There's 16GB DDR4 RAM selling for $75 on Amazon. There's zero reason to not get 16GB if you're upgrading your rig seeing how a single stick is normally $40-$45. You might as well future-proof if you're already being forced to get DDR4 with new processors and motherboards. For most people it's not just an additional $30 to a $45 purchase, it will be an additional $30 to a $400 or larger purchase. Chances are if you're completely modernizing your computer anyway most nerds will want to go ahead and save an additional $30 for the admittedly limited but useful benefits of 16GB.
>>

>>
>>52874674
Anything where you would have that much memory used, or risk swapping.

For me, work browser instance has several stupidly heavy web applications I need to use frequently throughout the day. I've got stupidly large, stupidly complex, word processor and spreadsheet documents open all day. One IDE. A few dozen ssh connections, and two separate VPNs. Various other isolated browser instances that I open and close as needed. A few pieces of hardware specific shitty vendor software.

Admittedly that's a work machine, not my home system, but yeah. And I'm right in the middle of my office for RAM usage.
>>
>>52874054
If you're buying straight spirits, then yeah, it's a rip off. However, for cocktails, or extremely rare whiskeys, et al, you're better off going to a bar.
>>
>>52873096
I think I paid $65 for 16GB.
>>
>>52875392
Depends on if you have self control and the ability to save money for s free weeks. Really good scotch can cost $30+ a drink at the bar, but about $100 a bottle at the store. If you don't have the self control not to drink it in one or two sittings, it's a waste of money. If you've got even a little self control, it either saves you money, or let's you drink much nicer scotch.
>>
>>52875536
I agree, for the most part. But what about super rare whiskeys like Pappy Van Winkle? Not saying that I have the pallet worthy of even purchasing a single serving; but considering that it's virtually impossible to obtain a bottle--if you really wanted to try it, your only option is to get it from a bar, and a high-end one at that.
>>
>>52875596
Humm. I haven't tried that one. I think I know what I'm ordering next time work has a swanky party though....

Starting around 1998, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and several other standards and trade organizations addressed the ambiguity by publishing standards and recommendations for a set of binary prefixes that refer exclusively to powers of 1024

Gibibyte was created to refer to measurements of 1024 because when marketing lists GB on products its almost always 1000. So in this case it is most likely GB not GiB
>>
>>52876761
It was also because publishers and editors kept on trying to "correct" the math in papers and textbooks, and the PhDs who wrote said papers and textbooks got tired of fighting with them. Sad.

8GB is enough unless you run a server have 200+ chrome tabs open.

Windows also caches RAM that's not in use. So if you have 16GB of memory, Windows is going to idle using 8-12GB until you use programs that need that much RAM.

Windows is shit for memory management. It's shitty in general, but that's a given. Memory management in particular though is just fucking retarded. There's no fucking good reason for Windows to use swap (sorry, virtual memory) as it does. That is to say routinely, and long before there's even a slight risk of running low on RAM.

If you have 200+ tabs open, chances are you're only looking at a small percentage of them.

Try one or more of this alternatives instead:

1 - unload tabs if you don't need them. this will make firefox use less ram and run smoother. use something like UnloadTab extension or similar

2 - multiple profile: if you have stuff from, say, uniersity, personal stuff, work, other, you might want to consider using separate profiles for each of them. bonus point: you don't have to logout and re-login if you need to use multiple accounts on the same site

> firefox -no-remote -ProfileManager

3 - Save session -- https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/addon/session-manager/

In the end: you don't have to be such an idiot and buy MOAR RAM.

If you are even a little smarter, you can achieve decent speed even with 8 or 4 GB of ram (yes, 4GB is borderline, i know).

I always max the ram on my machines when it's affordable if I don't when I get / build them.

Why the fuck wouldn't you go for shitloads of it? It's not expensive now.

I am an oldfag and remember the Asian RAM crisis in the early 1990s (i think haha! proves I'm an oldfag) where the price of ram quadrupled practically overnight and then there was a massive shortage.

That sucked.
