This was me a month ago, I've been making steady gains
5000 calories will not be optimal as he'll definitely gain a lot of fat, and as a result will have to waste a lot of time cutting and making lmaonogains.
Aim for a weight gain of around a kilo a month, you only need a surplus of around 250-300 calories. Be patient, increase the calories over time (on a weekly or every other week basis) until you see an increase. I'd start around 3000 and go up from there if that isn't enough, go down if you're gaining too fast.
