The solution is to have some discipline and exercise. What truly makes (for example) Americans so fat, is culture and a lack of education. There's also a huge detachment to the way people consume food these days. It's expected to be fast, on order by telephone and configured to fit our preferred taste. We are almost oblivious to the fact that some decades ago and even to this day people die of malnutrition and starvation. We eat to satisfy cravings instead of actually feeding the body valuable nutrients. Let's say you order some form of fast-food hamburger. It's hard to realize the fact that some animal was bred and killed for the purpose of that burger in your hand. The bread, the cheese and other ingredients were all obtained through hard work by agricultural means. This is a result of our ancestors innovation and the cooperation of numerous people. All we see is that it's really just a burger. We'll toss it in the dumpster if it displeases us without second thought as well. I'm not trying to sound like some vegan hippie, but I think it's important to sometimes sit back and think about our relationship to shit like food, to have some respect.

At the end of the day, weight gain/loss does come down to calories in/out. However, people are usually more concerned with body composition, which is entirely dependent on macro ratios, insulin response, and exercise, with calories in/out being relatively unimportant.

I've done it, lost 30 lbs in 13 days.

Of course what I did was drink a gallon of unsweetened tea and water each day and have 3 bowls of chicken soup in a 2 week period.

Ended up in the hospital, but that was because my appendix burst, not because of my crash diet.

Outstanding post. This is exactly what I'm figuring out as a fat fuck of an American. I'm on a water fast now going on day 2. I've learned just how much I really need to eat and it isn't a lot. All the times I used to get "hungry" and crave food, it was just addiction to the tastes. You're an idiot. CICO is a colloquial term and already implies that the body is not a perfect system. It's a guideline that works very well. Two isocaloric diets of 2000kcal will cause roughly the same change in weight loss/gain assuming macro nutrient ratios are within normal ranges. Some people will go full retard with this and think that counting calories is impossible and doesn't work.


The best and most important thing when counting calories is that you can be consistently "wrong" but still successful in manipulating your progress. You might assume you have a TDEE of 2000 when it's in fact 1900. You might assume that the workout you always do burns 400 calories instead of 200. It doesn't matter because you always adjust according to the wight scale. Hell, you could probably make up and track your own made up units instead of calories and still find success as long as you are consistent.

Body composition is important to people here. Eat 2000cal of shit food and 2000cal of good food will make a big difference, and denying that will make you look worse in the long run.

And the argument about laws of thermodynamics implies its universal applicability, and is ALWAYS used in these sorts of discussion. It is extremely simplistic in nature, to the point where it can become detrimental to your progress. If you take CICO at face value which many here do, then you should have no objection whatsoever to 2000cal sugar diets. None.
But admitting that people eating 2000cal of pure sure is kind of stupid then already negates CICO's universality. And this starts with macro and then micronutriets. What is it now? CICO or CICO + macro? Or should should this be clarified further?

I want to highlight my experience though, as I think it might be relevant.

My TDEE is 2063 a day and I was tracking all my food on MFP and sticking to 1200-1400. I did this alongside exercising 5 times a week for an hour, including cardio and weights.

It was only once I reached the three month stage (almost exactly) that I saw any change in the scale. I was doing every right, hitting the gym and eating well but my body just wasn't reacting. I should add I was losing inches, but no actual weight.

In the last few weeks I decided to drop carbs from my diet. I still stuck to the same calories but cut out pasta, potatoes, certain vegetables and super fruit sweet. It was only when I did this that I dropped weight (and it continues to drop 4 weeks later).

I think because I was overweight for so long, my body became used to using carbs I was taking in. It could also be that I was retaining weight like a fucker but I figured that would sort itself out after a month or so of working out.

So I think some people are sensitive to certain things and avoiding these might result in a higher chance of weight loss.

Just my two cents. Probably totally wrong.
