I have a black alps AT101W.
I fucking dropped my monitor on my keyboard and fucked up one of the keys.

Question: Do all black alps caps fit into other black alps boards?
>>
>>52179410
>>52179353
They should.
>>
>>52179461
Thanks!
>>
What is the benefit of using a tenkeyless board?
>>
>>52179506
Unless you're an accountant, you don't need that wasted space.

I can't even use that section without looking down, so I use regular numbers above the letters instead.
>>
>>52179506
I just bought a TKL because I noticed that I can't put my mouse where I naturally would put it because this exact space is blocked by the numpad. I.e. more space
>>
>>52179506
Basically ergonomics, when you have a full size board, either your homerow is too far left of your body, or your mouse is too far to the right (possibly both if you're placing it somewhere in the middle).

The number pad being on the right is a relic of the past before mice. Placing it on the left makes more sense ergonomically, plus its not like you don't know how to type with your left hand, you do it all day everyday.

Does anyone here use a Rosewill RK-9000V2? I'm thinking of getting one for $80. It'll be my first mechanical keyboard.

It's the most affordable one I can find that uses brown switches, and I like how plain it is. Colorful LEDs and backlights look cool at first but I get tired of them very quickly.

I'm mostly worried about longevity. I really don't want to pay $80 for a keyboard that will have problems in a few months, and haven't had great experiences with Rosewill stuff in the past.
>>
>>52179845
It's not a bad board. That and the Quickfire XT are great entry level boards for the price.

Not everyone is as mentally underdeveloped as you are, stop making generalizations. The numpad is fucking easy to memorize and the best way to quickly enter numbers.
>>
i fell for mechanical keyboard meme maybe 2 months ago and bought keycool 87.

so far i'm absolutely loving it. thank you anons.
>>
>>52179845
It's a solid choice. Rosewill makes good products, and if anything breaks, you can more-or-less fix it very easily on a mech.

However, if you were to spend around 20 bucks more, you can get a fully programmable and customizable mech, though it'll probably be a TKL.

I agree about LEDS and whatnot. Most people on here seem to hate it, but I'm still a pretty big fan of my old Das Keyboard 4 Pro.

>>
>>52180144
i like the numpad, its just that on a full size board its too far
if i could get a keyboard that had the numpad where the arrow keys are that would be prime
>>
>>52180284
I've been working on a custom mech design where the numpad cluster is directly to the right of the main keys cluster. You can swap between the arrows + home/end cluster and the numpad cluster with Num Lock, and it's the same size as a TKL. I think the main downside is that it's going to be pretty ugly, but I don't care much about that. Since it's a DIY, it won't be pretty anyway.
>>
>>52180341
that sounds like it would be great for general use and for work type things
i love tkl but i do have some trouble with programming homework because of the lack of a solid numpad
>>
>>52180341
What, like the CM TK or Duck Lightsaver?
>>
>>52180284
CM Storm QuickFire TK does this
>>
>>52180374
wow those are nice
the duck really looks nice. i would totally love to have that
the cm is pretty nice too but i dont like the led configuration for the num lock and and stuff at the top right
but i bet its great to type on with some new keys
>>
>>52180434
There's also the Cherry G80-1800, of which there are a few customs with a similar layout (the Compact SQ is a recent example, which is just shipping now).
>>
>>52180374
Ah wow, yeah exactly like that. I guess it figures that I wasn't the first to think of that, haha. The only difference in mine is that the second cluster is .5u to the right of the main cluster, leaving a comfortable gap between the two. There's also a few minor changes like the split-button shift and whatnot.
Do people generally think it works well?
>>
>>52180535
>Do people generally think it works well?
It's not especially popular, so I wouldn't say there's any prevailing train of thought. I've heard some people who got a TK speak ill of the layout, but someone who gets a Lightsaver probably knows what they're doing.
>>
>>52180284
well buddy you're in luck

http://gaming.coolermaster.com/en/products/keyboards/quickfiretk/

i also thought about getting something like this but the amount of keys there bothered me so i went with a separate numpad
>>
>>52180820
id get that right now if i could replace the faceplate
but i will get it eventually. i just want something in white. it would go well with my keys
>>
>>52180720
>I've heard some people who got a TK speak ill of the layout

What do you mean? What you see is what you get. I'm interested in what complains people have that you would only notice after using.
>>
>>52180905
I just remember seeing a couple comments saying it was awkward.
>>
>>52179410
up the switch and try to fix it
alternatively take the switch out of a key you dont use, like scroll lock and trade it for the broken one
>>
>>52181039
open up*
>>
>>52181039
Thats good advice, but it was actually just the key cap that is cosmetically damaged. So I want to get a replacement for it.

I could just take a cap off another key, but I like my stuff looking nice.
>>
where can i get a silver or gold leopold fc660 with white keys?
>>
>>52181792
oh i see
then yeah, any alps keyboard should work for keycaps
search for Acer 6312-tw with acer switches but alps compatible keycaps, it's very common and cheap
>>
>>52182195
Thank you.
>>
Can anyone tell me what keyboard this is?
i am talking about the smaller keyboard under the vertical monitor.
Any help would be happily accepted.
>>
>>52182352
Looks like it could be any 60% kb.
>>
>>52182352
If the picture were higher quality, it'd be easier to find out. It looks like a pok3r, so probably either that, the gh60, or the kc60. The keycaps are from the Ducky Mini, but it's not the same base.

Are Alps switches less "floaty" than blues? The springy travel before the click is really starting to make me crazy and I'm not yet willing to shell out for topre

or maybe I'll just get some light linear switch and let the bottom provide the tactility since I hit it every time anyway
>>
>>52182732
I've tried cheap chink simplified ALPS clones, and I generally like the click mechanism better than MX blues. I would say that, yes, they are less "floaty".
>>
>>52182777
cool, thanks. I'll get a sack of matias clicks and see if I like them maybe
>>
>>52180341

So...the Compact SQ?
>>
>>52180491

I ordered one.

Shipped out of Korea on 29th.

Should be arriving here (Japan) any day now.
>>
>>52183313
Did you get a tracking number, or are you just basing that on proximity?
>>
>>52183330

Basing on average shipping time between Korea/Japan. I am also assuming it is by plane and not by super slow boat.

He didn't give out tracking numbers unfortunately.
>>
>>52183357
Yeah, I ordered one too. Canada though, so I am not expecting expediency.
>>
>>52183285
Not really, but I'm a big fan of the separate arrow cluster and how he dropped them down slightly.
Mine would be more like the Duck Lightsaver or CM TK.

I haven't even designed the plate for this one yet, though, it's only in the design stage.

The one that I'm working on now is closer to the 65% keyboard, but it will fit in any 60% case, and is fully programmable. Ordered the plates less than a week ago, using two 2u keys for space also, so it'll be interesting to play around with once it's done.

I have some extra money on the side and thought about getting a MX Blue keyboard as successor to my brown switched keyboard.
Are the Majestouch 2 still worth the pricetag or are there any new / better alternatives? 3-4 years ago the filcos were the considered the best but no idea whats the trend nowadays.
>>

>>
>>52183695
You 100% don't need a ventilation fan for a single keyboard d00d

If you're really reall concerned, just sit near the air vent so that it blows some of the fumes away.
>>
>>52183771

Ventilation sucks here. So I figured I'd just get one of those nice filtered fans and not worry about it in the future.

Last time I built a board I just used a normal fan and pointed it out the window.

Normally I would not be concerned, but I am building it in my bedroom which leaves me somewhat uncomfortable.
>>
>>52183963
well, it never hurts to be safe, and it can suck if you end up with a headache from huffing flux. Just wanted to point out that it's not technically necessary, if you were in a rush to build but unable to start.
>>
>>52184019

Yea, I might do like the four corners or something.

Gotta figure out how to do stabilizers too, never put them in anything I built before either.

>>52184416
It's called the IBM SpaceSaver iirc. It's made for rack-mounted servers and gives easier access. We used to have a few at my old job, they're amazing. You might be hard-pressed to find a consumer one, but I know Unicomp makes one called the Endurapro that has the trackpoint setup, and it's probably much cheaper than buying the SpaceSaver
>>
>>52184772
I've never seen an SSK with a trackpoint and mouse buttons.

Also, IIRC, Unicomp is coming out with some sort of 60% or 65% model M type keyboard. I'm hype.
>>
>>52184319

>>
>>52184825
>Unicomp Model M SSK
I'll believe it when I see it. It's so stupid that they never made one. They sell on Ebay the instant they're listed for at least $250 each. Unicomp could sell a SSK clone for $150 and they'd sell faster than they could produce them. Hell, I'd buy one. I'm convinced that Unicomp is either on the brink of bankruptcy (despite the recent surge in mech popularity), or the guy that runs it is a drug addict and doesn't give a fuck about his business.
>>
>>52184883
NVM, didn't realize we were comparing gateron and mx as well.

>>52184885
I thought they were 35, I guess I was wrong.

>>52184890
Seriously, they're sitting on a gold mine. If they invested in some new tooling and made a modern buckling spring board, they'd be rolling in dough. Does the CEO have some sort of drug addiction?

>>52184416
Don't know. They wear out kinda fast, so I bought a box full of them on ebay many years ago. I'm on my last one. I probably fucked up posting here. Now I'll never find another one I can afford. I might have to start trying to figure out how to restore them.
>>
>>52185121

>>
>>52185165

So I got my first mechanical keyboard the other day and I wanted to know if there is anyone here that has any experience with it to see how it compares to other MK on the market. So far I absolutely love the experience and cannot imagine going back to a membrane keyboard for my home experience.

I ended up with the monoprice 50 dollar blue switch. Anyone else have this keyboard?
>>
>>52185423
I don't but I think blue switches are a fine choice as they're significantly different from membrane keyboards. I've ended up trying topre, greens, reds, browns, and blues are still my favorite.
>>

>>
>>52186189
Yes, it goes through the holes on the bottom of the switch (looking down on it)
>>
>>52186189

If the PCB supports it, yes.

But please note, Cherry MX Lock Switches have an offset LED hole.

They are pretty rare and production ended, so it is probably not something to worry about.

Having never used anything but laptop keyboards and rubber domes before, I was gifted a happy hacking pro 2. At first I wasn't especially impressed but now I'm typing on it with it sitting on top of my laptop's keyboard because it just feels fun to press the keys. The sound is obviously much louder than the laptop keyboard, but my girlfriend said she actually prefers hearing it in the background.
I've been a heavy emacs user and have always used other keybindings that avoid f-keys so I don't think I have the same problems with it others might. I was a bit worried about the navigation cluster, but I can't imagine it being a problem now for anyone with normal sized hands. The arrows feel pretty natural, and don't feel that I'm straining my hand uncomfortably at all, event to reach home.end. It's seems like it would be almost impossible to use them in a game because you'd have to constantly take your pinky on and off the fn key at exactly the right time. I don't know why anyone would use the "*+/-" under "hjnm" on the function layer.
Oh, and I've never seen this mentioned anywhere but if you use it in mac mode fn-o/fn-p control screen brightness which comes in handy.

Stop fapping.

Does anyone use alternate keyboard layouts (Dvorak, etc)? Any opinions on these?
>>
>>52188015
Unless you have some very specific reason to, I couldn't recommend using any alternate layout. There is no measurable benefit (or only a marginal one) and you will be gimped using any normal keyboard unless you can retain your Qwerty muscle memory, which people seem not to.

The problem is hotkeys. I could get used to typing text in Dvorak, but many programs set up their hotkeys with QWERTY in mind. Like how Ctrl-X/C/V is easy, or how vim uses hjkl for movement.

I got my poker II with clears on massdrop for $129.

I'd imagine the pok3r will be similar.

Is there anyway to make WASD the arrow keys on the pok3r i wonder? I like the looks of it, but I absolutely love having the arrow keys on the function layer of WASD.

I used the dip switches to turn my caps lock into the Fn button so i always have both WASD and arrow keys under my left hand. Super handy for gaming and even typing/editing text.

Not the loudest ones definitely. They're okay, and if you want to make it more silent you can always buy o-rings to it. It can be heard over a mic and probably through a door yeah, if you type furiously. But so can any keyboard be heard through a door or over a mic I'd say... Yea browns are a bit more annoying over a mic than rubberdomes, but not as annoying as any click switch ever. Go for it, don't mind the noise too much. I don't know about clears, but I'd say there's not much of a difference, at least very noticeable.

I figure my odds of getting help here are as good as any, so here goes...

I bought a Unicomp Model M a couple of weeks ago, and it basically shipped broken. Externally, the keyboard looks fine but when plugged in it basically constantly types the letter m until I press another key, after which point the letter m (as well as numerous key combinations with right shift) stops working completely. Now, this problem actually went away for a week with only minimal intervention on my part but now it's back and the keyboard is basically unusable.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be? I have popped the keycap and everything looks fine.

Yeah they really are shit quality, or at least they are inconsistent with their quality.

What bugged me was that mine was an older model with the Cherry switches, and not the chinese knockoffs they use now.

No idea how or why that double tapping started, but it showed up after about 5 months of use. Conversely I've used a WASD v2 and Poker II each for over two years and they still feel and look exactly like when they were new.

Basic guide how to perform a continuity test
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3nqlXM6nOM

As for keyboard - there should be at least two pins soldered to a board where switch is. Put probes to these points and it should form a circuit when switch is pressed (usually multimeters emit sound). If there is no sound - problem with switch, possibly spring or something else is fucked. If there is a sound, then problems could be somewhere else.

Nice try, Rakesh.

Thanks. I'll give this a shot. As I mentioned in my previous post, I just moved, and I'm probably going to need to buy a new multimeter since I don't remember packing my old one.

Is there any particular reason that leads you to believe that this is a likely problem? I did a lot of experimenting with the switch itself and found no evidence that it's faulty. Indeed, it didn't seem to matter what I did; I would either get an endless stream of m or none at all. It's also switching back and forth every few minutes between what problem it exhibits, and sometimes it works fine for hours (or even days) at a time.

So you guys would vouch for a corsair keyboard?

>>52213508
Well , I'm waiting for mine atm, but my friends had one and its worked great for him for as long as hes had it

Am I a faggot for wanting a Strafe RGB because of cool shit like this?

Definitely, haven't had a single problem whatsoever over the years with mine.

jesus christ just get some sony leds that are remote-controllable via android
>>
>>52213335
sorry, I was unaware that model m uses membrane. So now basically just check switch spring, open keyboard and inspect rivets, membrane for any damage. And it's most likely somewhere around faulty switch since if there are problems elsewhere, it would affect more than one key
>>
>>52213600
Last I checked the Model M still uses buckling spring rather than membrane. I'd wager it's an issue with the spring itself constantly completing the circuit, or something else physical, since it sounds like it was damaged in transit.
>>
>>52214514
>Last I checked the Model M still uses buckling spring rather than membrane.
The Model M is a bucking spring that uses a membrane.

It's really an aesthetic thing. Personally, I don't care much for RGB LEDs, but mainly because of products made by companies like Razer. If you think it's cool, go for it man.
Personally, I don't like the font, but the effects are nifty. I don't think there's much use for it, but it might be fun to play around with them every so often. I think the only interesting functionality that comes with RGB LEDs is that you can customize the constant color of the backlighting.
For example, you can change it to a warmer white during winter, and a cooler white during summer. I'd be happy with just being able to change white temp, and I'm pretty sure you could accomplish that with RGBs.

Anyway, TL;DR, buy what you enjoy. You won't get any better aesthetic advise than what you can give yourself. People here can tell you if the keyboard's durable, if the manufacturer is reliable or if they have good customer service, we can tell you if the keyboard's easy to repair, or if it's easy to mod, but you'll be the best judge of what looks cool to you.

k740 is scissor-switch, not membrane. You might have a hard time switching to mek from it though, since its a godlike non-mek keyboard and you WILL question your choice.
>>
>>52214645
A scissor switch still involves a rubber dome and membrane.
>>
>>52214538
Huh, go figure. I'd always thought it uses a standard copper lead for the switch below the spring. I guess the membrane itself could be stuck, that'd be a pain to repair. I guess he could disassemble a less useful switch and replace the broken 'M' for the time being. I don't see any other way for the keyboard to constantly have a closed switch.

so apparently this ( quickfire rapid-i ) is the only choice i have in EU if i want a tkl keyboard without paying stupid amounts of money for my first mechanical keyboard. Though everyone and their dog complained about LEDs dying withing months, weeks, or even days of purchase. Even the most recent review ( 2nd december ) says his leds died. Is there anyone here with this keyboard whose leds are still alive? Originally i wanted normal Quickfire Rapid but its not available here anymore
>>
>>52214776
No, that's not how the buckling spring works. I'd recommend you hop on over to Deskthority to read up on both the Model M and F.

You can always turn them off if you get a bad board. CM swears up and down that they fixed this though (which wouldn't matter if you got old stock).

Where can i buy the fc660m's in pic related? I can only find regular black/white with regular black printed caps.
>>
Anyone know where I can still get the gmk cyrllic keyset? I've been asking around but no one seems to be selling theirs.
>>
I live in the UK and want both UK layout but with Cyrillic alphabet on the caps, I noticed WASD offer Cyrillic alphabet but obviously the £ symbol isn't on this. Any suggestions?
>>
>>52214704
there are dome switches, there are scissor switches, membrane switches is something you find on microwaves. I actually meant "not dome", a good made ( read not laptop built-in ) scissor-switch keyboard is imo somewhere between dome and mechanical, while being a complete different experience from the both with its short travel distance and low profile, unfortunately there arent that many good scissor switch keyboards out there, k740 was actually the only one that came to mind.
>>
>>52215657
A scissor switch literally has a rubber dome. I don't understand why you are arguing this.

I have one simple question for you all.

Is Topre as good as they say?

The feeling of a single key on the switch tester was enough to convince me.

Currently waiting for an HHKB in the mail.

At least update the damn shipping status or something, I want my finger sex already.

yeah

>>52216069
Swissfag here. How do you get past customs? Did you let them declare low value?
>>
Ok since switches are technically going to be the same across the board then my question is, why would anyone technically may so much more for another keyboard if the products capability is the same? There doesnt seem to be this massive jump in overall quality unless you are going to different manufacturers of switches but if you go from a blue cherry mx... then why in the world would you want another blue mx

and im not talking about having one keyboard with lights and another without. I mean apples to apples here
>>
>>52216182
I contacted the seller asking if he could declare a lower value, and I know from another anon that the seller is very willing to do that (declares it at like 10% of the actual value).

I didn't get a reply regarding that from the seller, so I'm just hoping they got the message and declared a lower value before sending it out. I'll find out once it arrives, though I'm already accustomed to getting raped by import tax from when I got my Shine 4.

What canton are you from?

I have spent the last hour searching for keycaps, and anything I want is out of stock or doesn't exist.

Could someone point me in the direction of any of the following:

- White legends, black keys, thick pbt, OEM/SA
- Black legends, white keys, thick pbt, OEM/SA
- Blank black, thick pbt, OEM/SA
- SA Symbolics that is in stock

Why is it so hard to find these? Except for the last one, they seem so simple.
>>
>>52216273
I'm from Bern.
The import tax really stopped me from ordering expensive products from outside of Switzerland. Might change that though, because I may want to get an HHKB aswell, depending on if I like the Ducky I ordered a while ago.
>>
>>52216675
Oh cool, I'm from Bern too.

Which Ducky did you get?

How come YOTG has such a thin bezel compared to Ducky Shine 5?
>>
Are there any keyboards that are similar in layout to the G80-1800/G80-1900/MX-11800, or just 60%+numpad that aren't shitty?

All the Cherry ones (like the ones I just mentioned) are PCB mounted. At this rate I might just have to get a 60% and a separate USB numpad, but this is for work and the computers are shit so I might not have enough ports to do that. I also don't wan another 60% because I have a HHKB already.
>>
>>52216976
The YOTG uses the Ducky One case. Basically a Shine 5 in a different case.
>>
>>52217139
Fuck me, I should've jumped on a YOTG. I hate how big the DS5 case is.
