The 13-inch MBA is fine for people who like Mac keyboards, Mac OS, and don't mind having a glossy display. I'm a stickler for Thinkpad keyboards, the Trackpoint, Linux, and matte displays, so I got a T420. But MBA's have good battery life, a reasonable display (1440 x 900), and (provided you don't plan on modifying the internals) pretty solid build quality.

One of the best programmers I've worked with used a MBA for his portable. He had a gaming PC (as well as some home servers running Linux) but the MBA was a fine laptop for work on the road.

The ultraportable market is still kind of small for some reason, and Apple's offering isn't bad by any means. In fact, I think the MBA is their most sanely priced computer right now.
