Resistance is resistance. They can be a great alternative to the pullup if you're too fat to do them or too weak. If you can do pullups though, you should be doing them first, pulldowns second.
I have a related question.
I can do chinup's fine - no problem there, but, I do struggle with wide grip pull-ups. I can do one, maybe two at a pinch - back just isn't there yet.
Is it better to continue trying to do these, maybe doing negatives to fill out 5-6 reps in a set? Or, am I better off doing lat pulldowns for the meantime to get the full range of concentric and eccentric muscle contraction, and move on to wide pull-ups when I can do them properly?
No. From what I've seen in the gym, most of you have no business attempting a pull up or its sissy boi pussy brother aka chin up. If you aren't trying to give the bar a mid air blow job trying to hit that last inch in your range, or struggling to keep your bottom heavy asses stable without looking like you're dry humping the air..I see many other abominations.
Learn how to actually use your lats and keep your lower half and neck stable. Negatives may help. But being able to lat pulldown with at least your body weight is more effective. I'm not talking about using your lumbar in some odd hyperextension/lat pulldown hybrid. I'm talking about pure elbow addiction.
