Times when /g/ was wrong. I'll start:
Retina displays taking over the market.
'We don't need high resolution displays"
"High resolution displays are pointless"
And now, retina quality displays are here and winning.
Holy fuck the anal devastation is wonderful.
>GNOME handles it very well.
Bruh GNOME is on the level if not worse than Windows.
Until Wayland replaces xorg entirely there's nothing to hope about proper hidpi support for linux
You're confusing /g/ as a collective with a few mouth foaming mac hating retards.
iirc when the retina MacBook was announced the consensus was more like;
>Dat screen, shame it's on a Mac.
Gnome has gotten a lot better for workflow and ease of use, but it's still inferior to KDE 5 in terms of beauty.
GNOME = a 6/10 butterface that gets the job done
KDE 5 = a 9/10 supermodel that shits herself when she has to blink and talk at the same time
Go use Fedora 23, everything works perfectly.
Not truth. Why not just stick to 768p, faglord? A crisper display is always better. Current gen integrated graphics can handle the resolution except when gaming.
I've seen dialog boxes for official included windows programs that were fucked up with display scaling.
As far as the 3rd party devs being lazy fucks, I simply haven't had this problem on osx. I haven't seen a low DPI window in years under osx. It even handles full screen games with aplomb.
On Windows (yes, even windows 10) I constantly need to fiddle with compatibility mode or adjust the scaling to get new programs to run the way they should.
I was here when the original "Retina" iPhone came out.
Holy shit was there a lot of "This shit is a completely useless waste of battery life", "It makes no difference at all" and "iSheep are just being sold snake oil". It was made even more cringeworthy a year or two down the line when every android device maker out there started putting high DPI displays into their higher end devices left and right and the same idiots were gloating about how "iSheep" were totally butthurt over android devices having high DPI displays.
But yeah... The thing about fanboys is that everything the products they're fans of don't have is completely useless and a waste of money and everything they do have, but their competition doesn't is somehow always super important. Other than that, when the devices they're fans of get something their competitors got long before the devices they're fans of always had those features and are never copycats or "stealing", but when the competitors get something their devices had first they're always copycats and "stealing".
Probably. Just as an aside, how do you deal with the shit, shit, shit display on current think pads? The display on my T420 has a viewing angle of like 4 god damn degrees and the color saturation is literally 20% of the saturation of even my macbook air. No competition with my rMBP.
What, should we stick with 1080p then? We need to drive display resolution up to the point of not being able to discern individual pixels, that is the obvious goal.
I paid 1200 for my Macbook Air, and its screen is miles ahead of my shitstain T420. Better saturation and viewing angles. Almost like an IPS panel.
I'll ask, why are you so shit at technology?
>I paid 1200 for my Macbook Air
>mactards actually brag about paying $1200 for 1366x768 ultra shit tier TN
TOPPEST OF KEKS
Am I the only one who thinks that there is some charm in pixels? They're so comfy and pretty.
Pic not mine.
The whole rationale for the Air series of Macbooks is not speed/resolution but battery life.
Given the secondary aim of lightness the size of the battery is important.
So Apple uses components in the Air that are economical on power. Low speed SSDs are lower power than either high speed SSDs or HDDs.
Similarly, Retina screens have much higher power demands.
>lolol macbuk ayr scrn iz so gud!
>th-th screen duzen madder!!
lmao @ ur lyfe
I don't see any advantages about hires display on phones but I see many on an e-ink display. I'd like many more advancements on these screens. It's time we have crystal clear white and dark white on these bitches
Higher DPI is good and now it's cheap and widely available it's nice. It was never a deal breaker but it's nice to have say a 1080p 13 inch laptop. Or a 1080p phone.
It gets retarded up at the pissing match level though 5k 27 inch is just not worth the cost. Sure when it's old tech and it's cheap I won't turn it down but again it's not a deal breaker.
By and large we should all be happy we don't really have to see pixels anymore, and largely that's universal across phones and laptop and desktops.
Any more than what we have now is gonna start getting into audiophile territory, it'll just be autists trying to one up each other.
>muh muh hidpi
>99.999% of mactards still have less actual workspace than 1366x788 with their shitty glorified 2x scaled 1280x800
iDiots don't even understand what they're bragging about.
>we upped the resolution so high that text is completely unreadable on our tiny screens, so we're scaling everything up so you have less work area than 1366x768
Retina is literally a meme.
Posted from my 1080p laptop with 1080p worth of actual workspace. :^)
can confrim, I played around with some windows laptops that had a QHD display or some shit, the default scaling was 200%, it made it feel just as small as 1366x788
My only gripe with apple is they always pick these weird ass non standard resolutions, fucking why ??
>MacBook Pro 13" retina resolution
>...divide those numbers by two
>MacBook Pro 15" retina resolution
>...divide those numbers by two
US MACFAGS ALL GOT DOUBLE NIGGERED
>>MacBook Pro 15
>divide CPU power by three
All of you posting about small workspaces can stop posting because you actually don't know what you're talking about.
Unlike on Windows OSX actually has decent scaling, you can have a 1440x900,1920x1200 or even 2560x1600 workspace - it's totally down to user preference.
We get it, you don't like Apple product, but at least form a coherent argument that doesn't make you look like a bunch of buttmad trolls.
>STILL less workspace than an antique T60p with 1600x1200 IPS
This. I can't stand when people try to speak with authority about things they have no idea about but I've grown tired of arguing with people over the same shit here so let them bask in their stupidity and ignorance.
Posting from my 15" Retina Macbook which has a 1920x1200 workspace while still being far sharper than your low PPI 1080p screen.
>all this damage control
>mactards whine and complain about 1x scale on other hires laptops
>pretend 2560x1600 is usable on macshit 13" screens
toppest of double standard damage control keks
No you wouldn't because it would be trivial to trade your macbook or sell it for a 1080p laptop but you have kept it because you know it's superior to most other laptops you could get. Just trying to get in on that macbook hate circlejerk like a bandwagoning faggot.
Actually I own a ThinkPad W520 and a Surface Pro 3 as my two daily drivers. I don't use any Apple products because none of them suit my needs - but I know this because I actually spent the 10 minutes needed to educate myself on how their products actually work.
>From an anti-apple troll
Forgot my image for the first part of my post.
Most 1080p laptops are 15". It's really not that bad at all. I usually use the 1680x1050 mode anyway.
yes and 1080p on a laptop looks fine, make text for example 1/4 of the size and its straining on the eyes.
High PPI is great because it makes text looks very crisp, but without scaling shit is just too small.
>for half the resolution
>for a third of the CPU
>for a fourth of the GPU
