What is the best IDE and why is it Visual Studio 2015?

Text editors are for autists.
>>
Although I will admit VS does have some handy features, I honestly prefer to work without an IDE.
>>
My OS is my IDE
>>
So, VS2015 wanted to update, so I let it, after it completed it made me restart the computer and it gave me one of those percentage screens that you get after a windows update.
It stopped at 100%, after about 1 hour I googled it, on MS support pages it told me to reboot, so I did.
It now told me that windows update failed and it was reverting to pre-update.
After 30 min of this, my computer seemed to boot just fine, but then started to throw BSOD's left and right.

Best IDE, indeed.

Literally sitting here trying to get this sorted right now.

my biggest beef with Qt Creator is that you can't enable C++11/14 support for the code model in external Makefile projects. the option is only available if you use a project that's managed by Qt Creator itself. fucking obnoxious if you want to write your own Makefiles

Yea qtcreator works best if you stick with qmake. It supports cmake but it doesn't work as well which is annoying since that is what everyone else uses.

If you write your own makefiles, why not just use a text editor with build support?
Kate is good for that.

Notepad++ for da webitty sights

Command Prompt and PHPMyAdmin for da storage of da dataz.

VS for teh megga autismals.

Nah, to be fair, it's a'ight... I fucking hate using VB, though. The language is metrically fucked (primarily because it's bound to the .NET framework and Windows API...)

And I don't like using VS for other things, because the goddamn C/C++ compiler built in throws in a bunch of bullshit libraries I don't want, because cross-plat app is best app, no doubt.

>>
>>52369656
its a pain in the ass to use.

its easier to have a text editor where you can immediately start writing code, and compile it hassle free.

visual studio hides allot of shit from you, and changing little things requires that are burried in menus upon menus, taking away from time that could be spent coding.

secondly I hate to use VS for MASM assembly, it took over an hour to finally get a test program to compile because of how VS is set up.
vs using NASM + text eidtor, spend 5 minutes getting NASM and NASM syntax highlighting set up, good to go.

IDEs have their place, but genreally unless you're on a team with a HUGE code base, text editors are better

>>

>>
>>52369656
do you really start up visual studio, make a new solution, and do all that other shit every time you want to write a program for something? with emacs literally all i have to do is type this:

emacs fuckyou.cpp &
g++ fuckyou.cpp
>>
VS doesn't play well with GNU Make and MinGW. I use Sublime Text 3. The nice thing about text editors is that I don't have to use a different one if I want to change languages or build systems. Also, I can have multiple cursors at once, and can evaluate Ruby inside the editor for coffee generation.

Yes, absolutely.
And you will never get a job.
And also you will never do something useful.

Its not about how you start coding something it is the smallest part of the procedure.

Also there are tons of features in those IDE-s which can help you with coding.
For example VS it has a lot of useful extensions which works out of the box, and makes your work easier and better.

If i want to script something i ll use a text editor for it because its enough.

- the most bloated software ever
- install is several gigabytes
- starts about 2 times slower than eclipse and is generally unresponsive
- lags for approximately 5 secs each time you start debugging
- can't delete project files on disc
- doesn't print stack trace when running without debug
- shitty project management system, no good list of past projects, always have to browse the drive
- unit tests show less info than other IDEs and the messages get truncated so you can't usually even read the whole message
- doesn't show in the project view which files have errors
- each version is somehow incompatible with others
- TODO view is masterfully hidden away
- doesn't let you type things that conflict with your formatting options, forces you to change the settings for each different file
- shitty editor
- shitty 2-key shortcuts
- shitty debugging
- "A debugger that can't single step as fast as you can hit a key has made some poor design choices." -John Carmack
- one OS only, how's this not a huge-ass downside?

Not saying this because I like those tools but how about you try doing that on a whiteboard. It's incredibly impractical because what you're doing generally when programming is an iterative process. Text editors are lightweight and great for scripting languages, plugin development, widgets, etc. But yeah, usually when I see somebody shilling Vim or eMacs, I assume they are unemployed with little programming skill because no large company would put up with that shit.
