
Anyone who can't appreciate that shouldn't be using Linux anyway.
Terminal is used because it's much more stream lined than bloated unnecessary UI elements that make the screen "pretty". UI is needed if you can't keep track and simply don't know - there is a place for it but there is also a reason experienced users prefer command line.
Talk to any professional DBA and see if they use phpmyadmin to manager their shit or directly via command line. SSH for life.
No, by it's very nature it "dumbs down" the program.
One of the main reasons is scripting. You can't really script a GUI the same way you could a terminal based program.
Plus GUI's are pretty much bloat and just put an unnecessary layer in front of the program in exchange for "usability", which once you familiarize yourself with the terminal you'll see is not actually more usable at all.
The point of a GUI is to visually display things, if you wanted to create a GUI with the power of command prompt, that isn't itself just a text box for typing commands... It would be massive, have thousands of buttons, dropdowns, menus... It would look like shit and be way worse than using a terminal. It's like having everything on the system within reach, rather than at differing lengths away.
If you use a "user-friendly" distro like Ubuntu then you won't really have to use the terminal that much. They come with DEs that provide a graphical interface for nearly everything.
That is true, but there is no global rule against posting non anime images newfriend. You're trying too hard to fit in by sperging because this site was made for animé, only anime images are allowed
Idk, it might just have like cascading options, meaning you choose a command, and then dropdowns/checkboxes appear for flags, options etc.
Although for full functionality I guess it would indeed still be essentially a text prompt lol.
The mandatory windows 10 upgrade got stuck in a reboot loop one day when I was visiting them.
My dad wanted to bring the pc to best-buy tech support.
I had ubuntu running in 10min with all their files intact.
>The thing is, linux might be better than windows but that means jack shit if nobody makes software for it. Windows is easy to use, which is why it is widespread, which is why people make software for it.
This is the most profound and accurate argument in the thread.
I love Arch, use it on my laptop, but so long as I need windows exclusive mainstream software to run I just keep windows on my desktop.
If big name devs all made linux ports I'd end windows in a heartbeat.
no you didn't fuck up. The Devs either use chinkpads or Macs. It's best to assume that any other desktop/laptop hardware is not supported. But if you're using it on anything but a server you're retarded anyway
>Come back when you learn to use an operating system that doesn't use you
>Take care of other things
>Have to take care of it, remind everyone how superior you are for using it, place it as a main hobby, almost to the point Linux is using you
ITT: Butthurt faggots.
Like i give a fuck what operating system i'm using.
Who the fuck cares what OS you are using?
I use 3 OS daily
At work (i make server apps for collecting data at the end everything runs on a Linux server (ubuntu, arch whatever...))
t's easy to use.
On my laptop because i like vidya and runs practically everything.
It's easy to use, you learn to appreciate that when you have a lot of work. If you don't work as a developer or in IT, probably you have a lot of time in your hands to do some modding and do linux BSD stuff because
>muh hacker culture
If happens that you actually have a work in IT or you are a developer and still do that stuff, GOOD for you i'm glad that you enjoy it just don't be a fedora faggot and start appearing in cringe threads because >i'm intellectually superior.
>hurrr microsoft spies you.
I don't have anything to hide and i'm not a delusional faggot. They don't give a shit for your fat ass.
Because sometimes i need linux software and do some testing before putting software on servers.
And because i like how it looks and feels.
>hurrrr elementary OS what a faggot
All linux distro bones are the same, i can compile almost everything.
I don't give a fuck if you like it or not.
>using "I have nothing to hide" as an argument
>I don't have anything to hide
Please give me all of your personal infomation, including your IP Address, your credit card number, your social security number, and your full name and address. We need it for testing and quality purposes.
yes it does (marketing)
Still everything you do on the internet does have the same effect, it will be used to sell stuff or whatever.
really? everything you do on the internet is logged also this guy is right
so same shit different wrapping.
want "protection" use a VPN (i assume 90% of /g/ uses it)
>4chan is an anime imageboard
Not anymore, weeboo
Agreed. Aninme stays on /a/ and we can continue to post our rare Stallmans
Whatever you say, reddit.
Posting emoticons should be a bannable offense.
/g/ is pretty much a reddit colony nowadays. Even the animeposters here are /a/ rejects that probably come from /r/anime. Notice how they're trying to force their shitty memegirl, totally unrelated to technology, as /g/ mascot.
>Then why are you even on /g/?
>skype on leenix a shit
>spotify on leenix a shit
>no word on leenix
>call of duty on leenix a shit
I use leenix on muh laptop and raspi though.
see i don't have a problem with Microsoft allegedly "spying" on me while using Windows 10 because i don't download child anime tiddies like you fucking cucks
but mint and remixOS are cool
Is Jennyfag like Barniefag?
>Needs to show off about his indie operating system on a chinese cartoon image board
>calls others babies
There needs to be a rule against cartoons outside of /co/, its just normalfag degeneracy
REMINDER THAT 4CHAN IS AN ANIME SITE! YOU'RE THE CANCER KILLING /G/ IF YOU SUPPORT OR DEFEND JENNY AND WESTERN ANIMATION DEGENERACY!
My cartoons are better than your cartoons.
Actually, anime is for normalfags. Cartoons are for a select group.
>weebs post chinese cartoons and get told to fuck off back to /a/
>b-b-but 4chinz is muh safe space sekrit weeb club
>a character from a western cartoon gets posted
>waah it isn't /g/ go back to /co/
have you ever tried install xilinx ise and petalinux sdk in ubuntu/linux?
windows took 2 clicks and linux didn't work at all.
therefore ubuntu/linux is shit, full of shit. nothing but trash. everything is faster and smoother on windows.
A terminal is a UI.
It used to be that Unix users would mock PC users on account of how sophisticated Unix GUIs were compared to CLI-only DOS. Now, 16 year old linux babbies think they're hot shit because they type commands like a hacker in a movie.
Linux itself. Linux is an OS by the definition of both POSIX, Dennis Ritchie's own words (A kernel is an operating system proper) and Operating Systems: Design and Implementation by Tanenbaum.
GNU is an additional program to Linux.
Linux is not UNIX because Linux Foundation does NOT pay shit to The Open Group. But by the definition I mentioned earlier, it is an OS according to the POSIX, it isn't "certified" yet.
>Also, GNU is not one program, it's a set of program - which can also include a Linux kernel
So, I'll rephrase this:
GNU are some additional programs to Linux OS.
And Linux is not GNU per se. Linux, X, Apache, systemd, etc. is not a part of GNU project and will never be, unless GNU started to steal codes like they always have.
Stallman is the reason you can even use Linux, the least you can do is give him a little credit, that's all he wants
>inb4 Stallman is a autist and I don't need GNU
Try using a non botnet Linux OS (ie not Android) without any GNU code and see how it goes
This is the only credit I want to give to Stallman.
>Try using a non botnet Linux OS (ie not Android) without any GNU code and see how it goes
There, all done.
Learn basic navigation and file manipulation first (cp - copy, cd - change directory, mv - move file, etc)
Just look up basic terminal commands and practice using them to move and delete files around your directories.
>Linux is not UNIX
That's exactly what I said, it isn't. If you can't call them UNIX, don't say it is an UNIX kernel.
>Linux is not GNU
GNU project adopted Linux back in 2012. They forked the kernel and named it Linux-libre.
Most FSF approved distros are just GNU. While mainstream distros like Arch is not GNU only. It has a different kernel named Linux. We call them GNU/Linux.
GNU/Linux is a variant of GNU. Plain and simple
Also, all of GNOME counts as GNU. GNU has a kernel, Shell utils, corelibs and a graphical DE and its relevant packages. GNU is a fully functional operating system on its own while Linux is just a bunch of drivers
>fully functional operating system
Hold on, let me see the base GNU packages.
Import it from BSD, done.
??? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?
telnet, ftp, rsh, rlogin, tftp? who the fuck uses telnet?
That is the basic packages needed to run a fully functional "GNU" system.
You don't need a FUCKING COMPILER or DE to get a system running.
>GNOME counts as GNU
GNUTLS even splitted from GNU Project because of Stallman's nonsense.
>??? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?
Holy fuck. Kids don't know the original Unix typesetter?
It was used to create all of the cool Unix books (and man pages).
Simply looking for replacement doesn't mean GNU already isn't a fully functional OS itself.
All the replacement you found can be put together to make a Frankenstein. But That still does not mean
> Linux is a fully functioning operating systemIt's only a kernel, and GNU already has a Linux kernel
I run a Debian chroot on my phone. Can you do the same with windows? Thought so
If you're actually using the GNU system as the operating system, then it's right to call the system a GNU/Linux system. If you're not using the GNU system as an operating system, then you can't call the system a GNU/Linux system. Android systems are systems that pair Linux with Android and don't rely on GNU.
>Complains about anime in 4chan of all places
Microsoft security xD
You still can't install programs locally, and every single shity game require administrator account
Not to mention all that fucking exploits becuse how gives a fuck about sane user control, you have 2 choices -> use only install program, give everybody admin
No jails or even simple local user
i will anyway, but not without fight. I don't give a fuck about nsa, more about pol ice.
if you can't protect your privacy and give all you data on clear, you will be accused.
that's the reason to use gnu/linux
I belive that system that don't respect my decisoin to not to update or not to send traffic is my enemy, and is doing things against my will.
And that's the reason fo linux
If you would call it that, it's not like maintaining a distro requires many resources on their part. In fact, valve has very little risk involved with steam os, instead it goes to the hardware distributors.
Are you trying to argue that if Linux didn't exist that you wouldn't be able to use GNU by now? Really? The only reason Hurd is in the state that its in is because Linux was released and it was there and it worked, kind of.
