Yup. And they took the drives without any requests for data. No communication at all.
(btw transparency reports are posted here https://cock.li/transparency/ , look at them with a web archive)
whats the point of secure mail providers if whatever happens they will give all info to feds like slaves? at least gmail is working 24/7 and is the most supported email provider in a world
Cock.li was not a secure email provider.
Where did this myth come from
Cock.li was a email provider that had silly host names. Did @cocksinmyan.us not tip you off?
Is it that it didn't ask for your fucking social security number and life story when you sign up?
This entire ordeal is pants on head retarded.
The first one was over that kid who called in all those school bomb threats; this one is who knows. It's bound to happen eventually when your service's primary 'customer' base is autistic retards.
who gives a fuck
this is literally what happens to ALL /g/ attempts at doing ANYTHING
it always fucking fails

I'd like to remind Vincent that I opposed using Hetzner for a different reason, but the general consensus on IRC is that Hetzner is not a very reliable hosting provider. And this is the result. Did Vincent even consider asking to add a second hard drive to the RAID array while the first hard drive was seized?
I also oppose using FlokiNET.
> However, where FlokiNET deems it necessary, it may in its sole discretion immediately suspend or terminate such User's service without issuing such a warning.
This is not a fair thing to do.
FlokiNET's network also sucks. Their upstreams are also shitty. It's all just a marketing trick, but nothing actually good. #/g/hostingtalk agrees, we talked about FlokiNET on 2016-01-12 and 2016-01-13. Coincidently this was two days ago.-- Wed, 13 Jan 2016 --

Vincent should use Leaseweb or Voxility, and stop wasting money on a lawyer for stupid legal questions when he can ask on IRC where people know just as much.

I hit the post limit of 2000 characters, so I'll continue.
As far as I remember, Vincent picked Hetzner.de because of their "priority" support which he ended up paying more than he would have at Leaseweb. This is all so deluded.
The very best option would be to colocate a dedicated server where the data center personnel has least access to the server. I'm not saying it would stop seizing hard drives, but it would at least be more sensible than letting German authorities do their usual tricks on Hetzner that we've seen for years. Even so, you'd have more control over the hardware, paying less in the long term and a single hard drive seizure wouldn't be bad if you add another drive after it.
bananafish is a faggot who told me to basically fuck off for being autistic about the need to implement anti-spam measures to the /g/ wiki. He didn't implement them, nor did he fix broken SVGs; actually, SVG uploads on /g/ wiki are still broken today. Within a month or so from my autism outburst, the /g/ wiki went invite-only for registrations because of spam issues. I consider that to have been the wrong action to do.
He's probably still on his IRC server, although the community there may have died down a bit. I haven't followed the /g/ wiki for about a year, but the sysop that was appointed at that time also didn't have much experience with MediaWiki or its administration. That was also not what I call a good choice, and it inevitably led to few editwars with the sysop.
Off-topic: weechat and irssi.
Why is nobody talking about how he had NO maildir backups? Just a sql dump from a month ago?
It's literally a three line script to back up your shit somewhere else. Protip: mail compresses very, very well. Fuck this guy.
Hetzner.de is timely even without priority support, and that's actually what I and some others(?) on IRC told Vincent. I believe he decided to shrug it off.
The level of support you get from Hetzner.de is not always that good though, especially in English. It may take long to get a reasonable response.
Teknik.io is hosted on a Comcast business connection to a home address, as far as I remember. Obviously that's not a good idea, you can guess why. I don't remember the guy who runs it, and I don't "hate" him as much as some other dickwad service providers on /g/ because he seems to understand the implications.
RebeccaBlackTech too is hosted on an Elisa home cable Internet connection by a Finnish guy nicknamed anounyym1 that I have supported numerous times before with hard drives. It too has frequent network issues, but it's a good cause. I've also met him at weeb conventions. Few months ago he said he wanted to get rid of RBT because it's a burden and wanted me to take over, but I don't have the resources or good software to do it.
What else did you want to know?
About Teknik.io, it looks like he has two bogus MX-es. That's not good for mail delivery.teknik.io has address 184.108.40.206
teknik.io mail is handled by 5 teknik.io.
teknik.io mail is handled by 10 teknik.io.
teknik.io mail is handled by 1 mail.teknik.io.
Last time I checked, Openmailbox was ran by two French kids on a cheap Online.net dedicated server and they didn't return to email queries. They have migrated since then.
Protonmail used to use Google Analytics and they also gave money to cybercriminals. Whoopee, these guys are not very intelligent so I don't trust them.
I should turn off my namefagging.
Those are kind of off-topic questions.

The Australian email provider? Those guys are really good at what they're doing, they have a lot of legal sense. They know their jurisdiction in Australia doesn't prevent disclosing national security letters received for their American servers, and they can't surrender information to US authorities due to Australian privacy laws.
Welp, I'm already using fastmail and I'm in murika. I'm just going to say a couple more question that's probably what some people are wanting to hear: recommend a email service, vpn, and some random autistic sage advice.
4chan is a honeypot, infinite chen is a honeypot, what isn't a honeypot? Endchan? 314chan? Oh right, I'm asking the wrong people, kill me now.
> Reading wub's replies makes me miss the early server/hosting generals here, thought they didn't end up as fleshed out as the PTG generals.
I was too busy in #pomfret developing Pomf 2.0.0 to notice. Fun fact, it's been released few days ago and I highly recommend other Pomf clones to migrate over.
Feel free to create those generals yourself once a week or so. #/g/hostingtalk is more active though.
> recommend a email service, vpn, and some random autistic sage advice.
1. Your own. Stay away from Postfix, you'll hurt yourself. I and many Pomf clone maintainers use OpenSMTPD.
2. Your own. Make sure it's not OpenVPN. Preferably, use OpenIKED which is IPsec.

If IPsec is shit, then OpenVPN using an undocumented/non-standard implementation of VPNs is even shittier.
IPsec has flaws in its standards, such as mandating DES. OpenBSD developers decided the IKEv2(?) standard was shit so they removed mandatory DES support this winter and said the standard sucks.
Shit vs poo, who cares?
First, I should be sorry for making an assumption too early about the hard drives. They took both hard drives this time. Sorry Vincent.
> @gexcolo Wait... Hetzner didn't replace the last HDD and let the RAID recover? Or did they take both HDDs?
> @dolosthegreat the former
Now, Hetzner is refusing to provide the confiscation order. That's not news to me.
> My lawyer @JesselynRadack has been courted between 8 different offices trying to figure out what happened from the first seizure.
> They either refer to a different office or demand the name on the confiscation order, which @hetzner_online refuses to provide.
Again, I'd like to point out that spending money on a lawyer for this silly thing is a waste. Get on IRC.
Also, Drybones was right for once. Pomf.is is shit (as determined by sole opinion of Wub without large consensus from #pomfret).
> First, I should be sorry for making an assumption too early about the hard drives. They took both hard drives this time. Sorry Vincent.
Actually I misread that, Hetzner didn't let the RAID recover. Lol, not a surprise.
No. mxtm is another guy who shut down his Pomf clone and migrated files over to Drybones' clone, Mixtape.moe.
Bibanon is not ArchiveTeam, they have both co-existed for a long while and there's cooperation between the groups.
WELL FUCK I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO ASK QUESTIONS HERE
so what's up with there not being a "go to top" and "go to bottom" thing on the catalogue? also, can you make a function to make sorting based on board? I'd like most to be bump-based, but /news/ to be based on newest item, personally
The German police seems to be really up in arms about people using free email services. I guess that's fair tho, people being potentially racist on the internet? Can't have that.
I understand tho, it's not like the German have anything more important to do right now.
>What's wrong about it? Some people deserve it.
It's edgy and dumb. Vigilante justice is fucking retarded. It is not up to you to determine who does and does not deserve it. Doxing only causes more problems for people like Vincent because cockroaches like you leech off other people.
>Don't whiteknight please.
I'm not. I'm just pointing out how retarded you are.
Friendly reminder, here's what's going to happen. Vincent will purchase an used server from FlokiNET and colocate it to Bucharest in Romania. This may or may not be Voxility's data center.
I have a reason to believe that it is Voxility's data center though. FlokiNET gets their upstream connectivity in Romania from Voxility, so chances are its hosted in their colocation facility - if not, where the hell is it? Some guy's basement?
Vincent is falling for FlokiNET's marketing tricks. Voxility is also very known for defending legal rights of their users just like FlokiNET and being Tor friendly, except Voxility doesn't advertise this as a feature.
I don't know about Vincent's colocation deal, but there's no reason to have FlokiNET be a middleman. It may even be more expensive. FlokiNET's policy is:
> However, where FlokiNET deems it necessary, it may in its sole discretion immediately suspend or terminate such User's service without issuing such a warning.
Even if Vincent moved to Voxility, he'd be safe there for a long while. That'd be a wise choice, but for reasons I still prefer Leaseweb and Portlane for this.
Vincent also said:
> The full security details of the security infrastructure that I'm deploying are not going to be made public,
Security through obscurity doesn't work. Chances are the IRC know the infrastructure anyway. With no transparency, nobody else can audit the infrastructure to be reliable and safe.
> but rest assured I'm doing everything I can to ensure the privacy of my users from this point forward.
I don't believe this until Vincent shows actions. Public WHOIS, organization/company entity, actually following the industry best practices?
After this, Vincent talks about implementing GPG to the email. Way to go with vendor locking your shit to a potential walled garden. This is also moot/pointless with full disk encryption, no matter what you're trying to tell me.
Back in my days, Anons had no mercy towards degenerates and their shit on Myspace or Facebook, and seeing people offended by the few Anons doing doxing or raids, which are virtual attacks is still giving me sad feelings, just like this thread. It's not about the tripfags or what they do, but perfectly represent how, even on 4chan now people, no better than social justice warriors, formatted to hate freedom, even freedom to offend or disrupt some people's virtual life... on facebook.
>why the drives were taken
Because, according to some powerful groups of interest, independent email services honing user privacy must not exist. See also what has been happening to Protonmail lately.
Back in your days, the German police (and most European agencies) wasn't literally in cahoots with every social network in existence with the only mission to fuck your shit up for not wanting willingly taking a good dose of cultural enrichment up the ass.
This is precisely what is happening now. I know you love your freedumbs, and frankly so do I, but we're getting fucked over pretty hard over in europe.
>but we're getting fucked over pretty hard over in europe.
My first post ITT. it's been an interesting read. As a sheltered burger who lives in the middle of nowhere, can you explain to me more about how you guys are getting screwed?
>/g/ can't do anything
okay, so let's design a specification to display text, images and vector-drawings in a dynamic fashion, permitting inputs such as buttons and text boxes (or even things like keybindings) and a method to transfer these further pieces of information across the internet; and we'll make it run on top of ipfs. Furthermore, we'll make it _user friendly_ so that we can push it onto normies, including as one of the first services a google replacement.
Basically, I propose a replacement to the "web" as normies know it; designed to cope with current demands, and enforcement of /g/ policy (ie not locked down by safe-space faggots)
Pretty much this.
And it's the plans of the EU put in execution.
Corporations > EU > States > Justice >>> Independent companies > you
OH I see you coming, you're gonna say "blame capitalism" if it were real capitalism, we would all have more choice. more diversity and services where quality and privacy primes over other's interests. a permanent war for delivering the best and the cheapest service, with the laws of nature.
why are you not blocking me while you can, socjus?
This, a billion times, and the reason is the people are told to support that liberal-socialist model, and the fuckers do this.
>land of the free
EU is not a democracy, and it's not the only , not the first and not the last site/service like this to fall, according to some cryptic laws they can and will use.
you'll see magically the "justice" will bring CP and/or IS links out of fucking nowhere to make sure it ceases.
fuck this shit i'm out.
The only reason places like OVH, server.lu, and Hetzner are good for seedboxes is lots of other people have seedboxes on their internal networks so you don't really care about their actual connections.
>Back in my days, Anons had no mercy towards degenerates and their shit on Myspace or Facebook, and seeing people offended by the few Anons doing doxing or raids, which are virtual attacks is still giving me sad feelings, just like this thread.
No, raiding was mostly humorous and had little moral purpose before 2007. Raiding was isolated to /b/ as well.
Raiding has, ever since 2007-2008, been edgy and not humorous.
>It's not about the tripfags or what they do, but perfectly represent how, even on 4chan now people, no better than social justice warriors
People have always been disdainful of raids outside of /b/. It is still the case now outside of /b/ and /pol/.
I would rather equate you pathetic fucks to SJWs, seeing as both of you use doxing as a tactic in vigilante justice.
>formatted to hate freedom, even freedom to offend or disrupt some people's virtual life... on facebook.
No. It's not freedom I hate. It's cretins like you. You may not realise it, but you fuck it up for EVERYONE else around you. In this case, Vincent got fucked because of people like you. In other cases, there are actual legislative efforts to end "internet harassment" (that is, disagreeing with someone online in many cases) because of people LIKE you, and other fucks who pull off dumb shit like swatters.
The worst are the shady and bulletproof hosters hosted on server.lu. When you attempt to call them out for using server.lu or asking for a test IP-address, they won't tell you - however, they're happy to give a test IP-address to someone else that doesn't know they're hosted on server.lu.
I believe BalticServers was one of them. Shady bunch.
- German gov't has help from facebook to 'combat racism online'
- Several UK and German journals are 'outing' people who go against the official statement on third world immigration, the idea being to create a climate of public shaming
- Most EU gov't control the news that gets out these days, picking and choosing stories and reports and only commenting on stuff they really can't hide, see the recent "events" in Cologne, which were even more widespread around France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden too but somehow went unnoticed
We are living the dystopia right now and you guys probably have some clue, but you have no idea how far this goes.
The reason they're in cahoots with social networking companies is because they see online harassment as a problem, BECAUSE people swat, dox etc. others on the internet. Those cases legitimately are harassing others, but I don't want legislation to restrict it, and you people are actively driving governments towards such legislation with your bullshit.
Both of you well know the consequence of legislation to "end online harassment". It'll get people in jail for just disagreeing with someone else who will then go on to claim death threats and other shit like that.
Again, you both have a living example of it right in this moment. Vincent's getting fucked because people like you pathetic pieces of shit use his services for malicious intent.
I referring to:
>okay, so let's design a specification to display text, images and vector-drawings in a dynamic fashion, permitting inputs such as buttons and text boxes (or even things like keybindings) and a method to transfer these further pieces of information across the internet
>- German gov't has help from facebook to 'combat racism online'
This is retarded, but I'm not surprised.
>- Several UK and German journals are 'outing' people who go against the official statement on third world immigration, the idea being to create a climate of public shaming
This is consistent with other social justice bullshit as well as vigilante justice which I've already spoken about. I'm not surprised, but it has very little to do with the government (at least, there's no solid proof of it), and it's pretty widespread in the US as well.
This is as much harassment as doxing someone would be.
>- Most EU gov't control the news that gets out these days, picking and choosing stories and reports and only commenting on stuff they really can't hide, see the recent "events" in Cologne, which were even more widespread around France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden too but somehow went unnoticed
It was unnoticed until someone did a story about it. Now it's a huge deal. The source of the problem is the shame culture against anti-immigration stances. Hopefully that will end as the anti-immigration parties become the biggest in European countries (SD in Sweden).
I agree with you that the EU isn't a democracy, simply because the European Commission is APPOINTED, is the only authority with the power to suggest legislation. All the parliament can do is vote on said legislation, and as such it's not a true representative democracy.
bscly you know how http+html+css+js+php is the "standard" of web browsers, and you know how it's grown into a clusterfuck?
What I propose is a redesigned system to simplify this, make it feasible, and in the process reduce the excess of modern websites and browsers.
(like firefox eating up gigabytes of memory)
>At least the feds in US give you some warrant before fuck your shit up
>it has very little to do with the government
The govt are complacent and don't want to act on that somehow. Also state-owned media is a fucking thing and they're doing it too.
>t was unnoticed until someone did a story about it. Now it's a huge deal.
Cologne is, how about the 12 or so other case that didn't reach the front page, or the news cycles at all that happened at the same fucking time?
>The govt are complacent and don't want to act on that somehow.
Yes, it is the freedom of a journalist to voice disdain for people. Much like you have the freedom to voice disdain for most groups (provided they're not racially charged things, which is unlawful, and yes, it's retarded that this is the case)
>Also state-owned media is a fucking thing and they're doing it too.
Obviously they'd voice views consistent with the state.
>Cologne is, how about the 12 or so other case that didn't reach the front page, or the news cycles at all that happened at the same fucking time?
Sure thing lad, they're on the front page in the relevant countries. In Sweden, for example, Cologne, Finland and Sweden are all covered by even their state media (Norwegian here, who read Swedish news occasionally). Pretty sure it's covered on the front page in France too.
Are you seriously trying to tell me this was just "ignored" when I could go fucking BBC's website and read about it? I could even go to SVT and read about it.
I'd wager it wasn't reported on because:
#1: Some news organisations have vested interest in not to do so until they're forced to by external media pressure.
#2: There's a culture of shaming """"racists"""" for criticising immigration policy, and as such the information may be slow to get out from the source itself.
#3: We already know the police force is afraid of being labelled racist to the point where they let this shit slide until called out, so they wouldn't voice it either.
He is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
He ran an email provided with meme domains as a joke and explicitly said it wasn't privacy oriented. He wasn't running lavabit 2.0. Some edgelord abused it and the gov't got pissed.
Now, he wants to protect his legitimate users from their shit being stolen by the feds. That doesn't mean he wants to be a haven for 12 year olds sending bombthreats. Most of the things that protect group A also protect group B and would only encourage more faggots to use it, which means more problems with the feds.
Last month encrypted email provider ProtonMail was knocked offline by "an extremely powerful DDoS attack". The Swiss company, which believes there were at least two distinct perpetrators behind the attack, says it is still ongoing with traffic hitting its infrastructure at a rate of 40-50 Gbps (gigabits per second), making it one of the longest and most powerful DDoS attacks ever recorded. It believes it may be being hit by a state actor because it provides secure email communications for journalists and activists.
To be frank, most of the /k/ meetups I've read about sounds fucking awesome. I'd love to go to one, and I'm half-way around the globe.
