Old one is dead so it's ThinkPad General time again!

My question to you guys: is it realistic for me to purchase an X230 (tablet or not) on ebay/whatever and expect a 100% working machine for at least two-three years?
The reason is that I'm far away from 'Merica so if something goes wrong, the warranty and the returns will be out of the question. (unless US Lenovo warranty will work in russia - I highly doubt it)
Is it naive or there is a chance?
Where should I buy it from?
Also, if you know: what part breaks/has faults most often or earliest in the X230?
>>

>>
>>45335692
Yes. Many Thinkpads easily last 10+ years. The X220/X230 is not quite as sturdy in my experience but five years should still be a non-issue.

Expect the display to develop white spots if it's an IPS though. Hard drives also tend to fail more easily especially if they are the 7mm variety often found in the X230. An SSD will make that a non-issue.
>>
>>45335948
I expect hard drives, RAM and batteries to fail or degrade over time, of course. My biggest concern was the display and the motherboard, because I won't be able to find quick replacements for them. But I was planning to switch to SSD as soon as possible (for both speed and shock "resistance").
Five years sound fine for me. Thanks!
>>
I have a 20 year old Thinkpad that stll works. So yes, they can last a very long time.
>>
>>45335692
I'm typing this from a T61p I got for cheap. If it's keyboard breaks I have a reserve one, battery crapped out but I had it replaced, threw more RAM in it and changed the HDD to an SSD. Fairly capable for being my "lazily lying on the couch watching stuff, shitposting on 4chan or masturbating" machine.
>>
Can't deceide between a x201 i5 560m and a x220 i5 2520m /g/entooman. How much battery life can i expect from both with 9 cell batteries and moderate use like surfing and working on documents with win7? Is the x201 display really that shitty? I want to upgrade from my netbook as daily carry and need at least 8hr of battery time
>>
>>45336190
But that ThinkPad was made in the golden age of the brand, so it's expected for it to last a long time. I don't see people complaining about them [anymore], contrary to the new ones which don't seem to survive for long.
>>
Continuing the OP:
What's the good price for mid-tier new/mint X230? I've found http://www.ebay.com/itm/LENOVO-X230-THINKPAD-TABLET-i7-3520M-MULTI-TOUCH-4GB-PREM-HD-343524U-/151443591176
But I think it's too expensive even for a new i7 model (also a fuck ton for shipping, bummer). Or is it not a bad price?

X61 with 3gb, 120 GB PNY SSD, and 9cell battery.

The fucking charger won't come till Friday but I'll prolly go by best goy and get one of those universal chargers and then return it.
>>
Is the t61/x61 still acceptable for on the go programming and muh mongolian claymation, or should I shell out more on something like a X201/T410. Don't want to be spending any money on a laptop, and the X61/T61 seem to be the chepaes acceptable-ish option.

I'm an idiot meant to say t61

But the population of the usa is nearly 50% less than that of europe! I guess it's just tje american consumerism that is the cause for ebay not being able to come up with at least one european seller under search results.

I got a used ThinkPad X200 off Amazon and it literally stinks. The smell is strong and really unpleasant, and it's not burned plastic but more like glue. I was able to remove the smell from the case with alcohol wipes but the problem is that I get the same smell from behind the fan grill when I turn it on. What did they fucking do to it?

Regardless, did anyone here have a similar experience? Did the smell eventually go away?
>>
>>45337602
Yeah, let's discuss them here because they are clearly superior! Who gives a shit if the thread isn't about them.
>>
>>45337607
Okay, I unplugged my keyboard.

Then plugged back in the keyboard and put it to sleep.

>>
>>45336297
The very newest models are somewhat less user-serviceable than before, especially the X240. Even with those, the real problem is that Lenovo borked the keyboard layout and the current touchpad sucks and gets in the way of properly using the trackpoint
>>
>>45338048
it will choke when browsing. You can learn C on it of course however
>>
>>45337428
I have this exact model and get similar battery life. Usually about 5 hours unless I go crazy with power management, but the battery is also pretty old
>>
>>45337937
What? I've had several ThinkPads before, a T61 being the latest, and none smelled like that even after staying in a box for a while. Unless you enjoy sniffing glue or bug spray you probably wouldn't like the smell.
>>
>>45338121
>it will choke when browsing
With Opera 12 on Linux it won't. Old Opera is way more responsive than Firefox/Chromium/other Webkit browsers on old hardware.
>>
>>45338113
Oh I've heard. But I've tried the X230 keyboard and I can definitely get used to it, even for programming. And it's still good for repairs and stuff, so I don't think it's bad.

>>45338530
Also shipped with 2gb of RAM which is lol worthy to me in 2014, but for the price I can't complain. Now they only have the dual core APU versions for $230+, so I think I got lucky. Damn thing is immaculate.

>>
>>45338705

>>

>>
>>45338742
Do you have a link to an official statement that the issue has been fixed?

I got the X230 tablet edition. After way too many experiences with shitty HP. I decided I needed something that would last more than a fucking year. Its just going on a year. I got the i7 model and installed an ssd. I finally feel like using a laptop doesn't come with limitations anymore. It feels almost as fluid as my desktop. For durability? I was worried at first about the single hinge design for the tablet version but it is very strong. My friend has the last model and has dropped it in mud puddles, thrown it on the ground. Basically mistreats it like a shit tier netbook but the thing is still going strong. I had an issue where water came in from the side on time. I got too impatient and turned it on 2 days later. There was still water somewhere cause the graphics would glitch out. Let it sit for a month looking into motherboard replacements. One day I thought screw it and turned it on again. Worked fine since. Its light weight and battery life of the battery still goes for at least 6 hours of use. I did buy it new. It set me back quite a bit but honestly I can say it was worth it. If I bought another shitty HP I would be looking at buying another laptop probably already so I see it as a long term investment.
>>
>>45339205
How much did you pay?
>>
>>45339232
I played around $1400 from lenovo at the time. There was some back to school deals at the time so I don't feel to salty about the price.
>>
>>45339274
How's the keyboard? It looks worse than the older design found on X200, X201 and X220.
>>
>>45339308
Its actually pretty comfortable to type on. But I wouldn't take that with a lot of merit. That is in comparison to HP's shitty attempts at keyboards. My friend that has the x220 said he liked my keyboard though. Keys at not super clicky. They have a decent amount of depth compared to newer laptops these days. I program more than I write though so I can't give too good of a review on the keyboard.

Tl;Dr I like it.

The mic I use is quite shitty and has a lot of 'built-in' noise. I use Realtek's noice cancellation on my desktop and it works well.

On my T61 with the Soundmax sound card and the noise cancellation options (Voice Enhancements/speakerpehone) on the driver don't do anything. Is there any way I can reduce the noise through any software without buying a new mic?
>>
>>45338562
The Yoga is not more powerful, it uses ULV CPU's while the X230t uses a standard voltage one. Also Yoga has soldered RAM, X230 does not. To access the hard drive in the X230 it takes one screw to get the hard drive door off and that's it. To get to the Yoga's you have to take off the whole back panel and undo several mounting screws. The battery in the X230 just slides out like normal, the Yoga's battery is "permanent." X230 has superior cooling to the Yoga. X230 doesn't expose sensitive parts of the machine while in tablet mode.

So, the Yoga is far less modular and less sturdy and it has lower battery life.

The "ThinkPad" Yoga has literally NOTHING in common with ThinkPads besides the name.
>>
>>45339449
People who (for the most part rightfully) aren't happy with the new keyboards and trackpoints. Keep in mind the people who rate new thinkpads 3-2 stars would rate any other laptop at 1
>>
>>45339583
That's not entirely true. It's more sturdy than the standard yoga, and it has the new TP keyboard, which while the layout may be crap the actual typing feel is an order of magnitude better than anything you'd get on another laptop coming out around now.

The Thinkpad Yoga is for people who wanted a convertible but also wanted an actually acceptable typing experience.

As far as buying a new, modern computer, it's pretty good. Although I'm still of the opinion that buying used from a while ago is better

Reminder that ktg is kill

Fortunately, I compiled an excel spreadsheet (inb4 muh free software) with the prices, some specs and miscellaneous notes before he took it down. If anyone's interested I can share it for others to improve (a lot of blank cells that I haven't bothered to research)

Anyway, can anyone also tell me what WD HDD is the best for general storage for laptops? My T61p HDD caddy has just arrived and I'm looking to swap the paltry 60GB HDD it came with to a 256GB MX100 and add a 1TB HDD for storage. >>
>>45339754
I use a WD7500LPCX, 750GB in my X220 because I needed a 7mm height one, but it also has low power consumption. It's also very cheap, $45 on Amazon right now. But they should both work in an Ultrabay hard drive caddy just fine.

hey guys on Arch, current kernel {3.17.3-1 i686) breaks resume from suspend to ram on several Thinkpad models (other laptops as well, but mainly on 32bit thinkpads).

I've read about that, but Lenovo said it isn't advised and should be used for caching only (but that sounds like straight up BS).

Anyway, thanks >>45340098 and >>45340115

I'm using an mSATA in my X220t.
>>
>>45340143
How's the speed? Compares to the full-sized ones or worse? Any issues?
>>
My old R40 is still capable of booting after 11 years of usage, but i kinda use it as a monitor base\charging pad.

Too bad the battery is dead otherwise i would have kept using it.

It should have the same exact specs as a regular 2.5" drive. If anything it's just slightly more power efficient.

But the mSATA slot in Sandy Bridge ThinkPads is limited to SATA2 speeds, not sure if it was updated with Ivy Bridge or not. But the speed difference isn't noticeable anyways.

There is no issues, it works just as a regular drive.

The E130 is literally an X130e without a rubber bumper lid

My 755CE was made in 1994. I still use it almost daily.

Damn that's nice.

I sold a used X130e for $220 on eBay after a clean install of Windows 7.

X1xx series are disliked on /g/ because the guide says it sucks, so they shill about it without actually using it. Its decent, the keyboard is actually pretty good, not 600X quality but still pretty decent for a ThinkPad, believe me, I've tried a bunch of em as well. I'd say its as good as a T400.

An anon here said his X120e was gud with an AMD E350 CPU, I'd say I think so as well, as the X130e had a E450 and I was surprised it played Netflix well in full screen mode without stutter. Also it has two speakers on bottom instead of one so stereo sound is pretty nice compared to my mono X61.

general opinion on my x201 purchase?
>>45340028
I feel like writing the price won't be comparable as I'm not American, it does come with a 1-year warranty though.

X201 is a pretty great laptop. Definately approved as a real Thinkpad.

are thinkpad fans loud? if so, are they replaceable?
