Installing updates on Manjaro with Xfce:

 sudo pacman -Syu

Everything updates, nothing breaks.

Installing updates on Arch with Xfce:

 sudo pacman -Syu

Everything updates, Xorg / Alsa / Pulseaudio / systemd breaks, can't log even into TTY.

In the second case I'm somehow incompetent.

Portage doesn't*. Network manager on the other hand... and that is why resolv.conf is locked.

It never broke for me either, but one time someone fucked up the nvidia-drivers package. It actually built EGL, but apparently didn't provide that info to Portage, so other packages that depended on some EGL provider couldn't get updated. This was fixed a day later though.
