how do sata express and m.2 stack up and pci-e?

They cant. Theyre slightly cheaper per gb but its not worth it.
The faggots wtih 4tb of shitty movies they dont watch are just hoarders.

I have a 500gb ssd and its awesome. And I dont need to worry about mechanical failure.

>>
>>52281478
What HDD is 5,200? Aren't most cheap HDDs at 5,400?

I mean, it would still get its shit smacked by any SSD out there, PCI-e or SATA, but I haven't seen a 5,200 RPM before.

Maybe I'm just an asshole, I don't know.
>>
>>52281534
I thought 5400RPM drives were gone?
They're all 7200rpm now.
>>

Now you only have to worry about sudden and unpredictable failures and write limits.
>>
>>52281601
Yea in about 15 years.

By then I will have a 5tb ssd replacement.

All I need is a 1TB external drive for backups and movies, I still have 50GB free on my OS X partition and I have a 32GB Winblows partition with 17GB free after removing the botnet and bloat.

ive been using raptors since the 1st gen 36 gig noise maker. my desktop still uses a 500 gig and i still swear by them for spinning disks

they are great drives, but they dont hold a candle to the ssds i put in my laptops
>>
>>52281534
most were 5400, but like 1 or 2 companies used 5200 in some models of their drives. when i worked as a tech a long time ago i saw them, but i dont remember it anymore
>>
>>52282553
I'm still using. 4200rpm hdd.
>>
>>52281478
So after all that bragging about MUH PCIE SSD, it isn't even that much better than the 850 evo sata ssd that I put into my macbook.

And the top 5200 rpm hard drive is obviously over USB 2.0

It's 5400 RPM over USB 2.0, the drive itself can go faster.
>>
>>52283226
>7200rpm is more than three times faster.
>>
>>52281478
I don't even care about the fact that HDDs are slower. The more important advantages that SSDs have is that they are silent and consume way less energy.
>>
>>52283360
>silent

this nigger never heard of electrical noise haha
>>
>>52283360
I'd argue that silence is a much better reason than energy consumption, unless you're using an ultraportable.
>>
>>52283360
>consume way less energy.

this REALLY depends on the model and general performance characteristics.

enterprise PCIe/U.2 SSDs can suck down 20-25W (for massively higher BW than a HDD, but still)
>>
>>52283205
his seems really slow for some reason
>>
I'm thinking of getting one. Is it worthy to get an ssd just for the OS and programs? Will it improve anything else besides that?

I don't want to buy an 120 gb if I can get 2 TB for the same price. I don't care a lot about boot times.
>>
>>52283477
Yes, using a system with an SSD for the OS is noticeably better than using a HDD, ofc the more applications you put on it the better though.

I'd suggest at least the OS, your browser, and anything you use for work (text editor, office suite, media editing suite, etc)
The order of importance is probably;
>OS
>Applications for work
>Browser
>Commonly used applications
>Games
>...
>media
>>
>>52283468
So does yours.
Any PCIe SSD with respect for itself goes above 2GB/s
>>
>>52283505
It won't make it faster to opening files on the other HDD, though, right?

This is why I'm mostly concerned about.
>>
>>52282527
>steam drive
>games drive
what the fuck?
>>
>>52283530
F: is actually not steam
A: is actually not itunes
>>
>>52283528
Most likely it won't, unless the application you're using to load those files also needs to load its own files on the SSD as well in the process.

But the time to open files from a hdd is minuscule anyway and doesn't really gain benefit from being on an SSD in my experience anyway, since loading a file is already an interruption of workflow, the difference between a .1 and .5second load is negligible compared to say waiting .1 vs .5 seconds for a window to open, if that makes sense.
>>
>>52283477
120 is so small its not worth it. save another weeks allowance and at least have some self respect to get at least 256.

you shouldnt even be paying more than $120 for a 512 gig. if that is too much then dont bother considering you dont care about shit like boot times.
>>
>>52283528
Of fucking course it won't.
>500GB SSD for OS/software/temporary files
>HDDs or NAS for storage/archiving
>>
>>52283573
Oh also I should add most files I load aren't going to max out a HDD r/w speed anyway, they'd be CPU dependent

>Disk IO as a bottleneck
You running a server or are you one of those faggots that wastes $100 to get 2 seconds faster boot?
>>
>>52283820
>being this much of a shill
a 7200rpm SATAIII HDD takes ~30 seconds to boot for windows and far less for proper operating systems.
just because you wasted money on an SSD for le faster boot times doesn't mean you should meme other people into your buyer's regret.
>>
>>52283843
But it's still a perfectly reasonable thing to improve with an SSD, no one likes waiting for boot
30 second boot would make me rip my hair out, boot into arch in under 5 seconds on my machine.
>>
>>52283843
>Uptime: 19:15:14:53
To be honest I couldn't give less of a shit about my boot times. Personally I got an SSD for the sake of not waiting for other things, such as Photoshop's slow ass startup.
>>
>>52283853
You must not have been alive when it took more than ten minutes to boot up.

if you manage to kill a mechanical drive in a desktop system you should probably just get the fuck off this board
>>
>>52286371
desu, I'm still not sure if I should have gone with two 250GB ones for RAID0 instead of one 500GB.
1GB/s reads would've been nice, and in theory RAID0 would double SSD lifetime (in terms total data written to the array) since each SSD only takes half of the writes.
On the other hand, that would also have meant one SATA port less for storage.
