Similar to PCs, people don't feel the need to upgrade them every year or two. Since people aren't constantly holding them out in the open in public places, they don't feel any social pressure to have the latest model, so as long as it Just Works, no need to upgrade.

This is Intel's fault and to some extent AMD when they were relevant. The pushed the cpu performance way too far and software is at least a decade if not two behind. I got family member on E6600 running Windows 10 fine. The fact is that unless you are a gamer or tech enthusiast they is no need to upgrade.
