Summarize this age old war to someone new into PC hardware.

They both produce about same quality products and people are stupid and apple-fanboyism-grade-brand-loyal

nvidia pays people to make them look good
AMD is too poor to do the same
Normal people who knows stuff will buy AMD for the value
People easily swayed by marketing buy nvidia

pic related AMD is pretty much the dominant one in price/performance in all market segements

First of all you need to understand the basic design of AMD/NIVIDA GPU's in each category:

NIVIDIA
>smaller number of processors on chip
>Faster Core clockspeed on processors
>Less V-RAM capacity (most of the time)
>Smaller Memory bus (bandwidth)
>Faster clockspeed on V-RAM

AMD/ATI
>Greater number of processors on chip
>Slower Core clockspeed on processors
>Greater V-RAM capacity (most of the time)
>Larger Memory bus (bandwidth)
>Slower clockspeed on V-RAM

These fundamental differences in design cause the GPU's to handle Rendering loads very differently which affects the performance of games in ways
that synthetic benchmarks will rarely show you. There are two types of rendering loads in games and benchmarks and they are "Light load"
(when not all of the processors are being used) Heavy load (when all of the processors are being used and there are not enough processors
to handle all of the load currently tasked which has to then wait for its turn to be rendered)

As a result when a Nvidia GPU's are under "light" load they can render faster than AMD GPU's due to their higher clockspeeds but when under "heavy" load their performance
drops off a cliff because they have to much work and to few processors to do it all. When AMD GPU's are under "light" load they render slower than NIVIDA GPU's because
of their slower clockspeeds but when they are under "heavy" load they render faster because they have more processors to do all the work.

So a NIVIDIA GPU's "Maximum" framerate will usually be higher than a equivalent AMD-GPU but its "Minimum" framerate will usually be much lower than a equivalent AMD-GPU.
This is where the deception comes into play because "Maximum FPS", "Average FPS" and synthetic benchmark "scores" are all meaningless to game performance the only number that
truly gauges the power of a GPU and its performance in gaming is the "Minimum FPS" which is how fast the card will render frames when it is under the heaviest possible load.
>>
>>46222797
Not really, they have Cuda and other things. Also the TItan GPUS are capable of double precision which sort of make them workstation cards.

AMD(ATI) and NVIDIA have always been pretty close to each other, a couple of years one takes the lead and later it's the opposite.
>>
>>46222813
For this example I will compare a NIVIDA GTX970 (340$USD) and an AMD R9-290 (250$USD) using the "Valley" benchmark which is well known for being biased towards Nvidia GPU's
The settings of the benchmark are 1080p resolution with all graphics settings and filters set to maximum.

First the specs of the 970 which is a Zotac model
the card tested has an extreme OverClock of 1455mhz/1955mhz (Core)/(memory) and it is paired with an i5-4690K OC'ed to 4.2ghz (no cpu bottleneck can occure now)

The Result is "Maxmimum" 121.5FPS, "Average" 63.5 "Minimum" 30.1 FPS and becnhmark total score is 2658

Now for the R9-290 I will be using a Sapphire Tri-X model runing at non-OC "stock" speed of 1000mhz/1300mhz (Core)/(memory) and the same i5-4690k CPU running at 4.2ghz

The Result is "Maximum" 116.2FPS, "Average" 60.9 "Minimum" 29.2 FPS and benchmark total score is 2546

These results should be astonishing to most of you. Keep in mind I chose valley because it has a performance bias IN FAVOR of nvidia GPU's. Yes the "maximum" is
higher but even at the most extreme Overclock the GTX970 can just barely get a better minimum framerate than the AMD card running at STOCK SPEED (no overclock) when
the cards are under 'Heavy" load. Did I mention the R9-290 is almost 100$ cheaper than the gtx970?

The "score" is based on averages just like the "average" FPS. Both have a severe bias based on Nividia's higher "maximum" framerates when under "light" load and as a
result they help disguise the much lower "heavy" load performance.

its not just performance some of the marketing i have seen from Nvidia and people marketing for nvidia has bordered on FRAUD

Most people have no idea what cause "coil whine" or that its a serious design flaw in the Maxwell architecture

Most people think the 970 is more power efficient than the 290 when in really it actually draws MORE power than a 290 in order to achieve parity of performance

And AMD cards do not run nearly as "hot" as people claim they do and the ones that do have a serious overclock combined cheaply made and poorly designed cooling units

its fucking hideous the misinformation and disinformation i see in forums surrounding these two companies all to make AMD seem worse than they are and make Nividia seem better than they are

the /g/entlemen are gonna go "oh amd is using marketing" or "nvidia is using marketing" or whatever, and give you some fake statistics and facts.

Here's the thing:
NVidia's Maxwell is currently more energy- and cost affective than anything AMD has. Although, AMD are to release their 3XX-series soon, which is probably gonna turn tables.

I've personally always run NVidia for PhysX, and some damn good cuda, as well as actual fucking drivers for different OSs, which just shows genuine care for people using their products.

If you're low on budget, go with the upcoming 370(x) or get Nvidia's 960.

I am really on the fence here:

>always had nvidia my entire life
>decided to go with a 7950 on my "new rig" last year
>great performance although problems with drivers with crashes
>the card runs way too hot
>9 months after the card is kill

I'm scared to go back to AMD but they have good prices for good pieces of hardware.

The 970 uses a modern architecture and is extremely well regarded in the tech community at the moment, as the best high-end card at that price.

Temps are lower, alas bringing noise levels down, coil whine is much less likely, it can go 2-way sli with just a 750w psu, and it supports some very feature packing technologies that AMD just don't include, like G-Sync support, VXGI and MFAA.

Nvidia and its 4chan brand loyalist JDF is trying to create a monopoly which would drive the prices of GPUs up and performance down.

Many users on 4chan as customers understand the competition between major GPU companies is good for us and are not retarded brand loyalists.

I buy AMD or Nvidia based on price/performance on my budget level at the time of purchase. Tho atm i'm a bit biased towards AMD because nvidia is clearly ahead in the race.

What is?

Linux: AMD OSS (hacker) > nVidia proprietary > AMD OSS (gamer) > Intel OSS > AMD proprietary > nVidia OSS

Sure, nVidia's drivers work well, by overwriting system libraries with their own where AMD fruitlessly tried to keep up with the distribution's. But a side effect is that nVidia fucks up the rest of the community where the WINE-devs make their shit work only with nVidia's proprietary installed.

Thankfully AMD is gradually carving out their proprietary driver and will soon only leave a stump. The OSS drivers work pretty well provided you get the very latest ones, e.g. Linux 3.18 and Mesa 10.4.

Compared to Nvidia, AMD has bad everything. Nvidia is a company that treats its customers with respect and puts their company name on the line with every box they ship out. I watched a documentary on the Nvidia factory a few years back and each card was patted longingly by the floor manager himself before being packed up by emotional workmen and sent out to a happy customer. It was really incredible that a hardware manufacturer can inspire that level of belonging and sense of family. I dare you to find me another electronics supplier that is as noble and virtuous as Nvidia. In fact it's really just a smack in their face that you would even dare mention AMD in the same breath. >That means brand-new cards like the Radeon R9 280, 280X, 270, and 270X won't be FreeSync-capable. Nor will any older Radeons in the HD 7000 and 8000 series. AMD tells us these prior-gen GPUs don't have the necessary support for the latest DisplayPort standard.

Oh my god I just can't. You are so disgusting that I don't even have the words. Do you really think that mocking Nvidia is funny? Don't you realize that even with all of the evil things you've said that Nvidia still wouldn't abandon you? That's alone shows me how much they care about the customer. I mean, if I ever went broke or hit rock bottom, do you think I'd call a friend to bail me out?!? Do you think I'd call my parents?!?! No, I'd fucking call Nvidia. They're the only family that anybody ever needs.

Holy shit I'm actually crying now.

Compared to AMD, Nvidia has bad everything. AMD is a company that treats its customers with respect and puts their company name on the line with every box they ship out. I watched a documentary on the AMD factory a few years back and each card was patted longingly by the floor manager himself before being packed up by emotional workmen and sent out to a happy customer. It was really incredible that a hardware manufacturer can inspire that level of belonging and sense of family. I dare you to find me another electronics supplier that is as noble and virtuous as AMD. In fact it's really just a smack in their face that you would even dare mention Nvidia in the same breath. I bought a 980 G1 form gigabyte. Reason is that i play alot of arma 3 which hates SLI so i wanted the fastest singe core gpu.

If you are looking at the 970 get the strix from ASUS. it is regarded as the very best of the 970's. Im not trying to shill as i only have gigabyte hw right now, but ASUS is one heck of a cool company.

I just got the 980 so i have read and talked to allot of people that mount and use cards like this every day. All say the 970 is the best.

If you have no need to buy the very best, then the 960 is a very good choice aswell for the budget gamer.

AMD/ATI:
-Multiple driver issues (GPU not being detected at all after OS reinstall, drivers crashing, refusal to install said drivers, bsods)
-Slow, loud and meh
-If it eventually starts working it gives pretty stable experience (but it takes days to get it to work properly + possible OS reinstall)

Nvidia:
-Gives jittery performance, but faster than AMD in general, so it doesn't matter as much
-Drivers have no problems actually working (along with switchable graphics too, which is another AMD problem)
-Just werks, easier to use
-Control panel seems retarded in comparison to AMD's

Overall I prefer Nvidia + Intel (CPU) combo, since AMD is just not worth it. Sure, it's cheaper, but in the long run you just get sub par hardware.

Quick question that might sound stupid

If my computer is turned on but I'm not watching anything or playing anything should the GPU fan still be spinning?
I think it should be but it is not, and when I watch anything my computer crashes after about 5 minutes so it could be the GPU overheating because the fan is broken
I use MPC-hc with madvr to watch stuff
>>
>>46224433
that's really specific on the GPU, there's no "standard" for it. Some programs let you adjust your fan curves on your gpu fans if you've got something like MSI or Asus cards.

But yeah, it's pretty standard. Only silence-optimized cards like the Strix cards like stopping their fans completely.

After reinstalling it magically "popped" back into the os.
Weird as fuck.
Also had problems installing the drivers, everything else installed BUT it.
So fuck yeah, using catalyst without the driver, lol

It's just matter of comparisons I've looked up between that model and similar range nvidia gpus, I don't really have them since I did my research like two years ago and now I have a new laptop so I don't really care as much.

It really depends from the program. Overall I've had a better experience with Nvidia cards and that's why I'm just going to stick with them. If you want to use AMD, go ahead.

Fuck sake man.

Do the following-

1) install gpu-z, go to the sensors tab and look at the temperature monitors
2) Do whatever it is you normally do while monitoring the temps (run games in a window)
3) If temps suddenly spike upwards like 20c then yes, your shit is probably broken.

Sapphire Vapor-x 7950 boost
Steam segfaults if you got a dual-monitor setup
No v-sync on the desktop, even worse on secondary monitor. It's so bad if you scroll, then the text will literally jump a few hundred pixels.
Many games will either run extremely poorly, or not at all. Mount and Blade Warband and Metro 2033 + Last Light, are just a few examples.
DVI-0 is apparently DVI-1 and DVI-1 is apparently DVI-0, else no matter what you put in the xorg.conf file, you won't get the expected result
>turn monitor 90 degrees
>monitor actually turns 270 degrees
This is with fglrx, so still AMD's official driver.
Perhaps you were referring to "just" the Windows version of Catalyst, but you still said AMD hasn't had driver problems, and that obviously is just plain false.

virtualization in Linux (with XEN and VGA passthrough for playing games in guest OS) is WAY simpler with ATI than NVidia... almost all ATI cards support virtualization.. not the same with nVidia. (only some professional ones)

personally, Nvidia vs ATI is the same as Intel vs AMD....
better price/performance ratio and more power consumption (and heating) on AMD/ATI vs first monopoly holders that (nevertheless) have good hardware but abuse they're dominant position to put the prices they want.

as i'm a cheap bastard who likes to spend my money in the best way, AMD and ATI ftw

But if you disregarded all sarcasm in this thread, all you would get, would be posts promoting AMD cards.
Not a single post mentions why you should choose to go with Nvidia. None at all

fuck off
intel is just better then AMD now except in specific cases
AMD beats NVIDIA in performance though.

Sarcasm? There are literally tens of posts like this in this thread. And there is no sarcasm in them. Even if yours was, its getting hard to distinguish people who joke from the shills who actually spam this non stop.

280,280x with good cooler, a 770 if you can find cheaper
A 290 would be best but that would probably involve selling yourself if it's budget you are seeking
>>
>>46224701
how do you use filters with wildcards?
>>
>>46224734
Is it not worth waiting for the 300 series? I was looking at the 280x, is the MSI version a good cooler?

So would that bias change if/when AMD "is clearly ahead in the race?"

It is understandable (though arguably not rational) to root for the underdog but it is also plausible that you suffer from "brand loyalty" as well given your own admission if that's not it.
>>
>>46224751
is it really brand loyalty if he flip-flops to stand under the banner of whatever brand is leading?
>>
>>46224750
Of course it is,I was just suggesting if you were really eager to change now.
I don't know about MSI's cooler, but I read on a review somewhere that it has a lower memory/clock speed in comparison with other cards.
I have the Sapphire Tri-X Toxic, which doesn't get much loud and it has nice temperatures.
>>
>>46222633
>Summarize this age old war to someone new into PC hardware.
War. War never changes. Every few months each company presents a new family of cards that raises the bar and often the price. We're currently in a prolonged lull with a extended platform based upon 28nm dies. Currently nVidia is ahead with the recently released Maxwell cards but AMD is expected to regain competitiveness if not the lead with their next release sometime this year. Then nVidia will likely release refined versions of their current family of cards followed by AMD's refined versions. . . War never changes.
>>
>>46224768
>to stand under the banner of whatever brand is leading?
By his own admission he is _not_ standing undre the banner of the brand that is leading. Thus why I quoted his current bias.
>>
>>46224789
Thanks. I only really play league ATM but that will change when I pick up a new card. I could either get an MSI 280x for £180 or a sapphire tri x 290 for £215, is the difference worth it in your opinion?

Yes

I just fucking hate monopoly, see Microsoft, I'm forced to either purchase it or suffer. I don't want to see the same happen to GPU landscape.

>but it is also plausible that you suffer from "brand loyalty" as well given your own admission if that's not it.
I assure you all my cards were nvidia before the one i'm using now which is 7850 which i purchased 1,5 years ago when it was the best bang for buck in that price range. As a side not 2/4 of the nvidia cards ive owned have crapped out prematurely, but that might have been a shitty PSU.

For 35£? Hell yeah. You may want to play more demanding games in the future or even a higher resolution and the 290 with the tri-x will be a great purchase.

Yeah I actually did. What I don't understand is that in that same shop that card was 282€, and after the 970 got released the price doubled...
>>
>>46225286

I wouldn't overclock a 290 much on a 600w psu as they get thirsty fast, but a tri-x is one of the top 290 models (the vapor-x is the best but requires 2x8pin connectors vs the 6+8pin the tri-x uses).
>>
>>46225445

>>46225445
Odd that it's one of the top 290's when on amazon and ebuyer they are comfortably the cheapest. Depending on my itch to upgrade I'll either wait for the 300 series or buy a 290. Thanks /g/

Sapphire hit a home run with their hawaii coolers. Maybe they don't have a rep like MSI and crew? I cannot say but the tri-x is by far the best reviewed card of the "cheap" 290's.

>>
>>46223309

it's more like $14 if you game for ~4 hours a day on average

you're not running your GPU at full push 24/7
>>
Guys I wanted a summary of nvidia vs amd not just the current gen
>>
>>46225687

Premium price for the top card.

When I bought my 290x a few months back it was only around 60 shekels more expensive thana 290 so I splurged out. Not long after 290's came down in price (but the 290x didn't) so the gap grew making it harder to suggest the 290x.

Nowadays though if someone wants a high end card the 290x lightning (i.e best 290x money can buy) is absurdly cheap given how much of a monster overclocker it is.
>>
>>46222633
Bloods vs. Crips, still both niggin.
>>
>>46225784
If you're looking for history on both, then its a very complex history.

Nvidia had shit history. Bunch of GPU hardware deaths. Current 970 looks troubling with vram issue.

AMD has issues with power consumption but generally has a very stable and good performance. They are very price competitive. Their main flaw is power draw. Its not that much in terms of monthly bill or even yearly bill, but its enough that people are unnecessarily worrying about.
>>
Woodscrews being tossed into a fire.
>>
>>46222772
How is that?
If anything this speaks against Nvidia.
Nvidia is doing so well because they sell their overpriced undervalued cut down shit to people for insane prices and their marketing makes sure people buy it.

Amd on the other end has to put actual Value in their cards, especially for the money since they have a bad rep. because of Nvidias insane marketing.

Stupid shills

AMD:
High displacement American V8. Super inefficient, very hot and loud. But does delivery pretty good performance.

Nvidia:
European sports car. More efficient, worse value. Delivers good performance and has some nice extra features, but can occasionally have big problems/burst into flames.
