Java appreciation thread

I like Java, but I would never admit it IRL.

What's the reasoning behind Java not being a compiled language? Could've been the successor of C++. Now it's just another fart in the wind.

Java is a prime example of a product that should never have been made. It adds absolutely nothing to the modern programming environment, business and industry as a whole.

It's this thing written in C++ by the Sun company (since taken over by Oracle). It's a 'virtual machine' that abstracts away most of the hardware details for the calling software, ie Java software. It's how portability to different hardware is achieved for Java.

You really don't know how portability works, do you? It's not an issue of whether the machine has a compiler or not, but rather how well the code works across different architectures.
