Uh huh. Aside from your own personal principal reasons, what does it actually do that Windows can't? In practice, I mean. Day to day improvements for a non-technical (no coding knowledge, no deep hardware knowledge) user? I'm waiting.
Uh huh. Aside from your own personal financial reasons, what does it actually do that Windows can't? In practice, I mean. Day to day improvements for a non-technical (no coding knowledge, no deep hardware knowledge) user? I'm waiting.
Gives me access to my hardware. Doesn't charge me money. Works a lot faster than Windows saving me time. Provides me with a secure environment, with less risk of malware and viruses. Don't you know all this already?
>>52326077 It's much easier to do something in ubuntu than windows for someone with no experience of computers. Anyone who have a parent or grandparent with windows get hundreds of technical problems every month and they get no problems at all if they use something like ubuntu. Esier to use, no chance of malware, nothing breaks and it is super stable. Things break in windows all the time for seemingly no reason and need a restart with every update, which is why they use debian on the space station and not windows.
>>52326077 >Wastes time. You use Linux when you want your PC to be a hobby/toy. What even? I changed from wangblows to gentoo full time a year ago and my productivity remains unchanged. In fact, I have got more time than before, since installing software boils down to executing 'sudo emerge softwarename' and there is no instability whatsoever.
It's also more secure, and freetype + infinality + patched poppler + fontconfig-ultimate make for the absolute best font rendering ever. The only thing that's slightly lacking is (radeon) GPU performance, but the gap is not even that massive nowadays and gets smaller with each release.
>>52326112 Nah, I set my relative's labtop up with Linux Mint. They can use it no problem. The same was true of windows. Unity made their head spin. If someone else sets it up for them, most people that just casually check email and facebook can get by on either. The problems start cropping up when you need to use specific software.
Malware will work on Linux just as easily as on Windows. There is just a lower risk because less Malware is written for Linux, as Linux is way less popular. However, it does still exist.
Dude, things break in Linux all the time. We aren't talking about space stations, we are talking about Desktops.
>>52326146 You realize that windows has similar solutions, right? Look up chocolatey.
A better question would be what windows can do linux can't? Why would any sane person use windows? If you get paid a lot of money to do so, then I can see a reason, but as a personal computer? People would only use it because someone forced it upon them when they bought the computer.
>>52326077 If you're like me and the software you use is available for GNU/Linux, I can install it in far less time, and use it without thinking about it or the OS bothering me. In comparison Windows will pester you for updates, and upgrades to 10 which it will download in the background for you, pretty much any AV software you use will annoy you, Flash will annoy you, and then you just want the computer to shut down but nope it decided that now is the time to install them updates.
>>52325854 It's free as in freedom and beer Nothing else. Except those two Windows offers even more. >Linux users are programmers Not really. Its just that those who care about trying another OS are usually the ones who are interested in programming too. You can just as well learn it in Windows. You can try Linux out of curiosity but unless you are some socialist faggot who hates corporate you are likely to go back.
>>52326222 >If you're like me and the software you use is available for GNU/Linux, That's a big IF and has nothing to do with what I said. Plus no one really cares if it takes 11 seconds to install instead of 10.
>>52326250 I don't know what your issue with it was. At least from when I started trying it out, it never seemed to be any worse than apt-get or yum.
>>52326203 >doesn't care about being spied on. This is the interesting development. They conversation has shifted from why should I not have free speech to why should I care about surveillance?
I get it. "most people" don't use the essential freedoms like freedom of speech, freedom to gather, or freedom to share ideas so they think it doesn't apply to them. But the reason it applies to everyone is that WHEN you need it, you should be able to communicate securely without the man in the middle attack (facebook). You should be able to run your applications on your computer without signing up for a service. You should be able to study, share, improve and use the applications on your system. Even if you don't actively use these freedoms, taking them away from everyone is harmful to humanity.
It's also more secure in the right hands because you could review the source code (when installing from source) or use the package manager which in most distros downloads from repositories with thoroughly inspected software. One doesn't really need to run antivirus software on Linux like one must on Windows.
It also stores files such that one won't have to defrag which is a nice bonus.
In the end it's still just an OS. With advantages and disadvantages. I personally like it because I don't have to worry as much about viruses, I don't do any heavy gaymen, and because I'm intererested in learning more about computers. Others have different needs therefore have different preferences and I can respect that.
>>52326307 Yes but when installing some obscure software by exe you have to review to make sure you're not getting some POS adware on your computer that is a potential pain in the ass to remove.
>>52326213 >better hardware compatibility Windows 7 and before still don't have a proper process scheduler for bulldozer era CPUs, causing some significant performance problems for the entire generation of chips. And because Microsoft refuses to release an sp2 for 7, only 8 and up have an appropriate scheduler.
Windows only got modern Bluetooth capabilities in 10 like for instance allowing an audio sink to have multiple sources.
Windows still doesn't have generic mtp support without downloading a driver
Windows doesn't have USB tethering without installing a driver package from the mfg site.
Windows can't support virtual resolutions if the driver doesn't provide a utility to set it
Windows can't support plugging >3 screens into a single gpu unless you use a hack like eyefinity.
Windows simply does not support promiscuous mode in networking hardware (server versions might)
It really depends what os you have been using and whether you can be asked to relearn it if it pays off in the end. For casual computing needs, some mainstream softwares, media editing and games windows is just plain more suitable, with less meddling, hassle, emulators and crap like that.
If you're interested to delve into computers, programming, trying new things and are bored of windows, Linux is for you. You can dual boot both
>>52325854 -Being easy to maintain -Easier automatisation of routine tasks -Easier to costumize for some workflows Of course you can still use Win95 if you just want to browse kikebook or your 'work' requires office
Windows only started spring gpt since 8, a decade after Linux and osx
Windows can't install to any disk other than the first one on the first bus controller
Windows has to reinstall a driver each time you move a USB device to a different port
Windows supports an arbitrary limit on ram in a system, orders of magnitude less than the 64bit limit
>>52326560 Oops, didn't realize. No generic mtp support is pretty shitty considering all windows phones use it, and all android since 4 do too. That's a different driver for every single device, most of which are newer than your computer so the driver isn't available in the microwave repo for that os
>>52325854 It can run all of my required software while taking less than 8GB of disk space. Also for free without pirating any software. Also it boots in 20 secs from my hard drive and shuts down in less than 5 while my windows 10 laptop shuts down for 2-3 minutes. Also it loads DotA 2 and CS:GO quicker than windows, and the games dont crash randomly like on windows. Also it lets me emulate an xbox controller of my shitty genesis p44 to play every game that has a native xbox 360 controller support and is availble on linux/wine. >inb4 there are no games on linux 41/72 in my library and only game i miss is farcry 3. Also it lets me install system and software updates in less than 10 minutes (fedora is slow) while downloading 300mb of data , while windows takes a few hours (windows7 , 10 takes up just stupidly long time to install them before reboot) , needs 2-3 restarts and downloads 120mb of security updates. All of that aside , there isnt much difference to me, fonts are prettier in Libreoffice on linux vs windows. I dont use word cause i have an oreginal 2007 and it lacks features vs Libreoffice writer
>>52326301 >Plus no one really cares if it takes 11 seconds to install instead of 10. Wasn't talking about that. I could sudo apt get install and list all the programs I want and I'm done with it. And at least for me Cinnamon is damn near perfect out of the box. It took Windows 10 to catch up to it.
>>52325865 kek >buy soundcard >no drivers exist for it for linux, find that installing them on windows could work anyway >boot into windows, install, restart >it works fine >boot into debian >still works well >wake up a minute ago, boot debian >any sound that the system plays through the sound card results in a long burst of white noise until several seconds after the sound stops
a few examples/commands that I find better under GNU\Linux (ubuntu 14.04 LTS to be more precise): -chmod +x xyz -ps -aux | grep xyz -kill -9 xyz_pid -dpkg --list -speed of the OS -I know exactly what it's doing, and I know that nothing else is running that I didn't gave permission to run (in the background)
and I don't have this constant feeling, that I'm being watched by Microsoft. no data is collected from me on my computer by my own OS.
>>52326768 Not him, but red cards have the "do drivers" meme for a reason. Now that steamos is a thing, people are coming up with all sorts of tweaks to improve performance. you just have to poke about. leddit was kicking around something that people were reporting ~10% boosts with.
>>52326736 i forgot to add that i have a hp printer/scanner and i even though i use a NAPS 2 for scanning on windows so its simple 1click scan like SimpleScan on linux , i dont have to install shittone of hp drivers and updates and cherrypick shit while here it just works out of the box and updates with the system instead of slowing windows boot time further.
>>52326768 i have an msi nvidia gtx 760 with 358.16 drivers. dota has 120fps min on every graphics setting (even on lowest 640x480) and 220fps max , cs go has 300+ fps if i let it but it causes housefires. Try using the blob drivers. i game at 1080p, only game that lags behind windows i have is borderlands 2 - 120-50 fps while windows had around 130-80 on max detail (without physx)
>>52326784 If that bothered me so much I'd be using something user friendly and arch-based like Antergos or Manjaro. I've got about 3-4 programs that aren't in the default repositories Opera (which adds its repo during install), WPS Office and Unified Remote I think.
>>52325929 it's way faster, no contest, and it never slows down when time passes.
I think it's because every shit that you install in windows wants to autostart at boot for some reason, and don't give me that shit "you can disable it" it still gets slower, and your average user won't be able to disable shit
>>52326768 also i (>>52326736) observed best performance in games on new gnome (3.16+) and unity altough i cant stand unity application switching (alt + w is fine but its slow vs gnome) also i would use willy but it feels broken whatever i do (dash doesnt see new programs until i reboot or shit like that)
by best performance i mean stable fps and no crashes. im sure that using i3 or something can give you better fps but steam tends to crash/hang on other wm/de's from my experience
>>52326250 Another anon, but no it's still kinda crappy. Guess it's the maintainer's fault and not chocolatey but a good portion of programs that I scripted to install just straight up refused to. Meanwhile Debian Jessie's avaliable packages increased compared to Wheezy and all of them worked. Only thing I have to complain about is that couchdb got dropped from Jessie, but I just installed erlang and built from source. Chocolatey is a step in the right direction, but needs more quality control.
>>52326768 try disabling vsync globally (in amd drivers i dont know if you can do that because never had amd + linux system) and in dota, maybe it tries to apply it two times (cinnamon and then dota) i had that bug with older gnome , it was lagging like hell when moving the camera
>>52327004 I don't have to install 7 taskbar tweaker (to get the same functionality as Cinnamon by default), CD burning software, audio player, video player, browser and flash, text editor, image editor, torrent client, office suite.
>>52326824 What do you mean by "red card"? >>52327020 I'll try that, thanks. I use the MATE version btw, I forgot to say it >>52326914 GNOME? So maybe if I install Fedora/Other distro with it by default/Install it on Mint? I mean, I don't mind about reinstalling or changing distro, can test whatever I want to
>>52326887 >Be me >Making a new sound card >Make drivers for the mostly used OS >don't make drivers for shitty OS no-one uses >People complain >get called a nigger for not releasing shit that cost me money to make >MFW
if u wanna do server dev stuff, u pretty much need linux. all of the software is for linux. if u use windows u need to use unofficial out of date ports, or in some cases there aren't any ports at all. the server community is def. linux
>>52327081 I tried using mate, love how feature full it is and how quick it loads but its compositor is broken (vsync cuts the screen in half) - it may be an nvidia thing. Really try ubuntu/unity first since its the supported distro for steam. install steam from ubuntu repos (not site) and get newest amd non free drivers. Fedora can be a headache for setting up (at least for me, but you set it up once and it works). If it will lag for ubuntu/unity it will probably lag for other distros too. Try LTS first , i think willy is just broken
>>52327217 no, but using a slow DE will make the computer slower. I don't see what the problem is here. There is so many alternatives to unity that people complain about it. Ubuntu is the main distro for a lot of people though, so it is valid to point out that it is bad.
>>52326026 >Much faster than windows especially on an SSD. Free from corporations.
it's not really free from corporations though. ms, intel, redhat ect are all dependent on linux one way or another. Hell they all contributed to it's development and now, with systemd being used for a lot of distros, it's heavily manipulated by corporations. if you're talking about the kernel alone, then it's even worse.
>>52325865 works* as long as you are not using ati/rad, not trying to game, using common hardware. Uncommon stuff is unsupported and will cause a kernel panic. Also make sure you don't end up in dependency hell trying to install something that is a small project. Time to fork something and abandon it 5 days later but leave it shitting up the software waters on git. >works as an INTERNET browser right ? NO FUCK NO WHY WOULD LINUX BE USEFUL IN THE INTERNET SPACE >need it to further education for certs through CBT NUGGETS, Icollege, even fucking youtube. >>52327141 >be you >make a new soundcard and drivers >dont release drivers open to the public so it can be supported by some neckbeards instead (or in addition to) of your own paid team , also making the product buyable for a broader audience. cmon anon its not like people buy the drivers for cash, you just need to focus on making better soundcards than your competition from now on. >but i dont wanna make better hardware than other people i just want cash oh... nvm then
>>52327452 >Debian is fast and stable >I know , but it lacks new software for general use and testing can get critical bugs for a long time >hey how about we take testing, preconfigure it so it works out of the box ,and maintain packages from upstream so they get security updates in time >hey thats seems cool , lets do it some time later >hey that new gnome 3 breaks everything and is unusable >lets fork it and maintain it ouselfs so that never happens again in the future unless we want it to happen >ok guys it seems not so bad idea some time later >guys gnome 3 is ok now >we cant trust it anymore ,lets keep developing unity on our own >but people call us bloated >they can use other DE flavored ubuntu distros >oh ok.
it was more like this anon. Unity is just a DE and has little software that forces you to use it.
>>52327662 Consider that it's a tripfag. Why would a sane person go out of their way to make sure they have an identity in a forum that is anonymous by default and has no capacity for persistent identity? Why would they announce to the world (and any archiving service) that they happily participate with extra effort in a community widely known for its hostility and ville nature? I posit that tripfags are borderline clinical narcissists and thus fall outside of the use of the word "sane"
>>52327746 tripfagging helps you identify yourself for just a single thread, for example to avoid confusion. Its not like you can shitpost so much on a technology/consumerism general board so someone will track you down irl
>>52327832 >not knowing which posts are your own Clover even highlights them for you, and each reply has a (you) added. The only reason to trip is to confirm an identity when it is actually relevant, say for instance OP, or a particular app developer. 4chan simply doesn't support casual identities like other services
>>52327955 it can if you use nvidia/intelHD laptop and every combination of --backend --vsync --glx-swap-method has another stupid bug. And when u set it up right, firefox doesnt render little changes on a page without scrolling and you just wanna die. its quick once you learn the manpage though.
>>52327959 My mistake, I got caught up on the you part of >helps you identify yourself a trip is never for yourself, only for others. Traipsing around the board with it on like it's an account name is what I'm calling narcissistic
>>52326146 Do you realize the amount of autism it requires to reach a point were you can install Gentoo and learn everything you needed to keep that system stable and install what you install with no problems?
>>52328114 you would waste it on gayming otherwise anon. That way you learn some elasticity, and practice learning in general.
>>52328145 to install gentoo you basically need to read english and be able to google. As for learning if you learn how to maintain one system u can easier learn other things in the future. noone forces you to use gentoo as main driver , it is suppoesed to be different for people that will compile a simple system for their hardware to gain performance/disk space or learn about making their own distribution. If learning about optimizing software for specific hardware is wasting time then what isn't
>>52327710 You forgot Mir, and the "joy" of working with it. Unity is just a DE, a DE that doesn't play nice with any other distro. Also, they don't trust Gnome 3, but have no issue with Systemd, pulseaudio, or anything else that was developed by the same people who devised Gnome 3. So they can't hide behind "trust", when they've adopted half the entire ecosystem that came from the people they say they don't trust. They just have a pile of snowflakes on top of Debian testing. They offer Unity as the one replaceable component, and every alternate flavor runs into some issue or other, with Kubuntu being horribly, horribly broken pretty much every .04 release, Xubuntu intermittently spazzing with their snowflake compositor, and Ubuntu GNOME inexplicably stuttering doing simple stuff. 4 years I've hoped Ubuntu would actually make headway, and every release just disappoints more and more.
>>52330404 Why do our "news" agencies all seem retarded? NBC can't get anything right CBS is run by amateurs who don't know what they're doing CNN can't keep their stories straight Fox panics over everything
>>52331850 >lower Yeah right. Good luck finding competent Linux developers for cheap. The real sell is "done on the first try" and "updates that benefit you and don't demolish your deployed infrastructure" as any enterprise IT will tell you every 2nd Tuesday
>>52325854 My reason for using Linux is because I enjoy the various DEs available like enlightenment or FLWM. It can be more lightweight depending on your distro. I'm currently running tiny core plus I an old laptop with an athlon 2000+ and 1gb ddr ram. It gives me more options for my hard drives file systems. Did you know ext4 doesn't need to defrag like ntfs does? Did you know there are error correcting file systems you can use that prevent bit rot?
On my desktop I use windows because muh gaymes. But on my 2 laptops I'm running Linux. Tiny core and Linux mint.
1. software and system updates, Windows update will never compete. 2. virtualization and container technologies. 3. LLVM/Clang support. 4. great font rendering OOTB. 5. workspaces, window on top, tabs on the file explorer, customizable keyboard shortcuts 6. native SSH/SSHFS 7. Support for almost all file systems. 8. UNIX shell I can go on...
>>52334159 I had a storage partition set to NTFS so that it could be shared between Linux and Windows.
I was using a HUION H610pro graphics tablet. I did eventually get some basic functionality out of it by installing some other drivers, but it never fully worked and never registered the function buttons.
Once you had a wire connection and could download updates, the wireless worked fine for me in Mint and Fedora, but like you, they didn't work for me out of the box.
EXT4 still needs rarely defraged, and Windows automatically defrags for you in the background, so it's basically a non-issue on both systems.
>>52334135 >workspaces I never used that shit even on Linux. I never understood the point.
Yeah that's not the problem, the problem is your usage patterns are being sold to advertisers. And once they manage to force some bullshit law through, the NSA backdoor will be used to prosecute you for torrenting shit. You don't torrent? One day they will prosecute you for a copyrighted image found in your browsers deleted cache.
>>52333973 tfw i never got my wacom bamboo tablet to work on windows (since vista) and its the same for 3 of my friends (smaller bamboo and newer medium one and 1 intuos pro) cause the drivers fail on boot, and on linux it works out of the box on every distro i tried since forever :>
>>52327576 >you just need to focus on making better soundcards than your competition from now on.
It works on Windows (where the target market is) why the fuck would i care about wasting that much time and resources to >1% desktop market share. I care about the Windows market (Where I can make money). If my sound card does better than my competition does on Windows I will make money (hopefully the labors worth of value plus some).
