Been lurking here for a while and never seen a punk thread. For those of you who like looking good but don't want to look like someone out of a yachting catalog or /r/malefashionadvice, post inspo or suggestions here.
If you used this kind of shit irl wouldn't it literally disintegrate as you walk?
W2c some cheap good looking military parkas or denim jackets to patch up? Sorta like pic related idk.
Also, what are some /fa/ punk bands? (besides th eobvious ones like Iceage, Jesus & Mary Chain, etc.)
fuck yeah brother. What new bands have you been listening to?
watch out bad ass punk men itt
you wouldn't mess with this crazy punk fucker
the fuck is that facial expression
the fact that you're asking what "punk" looks like and for inspo suggests you're a bandwagon jumping motherfucker.
it's about the true spirit of not giving a fuck and destroying yourself.
pic related, do you think these guys gave an honest toss wether they looked punk? they didn't give a fuck and wore and did what they wanted to. that's punk, not some fucking poser arse "muh studded jacket and crust jeans" attitude
>If you used this kind of shit irl wouldn't it literally disintegrate as you walk?
not necessarily. but after a long time and loads of gigs, its definitly will, and just fix it again and again.
though it wont allways work..
>lead singer has meticulously painted his face and wears a suit
He certainly doesn't care about his looks! Good point, anon. You're very punk and cool.
pic related, it's a punk motherfucker
>being assravaged about something he has no control over
some more punk Danes for your consideration
long haired elias is best elias
you missed my point brah, he didn't care what looked "punk" but dressed how he wanted to
>the motherfucker was a gravedigger
>was picked up by the rest of the band singing at a funeral
You know the problem I've always found with punk steez is your essentially just throwing on your dads wardrobe if he was an edgy guy in the 80's. It's dadcore now, how do you keep it fresh?
Hardcore style is sort of the closest thing we have to a true punk ethos in clothes; black tee, black vans, black dickies. It's unassuming style brings the ethos out of the clothes. I'd like to see punk go full circle- stick it to the man by dressing better than him. Dudes with mohawkes in 3 piece suits, ties patterned like nooses, covered in tatts- doc martens spit polished under pants cut full and wide; how badass and confusing would that be?
Punk is just not giving a fuck. You wear whatever you want. Don't buy into that branding of punk bullshit, that's as anti-punk as it gets. The Damned are fucking punk you moron. Bowie is punk, Skrillex is punk because only a madman would have his hair like that
Punk is Dockers pulled up to your navel, a white button-down shirt, and a nice tie.
That's what the rockabilly faggots think they're doing you dolt.
> Not giving a fuck is punk
That's not all of it though, punk is supposed to be about aggressive progress and expression. Apathy alone is fucking dumb, but to not give a shit about anything but your beliefs / passions is punk as fuck.
>Skrillex is punk
>because of his hair
What? That shit is so common within the EDM scene both before and after him, he's not doing anything that crazy there. He doesn't really stand for shit other than a drug culture that made it's way into the mainstream.
I feel personally responsible for these threads, because i used to post about my crust pants all the time. I've been into punk for years, but i happen to live in an area with a super minimal scene. So I posted on /fa/ because people liked my clothes, i never in my fucking life expected non punks to try to fucking wear punk clothes.
You don't dress goth if you're not goth, you don't dress and other subculture or culture unless you're at least vaguely part of it. I just didn't think
/fa/ was this dumb. im so fucking tired of seeing diy threads flooded with stupid people trying to figure out how to sew so they can make super shitty ugly artificial looking crust pants.
I mean idk i don't think i'd caret that much, and i know punk doesn't own patched pants, but it's not like these people are making patched pants based off of the other sub cultures or cultures that has them.
tl;dr: im sorry i posted picture of my pants and spawned this horrible poseur circle jerk
Undercover still came out ages ago with their crust pants, its not like you invented them.
And let people wear whatever they want, its obvious that rest of the fit must compliment these pants.
Lots of people dress "goth" and they're not goth at all, that scene doesn't really exist anymore.
ty, I can't believe you recognized me lmao.
no shit sherlock, but i did kind of a lot of /fa/ to them. I used /fa/ for a while before i posted anything, and crust pants where NOT a topic that was mentioned as often as it is now, if at all. and btw if you think the goth scene, or other subcultures for that matter "don't exist anymore", you're just not looking very hard. And im so sorry i dont want people bastardising something i care about.
i started a pair myself a while ago. had some black pants with some band patches on them for a long time, but recently turned them into crust pants.
no Antisect though. but got them on my jacket.
>my version of punk is the only punk
>look how punk i am policing other people's feelings on punk
this is probably the worste thread about punk clothes i've seen on /fa/ though. I do agree that you should listen to punk music and follow some sort of punk ideals if you want to consider yourself punk. doesn't really matter what you believe as long as you have strong convictions and are interested in the subculture. Oh and i mean punk is traditionally extremely leftist and antiauthoritarian, but that's really all you gotta be on board with.
Plus ignoring punk fashion is silly. i see no reason that punk should exclude expressing punk through fashion. Since it's okay to express punk through other art forms; visual art, sculpture, music etc. On top of that ignoring punk fashion is ignoring a big part of the development and heritage of punk. What's wrong with expressing your ideals through dress?
Punk fucking blows anyway who cares
Especially 80s punk when the retards had no idea how to play their instruments or sing or compose a song and a pseudo intellectual message
It's like listening to Napoleon Dynamites artwork
You've never actually listened to any 80's Punk, have you? Eastbay Rays DK guitar work blows anything modern punk bands play out of the water. You're a fucking child and a basic pleb bitch if you genuinely believe any of the classic Punk bands couldn't play their instruments.
That's the kind of rock I like. Skip to 3:50. The dead kennedys are physically incapable of playing this. Especially their drummer. If you think that guys guitar playing is even remotely impressive you're a fucking amateur. Look up Steve Vai and be better than the gap.
You aren't even articulate enough to defend yourself further. I like music that is soulful and played by musicians who are competent. You can't even describe why you like what you do well enough to defend it because you aren't smart enough to.
Been on a classic country kick lately. Waylon Sings Ol Harlan is my jam. :^)
Prove it, let's hear your argument. Saying I'm dumb without describing why is like talking shit without posting fit. The dumbest people do what you just did. If I criticize someone I can actually covey my line of reasoning. You're like the guy who just says shit fit instead of telling the poster what doesn't fit, what is wrong with the color palette, what is superfluous, etc.
In other words you're even more stupid than he is. At least he attempted to give an example despite it being a terrible one.
punk checking in
I've been part of a scene for about 4 years now, I'm 21, and when I started out I was decked fully in rolled up skinny jeans on combat books, ripped shirts, studded jacket, mohawk, etc.
Now I wear pretty much band shirts that age naturally, black/white jeans, motorcycle boots/docs, a plain biker jacket with some pins and a flannel or sweater. usually just go with a shaved head as far as hair.
Punk is a pretty extensive scene, alot of people who consider themselves punk have no idea about any of the modern DIY scene beyond Ceremony or some shit. Not to mention the separation between the subgenre cliques.
Anyways, if any of you are interested, heres some bands that are big right now, some of whom are pretty damn /fa/ actually:
hank wood and the hammerheads
dawn of humans
if anyone is interested, I can post more pics that show a more modern version of punk style
pic related, is crazy spirit
FUCK the garden. they are the direct antithesis of punk. fuck hedi slimane for picking them up and having them walk in one of his shows. the garden is burger records' new way of introducing suburban tumblr children to pop by labeling it "punk"
Hank Wood and the Hammerheads
http://youtu.be/YvsdPPbLqAMHigh-energy street garage rock, easily one of the most popular contemporary bands. NYC
On my phone for awhile so I'll keep up as best as possible.
If thread does I'll start a new one
Anyways, CRAZY SPIRIT and HANK WOOD
Heroin addicts make simple/brilliant punk. Broken up, and definitely on the weirder side of punk aesthetic, they're controversial for maintaining an aesthetic and generally for behaving like aggressive drug addicts. Chicago, one of my all time faves
Dawn of Humans
Including members of Hank Wood and Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans is notorious for the nude, bizarre stage presence of its frontman. One of the best NYC bands of all time, they hve a totally unique, primal sound.
Will post some vids later either in this or new thread, but if you have a chance check out dawn of humans live on YouTube, it's something else
These guys are at the top of the noise punk game. The singer wields power tools at live shows. Pretty harsh shit.
Also, if you live in or near a major city chances are there's house shows or a punk bar, especially if you live on the east coast.
Do you have anything a bit less 'incoherent'? I dont mind a discordant sound and Im really digging >>9394313 and to a lesser degree >>9394306 but anything more along the lines of >>9394292?
I get the aesthetic but Im not really feeling that turned onto really noisy punk when Anal Cunt was 30 years ago.
Check out Wrong Decision from Belgium
and Imaginary Dictionary
I can imagine you liking those two bands even though they're lesser known in the states than all of those new Boston and NYC bands.
Im not big into the punk scene itself and I'd be more likely to listen to something like BR (i.e. soaring, melodic and 'poppy' vocals and riffs) but Ive been partying for a few days with some friends who make music and both us and the music has been pretty fuzzed out so Ive been binging on Violent Apathy and stuff.
Well, the style of punk you're describing is certainly reaching a peak these days. But please consider that this type of 80's revival revival is pretty new. 2 or 3 years ago, nobody was doing this freak punk hing and all the hardcore kids were decked out in supreme, northface and youth crew shirts.
If you want to stay ahead of the game I suggest morphing to a more post-punk oriented look. Think Ian Curtis, Jesus and Mary Chain, you know. Because this freak punk thing is already on it's way out. All the new bands are emulating it, everybody is trying to outdo eachother in terms of "weirdness" and it's starting to feel fake.
Punk/hardcore moves in cycles. Clean cut postpunk is coming back. After which it'll probably resort back to cookiecutter youthcrew.
I agree to an extent. I don't dress very "weird" myself, but for sure the bands I've listed are what you're describing and they're my favorites. As far as the clean-cut, plenty of punk bands dress in extremely nice, clean cut clothes, notably the Danish bands like iceage.
The current trend espouses weirdness to an extent, but most of those bands are nowhere near as good as the ones like CS or DoH in terms of originality in their sound.
Pic related, cülo mostly sings about being addicted to drugs or a shitty life, but they're considered "weird" cause the singer wore a beret and 80s sunglasses
Where I'm from they get a lot of shit for their "image" and are generally considered to be the inspiration for more straight up weird bands.
The scene in my city hates them though, when they played here a few years ago it was a disaster, so to be fair even though I like them I'm sure my perception of their reputation is skewed
The Flex, Obstruct or Shrapnel are superior to DiE, imo. I honestly don't get what everybody sees in that band.
> CS or DoH in terms of originality in their sound.
I agree, CS and DoH are by far the most original when it comes to sound. CS was one of the first bands I ever saw in that style of punk. Must be somewhere in 2012 during some eurotour. Everybody round here was still on the youthcrew and/or already on the OSDeathMetalripoff vibe so nobody got what the fuck this band of punxweirdos was about.
Problem is that the pendulum tends to swing to fast and the wide in the punkscene. Somebody does something new, give it three years and it's overdone.
for example: Nails started ripping of entombed, two years later we're up to our neck in swedeath bands.
for exampls: Boston Strangler's s/t came out, everybody went nuts on the internet. Two years later we're up to our neck in Xclaim!revival bands. (even though the peak hasn't been hit yet like it has with that swedeath worship).
>Pic related, cülo mostly sings about being addicted to drugs or a shitty life, but they're considered "weird" cause the singer wore a beret and 80s sunglasses
Exactly what I mean. When you dissect Cülo it's basically Ramones-riffs with added weirdness. It's mostly in their look and behavior. And people tend to copy look and behavior because punk/hardcore is full of angsty white kids looking for an identity.
I like die a little better than the flex but not by much.
Exactly. When government warning started the revival shit in 05 or whenever the look was pretty basic and it matched the music. This inspired a shit load of other bands, some of which in turn played with the look and format and now here we are debating what's "weird", who's doing it and who does it best.
Example: DoH singer performs nude. Cue marshstepper, who imo(as far as I know) who pretty much rip off that look down to the greasepaint.
Dude who said that stuff about punk going in cycles has it pretty dead on.
Well, when I said clean postpunk stylings are coming back. I may be wrong, we might sidestep into Oi!-inspired clean cut skinheadwear.
>Via 86 Mentality's regained popularity and via bands like Hired Goons.
Everybody wants to be a dirty drugaddled fuckup, people will start to look clean in response. Like I said, everybody's looking for an identity and will hop on whatever the bandwagon is.
Meanwhile, Scott Vogel will never die.
>generic as fuck shitty pop punk.
>15 year old guitarist level riffs.
>he actually believes a trained funk and jazz drummer couldn't figure out generic mall core tier nonsense
>inexplicably mentions Steve Vai as if somehow it's in any way relevant to a discussion about 80's Punk.
Leap to your death from the tallest building you can find after you tidy up your room so your mommy doesn't have to suffer the indignity of cleaning up your cumrags and piss jugs.
I know who you are, but people have been fiending over mamma dod's crusty jeans for at least two years before you ever posted your jeans and Undercover's scab collection has had a fanbase on any fashion forum since it came out, /fa/ included.
I haven't browsed /fa/ in awhile but from what I've seen I'm pretty surprised there aren't whole threads dedicated to these dudes. Although tbh to pull this look off you need to be in shape or at least appear to be, be handsome and constantly appear to be vaguely annoyed.
I personally love this band, seen them twice and both shows were amazing. They're really nice too. They have a mixed reputation because of their tendency to blur genres, and their latest release is one of (imo) the best of the past year. Of course, loads of punks think they're boring hipsters who are an entry level hack band, so take that for you will.
The dude who asked for more coherent stuff, check out "plowing into the field of love", it's their album I mentioned.
Florida band made up of hardcore veterans, these guys started off playing fugazi/mission of Burma type stuff, moved into more experimental territory, and currently play a very 80's sound. Similar to iceage, they catch shit for not being dirty and for playing essentially pop music.
Also, if anyone is wondering, music/fashion wise, most everything posted here:
Is out of step, dated, entry-level pleb shit. If you're interested in anything from actually participating in a diy scene to just wearing more black leather, use this as a "things to be avoided" guide.
>inb4 "m-muh my pop-punk/80's hardcore/90s "punk"
Bumping with another Danish punks pic
The members played in Cult Ritual, Church Whip, Neon Blud, Dads, along with various other social projects.
They're def older than 19. but for instance I started at 17 and that's considered a year or two later than most. Most punks, including these guys, start going to shows and forming bands in their mid teens, some even before they start high school, and so you can be 24 And have spent ten years of your life dedicated to playing music in however many bands.
Btw sorry for the rambling I had to be up for work at 4 and I took a bunch of speed
Let me clarify
I love the ramones, sex pistols, black flag, bad brains, discharge, etc. But mindlessly treating that music like its the only punk that exists is shutting so many doors on opportunities a contemporary scene can provide.
So like, yeah, I like those bands a lot, but attending their half-assed reunion shows and making LOLRANDOM parodies of the black flag logo is obnoxious and a pretty good indicator that someone's too busy reliving glory days they never experienced
It's like the concept of self-awareness and punk are mutually exclusive
Pic is Nuke Cult, Kansas City. RIP
also, btw, if anyone would like some links to blogs that have all of this music availible, I'd be happy to post.
The current punk scene's affinity with all white outfits is something I'll never understand as well.
Also, while Dawn Of Humans might be the most obscene band in terms of stagepresence. Lumpy of Lumpy & The Dumpers comes close to being the legitimately weirdest.
is subhumans babbys first patch or something.
thats the one i see the most on battle jackets whether is an old dude whos been in the scene for 30 years or some chick who wants to fit in, there's always a subhumans patch.
>i dont much care for punk because i got into it really late and so it doesn't really mean anything to me
>all my patches are of metal bands
The all white shit surprised me too. I think it started out as a New York thing, I THINK maybe Henry from HWatHH started wearing white pants, then a few other people started, then the full white outfits, now every picture of a goddam show has at least one person who looks to hip to function crossing their arms over their bootleg white discharge shirt.
Tbh tho I own white pants and they look pretty great when they get sort of dirty. Can't do the all white tho.
Pic is crazy spirit, note early ex. of all white
Seriously though I don't think there is anyone else in punk who gives less of a shit than lumpy
Sex Pit is a masterpiece. Gnats In The Pisser is a hit. Recently got that collection LP, my girlfriend is still creeped out by it.
Start checking out Gutter Gods frm Australia as well if you want to get truly weird. That Innersense LP still weirds me out.
I can see it adds to the "dirtyness" of punk but to me it'll always look like halfassed Clockwork Orange cosplay. If you want to be a dirty punk, wear a pair of black jeans untill they're white. The white thing is like the beret thing, or the leather glove on one hand thing, or the goofy sunglasses thing, or the trenchcoat thing.
I'm completely obsessed with the label he runs, spotted race. If you want to buy a shirt, you give him your top three of colors and a prefered size. He then goes to the thrift store, finds a matching shirt, screenprints it and mails it to you. For 8$.
It's the greatest thing I ever heard.
>single leather glove
"The 2014-2015 mutant starter pack"
(Still maintain that the Dude in cülo did it first/best tho)
If you can, get your hands on the LP version of Innersense. It comes in a mirrorlike reflective/metallic cover and includes a zine. The zine is called "welcome to the fantasy zone" or something and contains ramblings and art by meatdog topped off with cut 'n past pictures of disney princesses. It's the epithome of weird.
I like gag, "this punk shit is cool..." and skimask 95 are dope, but they take 2edgy4punk to another level
They're like destruction unit in that every pic I see of them playing a show seems staged to be as cool/arty/badass as possible
Gag is just stylistically on top of their game. Everything checks out and I think a lot of bands are secretly ripping them off. That intro/squeeze video is truly mindblowing. It made me want to run to the nearest thrift store and buy and oversized trench coat.
Then I regained my senses.
I met Chi when I went to NYC for the 9/11 hammerheads show, dude is the nicest, coolest dude. Also puts on one hell of a show.
Also, are you into:
I personally find a lot of punk shirts to be aesthetically pleasing
>usually simple, single color screen print
>looks interesting without having to resort to a picture of Satan or whatever else is on metal shirts for shock value
>designed by underground/independent artists
Plus they're usually cheap
Nick Blinko of Rudimentary Peni
Might as well post some of our local bands. I'm in North-east scotland and basically no one ever tours here so we had to build up our own scene and we now have a really cool DIY community thing going on. Not even limited to punk, cross-genres and everyone goes to everyone else's shows and supports each other.
Couple bands I really like
We-ell now! I'm sure those dandy pantaloons do the job, but you must be cold with all of those tears and rips! Wouldn't want to scare away the pretty girls with such unsightly form, now would we! Please allow me to help you with nice-looking, suitable fashion choices!
Look at these refined gentlemen! They have well paying jobs, and committed relationships in progress! Their clothes keep them warm and give off a refined, tailored, and acceptable look!
They came on stage with the ties flicked over their backs, the cheering 0:40 is when they put them down as in the picture. Apparently that is also the only time they played that song.
pretty fashionable statement here.
love these dudes and hunx.
wanted to mention a few other 'pillars' for anyone not so deep into the underground as the couple fellows here
now for very classic stuff of my generation -
BOREDOMS - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
MINUTEMEN - YES PUNK MEANS DO WHAT U WANT.
UNWOUND - NOISY ATTITUDE IS BEAUTIFUL
TEENGENERATE - RISING SON
you know fuck all about punk, then. they're apathetic lazy hipsters riding their fathers' successes, probably on a trust fund. punk is the germs, jodie foster's army, and the hospitals.
