i used to have an 11" air. then when i got a new job i asked for a 13" air. then when that broke i got a 13" retina powerbook.

the new display is nice but i miss the battery life and the weight of the air.

I would get a rMBP over the MBA if I had the money. 12 vs 8 hours of battery life is not worth the shit screen.

However the $200 C720 does everything I need a laptop to do so I would never consider either of them.

My thinkpad does everything I need, is reasonably light and looks professional. I don't use a tablet, because I haven't found one I really like or could use for work, not even an ipad. I use a Galaxy S4 because it's decent and I got it on the cheap. It's not just apple.

That being said, apple products look pretty good, the ecosystem works well to tie things together if you're okay with buying into it completely and the battery in a MB Air is damn near unbeatable.

Still not worth the money if I'm the one paying though, I'd rather spend that on nights out or put it into savings for when I'm an old fuck. If my job gave me a macbook pro I'd gladly take it.

exactly this. chrome eats battery. you should be using safari anyways, unless you need to playback something which uses flash (which you can get around 90% of the time by using a plugin which gives mp4 friendly sites like youtube a mobile browser user agent).
also, this should go without saying but if you have Flash installed, fucking remove it. it's killing your fucking battery life (even if you already do prefer safari over chrome)

Actually there's not much difference between the ULV and regular M laptop CPUs thanks to Turbo Boost. The i7 in the MBA is allowed to use a peak 35W as long as it stays at a safe temperature. But there is no Quad Core ULV CPU, those are exclusively for Laptop i7s and Desktop i5+

I don't really feel you on the iOS devices but you're dead right about the macbooks. I can't think of a new single non-apple laptop that's worth a damn ever since lenovo fucked up the thinkpad line. I bought a 13in rMBP earlier this year and love it. Obviously I still do just about everything on my desktop but I've been surprised by how capable this thing is, especially compared to by old iBook.

Well that all depends upon your computing needs. There is a time and place for those apple devices (as cultural icons of wealth and such, as well as easy-to-use and easy-to-access devices. AKA, just werks), but for anyone doing substantial work, a higher end laptop may be necessary (including a mbp). As for the iphone and ipad, there are other options. It is no longer the case where apple dominates the rest of the phone and tablet market. There are android and windows phones and tablets that perform equally and in some cases better than their apple counterparts for the same, or sometimes less, amount of money. In the end it all just comes down to what needs the individual person must fulfill, any economic boundries that must be kept within, and personal preference.

Really? My knowledge of the tablet market is a little rusty, having not bought a tablet since the Nexus 7 2012, but back then the Nexus 7 kicked the iPad mini's ass in terms of hardware. I don't know how much has changed since then, but even now I'd think the hardware is at least equivalent. As for the timeless ios vs android debate, it comes down almost completely to personal preference and how you plan on using the device.

I ran every major custom rom and many smaller and device specific ones.
Contract was up on the Nexus S when the 5S/C came out I jumped ship and got a 5C

Yes it is, intel graphics are underclocked shit on mba's, can't even handle GTA SA on max without shitty fps, the ipad air has a quad core cluster GPU that works perfectly with the ARMv8 A7 and M7 chip, that's why ipads can play GTA SA on max, at full Hd resolution. (The IOS is a very light system as well, and while gaming, all other aplications are at standby mode.

Also, i get more tha 7 hours of constant gaming on it, mba can't even get 3 hour of light gaming.

All of that proves that ARM with PowerVR are the future.
