Openbox is much easier, it's floating and configured in very human readable text.

Awesome is done fully in LUA, dynamic and a lot harder to use. But it has a lot more functionality if you want it.

you can go with luakit or something similar if you want lightweight browsing. but there's no addon support for it.

as for colors, just use one of the thousands of online color services that show you all about colors in design. Just pick one that looks pretty, and it'll show you colors that are similar in temperature range, complimentary, contrasted, and practically anything else.

and just use those to rice. Some sites even let you upload pictures, so you can just throw the wallpaper you want to use into it and get all kinds of matching colors out of it with virtually no work (aside from actually editing everything yourself)

Blackbox has a few inbuilt hacks to disable taskbar, to change desktop margins and such. The problem is that they break some (or all?) fullscreen 3D games, but if you disable the hacks, your desktop margins will be messed up after you finish playing. I use bug.n for window positioning so margins are not a problem because bug.n uses its own \ disregards Windows'.
