Can someone explain why do people still buy Apple products when you can get so much more for your money?! I heard the hold up over time
>>
better build quality and support. also brand recognition, so you look cool among your peers. that's about it, osx is trash.
>>
>>52249054

Some people aren't on a budget. Also, use one for a while and they seriously grown on you. OSX is fast and smooth, and the hardware is well optimized to run it. Obviously it's not for young people who play games, but for both professional, and basic computer users its is great hardware, and it is defiantly very well built and sturdy.

If you have a chance to use one for any length of time do it, and you will understand why they are popular.
>>
>>52249134
i had to use osx for three years (design work) and i still think it's ass. both linux as well as windows are superior, osx brings nothing to the table other than a fancy default ui.
>>
- you can't actually get much more for your money for laptops. comparable (in build quality, size, weight, specs) windows laptops are just as expensive and usually worse in build quality

- the laptops tend to break less often than other brands, and getting warranty service is easy

- resale value is high. you can upgrade and offset the cost of a new one by selling the old one if you take care of it
>>
>>52249155
Then its not for you. What's so hard to understand?
>>
>>52249054
Best touchpads in the game!
>>
>>52249176
also this - the very best touchpads on competitors laptops are still nowhere near as good as the 2015 MBP
>>
>>52249167
you just said i would understand why it's so popular after using it for a while. i still don't.
it's overpriced hardware that comes with walled garden software. it is objectively restricting and therefor awful for any power user.
i guess if you only use facebook and youtube it's great
>>
>>52249183
I'm surprised Windows machines haven't caught up to the standard set by Apple's touchpads by now. It's key to great navigation, but it's also Windows software which isn't optimised for low power devices.
>>
>>52249229
they're all seemingly still stuck in the specs race while very few focus on making the user experience nice - this is why they get beaten by apple in the hardware department

the result is that windows laptops tend to be way better on paper than in the real world

i'm surprised how many /g/ users play into the specs race still considering how much /g/ tends to care about peripherals that make computing a nice experience (mechanical keyboards, good mice, etc)
>>
>>52249155
Personally I'd rather use OS X over linux.
>>
>>52249313
to be clear, macbooks used to be a pretty bad value compared with windows laptops, but in the past couple of years, the value between the best windows laptops and macbooks has really balanced out with macbooks retaining the edge in build quality, user experience, and service (touchpad, build quality, etc)

-posted from my Dell XPS 13 :^)
>>
Because I'm already in too deep and don't feel like migrating, and why would I? I've had not problems whatsoever because one logic board failure, which they replaced for free. Maybe it's because all my experience with PC's is with Dell and IBM, but I was never happy with the durability.
>>
The trackpad is way better than any windows laptop I've ever tested.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft software in general, their interfaces are too convoluted and bloated. Its like they don't have any concept at all and just keep cluttering stuff together, I hate that.

My workflow (mainly my software projects) became rather dependent on Unix tools, which just doesn't work really well on Windows.

I've been using a Macbook for years, and I've always been satisfied in any point thats important to me. There's nothing I can really gain from switch back to regular laptops, in the best case its a comparable device thats something like 150€ cheaper, in the worst case I'll have to do the effort of switching to Windows just to discover that I hate using the laptop or I discover that there are some hidden issues that wouldn't occur with a Mac.
>>
>>52249054
OSX is literally linux with application support. I think the file system is worse than most linux setups, but I'll take it for application support.

I get more work done on OSX, simple as.
I am a web developer and OSX has been surprisingly flexible and easy to customise for me.

Especially the launcher software Alfred, a little textbox you can trigger at any point by pressing ALT + Space through which you can launch scripts and pass arguments into them through keywords, download other people scripts, run web searches and launch or switch to programs through. It has sped up my workflow by a shit ton, and windows flat out does not have anything like it. Linux might, but I'll talk about that below.

On top of that, its the closest I can get to Unix terminal without using Linux, which I can't, because I am sorry but Linux is not used for fuck all in my industry, at least where I am living and the area of it I am in.

Could not imagine working in windows anymore, could easily work in Linux if there were just a few pieces of software available on it that I use daily.

TL;DR
>Windows is a shit

good battery life...

on the funny/awful side an apple genius told me they can idle at 200 degrees celsius with no issues, because they're built to max out around 400c. this was after bringing in my defective mbp for a replacement, didn't get the replacement(was denied because the genius said it was fine), did hit the highest score on some random site for temperatures though.

solution? removed the battery, throttles the cpu. so have to use my mbp with a cord.
>>
>>52260229
Most likely cant enter its full power state because the wall wart cant supply it without the battery
>>
>>52260308
don't know, don't care. it's the only the way to keep the temperature idling at 90-95c(nothing running except the os.) anything running causes it to stay at around 110c, rarely 115c(this is while throttled.)
>>
>>52260342
>90-95c
That will fry the chip after awhile, are you sure that is correct? no way in hell it should idle ANYWHERE close to that
>>
>>52260378
therefore the problem. the throttling downclocks it to about 40% of the speed it should get, undervolts it, etc etc.

yes it's the real temperature. took it apart and applied thermal paste to get it to drop to those numbers as well, i forget the pre-thermal paste numbers(bad batch i guess, they smeared the shit out of the thermal paste originally.)
>>
>>52260400
Sweet Jesus... what year and what kind of macbook is it? No Intel chip is rated for temps that high, the silicon starts to breakdown.

additional issues were the logic board failed/replaced, gpu died/replaced while under warranty.

>>
>>52260437
late 2007 mbp. before the unibody. it still runs. still have the paperwork.

originally they claimed the temperatures were the result of water damage(as indicated byt he water sensors) but water sensors weren't added until the next model, when i told them that they sent it away to the local plant/factory whatever it was called and said no dice, that "everything is ok." that was about 1 year in applecare, even though i had extended it to 3.
>>
>>52260485
2007 jeeze, either a conroe or penryn chip with nVodia GFX

Was that the year that nVidia had those faulty chips that were causing Macbooks to almost catch fire?
>>
>>52260558
with the mbp's, the nvidia gpus were causing a ridiculous amount of artifacting until it eventually stopped working. not sure what the exact issue was, i forget. took them almost a year to finally recognize the issue though. the logic boards were failing within weeks of being bought.

ffs i still have my settlement from the class action suit against the original ipod classic, like $3 - i never cashed it. can't trust those fuckers. both were gifts so i can't complain too much.

A million times this. I've gotten more done on OSX than I ever have on Windows. Sorry /g/ but Windows really does suck.

That said, I still use a Win 10 HTPC and love it! As long as you get rid of all the bullshit and careful not to install anything but Steam and Firefox, and VLC, Windows is fairly useful. But I would never use it for anything else.
