Learn grappling and striking techniques. Chin low and hands in front. Be aware of foot placement. You know, common things. Which you probably know seeing as youre wanting to get into it.
You don't just 'start mma'. Find a school of martial arts that you're interested in, and start there. Work your way up the belts before you even consider competing against someone.

Ok so just to be clear, I'm talking about signing up for lessons at a gym, not starting to compete. AN instructor from my MMA gym will be getting in touch with me probably tomorrow.
I was just asking for tips you'd give to a n00b who's about to start lessons or sparring or whatever the term is.

i've been doing muey thai for over a year and a half. If you are doing it just for fun i woudln't do anything that isn't regulated and just a general fast course into mma. So do like jiu jitsu/judo/mueythai

Be about that life if you want to be good. Train every day. If you've never done martial arts before than I suggest researching stuff on your own as well. Some techniques take time to develop, especially kicking.

Do do HIIT. You probably won't be sparring for a while if you've never done any previous training. If they chuck you in against an amateur in your first few weeks then instantly bail as they're just feeding meat to their fighters

listen to your instructor, not 4chan

One thing I wouldn't want in life is one dude in my guard bleeding all over me like he's trying to water board me with his blood.

Learn basic grappling first. Positions and Submissions from every Position at least 1. Also did you ever do any martial arts?
If you currently lift, try ad in some HIIT style or tabata circuits, will help in general with movement and fitness. Also stretching is a must.

for grappling keep both arms in or out, never 1 in and 1 out
also breathe (people forget this)
