I'm in the same boat. I mostly pirate games (and even that has detoriated a lot in the last ten years after I "grew up" and made my own money), when there's a new release where I'm not sure if I can trust the reviews. I have burned myself too many times on blatantly shilled games, that turned out subpar for what I expected.

Also, I've pirated maybe three games in the last two years. I have ~450 games in my Steam library, another 250 on my shelf, and maybe a hundred in Origin, Gamestop, GoG etc.
I rarely see games that I instantly want to buy at release anymore. It's easier to just pick out an old game I haven't played for years, and then wait for a sale.
