My sister bought herself a Macbook Air, and it's given me my first chance to use a Macbook. I think it's actually pretty good. Why do some people on /g/ hate on it? Even I fucking did. The touchpad, screen, and keyboard are actually pretty good. It's very thin and light weight with a good aluminum build. I need a laptop that I can move around easily and take it to places that I might need it. I can get one of these for around 400 used, what is a good laptop for that or cheaper?
yeah, it looks good. that's the point of a macbook.
however, you'll find that the software selection is useless and it's almost impossible to carry around for the real portable use they advertise
get a used thinkpad for half that price and install gnu/linux
this guy does a good job of explaining, but i think he uses windows
they are all fine, airs are some of the better cost ratio ones you can get, but the screen resolution leaves much to be desired. but considering how many people jerk off to x series thinkpads which have the same resolution, whatever. (yes i realize $200 vs like $1200 is something to talk about).
the problem is you end up spending like fucking $2500-$3000 for a modern mbp, and the screen is nothing special anymore so that leaves you with the trackpad.
yes, the trackpad on these things is worth a premium, but only to a certain extent. i fucking love the trackpad on my 2011, but i spent like $2300 on this fucker and then later added my own ram and ssd upgrade
now i now you're trolling
the screen on the macbook air is straight up garbage, and thats coming from a $1000 pc
Stupid /g/ ebin maymay, basically.
>implying ecosystem, build quality, and OS is free
>implying the behavior of fags you've never met should ever influence your personal selection of tool
Ignore this faggot.
Grab Homebrew (http://brew.sh) and you've basically got an in to almost any command line app you want.
There's a reason you see a lot of goddamn macintosh computers among software developers. They're solid UNIX workstations with a decent UI.
osx is a toy os faggots
you will literally never get any real work done with the bullshit restrictions apple put on you
THAT's why software selection sucks
now fuck off, you hipster homosexual cunts
Tell that to the millions of developers that use it day in and day out. There are literally no bullshit restrictions, you can compile and run anything you want and download anything you want. Do you honestly have any idea what you're talking about?
> I need a laptop that I can move around easily
I don't understand why people point this out. It's not like they make laptops with CRTs in them anymore. Anything under 15 pounds is easy to move around.
Let me guess, you're unemployed at home doing programming "work" in C and Haskell and whatever other meme language is hot this month while people making node.js "apps" have a career?
Yea I can agree.
I like Thinkpads but people always say they smell like ass lmao. Well, they are also quite heavy and etc.
Ohh ok. I'm trolling, yet you are the same faggot that goes around and tells people to install gentoo. Go fuck yourself, you autistic fuck.
>you will literally never get any real work done with the bullshit restrictions apple put on you
Your Idea of "work" is ricing and shitposting on /g/. OS X is perfectly adequate for software development and other work, as is evidenced by the thousands of professionals that use a Mac.
OH MY GOD
H-HOLY FUCKING SHIT
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA DUDE AN UBUNTU USER REPLIED TO ME
OH MY GOD MY FUKCING LUNGS
I CANT EVEN CONVEY THROUGH TEXT HOW HARD IM LAUGHING
ARE YOU LITERALLY 12 YEARS OLD OR WHAT KID????
FUCKING MANCHILDREN I SWEAR TO GOD
JUST INSTALL GENTOO ALREADY
Dude I'M NOT A SHILL. In fact i've always hated Apple and everything to do with them. Yes, the screen isn't the BEST but for shit posting and watching videos it isn't half bad.
>mfw all these man children arguing over their preferred OS
Look, the air is solid but the retina is godly, the display is on another level and it uses the same great build quality. The trackpad is even better because it has force touch, the processor and graphics are better and basically the same battery life.
Try getting a refurbished or used for better price.
>I can't lift 15 pounds effortlessly
Do you have trouble with grocery bags, changing tires, and college textbooks? I don't even work out and I can't imagine what it would be like to have trouble lifting 15lbs.
good value for the money especially because of dat build quality and dat battery life.
That being said you should go for a macbook pro if you're willing to spend the cash. More powerful and you get dat retina display. All of Apple's products are exceptionally well built and have a very "premium" feel to them but that feel does come at a price. I use Apple products everyday (2015 27" iMac, 2015 Macbook Pro, iPhone 6 and Apple Watch) but I'm not some shitty fanboy and I'll be the first one to tell you that you are paying a lot for the materials used and the insane build quality rather than hardware. That being said the entire Mac line is comprised of some very powerful machines that run extremely well due to the insanely optimized OS. The only Apple computers that aren't worth buying at this point are the Mac Mini and the new MacBook thing that has an Intel Core M in it and one fucking USB Type-C for $1300
also I can tell you that the MacBook pro has an amazing battery life. I took this off the charge at 8:00a.m. and used it all day at work, played some light vidya on it, and watched a shit ton of jewtube videos on and I'm still good to go for a few hours
Still functions like new, looks like new externally. Never had any failures where apple is to blame. Been using it mainly since 2012. The only problem would be the overheating problem. Do some heavier computing, hit Tj max, and your thigh gets hot. The plastic cover between the monitor and main body has a lot of mini cracks too, which I think is caused by the blowing hot air.
Nope, I actually do all of that easily. I'm pretty good at fixing cars desu. I think your an idiot. How would you like having a 15 pound laptop in your bookbag, or having it on your stomach at night while your in bed. I haven't seen an idiot like you in a while, so just die faggot.
not a problem.
If you do get a macbook air make sure you get a model that has an SSD in it. The apple SSD's are the fastest SSD's in production right now.
the 2015 models have a 2GB/s read speed and a 1.25GB/s write speed. They're fucking insane.
>you will literally never get any real work done with the bullshit restrictions apple put on you
Don't know what you're talking about. There's usually a mac alternative for software. If there isn't I just need to run windows/linux in parallels.
If you're talking about installing software from outside the app store, it's literally one change you need to make in the system settings.
They are putting pcie ssds on macbook? Fuck i want that
>Do you have trouble with grocery bags
... I should get macbook air?
My back hurts after walking with more than 4kg of groceries.
Damn that is insane. I'm really considering one the price tag is kinda high for a newer 2015 model. I spent 660 on my desktop and I got
16GB of RAM
EVGA 500W PSU
Zotac GTX 970
So spending more than that on a laptop is kinda insane, but it might be worth it.
> How would you like having a 15 pound laptop in your bookbag, or having it on your stomach at night while your in bed.
15 pounds in a book bag would be light compared to the textbooks I had when I was at college. A 15 pound laptop would be built like a tank so I'd appreciate the fact I could do whatever I wanted to my bookbag and not worry about damaging the laptop.
15 pounds on your stomach is nothing. A transmission on your stomach is a little uncomfortable but not a laptop. There's no way you can change a tire and not be able to effortlessly handle any laptop that is currently made.
I apologize for calling you a shill. It just seems like a shill type of post. I mean, there's always a Mac thread everyday.
I'll be real with you. The 11 inch air starts at $1100 here (Canada), yet a cheap $200 Windows laptop (Asus x205ta) has a screen just as good as it, minus the matte coating.
When you get to battery life, the Dell XPS 13 1080 model gets more than both the 11 and 13 inch Macbook air, while having a much better screen, no bezels, and a smaller overall size. They are completely overpriced for what they offer. You could argue the trackpad is better, and it is. But compared to the XPS, its not worth paying even a $50 premium for. The XPS has a trackpad that is 95% as good as the pros (the only Macbook I've spent more than a month with, so I'm using it as a comparison).
>LMAO! You don't put a transmission on your stomach.
You do when you change one without a jack. You put the thing on top of you and bench press it while your buddy bolts it in.
But you seriously can change a tire but can't effortlessly lift 15 pounds for a day? My backpack weighed at least thirty in university and I carried it miles every day. I've hiked 5 miles in a day with a 70 rucksack. I'm not fit at all.
forgot to add a pic.
Kek, Windows is more efficient than OS X. It's not optimized worth shit, and it constantly breaks WiFi with every new update.
Also, Apple computers have a very high rate of failure (just look up all the logic board issues). Build quality is only perceived. It isn't actually any better than other similarly priced laptops. In some cases worse, as some oems use carbon fiber these days, which is leagues ahead of aluminum. Then there's the business laptops, which are made of magnesium and shit.
NP bro, and Thanks for acknowledging that. Yea there always is dude and I hate them, but I did truly have a question.
Are does cheapo laptops any good? Might be good enough for what I need it for.
Dell XPS are great laptops, I like the older ones, pretty cheap actually for the specs.
You mean Samsung SSDs that Apple uses are really fast. Iirc, Dell has also started using them in the new XPS laptops and business/gaming shit.
And yeah, they're incredible. Apple got that shit right for being the first to use them commercially.
Also, side note, fucking oled displays in laptops are a thing now! Fucking HP and Dell! Who would have thought those dinosaurs would step up and be first.
What is the point of that? If your fixing cars a jack is a fucking must. M8 that is easy, I dare you to walk in the fucking mountains, I hiked for like 6km or more in the forest of the highest mountain in Cuba. Shit is fucking crazy, I'll post a pic in a second.
It's really good if you want long battery life, browse the web, and use office (minus huge spreadsheets of course). I get 10 hours a charge out of mine, and its small and light, so carrying to and from school with all my books is easy. And it's cheap, so getting a few scratches or anything isn't anything I worry about. It honestly depends on which cheap laptop you pick. There are some good ones and bad ones. I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Asus x205ta though.
I agree. XPS stuff is great. I haven't gotten one yet, though I've been planning to. Just waiting for next year to see if they include more than one USB C port. Right now its 2 USB 3.1, and 1 USB C, and I want the reverse of that for future proofing.
if they do drop one with an oled in the next 30 days I'll return my current MacBook Pro (just bought it last week to replace my old 2011 macbook pro) and exchange it for the new model. More than likely they're not going to do it though because the retina display is still fucking GOAT. If anything they'll drop a fully 4k rMBP but I wouldn't want that desu because I already have a 5k iMac and honestly its not THAT much better than what's already on the MacBook Pro. Don't get me wrong, It's REALLY fucking nice on the 27" iMac but on a 13" or 15" screen it really doesn't make much of a difference
>i recently visited fascist Spain/Italy/Argentina/nazi Germany, why do people hate it? Everything is clean, the train runs on time , everything functions smoothly.
Because you have no freedom, and can only do the tiny amount of choices that the overlords allows you to do. It's a system for imbeciles who can't think for themselves, who have little knowledge and people who love to follow orders without asking why.
If you prefer Macs and you're on this board you're retarded. It's not about comparing the specs of the machine to rival machines. it's the fact that everything that has to do with Apple hardware or the OS is forcefully shoved down your throat.
This is a technology board. People prefer business grade laptops here because it allows them to easily mod every single piece of hardware on it. Before you mature /v/irgins migrated here, we used to value shit like that.
I gave it to my son for his birthday so he can do his homework. It was pretty slow by today's standards anyways.
You really should go the MacBook Pro route if you're looking to have a computer that will last you a while. If you want to buy used I'd suggest looking for a 2013 model or newer as they still have some life left in them.
Something else to consider is Apple's financing. If you qualify for their Barclays visa apple rewards card your first purchase of $1000 or more will have 0% interest for 18 months. That's how I bought this MacBook. Not because I could't afford to outright pay for it but because why drop $1550 right now when I can make a few $300 or $400 payments over a few months at 0% interest.
After it's paid off that card is going straight in the shredder though because I absolutely refuse to use credit cards under most circumstances.
I've never used it. Go ahead and apply here for dat card with the 0% for 18 months. Unless paypal can offer 0% interest this is your best bet. Even if you don't think you'll get approved there's no harm in applying.
>If anything I've had way more sex than you so calm the fuck down you mouth breather
who even seriously bases any degree of worth at all on how many people you have conned into letting you stick your penis in them?
Any time man. If you get approved I really suggest the 13" MacBook Pro with the base 2.7ghz processor but upgraded flash storage to 256gb. after taxes it'll run just over $1600 and be delivered to your door next day for an additional $20.
Pro tip, go through the education store and you'll get $100 off of the MacBook Pro. There's not even a verification process to make sure you actually attend the college you say you do.
>says software selection is useless
>says impossible to carry around
>says you'll never get any work done
>recommends a used post-apocalyptic looking laptop that weighs 2 pounds more with Linux as a remedy
Hello meme-man my old friend
I see you've come to shitpost once again
>Why do some people on /g/ hate on it? Even I fucking did.
know that feel. i reckon it was just irrational prejudices or bigotry to make myself feel superior, if i'm being honest with you, kinfolk.
Like watch stupid shit on youtube and shitpost on /g/? What else would you do with your mac and how do the negatives show? I've used mac for several years and it btfos windows shills left and right. Only downside is a ridiculous price but that's justified for what the product really is.
>why do you hate macs /g/
You fucking shills always use the same fucking line. No one really hated it but then you group of shills came in and started this whole /g/ hates mac shit so you could post these kind of threads. Fuck
