MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) running latest OSX. It was supplied to me by my work (software engineer). I'm usually a Linux girl but once you fix some of the weird window management parts OSX more or less feels like home. I jettisoned most of my personal computing devices apart from my phone, but I used to have a Thinkpad collection running several different Linux distros. I was quite fond of my T60 running Gentoo, but I need more modern hardware than that if I want to be able to do anything fun on it. I'm going to be looking for a new laptop pretty soon and I haven't made up my mind between a Mac and something else. I'm not even sure what the good laptop brands are nowadays. Any ideas, /g/?

I meant in terms of build quality and the like. Do you need the round sticking-out battery for decent battery life or can you go without it?
>>
>>52322318
build quality is fine, the lid assembly isn't as rock solid as my t400, but that's to be expected, it's only 2/3 the size.

I'm using the small 3 cell battery it came with, it doesn't stick out and it lasts about 3.5 hours with linux
>>
>>52322205
>>52322249
I'm not really into anime. I watched Evangelion when I was a kid, that's kind of it? Oh and I did see some JJBA at one point I guess.
I know lots of people think I failed at life or whatever, but I do pretty well for myself. I have a well-paying job that's fun and engaging, I'm married to a hot lesbian who stays inside all day with me, and my family is very supportive. I really don't care if some lonely neckbeards on 4chan think I'm pathetic.
As far as the way I dress, I personally prefer just jeans and a tshirt, but that tends to make it harder to pass outside, so I don't really have a choice.

Anyway, back to laptop discussion.

>>52322053
I've heard of these but remember the build quality being mediocre. I don't really care if it comes with Linux or not, I'll just install it myself. I'd rather just have something solid for a decent price.

>>52322287

Most people i.e. American adults are overweight ergo they are not healthy. If they were skinny, at least they would stop being an eyesore for all parties involved including themselves. I agree with you that there's a happy medium, but most people, girls included, only gain weight over time. 100 is a good weight to hover around for as long as possible if you're short. My mother was 5'4" and 100 for the longest time in her fifties before she lost the time to exercise.

>Ever
He talks about something in >Unity< as if it's something that exists in Ubuntu as a whole. It is not.
The spyware that video is about is >Unity<'s search function, something that does not exist in versions of Ubuntu with any other DE. Xubuntu, for instance, "spies" on you just as much as Trisquel or whatever other freetard distro you might choose, because it doesn't come with >Unity<'s spyware.

I agree that Unity is a piece of shit and that the Amazon bullshit shouldn't be a thing, but please educate yourself. There is only one version of Ubuntu that includes this spyware, and that is the base version with the Unity DE. And should you for whatever reason choose to install this, the spyware is disabled through the flip of a switch in the DE's settings.

>>
>>52325852
They are a company that wants to make money.
One of the ways they make money is by selling your search data in Unity to Amazon.
Is it ethical to collect this data by default ? Maybe not.
But can you avoid this ? Most definitely, and you don't have to go through 50 workarounds and scripts for it.
You can even use their minimal netinstaller and get the same result as Debian's netinstaller with more up-to-date packages and easier PPA support.

If you listen to Stallman, very very few companies can be considered "ethical".
The guy doesn't even like Gentoo of all things, because Gentoo isn't fucking autistic about nonfree software.

Why Xubuntu if I like Linux Mint? Real reasons please.
>>
>>52326277
Not so much specifically Xubuntu as just any version of Ubuntu that isn't the base version with Unity, really.

The main reason being that Mint has some incredibly autistic changes to the stuff in its repos that can end up causing trouble especially if you install stuff from outside the official repos.
Because of this, *ubuntu is a better choice for a "just werks" distro as Canonical is generally less autistic about what they put in their official repos.

I'm assuming that what you like about Mint is actually the Cinnamon DE. You can get this on any other distro as well, you just have to install it and log out to switch, simple stuff.

Runs both Win10 and Ubuntu.

I really need to get rid of this soon. Dell decided to stop hardware and driver support too soon and want me to buy one of their new shitty laptops.

I was eyeing out a 13"mbp or mba since I don't know what pc to trust nowadays.

>If they were skinny, at least they would stop being an eyesore for all parties involved including themselves.

I see a few very underweight people around on my campus and they look like they just came out of Auschwitz. That's a lot more disturbing to see than someone who's very overweight.

Generally when I think of underweight people I associate with
>holocaust
>malnutrition
>poverty
things like that. when i think of obese people I think
>McDonalds
>sedentary lifestyle
>maybe jolly fat people (e.g. Santa Claus or John Goodman or something)

Both are somewhat upsetting, but the former is more upsetting.

My everyday laptop is a mix.
Originally I was using a Toshiba a660
>Nehalem Clarksfield 740QM i7
>8 gigs of ram max
>2 SSD's one in a ODD bay 250, 160 GB respectively
>GT 330m
>1336x766 16 inch screen
but the screen anoys me some times so I regularly swap back to my HP Pavillion DV9000.
>Centrino dual core
>3 gigs of ram max (4 installed)
>Exact same 2 ssd's only they have their own bays (mfw PATA R/W speeds on ssd's are kekworthy)
>nvidia geforce go 8600m gs
>1600x900 screen

>Currently trying to get a better used HP elitebook with dedicated graphics card for CAD
Such is life.

If gaymen, whatever.
If not gaymen or just light gaymen, Thinkpad, Elitebook, or other equivalent business laptop that is entirely Intel and optionally Nvidia based.
Basically if you make sure that your laptop has Intel hardware for >>EVERYTHING<< except obviously RAM and HDD and such, you can expect to have driver support until the thing dies from a hardware failure.

I only buy business laptops. You are clearly still from consumer laptop land, where things break. If it isn't bios locked, and there are no bios messages (like "fan failure" etc) then it won't go wrong. this is why we keep shitting up the board with business laptop threads.

the only exception are the consumables, things that can go bad over time - battery and hard drive. Which is why you buy it without and provide your own which lets you pick what you want. Memory can go bad but you can test this in a few hours with memtest and I've never even received a laptop with bad memory. it would be a $10 item anyway.
