Is he the best athlete in the world today?
Messi is probably the most skilled. He's head and shoulders above anyone else in his field when it comes to skill. But in terms of pure athleticism? Like, if you pit two guys in head-to-head neutral athletic contests (neutral as in neither of their sports, something else). Djokovic would probably wreck Messi in a variety of things - triathlon/other long distance shit, weightlifting, MMA. Even sprinting?
Who could beat Djokovic in a variety of head-to head athletic contests?
Granted guys like djokovich are fit as fuck, but tennis is a relatively easy sport.
Rugby players are probably the all round most fit. God tier cardio, fast and strong.
Any mediocre professional long distance runner who has been lifting twice a week for 2 years would wreck him in head-to-head neutral athletic contests
Also probably a lot of NBA, soccer, rugby, and american football players, too
Usane Bolt is faster
Phelps can swim better
Cam Newton is bigger
Manning is old and can still throw a ball better
Beckham is better at kicking things
Pacquiao could rek him in a fight
So could Mayweather, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, etc.
he can play tennis pretty well. that's a shitty sport anyways
Lol these weak fuck dyels the best athlete?
Best athlete is pic related hands fucking down no contest, not even close.
>Americucks thinking NFL is real sport and real "athletes"
>in a variety of sports
maybe Ronaldo could lift more, sprint 100m faster and possibly win in MMA, but could he really beat Djokovic in an endurance contest? At most he plays 120mins (2 or 3 times a year), where he mixes explosive movement with lazy moments. Djokovic routinely plays 3/4/5 hour matches, every 2 days in tournaments, here he mixes explosive movement with lazy moments.
Same with Rugby players.
Decathlon athletes would be the opposite.
Y'all niggaz are missing the point. Show me someone who could beat Djokovic in a majority of various neutral athletic contests.
It's advantageous for their specific position
pic related for why you're retarded
In terms of pure endurance, pro cyclists take the cake. They cycle at basically sprint speeds for normies for hours at a time for weeks at a time. Pro cyclists also have had the highest VO2 maxes ever recorded. The only bad thing is that they are super DYEL
There's no such thing as a neutral athletic contest
or to put it more simply, is there anyone who could beat Djokovic in endurance contests AND power contests? I honestly can;t think of anyone, that's why I'm suggesting he's the best pure athlete in the world right now.
Probably lebron, he could of went to the NFL Or maybe deion sanders, he played in both thr NFL and MLB
Any answer other then Bo Jackson is false and should be disregarded
>eurofags mad cuz their best athletes are all dyel manlets
pic related: an actual athlete
Even without the weight, our endurance tends to suck. Its the price you pay for being that size and competing in a sport that gives absolutely no fucks about performance over a longer timer period.
Most of us couldn't run a 400 let alone do any real endurance work.
as much as i dislike the guy, he is an unbelievealbe athlete, he could probably succeed in any sport he wanted to.
i imagine he will be banging 20+ a season well in his mid 30s
Rg3 qualified for the Olympics in the 400m hurdle.
Also I'm surprised no me posted this guy yet. Hate on crossfit all you want as a way of building strength, but there's no denying the athletic skill of their top athletes.
>best athlete in the world today
>not Ashton Eaton
pick one, nerds
They're atrocious at a lot of things. Its the nature of the pseudo-generalist - you've got a lot of things to be good at, so stuff outside that range tends to get ignored as much as possible because you just can't spread yourself that thinly.
>claims to compete
>still shits on his own sport and the champions of that sport
Tell me your name so I can fucking shit on you when you compete faggot
You're vastly underrating rugby union players. Have you ever played rugby or even watched the world cup? Trust me those guys do not lack in endurance, and have superior speed, strength and would be as coordinated if not more than the joker
>endurance of a professional cyclist
>strong as fuck
>supreme mental acuity/co-ordination/balance etc
inb4 clueless fgts who don't know shit about motocross racing
This fucking guy is a beast.
>faster 40 then some of the best RBs in the league
>higher vertical then some of the best WRs in the league
>Taller or as tall as the best TE/DE in the league
>stronger and bigger then the best LBs in the league
>carrys his team
This guy right here is a monster and a pure athlete, he doesn't get enough credit
Tennis is pretty cool, but doesn't require outstanding fitness in terms of strength or power. Just really good Neural connections and prediction abilities to hit the ball where you want it.
If i was going to pick and athlete I'd have to probably pick one of Australia iron men. Motherfuckers run into big surf and swim a couple of kilometers then back in to do some running, then back out on a kayak/paddle again. Fuck doing that, very robust lads
No, the best athletes in the world are wrestlers. Just look at how buff this gem is...
Cycling is honestly the most alpha sport. It's literally just a test of who can be in the most physical pain for the longest period of time. I don't necessarily mean that about the racing, but the training itself is fucking awful the amount of time they have to ride. So alpha.
>NBA Players are the fittest in the world
I guess no-one else in this thread wants to take real research into account.
>The National Athletic Health Institute in Inglewood, California tested several professional motocross racers in September 1979 as part of a comparative study of the cardio-vascular, muscle endurance, and flexibility fitness of athletes from various disciplines. Athletes from track, American football, pro basketball and soccer were tested, among others. As a group, the motocross riders tested to a higher overall fitness level than any group tested. Motocross racers get their heart rate up to around 180 to 190 beats per minute and hold it there for about 35 minutes. These riders do this twice per day. A subsequent study by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Sports Performance Complex in 2002 reconfirmed the result with more recent motocross racers. The intense physical demand of motocross derives from the fact that the racer of the bike must keep complete control of a 200 lb (91 kg) or heavier bike, while also maintaining their top speed throughout the race
these dudes don't know bo
i dont know mane, but i would love to see that fight
daily reminder that a tennis player is bigger than majority of /fit/
not sure, and I have absolutely no evidence to back it, but I believe pro boxers are peak of athletic ability. There is that study that says boxing is the hardest sport, but I am not sure if that's what you are asking OP. I train amateur and it's incredibly challenging, but a guy in my gym is a pro and it's some next level shit, his training and conditioning but he's just a beginner in some shit German league or something.
This is the ultimate athlete. He was the #1 player of 2015
Murray has been playing well lately but to me he'll always be a little bitch, he's very British in the worst way. I hope Djokovic makes him look like the child he is, just like last time (just need to get the errors under control, he can't play like he did against Simon against Murray and win)
Djokovic is a great endurance athlete. No question about it. Tennis is a touch sport which basically consists of HIIT for the entire match. No jogging, no taking it easy.
But that doesn't mean he would be good for much else.
In terms of pure athleticism. You could put him against a veriety of top rugby players and he wouldn't be able to keep up.
He trains to be the best at sprinting lots of short distances and swinging his arm.
Where does the Ronaldo is a superior athlete meme come from?!
The guy has a good body yeah but in terms of running stats during matches he is absolutely BLASTED away from the true hard working players on the pitch.
Theres players who run far more than him every game, even on his own team players have had to run more than they should to make up from his own lack of hard work on the pitch. Same goes for Messi. They're incredible footballers but in terms of overall athletes in football I'd give it to any box to box centre midfielder in the top flight over Messi or Ronaldo.
It's the easiest racket sport there is. Squash and badminton are both more physically demanding by far. Tennis is a slow sport with relatively huge and regular breaks. The guys at the top level ARE fit as fuck though, no doubt about that, but overall it's an easy sport.
In no particular order the hardest sports are probably
Rugby league (Union too but not as much)
Boxing/MMA/combat sports in general
American football players are fucking beasts but generally lack the cardio of rugby players.
He's deployed as a winger and Messi as CAM.
Both have a poor work rate even for their positions. Lots of high intensity sprints yes but same goes for EVERY player on the pitch.
Their work rate (distance covered defending for the team) is poor which puts them at a disadvantage in terms of being pure ATHLETES , not top class FOOTBALLERS.
Also goals scored is a meme which people use to place these attacking players in a higher regard. Ronaldo can't pass or tackle like other players can but scores 30-50 tap ins a season out of the quality work from his other players, how does that make him stand out as an objectively better player?
>you could say the same thing if a rugby player played tennis.
No you couldn't. I didn't mention anything about djokovic playing rugby... I'm not talking about sports.
I thought the thread was about athleticism with skill taken out of the picture. If you were to test top speed, acceleration, strength and endurance and add up a combined score, then djokovic would come up short due to how important one aspect of his physical ability is compared to others.
It's not easy. It's just easier than many, many other sports. Same with football/soccer. They are superb athletes, but these sports just aren't as physically demanding as many others.
>thinks tennis is easier than squash and badminton
Are you serious? Are you fucking serious?. Do you not know how small badminton courts are. They are fucking tiny. That's why the games look faster.
Jesus christ. Badminton players all look like manlet twigs.
you're thinking about this the wrong way OP. he honed his body for tennis and nothing but. sure he's fit but if he enters the domain of any other athlete he'll be great - exceptional even - but no where close to the best.
Also, the only reason he wins against Federer is because Federer got old. The ONLY reason.
Badminton is fast paced as fuck if played well. But I've only seen it and don't know enough to say for sure I guess. Squash is one of the hardest sports for sure, think constant sprint intervals with tiny breaks over a long period of time. It's much harder than tennis where the ball bounces a million miles in the air and you play up to four then have a break and the serve takes a million years. Tennis is hard though because of how long it goes on for, but it's just not as intense as other sports. The top level guys are obviously in peak physical condition though.
You missed a large portion of the post. He's not going into another athletes home sport and competing for the win. Him and other athletes would be put in a sport that neither of them usually play.
To put it simply, op is asking for the most versatile athlete.
