Found a USB flash drive on the ground, has nothing on it when opening on Windows 7.

Ideas?

If we find anything I'll upload.

you are the reason my life as a sysadmin is a nightmare
you are the reason why I just reimage your computer when you do something fucking stupid
oh, and you probably have some nasty ass spyware so go ahead and reinstall windows

Congratulations, you're now infected. Run a full virus scan, dumbass.

Rule of thumb is to never plug in an unknown USB-stick to your device, they're fucking cheap as hell nowadays anyway. Not worth the risk.
>>
>finds usb stick on the ground
>plugs it in
you are the type of person who would benefit from getting some simpler technology, maybe a MPB is more your speed
>>
You can't get a virus from an USB stick, if you're using Linux that is.
>>
>>52672236
that's what I was thinking, boot an old machine from a livecd and check it out
>>
>>52672864
If the usb controller on the flash drive was overwritten with a virus it can infect the usb controller on the host computer and then it can run whenever the user runs windows or any other supported OS and automatically download a payload
>>
you can just use a VM to do this also. the VM will let you use the USB inside the VM and it wont affect the host computer at all. or use a junk computer you have laying around for testing shit on

>>52674565

>>
>>52674565
It's not likely but then again neither is AIDS. The fact that there appears to be nothing on it is pretty suspicious.
>>
>>52674565
I did this out of curiosity once.

I created a simple program (that was winxp times, ~2002) that was opening my webpage, webpage was logging every enter with my simple "key" passed through GET so i won't get any fishy results because of search bots. I even used fishy yellow smiley icon for autorun so it'll look more suspicious.
I dropped one old pendrive in the school, one in KFC and in the end i got something around 100 logged enters in my catch-website. No one bothered to even format it, despite fact that it was even flashing DOS prompt with every autorun.

Please stop being so gullible. If i'd be just a itty bitty more edgy, i could gladly fuck up their lives just to make myself feel a little better. Connecting unknown pendrive to a windows machine and opening it is fucking retarded.

My hobby is going to the 2nd hand store and buying 100 bucks worth of old hard drives every couple months.

I usually get about 20-30 of them.

Hook them up to an old desktop, and run photorec, set to recover media files.

I have a fairly large collection of OC. I'm not into blackmail or doxing, and have never shared any of it.

I do it because peoples private lives intrigue me.

What is this called? Techno voyeurism?

Just be on the safe side and really nume the fuck out any storage medium you're planning on selling off

Also, I'm torn between calling this creepy as fuck and wanting to see what you got in your collection.

When did you start doing this? What kinda stuff have you found?

>>52671851

>>
>>52675160
Is it even illegal to have other people's files if you legally obtained the device. Wouldn't all of the files on the drive legally be yours to share and redistribute? Legitimate curiousity
>>
>>MPB
Mac pook bro?
>>
>>52675335
I have asked around, and the general consensus is that if you share files, and are discovered, you could get into trouble, regardless of the origin of the data.

On the other hand, technically you arent breaking any specific laws if you recover deleted data on a device you now legally own.

Dont quote me on that, I havent spoken to a real lawyer about it.
>>
>>52675335
The legal status of data on a found flash drive is unclear. The person who lost it certainly did not intend the data to be shared and did not give you permission to do it.

I found whole computers in the trash with intact hard drives. Always wiped them clean.
>>
>>52675335
Yes but obviously you cannot redistribute copyrighted files and anything illegal remains illegal. If the files themselves are illegal then possessing them is a crime.
>>
>>52675160
I smash all my old hard drives and light them on fire
>>
>>52675203
I wont share anything I have found, sorry.

>>52675252
Started about 3 years ago.
I sell off the crap drives and keep the good ones, and generally recoup 70-80% of what I spent initially.

I have found a lot of interesting stuff.

Porn, obviously.
The biggest pull initially was seeing people from all walks of life getting down.
Yes, we all know everyone does it, but when you see beautiful people, ugly people, 20 year olds, 80 year olds, athletes, disabled people, it is an eye opener. People who cheat on their spouses, people who have had what seems a very long and very active monogamous sex life.
Some have one or two naughty pics of their wife in a revealing nighty, others have gigs of explicit pics and vids from the last 10 years.

Porn aside, theres always a story to follow. I love it when I get a drive that used to be from old home media NAS's (lookout for the red's... theyre most likely to be from a NAS) Nicely categorised, easy to follow.

Sad people who have thousands of pics of them alone with their cat. Then no cat, and thyre even sadder. Then a new cat, and slightly happier.

People who go on holiday every two months with their large family, and just have a blast trying out new things every day, surrounded by people they love.

And everything in between.
>>
>>52671663
easier on Linux, but w'evs.
1. download some imaging tool like FTK Imager (accessdata.com/product-download/digital-forensics/ftk-imager-version-3.2.0)
2. Either learn to carve the files yourself, or upload the image and we will.
3. cool
>>
>>52675978(You)
(Cont.)
I have also found some very dark stuff, which has made me wonder about turning in to the authorities. Invariably, I dont, and just wind up destryoing the drive.
Sometimes I feel bad about not telling anyone, thats probably the only really creepy thing I think I do.

>>52675335
>>52675457
>>52675477
Hard to explain, but another part of why I enjoy this is precisely because I dont share. It's memories that were deleted, but have been reanimated.

The stuff I do keep, I put into an organised folder, and in the root I put a text files with the drives details, date bought, and a pic of the disk. Then I Rar the folder with a password generated by keepass, and store the password in there.

I rarely look at what I save more than once. I'm keeping it all for when I retire (in maybe 30-35 years), so I'll have something to do if I'm bored.

>>52675524
Just take a hammer to it, burning wont do that much more damage unless you get to extremely high temperatures.
>>
>>52675978
Take a selection of pics, only use pics where people's faces are turned/obscured.
Make a fucking book about this. Peoples' Deleted lives.

Get rich.

before getting rid of a hdd i ripped out a bunch of screws and parts inside it then bent the disc thing and scratched it up

how safe is it
>>
>>52676323
Pretty safe.

All you really need to do is dent the platters a little, and it will make recovery impossible without spending tens of thousands of dollars and several hundred man hours to do so.
>>
>>52676311
I might be remembering the badusb thing incorrectly
>>

it's legit.

there are trojans/rootkits/keyloggers/whatever that can spread from microcontroller firmware to microcontroller firmware (like a flash drive to an external hard drive)

>>52678086
I dont mean dark as in dark web stuff.
Got a couple drives over the years which had some wife beaters who actually recorded themselves going ape.
There was a 40 something year old who would cyber with teens on msn and skype. He also had a lot of younger content.
And one couple into cutting, rope play and tit torture.

>>52678149
Mostly I go to the asian sector, lots of pc repair shops where I can get good deals on boxes of drives. Also cash converters, sometimes pawn shops.
>>
>>52676250
Fucking do this. I'd buy it
>>
>>52676323

fagget, all you had to do was run #shred
>>
>>52671663
Get a undelete program and scan it to see what you find. The scan may take a long time like a hour. Be prepared, it might not be what you're hoping for. For instance I found a 16gb drive and recovered wifi drivers and 10 GB of gay porn, so that was just a giant waste of my time.

the button on the flash drive makes it look like a usb rubber ducky. and "payloads" are shared online which are then loaded into the firmware on the drive.

never plug an unknown flash drive into any computer you value.

Malware spread by USB is still a thing?
Why don't people just disable autorun.

If you have WINE installed.
